From October 2021, the government introduced a pilot in 30 local authorities to support 16 to 18-year-old children looked-after (CLA) and care leavers (CLs) in general further education (FE) colleges through the extension of Pupil Premium Plus funding to post-16 (PP+ Post-16). The 6-month pilot was completed between autumn 2021 and spring 20221 , before funding was extended to a further 28 local authorities in autumn 2022 and subsequently extended to all local authorities in England in autumn 2023. The purpose of PP+ Post-16 was also extended in 2023/24 to provide funding to support all CLA and CLs at post-16, rather than focusing on support for CLA and CLs in general FE colleges. This mixed methods evaluation is formative in intention and involves an exploratory study of the use of the funding by virtual schools (VS). It also considers early evidence about progress towards the outcomes in the Theory of Change (ToC), developed during the pilot evaluation and updated at the start of this evaluation through a series of ToC workshops with VSHs. The outcomes are arranged in the ToC under 3 headings, which are outcomes relating to young people, post-16 settings and joint working. This interim report presents findings from year 1 of the evaluation (2023/24) based on a national online survey of VSHs, case study interviews in 6 local authorities involving interviews with a range of stakeholders, and documentary analysis. While increasing patients' access to medical documents improves medical care, this benefit is limited by varying health literacy levels and complex medical terminology. Large language models (LLMs) offer solutions by simplifying medical information. However, evaluating LLMs for safe and patient-friendly text generation is difficult due to the lack of standardized evaluation resources. To fill this gap, we developed MeDiSumQA. MeDiSumQA is a dataset created from MIMIC-IV discharge summaries through an automated pipeline combining LLM-based question-answer generation with manual quality checks. We use this dataset to evaluate various LLMs on patient-oriented question-answering. Our findings reveal that general-purpose LLMs frequently surpass biomedical-adapted models, while automated metrics correlate with human judgment. By releasing MeDiSumQA on PhysioNet, we aim to advance the development of LLMs to enhance patient understanding and ultimately improve care outcomes.

Conic quasi-linear maps are nonlinear operators from $C_0(X)$ to a normed linear space $E$ which preserve nonnegative linear combinations on positive cones generated by single functions; quasi-linear maps are linear on singly generated subalgebras. While nonlinear, a quasi-linear map is bounded iff it is continuous. $E = \mathbb{R}$ gives quasi-integrals, which correspond to (deficient) topological measures - nonsubadditive set functions generalizing measures. Like image measures $\mu \circ u^{-1}$, (d-) image transformations move (deficient) topological measures from one space to another, generalizing $u^{-1}$. We give criteria for a (d-) image transformation to be $u^{-1}$ for some proper continuous function. We study the interrelationships between (conic) quasi-linear maps, quasi-integrals, (deficient) topological measures and (d-) image transformations when $E = C_0(Y), X, Y$ are locally compact. (Conic) quasi-homomorphisms behave like homomorphisms on singly generated subalgebras or cones. We show that (conic) quasi-homomorphisms are in 1-1 correspondence with (d-) image transformations and with certain continuous proper functions. We give criteria for a (conic) quasi-linear map to be a (conic) quasi-homomorphism, and for the latter to be an algebra homomorphism. Any conic quasi-linear map or bounded quasi-linear map is a composition of an algebra homomorphism with the basic quasi-linear map, and we give criteria for the latter to be linear. We study the adjoints of (d-) image transformations and (conic) quasi-linear maps; for (conic) quasi-homomorphisms they give Markov-Feller operators with nonlinear duals.

The difficulty and consequent fear of travel is one of the most disabling consequences of blindness and severe vision impairment, affecting confidence and quality of life. Traditional tactile graphics are vital in the Orientation and Mobility training process, however 3D printing may have the capacity to enable production of more meaningful and inclusive maps. This study explored the use of 3D printed maps on site at a public event to examine their suitability and to identify guidelines for the design of future 3D maps. An iterative design process was used in the production of the 3D maps, with feedback from visitors who are blind or have low vision informing the recommendations for their design and use. For example, it was found that many representational 3D icons could be recognised by touch without the need for a key and that such a map helped form mental models of the event space. Complex maps, however, require time to explore and should be made available before an event or at the entrance in a comfortable position. The Doer Effect states that completing more active learning activities, like practice questions, is more strongly related to positive learning outcomes than passive learning activities, like reading, watching, or listening to course materials. Although broad, most evidence has emerged from practice with tutoring systems in Western, Industrialized, Rich, Educated, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations in North America and Europe. Does the Doer Effect generalize beyond WEIRD populations, where learners may practice in remote locales through different technologies? Through learning analytics, we provide evidence from N = 234 Ugandan students answering multiple-choice questions via phones and listening to lectures via community radio. Our findings support the hypothesis that active learning is more associated with learning outcomes than passive learning. We find this relationship is weaker for learners with higher prior educational attainment. Our findings motivate further study of the Doer Effect in diverse populations. We offer considerations for future research in designing and evaluating contextually relevant active and passive learning opportunities including leveraging familiar technology, increasing the number of practice opportunities, and aligning multiple data sources., Comment: Accepted to Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK 2025)

Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs) are enigmatic, evolved, massive stars. Their variability has been observed to be episodic with large eruptions, along with variations on time-scales of days to decades. We have extracted light curves of 37 LBVs from the first four years of the TESS mission. These light curves provide two years of photometric time-series for stars in the LMC, with several months of data for Galactic or SMC targets. We analyze the Fourier properties of the stellar light curves to determine their characteristic frequencies and red noise amplitudes, comparing them to mass-loss parameters through H$\alpha$ strength, and in the case of the LMC stars, $B-V$ color and luminosity as estimated by their apparent $g$-magnitudes. We confirm the absence of correlation between any of the Fourier parameters and stellar parameters, implying that there is no trend in how these stars vary as measured with these photometric data, which may point towards these stars being an extension to the supergiant $\alpha$ Cygni variables and not a unique class of object with regards to their short-term variations., Comment: accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Stellar activity contamination of radial velocity (RV) data is one of the top challenges plaguing the field of extreme precision RV (EPRV) science. Previous work has shown that photometry can be very effective at removing such signals from RV data, especially stellar activity caused by rotating star spots and plage.The exact utility of photometry for removing RV activity contamination, and the best way to apply it, is not well known. We present a combination photometric and RV study of eight Kepler/K2 FGK stars with known stellar variability. We use NEID RVs acquired simultaneously with TESS photometry, and we perform injection recovery tests to quantify the efficacy of recent TESS photometry versus archival Kepler/K2 photometry for removing stellar variability from RVs. We additionally experiment with different TESS sectors when training our models in order to quantify the real benefit of simultaneously acquired RVs and photometry. We conclude that Kepler photometry typically performs better than TESS at removing noise from RV data when it is available, likely due to longer baseline and precision. In contrast, for targets with available K2 photometry, especially those most active, and with high precision ($\sigma_{NEID}$ $<$ 1 m s$^{-1}$) NEID RVs, TESS may be the more informative dataset. However, contrary to expectations, we have found that training on simultaneous photometry does not always achieve the best results.

Emissive organic radicals are currently of great interest for their potential use in the next generation of highly efficient organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices and as molecular qubits. However, simulating their optoelectronic properties is challenging, largely due to spin-contamination and the multireference character of their excited states. Here we present a data-driven approach where, for the first time, the excited electronic states of organic radicals are learned directly from experimental excited state data, using a much smaller amount of data than required by typical Machine Learning. We adopt ExROPPP, a fast and spin-pure semiempirical method for calculation of excited states of radicals, as a surrogate physical model for which we learn the optimal set of parameters. We train the model on 81 previously published radicals and find that the trained model is a huge improvement over ExROPPP with literature parameters, giving RMS and mean absolute errors of 0.24 and 0.16 eV respectively with R$^2$ and SRCC of 0.86 and 0.88 respectively. We synthesise four new radicals and validate the model on their spectra, finding even lower errors and similar correlation as for the testing set. This model paves the way for high throughput discovery of next-generation radical based optoelectronics.

We report the validation of multiple planets transiting the nearby ($d = 12.8$ pc) K5V dwarf HD 101581 (GJ 435, TOI-6276, TIC 397362481). The system consists of at least two Earth-size planets whose orbits are near a mutual 4:3 mean-motion resonance, HD 101581 b ($R_{p} = 0.956_{-0.061}^{+0.063}~R_{\oplus}$, $P = 4.47$ days) and HD 101581 c ($R_{p} = 0.990_{-0.070}^{+0.070}~R_{\oplus}$, $P = 6.21$ days). Both planets were discovered in Sectors 63 and 64 TESS observations and statistically validated with supporting ground-based follow-up. We also identify a signal that probably originates from a third transiting planet, TOI-6276.03 ($R_{p} = 0.982_{-0.098}^{+0.114}~R_{\oplus}$, $P = 7.87$ days). These planets are remarkably uniform in size and their orbits are evenly spaced, representing a prime example of the "peas-in-a-pod" architecture seen in other compact multi-planet systems. At $V = 7.77$, HD 101581 is the brightest star known to host multiple transiting planets smaller than $1.5~R_{\oplus}$. Parking functions correspond with preferences of $n$ cars which enter sequentially to park on a one-way street where (1) each car parks in the first available spot greater than or equal to its preference and (2) all cars successfully park. When a car parks in its preferred spot then the corresponding car and corresponding spot are deemed ``lucky.'' This paper looks briefly at lucky cars which have previously been studied and in simple cases can be understood by a generalization of a result due to Pollak. We also consider lucky spots where the situation is more complex and not previously studied. Probabilities and asymptotics for lucky spots are given for the first few spots on the one-way street. We close with an exploration of the special cases when cars enter the one-way street in either weakly-increasing or weakly-decreasing order of their preferences.

We use a sample of 11 $z\approx0.2-0.5$ ($z_{\text{med.}} = 0.36$) galaxy clusters from the Cluster Lensing And Supernovae survey with Hubble (CLASH) to analyse the angular dependence of satellite galaxy colour $(B-R)$ and passive galaxy fraction ($f_{\text{pass.}}$) with respect to the major axis of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). This phenomenon has been dubbed as \say{anisotropic quenching}, \say{angular conformity} or \say{angular segregation}, and it describes how satellite galaxies along the major axis of the BCG are more likely to be quenched than those along the minor axis. A highly significant anisotropic quenching signal is found for satellites, with a peak in $(B-R)$ and $f_{\text{pass.}}$ along the major axis. We are the first to measure anisotropic quenching out to cluster-centric radii of $3R_{200}$ ($R_{200\text{, med.}} \approx 933$ \si{\kilo\parsec}). We find that the signal is significant out to at least $2.5R_{200}$, and the amplitude of the signal peaks at $\approx1.25R_{200}$. This is the first time a radial peak of the anisotropic quenching signal has been measured directly. We suggest that this peak could be caused by a build-up of backsplash galaxies at this radius. Finally, we find that $f_{\text{pass.}}$ is significantly higher along the major axis for fixed values of local surface density. The density drops less rapidly along the major axis and so satellites spend more time being pre-processed here compared to the minor axis. We therefore conclude that pre-processing in large-scale structure, and not active galactic nuclei outflows (AGN), is the cause of the anisotropic quenching signal in massive galaxy clusters, however this may not be the cause in lower mass halos., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. We present the detection and characterization of TOI-4994b (TIC 277128619b), a warm Saturn-sized planet discovered by the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TOI-4994b transits a G-type star (V = 12.6 mag) with a mass, radius, and effective temperature of $M_{\star} =1.005^{+0.064}_{-0.061} M_{\odot}$, $R_{\star} = 1.055^{+0.040}_{-0.037} R_{\odot}$, and $T_{\rm eff} = 5640 \pm 110$ K. We obtained follow-up ground-based photometry from the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and the Antarctic Search for Transiting ExoPlanets (ASTEP) telescopes, and we confirmed the planetary nature of TOI-4994b with multiple radial velocity observations from the PFS, CHIRON, HARPS, FEROS, and CORALIE instruments. From a global fit to the photometry and radial velocities, we determine that TOI-4994b is in a 21.5-day, eccentric orbit ($e = 0.32 \pm 0.04$) and has a mass of $M_{P}= 0.280^{+0.037}_{-0.034} M_{J}$, a radius of $R_{P}= 0.762^{+0.030}_{-0.027}R_{J}$, and a Saturn-like bulk density of $\rho_{p} = 0.78^{+0.16}_{-0.14}$ $\rm g/cm^3$. We find that TOI-4994 is a potentially viable candidate for follow-up stellar obliquity measurements. The proliferation of nano-technology has enabled novel applications in various fields, including the potential for miniaturized terahertz (THz)-enabled devices. The extra-large bandwidth available in the THz spectrum can facilitate high-speed communication, even for transmission through lossy media. Culminating these capabilities, this paper introduces a new paradigm: Internet of Paint (IoP), transforming the 40,000-year-old concept of paint with extensive connectivity and sensing capabilities. IoP will enable seamless, massively parallel, and high-capacity communication and sensing capabilities, enabling innovative applications. IoP is expected to offer communication and sensing using nano-devices embedded in paint. In this paper, challenges towards the realization of IoP are discussed. Simulations indicate that THz signals in this stratified medium can form lateral waves that propagate along the Air-Paint interface and that relatively high channel capacity can be achieved by optimizing the transceiver locations, the paint thickness, and color. This study presents a simulated transceiver with a microstrip patch antenna (MPA) designed to operate at 150 GHz and embedded in a dielectric paint. The in-paint MPA (IP-MPA) is designed for the Internet of Paint (IoP) paradigm, which envisions seamless device communication through a paint layer on walls. Due to the paint's dielectric properties, the resonant frequency of the IP-MPA lowers to 141.3 GHz, with lower spreading loss. The study introduces a comprehensive channel model between transceivers in paint at arbitrary depths as well as IP-MPA angle orientations. The best transceiver orientations are analyzed for IoP channel performance. Our extensive evaluations shows that the lateral waves, which propagate along the air-paint interface, have the lowest loss, making this path the most reliable communication path between transceivers in paint. Further, all multipaths, except the reflected paths, are depth-independent when the received power is maximized. The findings suggest that the proposed network of IP-MPA-enabled transceivers for IoP has the potential to transform conventional walls into an integrated high-speed wireless communication infrastructure., Comment: 7 pages, 5 Figures, 3 Tables, Conference

We report the discovery and characterization of three new transiting giant planets orbiting TOI-6628, TOI-3837 and TOI-5027, and one new warm sub-Saturn orbiting TOI-2328, whose transits events were detected in the lightcurves of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite \textbf{(TESS)} space mission. By combining TESS lightcurves with ground-based photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations we confirm the planetary nature of the observed transits and radial velocity variations. TOI-6628~$b$ has a mass of 0.75$\pm$0.06~$M_\mathrm{J}$, a radius of 0.98$\pm$0.05~$R_J$ and is orbiting a metal-rich star with a period of 18.18424$\pm{0.00001}$ days and an eccentricity of 0.667$\pm0.016$, making it one of the most eccentric orbits of all known warm giants. TOI-3837~$b$ has a mass of 0.59$\pm$0.06~$M_\mathrm{J}$, a radius of 0.96$\pm$0.05~$R_J$ and orbits its host star every 11.88865$\pm$0.00003~days, with a moderate eccentricity of 0.198$^{+0.046}_{-0.058}$. With a mass of 2.01$\pm$0.13~$M_\mathrm{J}$ and a radius of 0.99$^{+0.07}_{-0.12}$ $R_J$, TOI-5027~$b$ orbits its host star in an eccentric orbit with $e$~=~0.395$^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ every 10.24368$\pm{0.00001}$~days. TOI-2328~$b$ is a Saturn-like planet with a mass of 0.16$\pm$0.02~$M_\mathrm{J}$ and a radius of 0.89$\pm$0.04~$R_J$, orbiting its host star in a nearly circular orbit with $e$~=~0.057$^{+0.046}_{-0.029}$ at an orbital period of 17.10197$\pm{0.00001}$ days. All four planets have orbital periods above 10 days, and our planet interior structure models are consistsent a rocky-icy core with a H/He envelope, providing evidence supporting the core accretion model of planet formation for this kind of planets., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures

The actions of a teacher are one of the strongest factors influencing students' academic achievement and future life success. However, some of the most common frameworks that are used to evaluate teachers and guide their development or improvement are not based on or informed by research about effective teaching methods. Other frameworks are difficult for schools, districts, teachers, and other relevant parties to access due to barriers such as cost. Considering the value of effective teaching, it is worthwhile for a teacher development and evaluation framework informed by research to be created and made easily available. This paper attempts to outline such a framework. This framework has never been researched in practice, but it is based on the available research regarding which teaching practices are generally most effective for students' learning and what sort of evaluation elements are most predictive and useful in assessing teachers. Given this, the framework may be a valuable tool to be used and/or adapted by schools, districts, teachers, and others involved in evaluating teacher effectiveness and guiding professional improvement for teachers.

With growing demand for online courses, it is important to assess the efficacy of quality online virtual instruction. This study investigates the impact of Edmentum's Courseware Algebra I on student achievement using data on 1,205 ninth-grade students from a large urban school district in the Midwest during the 2020-2021 school year. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study compares the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Mathematics scores of students participating in online virtual instruction to those receiving traditional in-person instruction. The study findings reveal that students in the online Algebra I course demonstrated significantly higher mathematics achievement than their peers in in-person classes, with an effect size of 0.13. The positive outcomes associated with Courseware Algebra I highlight its potential as an effective option for high school students.

The rapid proliferation of data centers in the US - driven partly by the adoption of artificial intelligence - has set off alarm bells about the industry's environmental impact. We compiled detailed information on 2,132 US data centers operating between September 2023 and August 2024 and determined their electricity consumption, electricity sources, and attributable CO$_{2}$e emissions. Our findings reveal that data centers accounted for more than 4% of total US electricity consumption - with 56% derived from fossil fuels - generating more than 105 million tons of CO$_{2}$e (2.18% of US emissions in 2023). Data centers' carbon intensity - the amount of CO$_{2}$e emitted per unit of electricity consumed - exceeded the US average by 48%. Our data pipeline and visualization tools can be used to assess current and future environmental impacts of data centers.

Given a source image of a clothed person (an image subject), AI-based nudification applications can produce nude (undressed) images of that person. Moreover, not only do such applications exist, but there is ample evidence of the use of such applications in the real world and without the consent of an image subject. Still, despite the growing awareness of the existence of such applications and their potential to violate the rights of image subjects and cause downstream harms, there has been no systematic study of the nudification application ecosystem across multiple applications. We conduct such a study here, focusing on 20 popular and easy-to-find nudification websites. We study the positioning of these web applications (e.g., finding that most sites explicitly target the nudification of women, not all people), the features that they advertise (e.g., ranging from undressing-in-place to the rendering of image subjects in sexual positions, as well as differing user-privacy options), and their underlying monetization infrastructure (e.g., credit cards and cryptocurrencies). We believe this work will empower future, data-informed conversations -- within the scientific, technical, and policy communities -- on how to better protect individuals' rights and minimize harm in the face of modern (and future) AI-based nudification applications. Rapid and accurate initialization of qubits, reset, is a crucial building block for various tasks in quantum information processing, such as quantum error-correction and estimation of statistics of noisy quantum devices with many qubits. We demonstrate unconditional reset of a frequency-tunable transmon qubit that simultaneously resets multiple excited states by utilizing a metamaterial waveguide engineered to provide a cold bath over a wide spectral range, while providing strong protection against Purcell decay of the qubit. We report reset error below 0.13% (0.16%) when prepared in the first (second) excited state of the transmon within 88ns. Additionally, through the sharp roll-off in the density of states of the metamaterial waveguide, we implement a leakage reduction unit that selectively resets the transmon's second excited state to 0.285(3)% residual population within 44ns while acting trivially in the computational subspace as an identity operation that preserves encoded information with an infidelity of 0.72(1)%., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Causal discovery with time series data remains a challenging yet increasingly important task across many scientific domains. Convergent cross mapping (CCM) and related methods have been proposed to study time series that are generated by dynamical systems, where traditional approaches like Granger causality are unreliable. However, CCM often yields inaccurate results depending upon the quality of the data. We propose the Tangent Space Causal Inference (TSCI) method for detecting causalities in dynamical systems. TSCI works by considering vector fields as explicit representations of the systems' dynamics and checks for the degree of synchronization between the learned vector fields. The TSCI approach is model-agnostic and can be used as a drop-in replacement for CCM and its generalizations. We first present a basic version of the TSCI algorithm, which is shown to be more effective than the basic CCM algorithm with very little additional computation. We additionally present augmented versions of TSCI that leverage the expressive power of latent variable models and deep learning. We validate our theory on standard systems, and we demonstrate improved causal inference performance across a number of benchmark tasks., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. Accepted to NeurIPS 2024

Prime-Cam, one of the primary instruments for the Fred Young Submillimeter Telescope (FYST) developed by the CCAT Collaboration, will house up to seven instrument modules, with the first operating at 280 GHz. Each module will include three arrays of superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). The first KID array fabricated for the 280 GHz module uses titanium-nitride (TiN) as the superconducting material and has 3,456 individual detectors, while the other two arrays use aluminum. This paper presents the design and laboratory characterization of the 280 GHz TiN array, which is cooled below its critical temperature to ~0.1 K and read out over six RF feedlines. LED mapping, a technique for matching the measured resonant frequency of a detector to its physical position, was performed on the array so that the results can be used to lithographically trim the KID capacitors and increase the yield of the array by reducing frequency collisions. Software development is a dynamic activity that requires engineers to work effectively with tools, processes, and collaborative teams. As a result, the presence of friction can significantly hinder productivity, increase frustration, and contribute to low morale among developers. By contrast, higher satisfaction levels are positively correlated with higher levels of perceived productivity. Hence, understanding the factors that cause bad experiences for developers is critical for fostering a positive and productive engineering environment. In this research, we employed a mixed-method approach, including interviews, surveys, diary studies, and analysis of developer telemetry data to uncover and triangulate common factors that cause "bad days" for developers. The interviews involved 22 developers across different levels and roles. The survey captured the perception of 214 developers about factors that cause them to have "bad days," their frequency, and their impact on job satisfaction. The daily diary study engaged 79 developers for 30 days to document factors that caused "bad days" in the moment. We examined the telemetry signals of 131 consenting participants to validate the impact of bad developer experience using system data. Findings from our research revealed factors that cause "bad days" for developers and significantly impact their work and well-being. We discuss the implications of these findings and suggest future work.

Generative AI coding tools are relatively new, and their impact on developers extends beyond traditional coding metrics, influencing beliefs about work and developers' roles in the workplace. This study aims to illuminate developers' preexisting beliefs about generative AI tools, their self perceptions, and how regular use of these tools may alter these beliefs. Using a mixed methods approach, including surveys, a randomized controlled trial, and a three week diary study, we explored the real world application of generative AI tools within a large multinational software company. Our findings reveal that the introduction and sustained use of generative AI coding tools significantly increases developers' perceptions of these tools as both useful and enjoyable. However, developers' views on the trustworthiness of AI generated code remained unchanged. We also discovered unexpected uses of these tools, such as replacing web searches and fostering creative ideation. Additionally, 84 percent of participants reported positive changes in their daily work practices, and 66 percent noted shifts in their feelings about their work, ranging from increased enthusiasm to heightened awareness of the need to stay current with technological advances. This research provides both qualitative and quantitative insights into the evolving role of generative AI in software development and offers practical recommendations for maximizing the benefits of this emerging technology, particularly in balancing the productivity gains from AI-generated code with the need for increased scrutiny and critical evaluation of its outputs., Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure

While DNA origami is a powerful bottom-up fabrication technique, the physical and chemical stability of DNA nanostructures is generally limited to aqueous buffer conditions. Wet chemical silicification can stabilise these structures but does not add further functionality. Here, we demonstrate a versatile 3D nanofabrication technique to conformally coat micrometre-sized DNA origami crystals with functional metal oxides via atomic layer deposition (ALD). In addition to depositing homogenous and conformal nanometre-thin ZnO, TiO2, and IrO2 (multi)layers inside SiO2-stablised crystals, we establish a method to directly coat bare DNA crystals with ALD layers while maintaining the crystal integrity, enabled by critical point drying and low ALD process temperatures. As a proof-of-concept application, we demonstrate electrocatalytic water oxidation using ALD IrO2-coated DNA origami crystals, resulting in improved performance relative to planar films. Overall, our coating strategy establishes a tool set for designing custom-made 3D nanomaterials with precisely defined topologies and material compositions, combining the unique advantages of DNA origami and atomically controlled deposition of functional inorganic materials.

Measurements of the EMC effect in the tritium and helium-3 mirror nuclei are reported. The data were obtained by the MARATHON Jefferson Lab experiment, which performed deep inelastic electron scattering from deuterium and the three-body nuclei, using a cryogenic gas target system and the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility of the Lab. The data cover the Bjorken $x$ range from 0.20 to 0.83, corresponding to a squared four-momentum transfer $Q^2$ range from 2.7 to $11.9\gevsq$, and to an invariant mass $W$ of the final hadronic state greater than 1.84 GeV/${\it c}^2$. The tritium EMC effect measurement is the first of its kind. Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly embedded into software products across diverse industries, enhancing user experiences, but at the same time introducing numerous challenges for developers. Unique characteristics of LLMs force developers, who are accustomed to traditional software development and evaluation, out of their comfort zones as the LLM components shatter standard assumptions about software systems. This study explores the emerging solutions that software developers are adopting to navigate the encountered challenges. Leveraging a mixed-method research, including 26 interviews and a survey with 332 responses, the study identifies 19 emerging solutions regarding quality assurance that practitioners across several product teams at Microsoft are exploring. We present the discovery of TOI-7041 b (TIC 201175570 b), a hot Saturn transiting a red giant star with measurable stellar oscillations. We observe solar-like oscillations in TOI-7041 with a frequency of maximum power of $\nu_{\rm max} = 218.50\pm2.23$ $\mu$Hz and a large frequency separation of $\Delta\nu = 16.5282\pm0.0186$ $\mu$Hz. Our asteroseismic analysis indicates that TOI-7041 has a radius of $4.10 \pm 0.06$(stat) $\pm$ 0.05(sys) $R_\odot$, making it one of the largest stars around which a transiting planet has been discovered with the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), and the mission's first oscillating red giant with a transiting planet. TOI-7041 b has an orbital period of $9.691 \pm 0.006$ days and a low eccentricity of $e = 0.04 \pm 0.04$. We measure a planet radius of $1.02 \pm 0.03$ $R_J$ with photometry from TESS, and a planet mass of $0.36 \pm 0.16$ $M_J$ ($114 \pm 51$ $M_\oplus$) with ground-based radial velocity measurements. TOI-7041 b appears less inflated than similar systems receiving equivalent incident flux, and its circular orbit indicates that it is not undergoing tidal heating due to circularization. The asteroseismic analysis of the host star provides some of the tightest constraints on stellar properties for a TESS planet host and enables precise characterization of the hot Saturn. This system joins a small number of TESS-discovered exoplanets orbiting stars that exhibit clear stellar oscillations and indicates that extended TESS observations of evolved stars will similarly provide a path to improved exoplanet characterization., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

In this study, we propose a novel approach to uncover subgroup-specific and subgroup-common latent factors addressing the challenges posed by the heterogeneity of neurological and mental disorders, which hinder disease understanding, treatment development, and outcome prediction. The proposed approach, sparse Group Factor Analysis (GFA) with regularised horseshoe priors, was implemented with probabilistic programming and can uncover associations (or latent factors) among multiple data modalities differentially expressed in sample subgroups. Synthetic data experiments showed the robustness of our sparse GFA by correctly inferring latent factors and model parameters. When applied to the Genetic Frontotemporal Dementia Initiative (GENFI) dataset, which comprises patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) with genetically defined subgroups, the sparse GFA identified latent disease factors differentially expressed across the subgroups, distinguishing between "subgroup-specific" latent factors within homogeneous groups and "subgroup common" latent factors shared across subgroups. The latent disease factors captured associations between brain structure and non-imaging variables (i.e., questionnaires assessing behaviour and disease severity) across the different genetic subgroups, offering insights into disease profiles. Importantly, two latent factors were more pronounced in the two more homogeneous FTD patient subgroups (progranulin (GRN) and microtubule-associated protein tau (MAPT) mutation), showcasing the method's ability to reveal subgroup-specific characteristics. These findings underscore the potential of sparse GFA for integrating multiple data modalities and identifying interpretable latent disease factors that can improve the characterization and stratification of patients with neurological and mental health disorders., Comment: 38 pages, 14 figures

We study random integer-valued Lipschitz functions on regular trees. It was shown by Peled, Samotij and Yehudayoff that such functions are localized, however, finer questions about the structure of Gibbs measures remain unanswered. Our main result is that the weak limit of a uniformly chosen 1-Lipschitz function with 0 boundary condition on a $d$-ary tree of height $n$ exists as $n \to \infty$ if $2 \le d \le 7$, but not if $d \ge 8$, thereby partially answering a question posed by Peled, Samotij and Yehudayoff. For large $d$, the value at the root alternates between being almost entirely concentrated on 0 for even $n$ and being roughly uniform on $\{-1,0,1\}$ for odd $n$, leading to different limits as $n$ approaches infinity along evens or odds. For $d \ge 8$, the essence of this phenomenon is preserved, which obstructs the convergence. For $d \le 7$, this phenomenon ceases to exist, and the law of the value at the root loses its connection with the parity of $n$. Along the way, we also obtain an alternative proof of localization. The key idea is a fixed point convergence result for a related operator on $\ell^\infty$, and a procedure to show that the iterations get into a `basin of attraction' of the fixed point. We also prove some accompanying analogous `even-odd phenomenon' type results about $M$-lipschitz functions on general non-amenable graphs with high enough expansion (this includes for example the large $d$ case for regular trees). We also prove a convergence result for 1-Lipschitz functions with $\{0,1\}$ boundary condition. This last result relies on an absolute value FKG for uniform 1-Lipschitz functions when shifted by $1/2$., Comment: 36 pages

This letter explores the implementation of a safe control law for systems of dynamically coupled cooperating agents. Under a CBF-based collaborative safety framework, we examine how the maximum safety capability for a given agent, which is computed using a collaborative safety condition, influences safety requests made to neighbors. We provide conditions under which neighbors may be resilient to non-compliance of neighbors to safety requests, and compute an upper bound for the total amount of non-compliance an agent is resilient to, given its 1-hop neighborhood state and knowledge of the network dynamics. In this paper, we develop a framework for the automatic taxiing of aircraft between hangar and take-off given a graph-based model of an airport. We implement a high-level path-planning algorithm that models taxiway intersections as nodes in an undirected graph, algorithmically constructs a directed graph according to the physical limitations of the aircraft, and finds the shortest valid taxi path through the directed graph using Dijkstra's algorithm. We then use this shortest path to construct a reference trajectory for the aircraft to follow that considers the turning capabilities of a given aircraft. Using high-order control barrier functions (HOCBFs), we construct safety conditions for multi-obstacle avoidance and safe reference tracking for simple 2D unicycle dynamics with acceleration control inputs. We then use these safety conditions to design an MPC-CBF framework that tracks the reference trajectory while adhering to the safety constraints. This work explores a collaborative method for ensuring safety in multi-agent formation control problems. We formulate a control barrier function (CBF) based safety filter control law for a generic distributed formation controller and extend our previously developed collaborative safety framework to an obstacle avoidance problem for agents with acceleration control inputs. We then incorporate multi-obstacle collision avoidance into the collaborative safety framework. This framework includes a method for computing the maximum capability of agents to satisfy their individual safety requirements. We analyze the convergence rate of our collaborative safety algorithm, and prove the linear-time convergence of cooperating agents to a jointly feasible safe action for all agents under the special case of a tree-structured communication network with a single obstacle for each agent. We illustrate the analytical results via simulation on a mass-spring kinematics-based formation controller and demonstrate the finite-time convergence of the collaborative safety algorithm in the simple proven case, the more general case of a fully-connected system with multiple static obstacles, and with dynamic obstacles., Comment: This work is under review for publication in Automatica. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2311.11156

We show that the Faraday effect can be derived from a simple two-state model. This approach uses a quantized electromagnetic field and does not make reference to differences in refractive indices of left- and right-circularly polarized light. Instead it treats the effect as a forward Rayleigh scattering process between two orthogonal modes of the quantized field, and thus emphasises the quantum-mechanical aspects of the phenomenon.

Actively participating in body movement such as dance, sports, and fitness activities is challenging for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV). Teachers primarily rely on verbal instructions and physical demonstrations with limited accessibility. Recent work shows that technology can support body movement education for BLV people. However, there is limited involvement with the BLV community and their teachers to understand their needs. By conducting a series of two surveys, 23 interviews and four focus groups, we gather the voices and perspectives of BLV people and their teachers. This provides a rich understanding of the challenges of body movement education. We identify ten major themes, four key design challenges, and propose potential solutions. We encourage the assistive technologies community to co-design potential solutions to these identified design challenges promoting the quality of life of BLV people and supporting the teachers in the provision of inclusive education.

Infinite nuclear matter provides valuable insights into the behavior of nuclear systems and aids our understanding of atomic nuclei and large-scale stellar objects such as neutron stars. However, partly due to the large basis needed to converge the system's binding energy, size-extensive methods such as coupled-cluster theory struggle with long computational run times, even using the nation's largest high-performance computing facilities. This research introduces a novel approach to the problem. We propose using a machine learning method to predict the coupled-cluster energies of infinite matter systems in the complete basis limit, leveraging only data collected using smaller basis sets. This method promises to deliver high-accuracy results with significantly reduced run times. The sequential regression extrapolation (SRE) algorithm, based on Gaussian processes, was created to perform these extrapolations. By combining Bayesian machine learning with a unique method of formatting the training data, we can create a powerful extrapolator that can make accurate predictions given very little data. The SRE algorithm successfully predicted the CCD(T) energies for pure neutron matter across six densities near nuclear saturation density, with an average error of 0.0083 MeV/N. The algorithm achieved an average error of 0.038 MeV/A for symmetric nuclear matter. These predictions were made with a time savings of 83.8 node hours for pure neutron matter and 284 node hours for symmetric nuclear matter. Additionally, the symmetry energy at these six densities was predicted with an average error of 0.031 MeV/A and a total time savings of 368 node hours compared to the traditional converged coupled-cluster calculations performed without the SRE algorithm.

This work presents a proof-of-concept solution designed to improve the accuracy of radiographic feature characterisation in pre-surgical CT/MR volumes. The solution involves 3D co-location of 2D digital histology slides within ex-vivo, tumour tissue CT volumes. In the initial step, laboratory measurements obtained during histology dissection were used to seed the placement of the individual histology slices in corresponding tumour tissue CT volumes. The process was completed by aligning corresponding bone in histology images to bone in the CT using in-plane point-based registration. Six bisected canine humerus datasets of ex-vivo CT and corresponding measurements were used to validate dissection placements. Digital seeding exhibited a plane misalignment of 0.19 +- 1.8 mm. User input sensitivity caused 0.08 +- 0.2 mm in plane translation and between 0 and 1.6 degrees deviation. These are of similar magnitude to reported misalignment of 0.9-1.3 mm and 1.1-1.9 degrees in related prostate histology co-location [1]. Although this work only reported on animal femur sarcoma CT images and histology slide images, the solution can be generalised to various sarcoma geometries and presentation sites. Furthermore, the solution co-locates high-fidelity data to advance tissue characterisation with minimal disruption to existing clinical workflows. Improved tissue characterisation accuracy, supported by the resolution of histology images, can enhance surgical planning accuracy and patient outcomes by bringing the insights offered by histology closer to the start of the presentation-diagnosis-planning-surgery-recovery loop., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We present a novel way to synthesise the radio emission from extensive air showers. It is a hybrid approach which uses a single microscopic Monte-Carlo simulation to generate the radio emission from a shower with a different longitudinal evolution, primary particle type and energy. The method employs semi-analytical relations which only depend on the shower parameters to transform the radio signal in the simulated antennas. We apply this method to vertical air showers with energies ranging from $10^{17}$ eV to $10^{19}$ eV and compare the results with CoREAS using two different metrics. In order to gauge the performance over our simulation set, we subsequently use every shower in the set as a template to synthesise the emission from the other showers. We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The measurements are performed in the pseudorapidity range $1.2<|\eta|<2$ and cover transverse momenta $1

The abundance and distribution of metal in asteroid surfaces can be constrained from thermal emission measurements at radio wavelengths, informing our understanding of planetesimal differentiation processes. We observed the M-type asteroid (22) Kalliope and its moon Linus in thermal emission at 1.3, 9, and 20 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) over most of Kalliope's rotation period. The 1.3 mm data provide ~30 km resolution on the surface of Kalliope, while both the 1.3 and 9 mm data resolve Linus from Kalliope. We find a thermal inertia for Kalliope of 116$^{+326}_{-91}$ J m$^{-2}$ s$^{-0.5}$ K$^{-1}$ and emissivities of 0.65$\pm$0.02 at 1.3 mm, 0.56$\pm$0.03 at 9 mm, and 0.77$\pm$0.02 at 20 mm. Kalliope's millimeter wavelength emission is suppressed compared to its centimeter wavelength emission, and is also depolarized. We measure emissivities for Linus of 0.73$\pm$0.04 and 0.85$\pm$0.17 at 1.3 and 9 mm respectively, indicating a less metal-rich surface composition for Linus. Spatial variability in Kalliope's emissivity reveals a region in the northern hemisphere with a high dielectric constant, suggestive of enhanced metal content. These results are together consistent with a scenario in which Linus formed from reaggregated ejecta from an impact onto a differentiated Kalliope, leaving Kalliope with a higher surface metal content than Linus, which is distributed heterogeneously across its surface. The low emissivity and lack of polarization suggest a reduced regolith composition where iron is in the form of metallic grains and constitutes ~25% of the surface composition., Comment: Accepted to PSJ

Giant planets on long period orbits around the nearest stars are among the easiest to directly image. Unfortunately these planets are difficult to fully constrain by indirect methods, e.g., transit and radial velocity (RV). In this study, we present the discovery of a super-Jupiter, HD 222237 b, orbiting a star located $11.445\pm0.002$ pc away. By combining RV data, Hipparcos and multi-epoch Gaia astrometry, we estimate the planetary mass to be ${5.19}_{-0.58}^{+0.58}\,M_{\rm Jup}$, with an eccentricity of ${0.56}_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$ and a period of ${40.8}_{-4.5}^{+5.8}$ yr, making HD 222237 b a promising target for imaging using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. A comparative analysis suggests that our method can break the inclination degeneracy and thus differentiate between prograde and retrograde orbits of a companion. We further find that the inferred contrast ratio between the planet and the host star in the F1550C filter ($15.50\,\mu \rm m$) is approximately $1.9\times10^{-4}$, which is comparable with the measured limit of the MIRI coronagraphs. The relatively low metallicity of the host star ($\rm-0.32\,dex$) combined with the unique orbital architecture of this system presents an excellent opportunity to probe the planet-metallicity correlation and the formation scenarios of giant planets., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS
