Abstract

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is used for the management of tephritid fruit fly pests. The South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae), is one potential pest to be targeted by means of SIT. The success of SIT depends, to a large extent, on the sexual performance of sterile males. Various approaches have been evaluated with the aim of improving their sexual performance. These include the exposure to plant‐derived compounds and/or the provision of protein sources in the adults' diet capable of stimulating male mating success. The present study aimed to determine whether exposure to volatiles of Citrus limon (L.) Burm. F. (Rutaceae) essential oil and limonene confers a mating advantage to A. fraterculus laboratory males fed two distinct dietary regimes when competing with wild males for wild females under field cage conditions. Dietary regimes were, one, with non‐hydrolysed brewer's yeast and sugar (1:3 ratio), and the other with brewer's yeast hydrolysate enzymatic and sugar (1:12 ratio). The effect was evaluated in four variables associated with mating success: number of copulas obtained, latency to mate, copula duration, and copula location. Exposure to volatiles did not affect the number of matings achieved, irrespective of the diet given to the males. When laboratory males were fed with brewer's yeast hydrolysate, the effect of volatile exposure was shown in latency to mate, copula duration, and copula location. When the laboratory males were fed with non‐hydrolysed brewer's yeast, the effect of volatile exposure was shown only in copula duration. Laboratory males fed brewer's yeast hydrolysate achieved the same number of matings as wild males, whereas laboratory males fed non‐hydrolysed brewer's yeast had lower performance. Abstract

Introduction: The menopause, or the cessation of menstruation, is a stage of the life cycle which will occur in all women. Managing perimenopausal and postmenopausal health is a key issue for all areas of healthcare, not just gynecology. Aim: To provide recommendations for the curriculum of education programs for healthcare professionals worldwide, so that all can receive high quality training on menopause. Materials and methods: Literature review and consensus of expert opinion. Summary recommendations: Training programs for healthcare professionals worldwide should include menopause and postmenopausal health in their curriculum. It should include assessment, diagnosis and evidence-based management strategies. © 2021

Das heutige Wissen über den Aufbau von Materie und die Entwicklung des Universums kurz nach dem Urknall beruht auf Erkenntnissen, die mit Hilfe von Teilchenbeschleunigern und -detektoren gewonnen wurden. Das vorliegende Unterrichtsmaterial bietet Ihnen und Ihren Schülern einen Einblick in die Forschungsmethoden der experimentellen Teilchenphysik. In den KAPITELN 1 und 2 werden zunächst einige Hintergrundinformationen für Lehrkräfte gegeben. Dazu gehören Anknüpfungspunkte an den Lehrplan, benötigte Vorkenntnisse der Schüler, Lernziele sowie methodische und fachliche Hinweise. KAPITEL 3 befasst sich mit den Zielen der aktuellen experimentellen Teilchenphysik-Forschung, wie sie am LHC des CERN in Genf betrieben wird. In zwei getrennten Abschnitten werden Teilchenbeschleuniger und Teilchendetektoren eingeführt. Jeder Abschnitt endet mit Fragen zur Selbstkontrolle. Daran schließt sich jeweils ein Kapitel mit Aufgaben an.

22. Root exudation of contrasting drought-stressed pearl millet genotypes conveys varying biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) activity

Abstract

Roots secrete a vast array of low molecular weight compounds into the soil broadly referred to as root exudates. It is a key mechanism by which plants and soil microbes interact in the rhizosphere. The effect of drought stress on the exudation process and composition is rarely studied, especially in cereal crops. This study focuses on comparative metabolic profiling of the exudates from sensitive and tolerant genotypes of pearl millet after a period of drought stress. We employed a combined platform of gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry to cover both primary and secondary metabolites. The results obtained demonstrate that both genotype and drought stress have a significant impact on the concentration and composition of root exudates. The complexity and function of these differential root exudates are discussed. To reveal the potential effect of root exudates on the soil microbial community after a period of drought stress, we also tested for biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) activity. The analysis revealed a genotype-dependent enhancement of BNI activity after a defined period of drought stress. In parallel, we observed a genotype-specific relation of elongated root growth and root exudation under drought stress. These data suggest that the drought stress-dependent change in root exudation can manipulate the microbial soil communities to adapt and survive under harsh conditions.

Abstract

Presently, pearl millet and wheat are belonging to highly important cereal crops. Pearl millet, however, is an under-utilized crop, despite its superior resilience to drought and heat stress in contrast to wheat. To investigate this in more detail, we performed comparative physiological screening and large scale proteomics of drought stress responses in drought-tolerant and susceptible genotypes of pearl millet and wheat. These chosen genotypes are widely used in breeding and farming practices. The physiological responses demonstrated large differences in the regulation of root morphology and photosynthetic machinery, revealing a stay-green phenotype in pearl millet. Subsequent tissue-specific proteome analysis of leaves, roots and seeds led to the identification of 12,558 proteins in pearl millet and wheat under well-watered and stress conditions. To allow for this comparative proteome analysis and to provide a platform for future functional proteomics studies we performed a systematic phylogenetic analysis of all orthologues in pearl millet, wheat, foxtail millet, sorghum, barley, brachypodium, rice, maize, Arabidopsis, and soybean. In summary, we define (i) a stay-green proteome signature in the drought-tolerant pearl millet phenotype and (ii) differential senescence proteome signatures in contrasting wheat phenotypes not capable of coping with similar drought stress. These different responses have a significant effect on yield and grain filling processes reflected by the harvest index. Proteome signatures related to root morphology and seed yield demonstrated the unexpected intra- and interspecies-specific biochemical plasticity for stress adaptation for both pearl millet and wheat genotypes. These quantitative reference data provide tissue- and phenotype-specific marker proteins of stress defense mechanisms which are not predictable from the genome sequence itself and have potential value for marker-assisted breeding beyond genome assisted breeding.

41. Addressing the Crisis of the Modern Corporation: The Duty of Societal Responsibility of the Board

Abstract

A core element of most analyses of how capitalism is failing us is the shareholder primacy doctrine that has taken hold of corporate law and corporate governance. The doctrine has been developed in theory (among others through the agency theory) and practice (e.g. executive remuneration and takeover bids) resulting in the corporation becoming amoral. Any moral responsibility for the effects of one’s behaviour on others has to come from the outside, as an externality. Within the corporation only responsibility to create value for shareholders exists. It is striking to see how this corporate reality created by ourselves seems to have become a reality that is over and beyond us, as a matter-of-fact that cannot be contested, it is simply how it is. Insights of Weber and Fromm show how we have succumbed to self-made formal rationalization and alienation so that we no longer have any responsibility for this corporate reality. This human failure can only be conquered by turning to who we are in the corporate context. Proposals have been made to change this corporate reality, by reducing shareholders’ rights, by installing a broader corporate purpose and by involving other stakeholders in the governance of the corporation. In each of these approaches the role of the board is crucial. Without a board, without the people who make up the board, who commit the corporation to being a responsible citizen in society, nothing much will change. In this paper I argue that in order to generate such a commitment corporate law should introduce a duty of societal responsibility of the board. This involves being responsible for the impact the corporation has on human, social and natural capital, besides financial capital. Corporate law and corporate governance arrangements should elaborate on this duty, by applying principles of fair decision-making and by transforming board decision-making, board composition, organizational governance, executive remuneration and transparency. Such elaborations anchored in the duty of societal responsibility will bring to life a veritable and human commitment from within the corporation to conduct itself as a responsible corporate citizen in society.
