Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive highly sensitive tool for diagnosing chondromalacia patellae in the early stages. Many studies have evaluated patellar and trochlear morphology with different radiologic indices. We aimed to assess the discriminative power of tibial, patellar, and femoral indices in MRI for chondromalacia patellae.

Comparative studies, in addition to showing the overlap between culture and literature, can lead to the identification of national literature as much as possible and reveal the position of each work in comparison with its international examples; therefore, such studies can play a significant role in the globalization of literature and identifying the strengths and weaknesses of local works. We aimed to compare the sonographic measurement of median nerve cross-section area (CSA) in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and healthy individuals. The effect of duration of the disease on correlations between paraclinical findings and ALS functional rating scale (ALSFRS) were secondarily aimed to be evaluated. The cross-sectional study was approved by the Ethical Committee of Iran University of Medical Sciences and conducted between January 2017 and December 2018. We evaluated the median nerve surface area by means of sonography in 35 ALS patients and 35 healthy controls. Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitudes during nerve conduction study and ALSFRS were recorded by the same trained specialist. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 18. We did not find a significant difference between CSA in ALS patients and the normal population (P>0.05). Comparing to normal individuals, the mean CMAP decreased significantly in ALS patients (6.6±3.07 mV versus 10.25±2.2 mV, P<0.001). ALSFRS correlated with both CSA of the median nerve at the wrist (P:<0.001, r:0.78) and the CMAP (P:<0.001, r:0.74) that were confirmed by regression models designed to consider the effect of disease duration on these correlations. CSA was not different between ALS patients and the normal population, but CMAP decreased in ALS patients. ALSFRS correlated with both CSA and CMAP of the median nerve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patients are exposed to stressors such as death anxiety despite the effectiveness of hemodialysis in renal failure. The aim of this study was to investigate relationship between spiritual well-being and sensation seeking with death anxiety in hemodialysis patients. The statistical population included 215 hemodialysis patients in 2013 that 138 patients were selected by the convenience sampling method. Data was collected by using spiritual well-being scale, zuckerman's sensation seeking scale and templer death anxiety scale. Data analysis showed that there was statistically significant reverse relationship between sensation seeking and its components with death anxiety as well as between spiritual well-being and its components with death anxiety. The findings indicated significant relationship between sensation seeking and spiritual well-being with death anxiety. Regression analysis showed that predictive variables explain 22% of the variance of death anxiety. Therefore it can be concluded that efforts to promote spiritual well-being and sensation seeking of patients can have important role in reducing their death anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, flexible polyurethane (PU) nanocomposite foams were prepared by in situ polymerization. The effects of incorporation of nanoparticles on the morphological and structural developments and the relation between this development and mechanical properties of the PU foam were demonstrated. The effects of three different contents (low, moderate, and high) of nanoclay and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) loading on foam morphology, structure, kinetics of foaming reactions, and mechanical properties were separately investigated. By adding MWNTs and nanoclay in foams, the foam morphology improved, in which cell density increased and smaller cells were obtained. The mechanical properties of foam especially tensile strength have been increased in the presence of nanoparticles. With enhancing the nanoclay content, the tensile strength of nanocomposite foam has improved but in the case of MWNTs contrary effects were observed. An increase in nanoparticle amount leads to a lower cell density. In general, the incorporation of both nanoparticles (nanoclay and MWNTs) in the foam structure leads to a lower foaming reaction rate that affects mechanical properties of foams. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background: Due to widespread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, identification of its risk factors and clinical characteristics are important. The aim of the present study was to assess Vitamin D levels in individuals with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-19 infection and to report on its potential as a predictive marker., Materials and Methods: All patients, diagnosed with COVID-19 infection from February 16 to March 21, 2020, and referred to Firoozgar Hospital, Tehran, Iran, were enrolled in this study. Vitamin D analysis was undertaken on patient serum samples using a commercial kit (Pars Azmoon Co., Tehran, Iran). SPSS v. 22 was used for statistical analysis., Results: Vitamin D serum concentration was analyzed in a total of 317 patients whose mean age ± standard deviation was 62.05 ± 15 years and with 62.5% being male. A significant association of Vitamin D level and death was observed. Higher levels of serum Vitamin D had protection against death (odds ratio = 0.955 [95% confidence interval = 0.923-0.988], P = 0.008)., Conclusion: As a preliminary study in the Iranian population who suffered COVID-19 disease, we identified that Vitamin D deficiency was associated with a higher death rate and intensive care unit admission., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2021 Journal of Research in Medical Sciences.)
