In recent years, superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities have been considered as candidates for qubits in quantum computing, showing a significantly longer decoherence time compared to many other realizations. Originally, SRF cavities are the workhorse of modern particle accelerators and ongoing R&D pursuits to improve their properties, to increase the accelerating field and reduce the surface resistance in order to increase the energy reach and duty cycle of accelerators. Although few experimental milestones have been realized, the underlying mechanisms of the still observed losses have not been fully understood. In this contribution we are going to show that a recently reported temperature treatment of Nb SRF cavities in the temperature range of 573-673 K, which reduces the residual surface resistance to unprecedented values, is linked to a reorganization of the niobium oxide and near-surface vacancy structure and that this reorganization can explain the observed improved performance in both applications, quantum computing and SRF cavities.

Liquid phase exfoliation is a commonly used method to produce 2D nanosheets from a range of layered crystals. However, such nanosheets display broad size and thickness distributions and correlations between area and thickness, issues that limit nanosheet application potential. To understand the factors controlling the exfoliation process, we have liquid-exfoliated 11 different layered materials, size-selecting each into fractions before using AFM to measure the nanosheet length, width, and thickness distributions for each fraction. The resultant data show a clear power-law scaling of nanosheet area with thickness for each material. We have developed a simple nonequilibrium thermodynamics-based model predicting that the power-law prefactor is proportional to both the ratios of in-plane-tearing/out-of-plane-peeling energies and in-plane/out-of-plane moduli. By comparing the experimental data with the modulus ratio calculated from first-principles, we find close agreement between experiment and theory. This supports our hypothesis that energy equipartition holds between nanosheet tearing and peeling during sonication-assisted exfoliation.

Contains fulltext : 218312.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing joint estimates of the work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO Joint Estimates). For this, systematic reviews of studies estimating the prevalence of exposure to selected occupational risk factors will be conducted to provide input data for estimations of the number of exposed workers. A critical part of systematic review methods is to assess risk of bias (RoB) of individual studies. In this article, we present and describe the development of such a tool, called the Risk of Bias in Studies estimating Prevalence of Exposure to Occupational risk factors (RoB-SPEO) tool; report results from RoB-SPEO's pilot testing; note RoB-SPEO's limitations; and suggest how the tool might be tested and developed further. METHODS: Selected existing RoB tools used in environmental and occupational health systematic reviews were reviewed and analysed. From existing tools, we identified domains for the new tool and, if necessary, added new domains. For each domain, we then identified and integrated components from the existing tools (i.e. instructions, domains, guiding questions, considerations, ratings and rating criteria), and, if necessary, we developed new components. Finally, we elicited feedback from other systematic review methodologists and exposure scientists and agreed upon RoB-SPEO. Nine experts pilot tested RoB-SPEO, and we calculated a raw measure of inter-rater agreement (Pi) for each of its domain, rating Pi<0.4 as poor, 0.4/=0.8 as substantial and Pi>0.80 as almost perfect agreement. RESULTS: Our review found no standard tool for assessing RoB in prevalence studies of exposure to occupational risk factors. We identified six existing tools for environmental and occupational health systematic reviews and found that their components for assessing RoB differ considerably. Wind farms and their associated transmission infrastructure can have negative impact on biodiversity. Offshore wind farms, for example, can pose threats to animals like harbour porpoises and migrating birds and onshore wind farms and transmission grids may harm birds and bats. In this article we analyse how European Union species protection law is transposed and applied to decision-making on wind energy projects in five member states, namely Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United Kingdom. The analysis aims to understand the differences in the interpretation and application of national species protection law, point out deficiencies, and make recommendations, partly based on learning from best practices. Though transposition in national law is almost identical, implementation practice in these states varies substantially. The question is raised whether the legal regime, as currently applied, can be improved to serve the aims of a considerable increase ot renewable energy sources whilst simultaneously protecting biodiversity.

Small non-coding RNAs play a key role in many physiological and pathological processes. Since 2004, miRNA sequences have been catalogued in miRBase, which is currently in its 21st version. We investigated sequence and structural features of miRNAs annotated in the miRBase and compared them between different versions of this reference database. We have identified that the two most recent releases (v20 and v21) are influenced by next-generation sequencing based miRNA predictions and show significant deviation from miRNAs discovered prior to the high-throughput profiling period. From the analysis of miRBase, we derived a set of key characteristics to predict new miRNAs and applied the implemented algorithm to evaluate novel blood-borne miRNA candidates. We carried out 705 individual whole miRNA sequencings of blood cells and collected a total of 9.7 billion reads. Using miRDeep2 we initially predicted 1452 potentially novel miRNAs. After excluding false positives, 518 candidates remained. These novel candidates were ranked according to their distance to the features in the early miRBase versions allowing for an easier selection of a subset of putative miRNAs for validation. Selected candidates were successfully validated by qRT-PCR and northern blotting.
