Abstract

The role of blood-borne feedback mechanisms for regulation of substrate mechanisms such as glucose turnover was investigated during exercise in spinal cord-injured subjects. The subjects' lower limbs were functionally electrically stimulated to carry out cycling to fatigue. Heart rate was measured and compared to the heart rate during voluntary arm cranking in tetraplegics and leg cycling in long-term immobilized subjects.

Abstract

Udgivelsesdato: 2009-Apr OBJECTIVE: Cigarette smoking has been reported as "probable" risk factor for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a poorly understood disease in terms of aetiology. The extensive longitudinal data of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) were used to evaluate age-specific mortality rates from ALS and the role of cigarette smoking on the risk of dying from ALS. METHODS: A total of 517,890 healthy subjects were included, resulting in 4,591,325 person-years. ALS cases were ascertained through death certificates. Cox hazard models were built to investigate the role of smoking on the risk of ALS, using packs/years and smoking duration to study dose-response. RESULTS: A total of 118 subjects died from ALS, resulting in a crude mortality rate of 2.69 per 100,000/year. Current smokers at recruitment had an almost two-fold increased risk of dying from ALS compared to never smokers (HR = 1.89, 95% C.I. 1.14-3.14), while former smokers at the time of enrollment had a 50% increased risk (HR = 1.48, 95% C.I. 0.94-2.32). The number of years spent smoking increased the risk of ALS (p for trend = 0.002). Those who smoked more than 33 years had more than a two-fold increased risk of ALS compared with never smokers (HR = 2.16, 95% C.I. 1.33-3.53). Conversely, the number of years since quitting smoking was associated with a decreased risk of ALS compared with continuing smoking. INTERPRETATION: These results strongly support the hypothesis of a role of cigarette smoking in aetiology of ALS. We hypothesize that this could occur through lipid peroxidation via formaldehyde exposure.

Abstract

Abstract: Production of tools and component for automotive and energy production includes in most application the adjustment in hardness, toughness, fatigue and wear properties. This is done by heat treatment . Depending on material and target course different treatment processes are applied like martensitic hardening, bainitic hardening , nitriding, nitrocarburizing, carburizing and annealing. Up to now these heat treatment processes are done by recipe. Temperature and time of treatment are measured. No information about the change in material microstructure is available during treatment. So scattering results are the consequence and high security time factors have to be included to get the necessary process capability. To overcome this difficulty, eddy current sensors, measuring and analysis systems have been developed and are implemented in the hot furnace to measure in-situ the progress of the developing material microstructure during heat treatment of the components. Abstract

Degradable magnesium alloys are new materials for implants used in orthopedic and trauma surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of degradable magnesium alloys on the function of dendritic cells (DC) as these cells represent the major antigen presenting cells of the body. MgP (pure magnesium), MgCa 0.6 (0.6% calcium), MgCa 0.8 (0.8% calcium), MgCa 1.0 (1% calcium), and MgCa 1.2 (1.2% calcium) alloys were degraded in cell culture medium. In parallel, murine bone marrow-derived DC were incubated with increasing concentrations (0.1—10 mmol/L) of magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, respectively. Incubation of DC with degradation media over 6 days had no influence on cell viability and only marginal influence on DC migration. Also, the production of TNFα and expression of CD86 was not enhanced by incubation with degraded magnesium alloys. The mixed leukocyte reaction revealed that there was also no increase of the T-cell proliferation in comparison to untreated controls. However, there was a trend toward macrophage development at the expense of DC expansion and an enhanced DC migration was induced by incubation with higher magnesium concentrations. 45. Basic principles of reaching triboactive coatings by mixing of nanosized feedstock powders in the suspension plasma spraying process

Abstract

In recent years, suspension plasma spaying SPS has been investigated to provide functional coatings with determined abilities, which could not be reached by conventional thermal spray processes so far. In this paper, the possibilities are discussed to achieve oxide ceramic coatings based on titania by SPS, which show a reduction of their coefficient of friction under dry sliding conditions. Besides the possibility of mixing different feedstock suspensions in the process, the achievable low thickness and homogenous microstructure of suspensionsprayed coatings may allow use of the coatings in applications, where high demands on adhesion, cohesion and near net shape are made.In den vergangenen Jahren wurde das SuspensionsPlasmaspritzen SPS hinsichtlich seiner Eignung untersucht, Schichtsysteme mit definierten funktionalen Eigenschaften zu erzielen, die bisher mit konventionellen thermischen Spritzverfahren nicht realisiert werden konnten. In diesem Beitrag werden Möglichkeiten diskutiert, um mittels SPS oxidkeramische Schichtsysteme auf Basis von Titandioxid zu erhalten, die unter trockener Gleitreibung eine signifikante Minderung des Reibungskoeffizienten aufweisen. Neben der Option der Durchmischung verschiedener Werkstoffsuspensionen im Prozess bietet das Verfahren die Möglichkeit, dünne Schichten mit einem sehr homogenen Gefüge einzustellen. Diese Eigenschaften sollen einen Einsatz unter Bedingungen erlauben, die hohe Anforderungen an die Adhäsion, die Kohäsion und die Endkonturnähe der Schichtsysteme stellen.
