Search

Determining the inner structure of the molecular torus around an active galactic nucleus is essential for understanding its formation mechanism. However, spatially resolving the torus is difficult because of its small size. To probe the clump conditions in the torus, we therefore perform the systematic velocity-decomposition analyses of the gaseous CO rovibrational absorption lines ($v=0\to 1,\Delta J=\pm 1$) at $\lambda\sim 4.67 \mathrm{\mu{m}}$ observed toward four (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies using the high-resolution ($R\sim 5000\text{--}10000$) spectroscopy from the Subaru Telescope. We find that each transition has two to five distinct velocity components with different line-of-sight (LOS) velocities ($V_\mathrm{LOS}\sim -240\text{--}+100\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$) and dispersions ($\sigma_V\sim 15\text{--}190\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$); i.e., the components (a), (b), ..., beginning with the broadest one in each target, indicating that the tori have clumpy structures. By assuming a hydrostatic disk ($\sigma_V\propto R_\mathrm{rot}^{-0.5}$), we find that the tori have dynamic inner structures, with the innermost component (a) outflowing with velocity $|V_\mathrm{LOS}|\sim 160\text{--}240\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, and the outer components (b) and (c) outflowing more slowly or infalling with $|V_\mathrm{LOS}|\lesssim 100\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. In addition, we find that the innermost component (a) can be attributed to collisionally excited hot ($\gtrsim 530$K) and dense ($n_\mathrm{H_2}\gtrsim 10^6\mathrm{cm^{-3}}$) clumps, based on the level populations. Conversely, the outer component (b) can be attributed to cold ($\sim 30\text{--}140$K) clumps radiatively excited by a far-infrared-to-submillimeter background with a brightness temperature higher than $\sim 20\text{--}400$K. Understanding the rapid formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early universe requires an understanding of how stellar mass grows in the host galaxies. Here, we perform an analysis of rest-frame optical spectra and imaging from JWST of two quasar host galaxies at z>6 which exhibit Balmer absorption lines. These features in the stellar continuum indicate a lack of young stars, similar to low-redshift post-starburst galaxies whose star formation was recently quenched. We find that the stellar mass (log(M_* / M_sun) > 10.6) of each quasar host grew in a starburst episode at redshift 7 or 8. One of the targets exhibits little ongoing star formation, as evidenced by the photometric signature of the Balmer break and a lack of spatially resolved H-alpha emission, placing it well below the star formation main sequence at z = 6. The other galaxy is transitioning to a quiescent phase; together, the two galaxies represent the most distant massive post-starburst galaxies known. The maturity of these two galaxies is further supported by the stellar velocity dispersions of their host galaxies, placing them slightly above the upper end of the local M_BH - sigma_* relation. The properties of our two post-starburst galaxies, each hosting an active SMBH with log(M_BH / M_sun) > 9, suggests that black holes played a major role in shaping the formation of the first massive galaxies in the Universe., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures, submitted to a Nature journal

We investigate the physical origins of the Balmer decrement anomalies in GS-NDG-9422 (Cameron et al. 2023) and RXCJ2248-ID (Topping et al. 2024) galaxies at $z\sim 6$ whose $\mathrm{H}\alpha/\mathrm{H}\beta$ values are significantly smaller than $2.7$, the latter of which also shows anomalous $\mathrm{H}\gamma/\mathrm{H}\beta$ and $\mathrm{H}\delta/\mathrm{H}\beta$ values beyond the errors. Because the anomalous Balmer decrements are not reproduced under the Case B recombination, we explore the nebulae with the optical depths smaller and larger than the Case B recombination by physical modeling. We find two cases quantitatively explaining the anomalies; 1) density-bounded nebulae that are opaque only up to around Ly$\gamma$-Ly8 transitions and 2) ionization-bounded nebulae partly/fully surrounded by optically-thick excited H{\sc i} clouds. The case of 1) produces more H$\beta$ photons via Ly$\gamma$ absorption in the nebulae, requiring fine tuning in optical depth values, while this case helps ionizing photon escape for cosmic reionization. The case of 2) needs the optically-thick excited H{\sc i} clouds with $N_2\simeq 10^{12}-10^{13}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$, where $N_2$ is the column density of the hydrogen atom with the principal quantum number of $n=2$. Interestingly, the high $N_2$ values qualitatively agree with the recent claims for GS-NDG-9422 with the strong nebular continuum requiring a number of $2s$-state electrons and for RXCJ2248-ID with the dense ionized regions likely coexisting with the optically-thick clouds. While the physical origin of the optically-thick excited H{\sc i} clouds is unclear, these results may suggest gas clouds with excessive collisional excitation caused by an amount of accretion and supernovae in the high-$z$ galaxies., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent submillimeter observations have revealed signs of pc-scale molecular inflow and atomic outflow in the nearest Seyfert 2 galaxy, the Circinus galaxy. To verify the gas kinematics suggested by these observations, we performed molecular and atomic line transfer calculations based on a physics-based 3D radiation-hydrodynamic model, which has been compared with multi-wavelength observations in this paper series. The major axis position-velocity diagram (PVD) of CO(3-2) reproduces the observed faint emission at the systemic velocity, and our calculations confirm that this component originates from failed winds falling back to the disk plane. The minor-axis PVD of [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$), when created using only the gas with positive radial velocities, presents a sign of blue- and redshifted offset peaks similar to those in the observation, suggesting that the observed peaks indeed originate from the outflow, but that the model may lack outflows as strong as those in the Circinus galaxy. Similar to the observed HCN(3-2), the similar dense gas tracer HCO$^+$(3-2) can exhibit nuclear spectra with inverse P-Cygni profiles with $\sim$0.5 pc beams, but the line shape is azimuthally dependent. The corresponding continuum absorbers are inflowing clumps at 5-10 pc from the center. To detect significant absorption with a high probability, the inclination must be fairly edge-on ($\gtrsim$85$^\circ$), and the beam size must be small ($\lesssim$1 pc). We introduce a novel model to spectroscopically constrain the mid-infrared (MIR) extinction/attenuation curve from 3--17 um, using Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission drawn from an AKARI-Spitzer extragalactic cross-archival dataset. Currently proposed MIR extinction curves vary significantly in their slopes toward the near-infrared, and the variation of the strengths and shapes of the 9.7 um and 18 um silicate absorption features make MIR spectral modeling and interpretation challenging, particularly for heavily obscured galaxies. By adopting the basic premise that PAH bands have relatively consistent intrinsic ratios within dusty starbursting galaxies, we can, for the first time, empirically determine the overall shape of the MIR attenuation curve by measuring the differential attenuation at specific PAH wavelengths. Our attenuation model shows PAH emission in most (U)LIRGs is unambiguously subjected to attenuation, and we find strong evidence that PAH bands undergo differential attenuation as obscuration increases. Compared to pre-existing results, the MIR attenuation curve derived from the model favors relatively gray continuum absorption from 3-8 $\mu$m and silicate features with intermediate strength at 9.7 um but with stronger than typical 18 um opacity., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. We present a catalog of the millimeter-wave (mm-wave) continuum properties of 98 nearby ($z <$ 0.05) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) selected from the 70-month Swift/BAT hard X-ray catalog that have precisely determined X-ray spectral properties and subarcsec-resolution ALMA Band-6 (211--275 GHz) observations as of 2021 April. Due to the hard-X-ray ($>$ 10 keV) selection, the sample is nearly unbiased for obscured systems at least up to Compton-thick-level obscuration, and provides the largest number of AGNs with high physical resolution mm-wave data ($\lesssim$ 100--200 pc). Our catalog reports emission peak coordinates, spectral indices, and peak fluxes and luminosities at 1.3 mm (230 GHz). Additionally, high-resolution mm-wave images are provided. Using the images and creating radial surface brightness profiles of mm-wave emission, we identify emission extending from the central source and isolated blob-like emission. Flags indicating the presence of these emission features are tabulated. Among 90 AGNs with significant detections of nuclear emission, 37 AGNs ($\approx$ 41%) appear to have both or one of extended or blob-like components. We, in particular, investigate AGNs that show well-resolved mm-wave components and find that these seem to have a variety of origins (i.e., a jet, radio lobes, a secondary AGN, stellar clusters, a narrow line region, galaxy disk, active star-formation regions, and AGN-driven outflows), and some components have currently unclear origins., Comment: 49 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS

We present the results of our ALMA $\lesssim$0.5 kpc-resolution dense molecular line (HCN and HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1, J=3-2, and J=4-3) observations of 12 nearby (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). After matching beam sizes of all molecular line data to the same values in all (U)LIRGs, we derive molecular line flux ratios, by extracting spectra in the central 0.5, 1, 2 kpc circular regions, and 0.5-1 and 1-2 kpc annular regions. Based on non-LTE model calculations, we quantitatively confirm that the innermost ($\lesssim$0.5 kpc) molecular gas is very dense ($\gtrsim$10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$) and warm ($\gtrsim$300 K) in ULIRGs, and that in one LIRG is also modestly dense (10$^{4-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) and warm ($\sim$100 K). We then investigate the spatial variation of the HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ flux ratios and high-J to low-J flux ratios of HCN and HCO$^{+}$. A subtle sign of decreasing trend of these ratios from the innermost ($\lesssim$0.5 kpc) to outer nuclear (0.5-2 kpc) region is discernible in a significant fraction of the observed ULIRGs. For two AGN-hosting ULIRGs which display the trend most clearly, we find based on a Bayesian approach that the HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ abundance ratio and gas kinetic temperature systematically increase from the outer nuclear to the innermost region. We suggest that this trend comes from potential AGN effects, because no such spatial variation is found in a starburst-dominated LIRG., Comment: 62 pages, 29 figures. ApJ accepted. In order to investigate the far-infrared excess detected from the west hot spot of the radio galaxy Pictor A with the Herschel observatory, a submillimeter photometry is performed with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at Band 8 with the reference frequency of 405 GHz. A submillimeter source is discovered at the radio peak of the hot spot. Because the 405 GHz flux density of the source, $80.7\pm3.1$ mJy, agrees with the extrapolation of the synchrotron radio spectrum, the far-infrared excess is suggested to exhibit no major contribution at the ACA band. In contrast, by subtracting the power-law spectrum tightly constrained by the radio and ACA data, the significance of the excess in the Herschel band is well confirmed. No diffuse submillimeter emission is detected within the ACA field of view, and thus, the excess is ascribed to the west hot spot itself. In comparison to the previous estimate based on the Herschel data, the relative contribution of the far-infrared excess is reduced by a factor of $\sim 1.5$. The spectrum of the excess below the far-infrared band is determined to be harder than that of the diffusive shock acceleration. This strengthens the previous interpretation that the excess originates via the magnetic turbulence in the substructures within the hot spot. We investigated the inner buried nucleus of a nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418 using high-resolution spectroscopy of fundamental carbon monoxide (CO) ro-vibrational absorptions around $4.67 \mu$m for the first time. This method allowed us to examine the physical and kinematical properties in the hot inner region of this nucleus. We detected a series of both very deep (partly saturated) $^{12}$CO and moderately deep (optically thin) $^{13}$CO absorption lines and inferred a large column density ($N_\mathrm{H2}=(5\pm3)\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ in front of the $5 \mu$m photosphere) of warm ($T_\mathrm{ex}\simeq170$ K) molecular gas by assuming an isothermal plane-parallel slab illuminated by a compact background MIR-emitting source. We modeled that the warm CO absorber almost covers the central heating source and that it is an inner layer around the $5 \mu$m photosphere (at $r=$several pc) of a compact shroud of gas and dust ($d\sim100$ pc). The width of the absorption lines ($110$ km s$^{-1}$) and their small deviation from the systemic velocity ($<10$ km s$^{-1}$) are consistent with a warm and turbulent layer with little bulk motion in the radial direction., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Active galaxies contain a supermassive black hole at their center, which grows by accreting matter from the surrounding galaxy. The accretion process in the central ~10 parsecs has not been directly resolved in previous observations, due to the small apparent angular sizes involved. We observed the active nucleus of the Circinus Galaxy using sub-millimeter interferometry. A dense inflow of molecular gas is evident on sub-parsec scales. We calculate that less than 3% of this inflow is accreted by the black hole, with the rest being ejected by multiphase outflows, providing feedback to the host galaxy. GREX-PLUS (Galaxy Reionization EXplorer and PLanetary Universe Spectrometer) is a mission candidate for a JAXA's strategic L-class mission to be launched in the 2030s. Its primary sciences are two-fold: galaxy formation and evolution and planetary system formation and evolution. The GREX-PLUS spacecraft will carry a 1.2 m primary mirror aperture telescope cooled down to 50 K. The two science instruments will be onboard: a wide-field camera in the 2-8 $\mu$m wavelength band and a high resolution spectrometer with a wavelength resolution of 30,000 in the 10-18 $\mu$m band. The GREX-PLUS wide-field camera aims to detect the first generation of galaxies at redshift $z>15$. The GREX-PLUS high resolution spectrometer aims to identify the location of the water ``snow line'' in proto-planetary disks. Both instruments will provide unique data sets for a broad range of scientific topics including galaxy mass assembly, origin of supermassive blackholes, infrared background radiation, molecular spectroscopy in the interstellar medium, transit spectroscopy for exoplanet atmosphere, planetary atmosphere in the Solar system, and so on., Comment: This document is the first version of a collection of scientific themes which can be achieved with GREX-PLUS. We report the results of ALMA 1-2 kpc-resolution, three rotational transition line (J=2-1, J=3-2, and J=4-3) observations of multiple dense molecular gas tracers (HCN, HCO$^{+}$, and HNC) for ten nearby (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs). Following the matching of beam sizes to 1-2 kpc for each (U)LIRG, the high-J to low-J transition-line flux ratios of each molecule and the emission line flux ratios of different molecules at each J transition are derived. We conduct RADEX non-LTE model calculations and find that, under a wide range of gas density and kinetic temperature, the observed HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ flux ratios in the overall (U)LIRGs are naturally reproduced with enhanced HCN abundance compared to HCO$^{+}$. Thereafter, molecular gas properties are constrained primarily through the use of HCN and HCO$^{+}$ data and the adoption of fiducial values for the HCO$^{+}$ column density and HCN-to-HCO$^{+}$ abundance ratio. We quantitatively confirm the following: (1) Molecular gas at the (U)LIRGs' nuclei is dense ($\gtrsim$10$^{3-4}$ cm$^{-3}$) and warm ($\gtrsim$100 K). (2) Molecular gas density and temperature in nine ULIRGs' nuclei are significantly higher than that of one LIRG's nucleus. (3) Molecular gas in starburst-dominated sources tends to be less dense and cooler than ULIRGs with luminous AGN signatures. For six selected sources, we also apply a Bayesian approach by freeing all parameters and support the above main results. Our ALMA 1-2 kpc resolution, multiple transition-line data of multiple molecules are a very powerful tool for scrutinizing the properties of molecular gas concentrated around luminous energy sources in nearby (U)LIRGs' nuclei., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures. The detection of starlight from the host galaxies of quasars during the reionization epoch ($z>6$) has been elusive, even with deep HST observations. The current highest redshift quasar host detected, at $z=4.5$, required the magnifying effect of a foreground lensing galaxy. Low-luminosity quasars from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) mitigate the challenge of detecting their underlying, previously-undetected host galaxies. Here we report rest-frame optical images and spectroscopy of two HSC-SSP quasars at $z>6$ with JWST. Using NIRCam imaging at 3.6$\mu$m and 1.5$\mu$m and subtracting the light from the unresolved quasars, we find that the host galaxies are massive (stellar masses of $13\times$ and $3.4\times$ $10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively), compact, and disk-like. NIRSpec medium-resolution spectroscopy shows stellar absorption lines in the more massive quasar, confirming the detection of the host. Velocity-broadened gas in the vicinity of these quasars enables measurements of their black hole masses ($1.4\times 10^9$ and $2.0\times$ $10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$, respectively). Their location in the black hole mass - stellar mass plane is consistent with the distribution at low redshift, suggesting that the relation between black holes and their host galaxies was already in place less than a billion years after the Big Bang., Comment: Matched to the published Nature version of the article. 27 pages, 4 main figures, 1 table, 6 supplementary figures, 2 supplementary table

To understand the origin of nuclear ($\lesssim$ 100 pc) millimeter-wave (mm-wave) continuum emission in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we systematically analyzed sub-arcsec resolution Band-6 (211-275 GHz) ALMA data of 98 nearby AGNs ($z <$ 0.05) from the 70-month Swift/BAT catalog. The sample, almost unbiased for obscured systems, provides the largest number of AGNs to date with high mm-wave spatial resolution sampling ($\sim$ 1-200 pc), and spans broad ranges of 14-150 keV luminosity {$40 < \log[L_{\rm 14-150}/({\rm erg\,s^{-1}})] < 45$}, black hole mass [$5 < \log(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) < 10$], and Eddington ratio ($-4 < \log \lambda_{\rm Edd} < 2$). We find a significant correlation between 1.3 mm (230 GHz) and 14-150 keV luminosities. Its scatter is $\approx$ 0.36 dex, and the mm-wave emission may serve as a good proxy of the AGN luminosity, free of dust extinction up to $N_{\rm H} \sim 10^{26}$ cm$^{-2}$. While the mm-wave emission could be self-absorbed synchrotron radiation around the X-ray corona according to past works, we also discuss different possible origins of the mm-wave emission; AGN-related dust emission, outflow-driven shocks, and a small-scale ($<$ 200 pc) jet. The dust emission is unlikely to be dominant, as the mm-wave slope is generally flatter than expected. Also, due to no increase in the mm-wave luminosity with the Eddington ratio, a radiation-driven outflow model is possibly not the common mechanism. Furthermore, we find independence of the mm-wave luminosity on indicators of the inclination angle from the polar axis of the nuclear structure, which is inconsistent with a jet model whose luminosity depends only on the angle., Comment: 44 pages, 35 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ; modified format, added supplementary figure (Fig. 32)

A recent hydrodynamic model, "radiation-driven fountain model" (Wada et al. 2016), presented a dynamical picture that active galactic nuclei (AGNs) tori sustain their geometrical thickness by gas circulation around AGNs, and previous papers confirmed that this picture is consistent with multi-wavelength observations of nearby Seyfert galaxies. Recent near-infrared observations implied that CO rovibrational absorption lines ($\Delta J=\pm1$, $v=0-1$, $\lambda \sim 4.7$ $\mathrm{\mu m}$) could probe physical properties of the inside tori. However, the origin of the CO absorption lines has been under debate. In this paper, we investigate the origin of the absorption lines and conditions for detecting them by performing line radiative transfer calculations based on the radiation-driven fountain model. We find that CO rovibrational absorption lines are detected at inclination angles $\theta_\mathrm{obs} = 50-80$ $^{\circ}$. At the inclination angle $\theta_\mathrm{obs} = 77$ $^{\circ}$, we observe multi-velocity components: inflow ($v_\mathrm{LOS}=30$ $\mathrm{kms^{-1}}$), systemic ($v_\mathrm{LOS}=0 \, \mathrm{kms^{-1}}$), and outflows ($v_\mathrm{LOS}=-75,\, -95,$ and $-105$ $\mathrm{kms^{-1}}$). The inflow and outflow components ($v_\mathrm{LOS}= 30$ and $-95$ $\mathrm{kms^{-1}}$) are collisionally excited at the excitation temperature of $186$ and $380$ K up to $J=12$ and $4$, respectively. The inflow and outflow components originate from the accreting gas on the equatorial plane at $1.5$ pc from the AGN center and the outflowing gas driven by AGN radiation pressure at $1.0$ pc, respectively. These results suggest that CO rovibrational absorption lines can provide us with the velocities and kinetic temperatures of the inflow and outflow in the inner a-few-pc regions of AGN tori, and the observations can probe the gas circulation inside the tori., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Dust Obscured Galaxies (DOGs), which are observationally characterized as faint in the optical and bright in the infrared, are the final stage of galaxy mergers and are essential objects in the evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, the relationship between torus-scale gas dynamics around AGNs and DOGs lifetime remain unclear. We obtained evolution of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a galaxy merger system with AGN feedback, from post-processed pseudo-observations based on an N-body/Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation. We focused on a late stage merger of two identical galaxies with a supermassive black hole (SMBH) of 10$^8$ M$_\odot$. We found that the infrared luminosity of the system reaches ultra- and hyper-luminous infrared galaxy classes (10$^{12}$ and 10$^{13}$ L$_\odot$, respectively). The DOGs phase corresponds to a state in which the AGNs are buried in dense gas and dust, with the infrared luminosity exceeding 3.3 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ L$_\odot$. We also identified the sub-categories of DOGs, namely bump and power-law DOGs from the SEDs and their evolution. The bump DOGs tend to evolve to power-law DOGs on several Myrs. We found that contribution from the hot dust around the nucleus in the infrared radiation is essential for identifying the system as a power-law DOG; the gas and dust distribute non-spherically around the nucleus, therefore, the observed properties of DOGs depend on the viewing angle. In our model, the lifetime of merger-driven DOGs is less than 4 Myrs, suggesting that the observed DOGs phase is a brief aspect of galaxy mergers., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 17208$-$0014 is a late-stage merger that hosts a buried active galactic nucleus (AGN). To investigate its nuclear structure, we performed high spatial resolution ($\sim0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}04\sim32\,\mathrm{pc}$) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations in Band 9 ($\sim$450\,\micron\ or $\sim$660\,GHz), along with near-infrared AKARI spectroscopy in 2.5--5.0\,\micron. The Band 9 dust continuum peaks at the AGN location, and toward this position CO($J$=6--5) and CS($J$=14--13) are detected in absorption. Comparison with non-local thermal equilibrium calculations indicates that, within the central beam ($r\sim20\,\mathrm{pc}$), there exists a concentrated component that is dense ($10^7\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$) and warm ($>$200\,K) and has a large column density ($N_\mathrm{H_2}>10^{23}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$). The AKARI spectrum shows deep and broad CO ro-vibrational absorption at 4.67\,\micron. Its band profile is well reproduced with a similarly dense and large column but hotter ($\sim$1000\,K) gas. The region observed through absorption in the near-infrared is highly likely in the nuclear direction, as in the sub-millimeter, but with a narrower beam including a region closer to the nucleus. The central component is considered to possess a hot structure where vibrationally excited HCN emission originates. The most plausible heating source for the gas is X-rays from the AGN. The AKARI spectrum does not show other AGN signs in 2.5--4\,\micron, but this absence may be usual for AGNs buried in a hot mid-infrared core. We present the results of ALMA $\sim$2 mm, $\lesssim$1$''$-resolution observations of ten (ultra)luminous infrared galaxies ([U]LIRGs; infrared luminosity $\gtrsim$ 10$^{11.7}$L$_{\odot}$) at $z <$ 0.15, targeting dense ($>$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$) molecular (HCN, HCO$^{+}$, and HNC J=2-1) and 183 GHz H$_{2}$O 3$_{1,3}$-2$_{2,0}$ emission lines. Higher HCN to HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1 flux ratios are observed in some, but not all, AGN-important ULIRGs than in starburst-classified sources. We detect 183 GHz H$_{2}$O emission in almost all AGN-important ULIRGs, and elevated H$_{2}$O emission is found in two sources with elevated HCN J=2-1 emission, relative to HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1. Except one ULIRG (the Superantennae), the H$_{2}$O emission largely comes from the entire nuclear regions ($\sim$1 kpc), rather than AGN-origin megamaser at the very center ($<<$1 kpc). Nuclear ($\sim$1 kpc) dense molecular gas mass derived from HCO$^{+}$ J=2-1 luminosity is $\gtrsim$a few $\times$ 10$^{8}$M$_{\odot}$, and its depletion time is estimated to be $\gtrsim$10$^{6}$ yr in all sources. Vibrationally excited J=2-1 emission lines of HCN and HNC are detected in a few (U)LIRGs, but those of HCO$^{+}$ are not. It is suggested that in mid-infrared-radiation-exposed innermost regions around energy sources, HCO$^{+}$ and HNC are substantially less abundant than HCN. In our ALMA $\sim$2 mm data of ten (U)LIRGs, two continuum sources are serendipitously detected within $\sim$10$''$, which are likely to be an infrared luminous dusty galaxy at $z >$ 1 and a blazar., Comment: 50 pages, 16 Figures. As part of the Measuring Black Holes in Below Milky Way-mass (M$^\star$) galaxies (MBHBM$^\star$) Project, we present a dynamical measurement of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3593, using cold molecular gas $^{12}$CO(2-1) emission observed at an angular resolution of $\approx0''.3$ ($\approx10$ pc) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Our ALMA observations reveal a circumnuclear molecular gas disc (CND) elongated along the galaxy major axis and rotating around the SMBH. Using dynamical modelling, the molecular gas kinematics allow us to infer a SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}=2.40_{-1.05}^{+1.87}\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ (only statistical uncertainties at the $3\sigma$ level). We also detect a massive core of cold molecular gas (CMC) of mass $M_{\rm CMC}=(5.4\pm1.2)\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ and effective (half-mass) radius $r_{\rm CMC,e}=11.2\pm2.8$ pc, co-spatial with a nuclear star cluster (NSC) of mass $M_{\rm NSC}=(1.67\pm0.48)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$ and effective radius $r_{\rm NSC,e}=5.0\pm1.0$~pc (or $0''.15\pm0''.03$). The mass profiles of the CMC and NSC are well described by S\'{e}rsic functions with indices $1-1.4$. Our $M_{\rm BH}$ and $M_{\rm NSC}$ estimates for NGC 3593 agree well with the recently compiled $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_{\rm NSC}$ scaling relation. Although the $M_{\rm NSC}$ uncertainty is twice the inferred $M_{\rm BH}$, the rapid central rise of the rotation velocities of the CND (as the radius decreases) clearly suggests a SMBH. Indeed, our dynamical models show that even if $M_{\rm NSC}$ is at the upper end of its allowed range, the evidence for a black hole does not vanish, but remains with a lower limit of $M_{\rm BH}>3\times10^5$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 27 pages, 18 Figures, 8 Tables. To investigate the role of active galactic nucleus (AGN) X-ray irradiation on the interstellar medium (ISM), we systematically analyzed Chandra and ALMA CO($J$=2-1) data for 26 ultra-hard X-ray ($>$ 10 keV) selected AGNs at redshifts below 0.05. While Chandra unveils the distribution of X-ray-irradiated gas via Fe-K$\alpha$ emission, the CO($J$=2-1) observations reveal that of cold molecular gas. At high resolutions $\lesssim$ 1 arcsec, we derive Fe-K$\alpha$ and CO($J$=2-1) maps for the nuclear 2 arcsec region, and for the external annular region of 2 arcsec-4 arcsec, where 2 arcsec is $\sim$ 100-600 pc for most of our AGNs. First, focusing on the external regions, we find the Fe-K$\alpha$ emission for six AGNs above 2$\sigma$. Their large equivalent widths ($\gtrsim$ 1 keV) suggest a fluorescent process as their origin. Moreover, by comparing 6-7 keV/3-6 keV ratio, as a proxy of Fe-K$\alpha$, and CO($J$=2-1) images for three AGNs with the highest significant Fe-K$\alpha$ detections, we find a possible spatial separation. These suggest the presence of X-ray-irradiated ISM and the change in the ISM properties. Next, examining the nuclear regions, we find that (1) The 20-50 keV luminosity increases with the CO($J$=2-1) luminosity. (2) The ratio of CO($J$=2-1)-to-HCN($J$=1-0) luminosities increases with 20-50 keV luminosity, suggesting a decrease in the dense gas fraction with X-ray luminosity. (3) The Fe-K$\alpha$-to-X-ray continuum luminosity ratio decreases with the molecular gas mass. This may be explained by a negative AGN feedback scenario: the mass accretion rate increases with gas mass, and simultaneously, the AGN evaporates a portion of the gas, which possibly affects star formation., Comment: 50 pages (27 pages for the main body), 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

We conducted systematic observations of the H I Br$\alpha$ (4.05 $\mu$m) and Br$\beta$ (2.63 $\mu$m) lines in 52 nearby ($z<0.3$) ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with AKARI. Among 33 ULIRGs wherein the lines are detected, three galaxies show anomalous Br$\beta$/Br$\alpha$ line ratios ($\sim1.0$), which are significantly higher than those for case B (0.565). Our observations also show that ULIRGs have a tendency to exhibit higher Br$\beta$/Br$\alpha$ line ratios than those observed in Galactic H II regions. The high Br$\beta$/Br$\alpha$ line ratios cannot be explained by a combination of dust extinction and case B since dust extinction reduces the ratio. We explore possible causes for the high Br$\beta$/Br$\alpha$ line ratios and show that the observed ratios can be explained by a combination of an optically thick Br$\alpha$ line and an optically thin Br$\beta$ line. We simulated the H II regions in ULIRGs with the Cloudy code, and our results show that the high Br$\beta$/Br$\alpha$ line ratios can be explained by high-density conditions, wherein the Br$\alpha$ line becomes optically thick. To achieve a column density large enough to make the Br$\alpha$ line optically thick within a single H II region, the gas density must be as high as $n\sim10^8$ $\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. We therefore propose an ensemble of H II regions, in each of which the Br$\alpha$ line is optically thick, to explain the high Br$\beta$/Br$\alpha$ line ratio., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Understanding the inner structure of the clumpy molecular torus surrounding the active galactic nucleus is essential in revealing the forming mechanism. However, spatially resolving the torus is difficult because of its size of a few parsecs. Thus, to probe the clump conditions in the torus, we performed the velocity decomposition of the CO rovibrational absorption lines ($\Delta{v}=0\to 1,\ \Delta{J}=\pm 1$) at $\lambda\sim 4.67\,\mathrm{\mu{m}}$ observed toward an ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 08572+3915 NW with the high-resolution spectroscopy ($R\sim 10{,}000$) of Subaru Telescope. Consequently, we found that each transition had two outflowing components, i.e., (a) and (b), both at approximately $\sim -160\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, but with broad and narrow widths, and an inflowing component, i.e., (c), at approximately $\sim +100\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$, which were attributed to the torus. The ratios of the velocity dispersions of each component lead to those of the rotating radii around the black hole of $R_\mathrm{rot,a}:R_\mathrm{rot,b}:R_\mathrm{rot,c}\approx 1:5:17$, indicating the torus where clumps are outflowing in the inner regions and inflowing in the outer regions if a hydrostatic disk with $\sigma_V\propto R_\mathrm{rot}^{-0.5}$ is assumed. Based on the kinetic temperature of components (a) and (b) of $\sim 720\,\mathrm{K}$ and $\sim 25\,\mathrm{K}$ estimated from the level population, the temperature gradient is $T_\mathrm{kin}\propto R_\mathrm{rot}^{-2.1}$. We studied the absorption features of CO lines against the continuum originating from the heated dust in the obscuring tori around active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We investigated the formation of absorption lines corresponding to the CO rotational transitions using three-dimensional non-LTE line transfer simulations considering the dust thermal emission. As in Papers I--III of this series, we performed post-processed radiative transfer calculations using the "radiation-driven fountain model" (wada2016}, which yields a geometrically thick obscuring structure around the nucleus. This model is consistent with the spectral energy distribution of the nearest type-2 Seyfert galaxy, the Circinus galaxy. We found that the continuum-subtracted channel maps of $J = 4-3$ and higher transitions show absorption regions along the disk mid-plane for an edge-on viewing angle. The spectra consist of multiple absorption and emission features, reflecting the internal inhomogeneous and turbulent structure of the torus. The deepest absorption feature is caused by the gas on the near-side of the torus between $r =10$ and 15 pc, which is located in front of the AGN-heated dust inside $r \simeq 5$ pc. We also found that a spatial resolution of 0.5--1.0 pc is necessary to resolve the absorption features. Moreover, the inclination angle must be close to the edge-on angle (i.e., $\sim 85^\circ$) to observe the absorption features. The findings of the present study imply that combining our radiation-hydrodynamic model with high-resolution observations of CO (7-6) by ALMA can provide new information about the internal structure of the molecular tori in nearby AGNs., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted by Astrophysical Journal

We present ALMA [CII] 158 $\mu$m line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations ($0''.70 \times 0''.56$ resolution) toward HSC J124353.93$+$010038.5 (J1243$+$0100) at $z = 7.07$, the only low-luminosity ($M_{\rm 1450} > -25$ mag) quasar currently known at $z > 7$. The FIR continuum is bright (1.52 mJy) and resolved with a total luminosity of $L_{\rm FIR} = 3.5 \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$. The spatially extended component is responsible for $\sim 40\%$ of the emission. The area-integrated [CII] spectrum shows a broad wing (${\rm FWHM} = 997$ km s$^{-1}$, $L_{\rm [CII]} = 1.2 \times 10^9~L_\odot$) as well as a bright core (${\rm FWHM} = 235$ km s$^{-1}$, $L_{\rm [CII]} = 1.9 \times 10^9~L_\odot$). This wing is the first detection of a galactic-scale quasar-driven outflow (atomic outflow rate $> 447~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$) at $z > 7$. The estimated large mass loading factor of the total outflow (e.g., $\gtrsim 9$ relative to the [CII]-based SFR) suggests that this outflow will soon quench the star-formation of the host. The core gas dynamics are governed by rotation, with a rotation curve suggestive of a compact bulge ($\sim 3.3 \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$), although it is not yet spatially resolved. Finally, we found that J1243$+$0100 has a black hole mass-to-dynamical mass ratio (and -to-bulge mass ratio) of $\sim 0.4\%$ ($\sim 1\%$), consistent with the local value within uncertainties. We present a supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass measurement in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC7469 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the atomic-${\rm [CI]}$(1-0) and molecular-$^{12}$CO(1-0) emission lines at the spatial resolution of $\approx0.3$" (or $\approx$ 100 pc). These emissions reveal that NGC7469 hosts a circumnuclear gas disc (CND) with a ring-like structure and a two-arm/bi-symmetric spiral pattern within it, surrounded by a starbursting ring. The CND has a relatively low $\sigma/V\approx0.35$ ($r\sim0.5$") and $\sim0.19$ ($r>0.5"$), suggesting that the gas is dynamically settled and suitable for dynamically deriving the mass of its central source. As is expected from X-ray dominated region (XDR) effects that dramatically increase an atomic carbon abundance by dissociating CO molecules, we suggest that the atomic [CI](1-0) emission is a better probe of SMBH masses than CO emission in AGNs. Our dynamical model using the ${\rm [CI]}$(1-0) kinematics yields a $M_{\rm BH}=1.78^{+2.69}_{-1.10}\times10^7$M$_\odot$ and $M/L_{\rm F547M}=2.25^{+0.40}_{-0.43}$ (M$_\odot$/L$_\odot$). The model using the CO(1-0) kinematics also gives a consistent $M_{\rm BH}$ with a larger uncertainty, up to an order of magnitude, i.e.\ $M_{\rm BH}=1.60^{+11.52}_{-1.45}\times10^7$M$_\odot$. This newly dynamical $M_{\rm BH}$ is $\approx$ 2 times higher than the mass determined from the reverberation mapped (RM) method using emissions arising in the unresolved broad-line region (BLR). Given this new $M_{\rm BH}$, we are able to constrain the specific RM dimensionless scaling factor of $f=7.2^{+4.2}_{-3.4}$ for the AGN BLR in NGC7469. The gas within the unresolved BLR thus has a Keplerian virial velocity component and the inclination of $i\approx11.0^\circ$$_{-2.5}^{+2.2}$, confirming its face-on orientation in a Seyfert 1 AGN by assuming a geometrically thin BLR model., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. We present ALMA [C II] 158 $\mu$m line and far-infrared (FIR) continuum emission observations toward HSC J120505.09$-$000027.9 (J1205$-$0000) at $z = 6.72$ with the beam size of $\sim 0''.8 \times 0''.5$ (or 4.1 kpc $\times$ 2.6 kpc), the most distant red quasar known to date. Red quasars are modestly reddened by dust, and are thought to be in rapid transition from an obscured starburst to an unobscured normal quasar, driven by powerful active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback which blows out a cocoon of interstellar medium (ISM). The FIR continuum of J1205$-$0000 is bright, with an estimated luminosity of $L_{\rm FIR} \sim 3 \times 10^{12}~L_\odot$. The [C II] line emission is extended on scales of $r \sim 5$ kpc, greater than the FIR continuum. The line profiles at the extended regions are complex and broad (FWHM $\sim 630-780$ km s$^{-1}$). Although it is not practical to identify the nature of this extended structure, possible explanations include (i) companion/merging galaxies and (ii) massive AGN-driven outflows. For the case of (i), the companions are modestly star-forming ($\sim 10~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$), but are not detected by our Subaru optical observations ($y_{\rm AB,5\sigma} = 24.4$ mag). For the case of (ii), our lower-limit to the cold neutral outflow rate is $\sim 100~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. The outflow kinetic energy and momentum are both much smaller than what predicted in energy-conserving wind models, suggesting that the AGN feedback in this quasar is not capable of completely suppressing its star formation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a large sample of 2.5-38 $\mu m$ galaxy spectra drawn from a cross-archival comparison in the AKARI-Spitzer Extragalactic Spectral Survey (ASESS), and investigate a subset of 113 star-forming galaxies with prominent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission spanning a wide range of star formation properties. With AKARI's extended 2.5-5 $\mu m$ wavelength coverage, we self-consistently model for the first time all PAH emission bands using a modified version of PAHFIT. We find $L_\mathrm{PAH\,3.3}/L_\mathrm{IR}$ $\sim$ 0.1% and the 3.3 $\mu m$ PAH feature contributes $\sim$1.5-3% to the total PAH power -- somewhat less than earlier dust models have assumed. We establish a calibration between 3.3 $\mu m$ PAH emission and star formation rate, but also find regimes where it loses reliability, including at high luminosity and low metallicity. The 3.4 $\mu m$ aliphatic emission and a broad plateau feature centered at 3.47 $\mu m$ are also modeled. As the shortest wavelength PAH feature, 3.3 $\mu m$ is susceptible to attenuation, leading to a factor of $\sim$ 3 differences in the inferred star formation rate at high obscuration with different assumed attenuation geometries. Surprisingly, $L_\mathrm{PAH\, 3.3} / L_\mathrm{\Sigma\, PAH}$ shows no sign of decline at high luminosities, and the low metallicity dwarf galaxy II Zw 40 exhibits an unusually strong 3.3 $\mu m$ band; both results suggest either that the smallest PAHs are better able to survive under intense radiation fields than presumed, or that PAH emission is shifted to shorter wavelengths in intense and high energy radiation environments. A photometric surrogate for 3.3 $\mu m$ PAH luminosity using JWST/NIRCam is provided and found to be highly reliable at low redshift., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures, accepted in ApJ

We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) emission lines around the type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) of NGC 7469 ($z = 0.0164$) at $\sim 100$ pc resolutions. The CO lines are bright both in the circumnuclear disk (central $\sim 300$ pc) and the surrounding starburst (SB) ring ($\sim 1$ kpc diameter), with two bright peaks on either side of the AGN. By contrast, the [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) line is strongly peaked on the AGN. Consequently, the brightness temperature ratio of [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) to $^{13}$CO(2-1) is $\sim 20$ at the AGN, as compared to $\sim 2$ in the SB ring. Our local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE models indicate that the enhanced line ratios (or CI enhancement) are due to an elevated C$^0$/CO abundance ratio ($\sim 3-10$) and temperature ($\sim 100-500$ K) around the AGN as compared to the SB ring (abundance ratio $\sim 1$, temperature $\lesssim 100$ K), which accords with the picture of the X-ray-dominated Region (XDR). Based on dynamical modelings, we also provide CO(1-0)-to- and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$)-to-molecular mass conversion factors at the central $\sim 100$ pc of this AGN as $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 4.1$ and $\alpha_{\rm CI} = 4.4~M_\odot$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$, respectively. Our results suggest that the CI enhancement is potentially a good marker of AGNs that could be used in a new submillimeter diagnostic method toward dusty environments., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables. We report spatial distributions of the Fe-K$\alpha$ line at 6.4 keV and the CO($J$ = 2--1) line at 230.538 GHz in NGC 2110, which are respectively revealed by $Chandra$ and ALMA at $\approx$ 0.5 arcsec. A $Chandra$ 6.2--6.5 keV-to-3.0--6.0 keV image suggests that the Fe-K$\alpha$ emission extends preferentially in a northwest-to-southeast direction out to $\sim$ 3 arcsec, or 500 pc, on each side. Spatially-resolved spectral analyses support this by finding significant Fe-K$\alpha$ emission lines only in northwest and southeast regions. Moreover, their equivalent widths are found $\sim$ 1.5 keV, indicative for the fluorescence by nuclear X-ray irradiation as the physical origin. By contrast, CO($J$ = 2--1) emission is weak therein. For quantitative discussion, we derive ionization parameters by following an X-ray dominated region (XDR) model. We then find them high enough to interpret the weakness as the result of X-ray dissociation of CO and/or H$_2$. Another possibility also remains that CO molecules follow a super-thermal distribution, resulting in brighter emission in higher-$J$ lines. Further follow-up observations are encouraged to draw a conclusion on what predominantly changes the inter-stellar matter properties, and whether the X-ray irradiation eventually affects the surrounding star formation as an AGN feedback., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. We present a systematic study of the 3.0 um H2O ice and the 3.4 um aliphatic carbon absorption features toward 48 local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) using spectra obtained by the AKARI Infrared Camera to investigate the UV environment in their star-forming regions. All the ULIRGs in our sample exhibit a ratio of optical depth of H2O ice to silicate dust (tau3.0/tau9.7) that is lower than that in the Taurus dark cloud. This implies that ULIRGs cannot be described as an ensemble of low-mass star-forming regions and that a significant amount of high-mass star-forming regions contribute to star-forming clouds in local ULIRGs. The results also show that the ratios of optical depth of aliphatic carbon to silicate dust, tau3.4/tau9.7, exhibit diverse values. We investigate two effects that can affect this ratio: the geometric temperature gradient (which increases the ratio) and the intense UV environment (which decreases it). The geometric temperature gradient is typically considered as a sign of active galactic nuclei (AGN). ULIRGs with AGN signs (optical classification, NIR color, and a PAH emission strength of 3.3 um) indeed tend to exhibit a large tau3.4/tau9.7 ratio. However, we find that the presence of buried AGN is not the only cause of the geometric temperature gradient, because the enhancement of the ratio is also evident in pure starburst-like ULIRGs without these AGN signs. Regarding the intense UV environment in star-forming regions, the correlation between the aliphatic carbon ratio and the ratio of the [C II] 158 um line luminosity to the far-infrared luminosity (L[CII]/LFIR), which represents the UV environment in photodissociation regions, implies that the intense UV environment causes the decrease of the aliphatic carbon ratio. AKARI/IRC has a capability of the slit-less spectroscopy in the mid-infrared (5--13 $\mu$m) over a 10 arcmin$\times$10 arcmin area with a spectral resolution of 50, which is suitable for serendipitous surveys. The data reduction is, however, rather complicated by the confusion of nearby sources after dispersing the spectra. To make efficient and reliable data reduction, we first compiled a point-source list from the reference image in each field-of-view and checked the overlaps of the spectra using their relative positions and fluxes. Applying this procedure to 886 mid-infrared slit-less spectroscopic data taken in the cryogenic phase, we obtained 862 mid-infrared spectra from 604 individual non-overlapping sources brighter than 1.5 mJy. We find a variety of objects in the spectroscopic catalogue, ranging from stars to galaxies. We also obtained a by-product catalogue of 9 $\mu$m point sources containing 42,387 objects brighter than 0.3 mJy. We present a new calibration for the second-order light contamination in the near-infrared grism spectroscopy with the Infrared Camera aboard AKARI, specifically for the post-cryogenic phase of the satellite (Phase 3). Following our previous work on the cryogenic phase (Phases 1 and 2), the wavelength and spectral response calibrations were revised. Unlike Phases 1 and 2, during Phase 3, the temperature of the instrument was not stable and gradually increased from 40 to 47 K. To assess the effect of the temperature increase, we divided Phase 3 into three sub-phases and performed the calibrations separately. As in Phases 1 and 2, we confirmed that there was contamination due to the wavelength dependence of the refractive index of the grism material in every sub-phase. The wavelength calibration curves for the three sub-phases coincided with each other and did not show any significant temperature dependence. The response decreased with temperature by ~10% from the beginning to the end of Phase 3. We approximated the temperature dependence of the response as a linear relation and derived a correction factor as a function of temperature. Nearby active galactic nuclei were diagnosed in the X-ray and mid-to-far infrared wavelengths, with Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) and the Japanese infrared observatory AKARI, respectively. Among the X-ray sources listed in the second release of the MAXI all-sky X-ray source catalog, 100 ones are currently identified as a non-blazar-type active galactic nucleus. These include 95 Seyfert galaxies and 5 quasars, and they are composed of 73 type-1 and 27 type-2 objects. The AKARI all-sky survey point source catalog was searched for their mid- and far-infrared counterparts at 9, 18, and 90 $\mu$m. As a result, 69 Seyfert galaxies in the MAXI catalog (48 type-1 and 21 type-2 ones) were found to be detected with AKARI. The X-ray (3-4 keV and 4-10 keV) and infrared luminosities of these objects were investigated, together with their color information. Adopting the canonical photon index, $\Gamma = 1.9$, of the intrinsic X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert galaxies, the X-ray hardness ratio between the 3-4 and 4-10 keV ranges derived with MAXI was roughly converted into the absorption column density. After the X-ray luminosity was corrected for absorption from the estimated column density, the well-known X-ray-to-infrared luminosity correlation was confirmed at least in the Compton-thin regime. In contrast, NGC 1365, only one Compton-thick object in the MAXI catalog, was found to deviate from the correlation toward a significantly lower X-ray luminosity by nearly an order of magnitude. It was verified that the relation between the X-ray hardness below 10 keV and X-ray-to-infrared color acts as an effective tool to pick up Compton-thick objects. The difference in the infrared colors between the type-1 and type-2 Seyfert galaxies and its physical implication on the classification and unification of active galactic nuclei were briefly discussed., Comment: Accepted for PASJ, 10 figures, 3 tables
