Abstract

Graphic processing units (GPUs) have become a basic accelerator both in high-performance nodes and low-power system-on-chip (SoC). They provide massive data parallelism and very high performance per watt. However, their reliability in harsh environments is an important issue to take into account, especially for safety-critical applications. In this article, we evaluate the influence of the parallelization strategy on the reliability of lower–upper (LU) decomposition on a GPU-accelerated SoC under proton irradiation. Specifically, we compare a memory bound and a compute bound implementation of the decomposition on a K20A GPU embedded on a Tegra K1 (TK1) SoC. We leverage the GPU and CPU clock frequencies both to highlight the radiation sensitivity of the GPU where we are running the benchmark and also to apply both algorithms to solve problems with the same size when exposed to the same radiation dose. Results show that more intensive use of the resources of the GPU increases the cross section. We also observed that most of the radiation-induced errors hang the operating system and even the rebooting process. Finally, we present a preliminary study of the error propagation of the LU decomposition algorithms.

Abstract

We investigate model reduction of large-scale linear time-invariant systems in generalized state-space form. We consider sparse state matrix pencils, including pencils with banded structure. The balancing-based methods employed here are composed of well-known linear algebra operations and have been recently shown to be applicable to large models by exploiting the structure of the matrices defining the dynamics of the system. In this paper we propose a modification of the LR-ADI iteration to solve large-scale generalized Lyapunov equations together with a practical convergence criterion, and several other implementation refinements. Using kernels from several serial and parallel linear algebra libraries, we have developed a parallel package for model reduction, SpaRed, extending the applicability of balanced truncation to sparse systems with up to $O(10^5)$ states. Experiments on an SMP parallel architecture consisting of Intel Itanium 2 processors illustrate the numerical performance of this approach and the potential of the parallel algorithms for model reduction of large-scale sparse systems.

Abstract

We address the solution of large-scale eigenvalue problems that appear in the motion simulation of complex macromolecules on multithreaded platforms, consisting of multicore processors and possibly a graphics processor (graphics processing unit). In particular, we compare specialized implementations of several high-performance eigensolvers that, by relying on disk storage and out-of-core techniques, can in principle tackle the large memory requirements of these biological problems, which in general do not fit into the main memory of current desktop machines. All these out-of-core eigensolvers, except for one, are composed of compute-bound (i.e., arithmetically intensive) operations, which we accelerate by exploiting the performance of current multicore processors and, in some cases, by additionally off-loading certain parts of the computation to a graphics processing unit accelerator. One of the eigensolvers is a memory-bound algorithm, which strongly constrains its performance when the data is on disk. However, this method exhibits a much lower arithmetic cost compared with its compute-bound alternatives for this particular application. Experimental results on a desktop platform, representative of current server technology, illustrate the potential of these methods to address the simulation of biological activity. llc is a language based on C where parallelism is expressed using compiler directives. The llc compiler produces MPI code which can be ported to both shared and distributed memory systems. In this work we focus our attention in the llc implementation of the Workqueuing Model. This model is an extension of the OpenMP standard that allows an elegant implementation of irregular parallelism. Abstract

In this paper, we parallelize a new algorithm for solving non-symmetric Toeplitz linear systems. This algorithm embeds the Toeplitz matrix in a larger structured matrix, then transforms it into an embedded Cauchy-like matrix by means of trigonometric modifications. Finally, the algorithm applies a modified QR transformation to triangularize the augmented matrix. The algorithm combines e.ciency and stability. It has been implemented using standard tools and libraries, thereby producing a portable code. An extensive experimental analysis has been performed on a cluster of personal computers. Experimental results show that we can obtain efficiencies that are similar to other fast parallel algorithms, while obtaining more accurate results with only one iterative refinement step in the solution. Abstract

llc is a language designed to extend OpenMP to distributed memory systems. Work in progress on the implementation of a compiler that translates llc code and targets distributed memory platforms is presented. Our approach generates code for communications directly on top of MPI. We present computational results for two different benchmark applications on a PC-cluster platform. The results reflect similar performances for the llc compiled version and an ad-hoc MPI implementation, even for applications with fine-grain parallelism.
