Anharmonicity strongly influences the absorption and emission spectra of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. Here, IR-UV ion-dip spectroscopy experiments together with detailed anharmonic computations reveal the presence of fundamental, overtone, as well as 2- and 3-quanta combination band transitions in the far- and mid-infrared absorption spectrum of phenylacetylene and its singly deuterated isotopologue. Strong absorption features in the 400-900 cm$^{\rm -1}$ range originate from CH(D) in-plane and out-of-plane wags and bends, as well as bending motions including the C$\equiv$C and CH bonds of the acetylene substituent and the aromatic ring. For phenylacetylene, every absorption feature is assigned either directly or indirectly to a single or multiple vibrational mode(s). The measured spectrum is dense, broad, and structureless in many regions but well characterized by computations. Upon deuteration, large isotopic shifts are observed. At frequencies above 1500 cm$^{\rm -1}$ for d$_1$-phenylacetylene, a one-to-one match is seen when comparing computations and experiment with all features assigned to combination bands and overtones. The C$\equiv$C stretch observed in phenylacetylene is not observed in d$_1$-phenylacetylene due to a computed 40-fold drop in intensity. Overall, a careful treatment of anharmonicity that includes 2- and 3-quanta modes is found to be crucial to understand the rich details of the infrared spectrum of phenylacetylene. Aim. We investigate the role of PAHs as a sink for deuterium in the interstellar medium and study UV photolysis as a potential process in the variations of the deuterium fractionation in the ISM. Methods. The UV photo-induced fragmentation of various isotopologues of D-enriched, protonated anthracene and phenanthrene ions was recorded in a FTICR mass spectrometer. IRMPD spectroscopy using FELIX provided the IR spectra that were compared to DFT vibrational spectra; reaction barriers and rates were also calculated and related to the product abundances. Results. The mass spectra for both UV and IRMPD photolysis show the loss of H from [D-C$_{14}$H$_{10}$]$^+$, whereas [H-C$_{14}$D$_{10}$]$^+$ shows a strong preference for D loss. Calculations reveal facile 1,2-H and -D shift reactions, with barriers lower than the energy supplied by the photo-excitation process. Together with confirmation of the ground-state structures via the IR spectra, we determined that the photolytic processes in the 2 PAHs are largely governed by scrambling where the H and the D atoms relocate between different peripheral C atoms. The $\sim$0.1 eV difference in zero-point energy between C-H and C-D bonds ultimately leads to faster H scrambling than D scrambling, and increased H atom loss compared to D. Conclusion. Scrambling is common in PAH cations under UV radiation. Upon photoexcitation of deuterium-enriched PAHs, the scrambling results in a higher probability for the aliphatic D atom to migrate to an aromatic site, protecting it from elimination. This could lead to increased deuteration as a PAH moves towards more exposed interstellar environments. Also, large, compact PAHs with an aliphatic C-HD group on solo sites might be responsible for the majority of aliphatic C-D stretching bands seen in astronomical spectra., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. Aims. In this work we determine the effects of anharmonicity on the mid-infrared spectra of the linear polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene and pentacene recorded using the free electron laser FELIX. Methods. Comparison of experimental spectra obtained under supersonic jet conditions with theoretically predicted spectra was used to show if anharmonicity explicitly needs to be taken into account. Results. Anharmonic spectra obtained using second-order vibrational perturbation theory agree on average within 0.5% of the experimental frequencies. Importantly, they confirm the presence of combination bands with appreciable intensity in the 5-6 $\mu$m region. These combination bands contain a significant fraction of the IR absorption, which scales linearly with the size of the PAH. Detection and assignment of the combination bands are a preliminary indication of the accuracy of far-IR modes in our anharmonic theoretical spectra. Detailed analysis of the periphery-sensitive CH out-of-plane band of naphthalene reveals that there is still room for improvement of the VPT2 approach. Homochirality is a generic and unique property of all biochemical life and the fractional circular polarization of light it induces therefore constitutes a potentially unambiguous biosignature.} However, while high-quality circular polarimetric spectra can be easily and quickly obtained in the laboratory, accurate measurements in the field are much more challenging due to large changes in illumination and target movement. In this study we have measured various targets in the field, up to distances of a few kilometers, using the dedicated circular spectropolarimeter TreePol. We show how photosynthetic life can readily be distinguished from abiotic matter. We underline the potential of circular polarization signals as a remotely accessible means to characterize and monitor terrestrial vegetation, e.g. for agriculture and forestry. Additionally, we discuss the potential of circular polarization for the remote detection of extraterrestrial life.

Photosynthetic eukaryotes show a remarkable variability in photosynthesis, including large differences in light harvesting proteins and pigment composition. In vivo circular spectropolarimetry enables us to probe the molecular architecture of photosynthesis in a non-invasive and non-destructive way and, as such, can offer a wealth of physiological and structural information. In the present study we have measured the circular polarizance of several multicellular green, red and brown algae and higher plants, which show large variations in circular spectropolarimetric signals with differences in both spectral shape and magnitude. Many of the algae display spectral characteristics not previously reported, indicating a larger variation in molecular organization than previously assumed. As the strengths of these signals vary by three orders of magnitude, these results also have important implications in terms of detectability for the use of circular polarization as a signature of life., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

Spectropolarimetry of intact plant leaves allows to probe the molecular architecture of vegetation photosynthesis in a non-invasive and non-destructive way and, as such, can offer a wealth of physiological information. In addition to the molecular signals due to the photosynthetic machinery, the cell structure and its arrangement within a leaf can create and modify polarization signals. Using Mueller matrix polarimetry with rotating retarder modulation, we have visualized spatial variations in polarization in transmission around the chlorophyll a absorbance band from 650 nm to 710 nm. We show linear and circular polarization measurements of maple leaves and cultivated maize leaves and discuss the corresponding Mueller matrices and the Mueller matrix decompositions, which show distinct features in diattenuation, polarizance, retardance and depolarization. Importantly, while normal leaf tissue shows a typical split signal with both a negative and a positive peak in the induced fractional circular polarization and circular dichroism, the signals close to the veins only display a negative band. The results are similar to the negative band as reported earlier for single macrodomains. We discuss the possible role of the chloroplast orientation around the veins as a cause of this phenomenon. Systematic artefacts are ruled out as three independent measurements by different instruments gave similar results. Aims. We aim to elucidate the spectral changes in the 3 micron region that result from chemical changes in the molecular periphery of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with extra hydrogens (H-PAHs) and methyl groups (Me-PAHs). Methods. Advanced laser spectroscopic techniques combined with mass spectrometry were applied on supersonically cooled 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, 9,10-dihydroanthracene, 9,10-dihydrophenathrene, 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydropyrene, 9-methylanthracene, and 9,10-dimethylanthracene, allowing us to record mass-selective and conformationally selective absorption spectra of the aromatic, aliphatic, and alkyl CH-stretches in the 3.175-3.636 micron region with laser-limited resolution. We compared the experimental absorption spectra with standard harmonic calculations and with second-order vibrational perturbation theory anharmonic calculations that use the SPECTRO program for treating resonances. Results. We show that anharmonicity plays an important if not dominant role, affecting not only aromatic, but also aliphatic and alkyl CH-stretch vibrations. The experimental high-resolution data lead to the conclusion that the variation in Me- and H-PAHs composition might well account for the observed variations in the 3 micron emission spectra of carbon-rich and star-forming regions. Circular polarization spectroscopy has proven to be an indispensable tool in photosynthesis research and (bio)-molecular research in general. Oxygenic photosystems typically display an asymmetric Cotton effect around the chlorophyll absorbance maximum with a signal $\leq 1 \%$. In vegetation, these signals are the direct result of the chirality of the supramolecular aggregates. The circular polarization is thus directly influenced by the composition and architecture of the photosynthetic macrodomains, and is thereby linked to photosynthetic functioning. Although ordinarily measured only on a molecular level, we have developed a new spectropolarimetric instrument, TreePol, that allows for both laboratory and in-the-field measurements. Through spectral multiplexing, TreePol is capable of fast measurements with a sensitivity of $\sim 1*10^{-4}$ and is therefore suitable of non-destructively probing the molecular architecture of whole plant leaves. We have measured the chiroptical evolution of \textit{Hedera helix} leaves for a period of 22 days. Spectrally resolved circular polarization measurements (450-900 nm) on whole leaves in transmission exhibit a strong decrease in the polarization signal over time after plucking, which we accredit to the deterioration of chiral macro-aggregates. Chlorophyll \textit{a} levels measured over the same period by means of UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy showed a much smaller decrease. With these results we are able to distinguish healthy from deteriorating leaves. Hereby we indicate the potency of circular polarization spectroscopy on whole and intact leaves as a nondestructive tool for structural and plant stress assessment. In this work we report on high-resolution IR absorption studies that provide a detailed view on how the peripheral structure of irregular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) affects the shape and position of their 3 {\mu}m absorption band. To this purpose we present mass-selected, high-resolution absorption spectra of cold and isolated phenanthrene, pyrene, benz[a]antracene, chrysene, triphenylene, and perylene molecules in the 2950-3150 cm-1 range. The experimental spectra are compared with standard harmonic calculations, and anharmonic calculations using a modified version of the SPECTRO program that incorporates a Fermi resonance treatment utilizing intensity redistribution. We show that the 3 {\mu}m region is dominated by the effects of anharmonicity, resulting in many more bands than would have been expected in a purely harmonic approximation. Importantly, we find that anharmonic spectra as calculated by SPECTRO are in good agreement with the experimental spectra. Together with previously reported high-resolution spectra of linear acenes, the present spectra provide us with an extensive dataset of spectra of PAHs with a varying number of aromatic rings, with geometries that range from open to highly-condensed structures, and featuring CH groups in all possible edge configurations. We report on an experimental and theoretical investigation of the importance of anharmonicity in the 3 micron CH stretching region of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. We present mass-resolved, high-resolution spectra of the gas-phase cold (~4K) linear PAH molecules naphthalene, anthracene, and tetracene. The measured IR spectra show a surprisingly high number of strong vibrational bands. For naphthalene, the observed bands are well separated and limited by the rotational contour, revealing the band symmetries. Comparisons are made to the harmonic and anharmonic approaches of the widely used Gaussian software. We also present calculated spectra of these acenes using the computational program SPECTRO, providing anharmonic predictions enhanced with a Fermi-resonance treatment that utilises intensity redistribution. We demonstrate that the anharmonicity of the investigated acenes is strong, dominated by Fermi resonances between the fundamental and double combination modes, with triple combination bands as possible candidates to resolve remaining discrepancies. The anharmonic spectra as calculated with SPECTRO lead to predictions of the main modes that fall within 0.5% of the experimental frequencies. A nonlinear generalization of convergence sets of formal power series, in the sense of Abhyankar-Moh, is introduced. Given a family y=\phi_{s}(t,x)=sb_{1}(x)t+b_{2}(x)t^{2}+... of analytic curves in C\timesC^{n} passing through the origin, Conv_{\phi}(f) of a formal power series f(y,t,x)\inC[[y,t,x]] is defined to be the set of all s\inC for which the power series f(\phi_{s}(t,x),t,x) converges as a series in (t,x). We prove that for a subset E\subsetC there exists a divergent formal power series f(y,t,x)\inC[[y,t,x]] such that E=Conv_{\phi}(f) if and only if E is a F_{{\sigma}} set of zero capacity. For a domain $D\subset {\Bbb{C}}^n$ we construct a continuous foliation of $D$ into one real dimensional curves such that any function $f\in {C^1(D)}$ which can be extended holomorphically into some neighborhood of each curve in the foliation will be holomorphic on $D$.

Let $\Gamma $ be a $C^\infty $ curve in $\Bbb{C}$ containing 0; it becomes $\Gamma_\theta $ after rotation by angle $\theta $ about 0. Suppose a $C^\infty $ function $f$ can be extended holomorphically to a neighborhood of each element of the family $\{\Gamma_\theta \}$. We prove that under some conditions on $\Gamma $ the function $f$ is necessarily holomorphic in a neighborhood of the origin. In case $\Gamma $ is a straight segment the well known Bochnak-Siciak Theorem gives such a proof for \textit{real analyticity}. We study the convergence of a formal power series of two variables if its restrictions on curves belonging to a certain family are convergent. Also analyticity of a given $C^\infty $ function $f$ is proved when the restriction of $f$ on analytic curves belonging to some family is analytic. Our results generalize two known statements: a theorem of P. Lelong and the Bochnak-Siciak Theorem. The effect of quantum confinement on the direct bandgap of spherical Si nanocrystals has been modelled theoretically. We conclude that the energy of the direct bandgap at the $\Gamma$-point decreases with size reduction: quantum confinement enhances radiative recombination across the direct bandgap and introduces its "red" shift for smaller grains. We postulate to identify the frequently reported efficient blue emission (F-band) from Si nanocrystals with this zero-phonon recombination. In a dedicated experiment, we confirm the "red" shift of the F-band, supporting the proposed identification.

We study discrete fixed point sets of holomorphic self-maps of complex manifolds. The main attention is focused on the cardinality of this set and its configuration. We study fixed point sets for holomorphic automorphisms (and endomorphisms) on complex manifolds. The main object of our interest is to determine the number and configuration of fixed points that forces an automorphism (endomorphism) to be the identity. These questions have been examined in a number of papers for a bounded domain in ${\Bbb C}^n$. Here we resolve the case for a general finite dimensional hyperbolic manifold. We also show that the results for non-hyperbolic manifolds are notably different., Comment: 10 pages

We study the fixed point sets of holomorphic self-maps of a bounded domain in ${\Bbb C}^n$. Specifically we investigate the least number of fixed points in general position in the domain that forces any automorphism (or endomorphism) to be the identity. We have discovered that in terms of this number one can give the necessary and sufficient condition for the domain to be biholomorphic to the unit ball. Other theorems and examples generalize and complete previous results in this area, especially the recent work of Jean-Pierre Vigu\'{e}., Comment: 10 pages
