Abstract

Soybean is an important food crop, and insect integrated pest management (IPM) is critical to the sustainability of this production system. In recent years, the introduction into the United States of the kudzu bug currently identified as Megacopta cribraria (F.), poses a threat to soybean production. The kudzu bug was first discovered in the state of Georgia, U.S. in 2009 and since then has spread to most of the southeastern states. Because it was not found in the North American subcontinent before this time, much of our knowledge of this insect comes from research done in its native habitat. However, since the U.S. introduction, studies have been undertaken to improve our understanding of the kudzu bug basic biology, microbiome, migration patterns, host selection and management in its expanding new range. Researchers are not only looking at developing IPM strategies for the kudzu bug in soybean, but also at its unique relationship with symbiotic bacteria. Adult females deposit bacterial packets with their eggs, and the neonates feed on these packets to acquire the bacteria, Candidatus Ishikawaella capsulata. The kudzu bug should be an informative model to study the co-evolution of insect function and behavior with that of a single bacteria species. We review kudzu bug trapping and survey methods, the development of bioassays for insecticide susceptibility, insecticide efficacy, host preferences, impact of the pest on urban environments, population expansion, and the occurrence of natural enemies. The identity of the kudzu bug in the U.S. is not clear. We propose that the kudzu bug currently accepted as M. cribraria in the U.S. is actually Megacopta punctatissima, with more work needed to confirm this hypothesis. Published version

Abstract

Transgenic cotton varieties that express Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins have been adapted readily because they reduce the need of insecticide application, while their environmental impacts are minimal. Recently, pyramided cotton varieties that express two different Bt toxins have been introduced; these varieties may reduce the risk of resistance development in lepidopteran pests populations. However, resistance monitoring in Bt cotton fields are necessary and mandated. Based on a previously described feeding disruption test (FDT) from our laboratory, the objective of this project was to develop a bioassay that uses Bt toxin obtained directly from Bollgard II plant material. The technology under development should be applicable to other pyramided and single gene commercial plants. The assay hardware is a novel 16 well plastic plate with each well of the plate containing a hydrateable, artificial diet containing leaf extract from Bollgard II. Dose-response studies were conducted using a laboratory susceptible strain of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens, where different concentrations of leaf extract were used to hydrate a standard meal pad in each well. From these studies, a diagnostic dose was determined of 1.3 µg cotton / meal pad, which essentially stopped the production of fecal pellets by neonates of the budworm after a 24 h incubation. This diagnostic dose was further evaluated using three different populations of H. virescens assayed directly from the field from central North Carolina, USA. The diagnostic dose was also evaluated with the Bt resistant, laboratory reared H. virescens strains, YHD2 and CxC. The bioassay developed is a practical, reliable monitoring tool that can be used to monitor Bt susceptibility as part of an integrated resistance program in pyramided cotton fields. 50. EVALUATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STINK BUG PRESSURE VS. YIELD UNDER A REGRESSIVE SPRAY TREATMENT.

Abstract

In 2006 and 2007, a series of seven "regressive spray" tests were conducted across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Two tests were conducted in NC in 2006 and 2007, two tests in GA in 2007, and one test in SC in 2007. The purpose of these test were to evaluate the relationship between stink bug populations and yield, and to validate findings of a "progressive spray" treatment environment. All tests were conducted on Bollgard II cotton verities. Test sites consisted of plots six to eight rows wide by 50 to 100 feet long with four replicates. All spray treatments began at anthesis, except an untreated check plot, with a high rate of dicrotophos (Bidrin 8E @ 0.5 ai/acre) plus a pyrethroid. Each week, an additional plot was removed from the spray schedule. This continued until the seventh week and final single plot spray. Just prior to boll opening, 25 random bolls from three sites were collected to estimate the amount of stink bug feeding damage. Following defoliation of the cotton, plots were mechanically harvested and yield data recorded. The results show no yield differences among treatments. High variation in yield was observed among similarly treated replicates at each site. These results do not follow those results found under a "progressive spray" environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
