Abstract

Berlin is increasingly emerging as a hub of Arab intellectual life in Europe. In this first study of Arab culture to zoom in on the thriving metropolis, the contributors shed light on the dynamics of transformation with Arabs as agents, subjects, and objects of change in the spheres of politics, society and history, gender, demographics and migration, media and culture, and education and research. The kaleidoscopic character of the collection, embracing academic articles, essays, interviews and photos, reflects critical encounters in Berlin. It brings together authors from inter- and multidisciplinary fields and backgrounds and invites the readers into a much-needed conversation on contemporary transformations.

13. How Higher Education Faculty in Egypt Perceive the Effects of COVID-19 on Teaching Journalism and Mass Communication: Perspectives from the Global South

Abstract

The article critically examines how faculty in journalism and mass communication perceive the COVID-19 impact on higher education in Egypt. Using an online survey (N = 135) and 14 in-depth interviews in spring-summer 2020, the article contextualizes the faculty's ambivalent perceptions within the diffusion of innovation theory. The article bridges a gap in the existing literature by localizing this disrupted delivery in relation to the broader challenges and opportunities for diffusion of digital innovations in higher education. The results nuance the debate on digital education beyond a techno-determinist focus on digital skills to encompass societal awareness of regional and culture-specific digital inequalities.

Abstract

Introduction: Leadership style and employee behavior has long been a topic of interest in organizational research. Objectives: To explore levels of despotic leadership, supervisor–employee value congruence, and organizational deviance among the studied nurses. Furthermore, to explore the connection between the three variables. Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional quantitative design. The researchers used three tools as follows: the despotic leadership survey, an organizational deviance scale, and a perceived supervisor–employee value congruence scale. The first of April 2023 to the first of July 2023 were the 3 months that were used to collect the data from 250 nurses. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman's correlation, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Mann–Whitney U test. Results: Nurses perceived a moderate level of despotic leadership as mean ± SD, 16.80 ± 3.01, also a moderate level for organizational deviance (30.63 ± 4.65). The studied nurses perceived a moderate level of supervisor–employee value congruence (10.93 ± 1.32) Furthermore, there is a solid positive significant relationship between despotic leadership and organizational deviance where p =.001. There is a negative significant relationship between despotic leadership and supervisor–employee value congruence where p =.001. Also, there is a negative significant relationship between organizational deviance and supervisor–employee value congruence where p =.001. Conclusion: Nurse managers need to retain leaders to inspire subordinates' uncluttered communication networks, stirring nurses' partaking in nursing committees' assemblies, and decision-making. Hospital administrators ought to focus more on the role that value congruence plays as a buffer for subordinates who exhibit organizational deviance and high levels of mistrust. Strategies should be employed to create and maintain value congruence and reinforce desired nondeviant behaviors to foster a positive work environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

One of journalism’s key societal functions is to serve the public. In recent years, however, scholarship has increasingly interrogated this ideological claim, exposing journalism as an unequal space, guided by entrenched traditional norms and practices that stifle journalism’s growth, and where journalists and audiences marginalized by various domains of power feel excluded. While these studies have cracked open crucial debates about how journalism is done, by whom and for whom, they have often offered a disassembled view by essentializing gender, race or class as single domains of power. This chapter advances the argument that standpoint epistemology and intersectionality provide us with a critical framework and analytical tools to interrogate journalism’s inequalities with more complexity, and at various levels of influence, including journalists’ and audiences’ experiences of doing and consuming journalism, as well as the organizational, structural and normative belief systems that shape it. The chapter concludes by pointing to several avenues of research and ways of engaging with these perspectives to advance critical journalism studies.

28. The impact of educational sessions on anxiety levels among women undergoing caesarean section: a quasi-experimental study

Abstract

Although the Caesarean section (CS) is considered a harmless surgery, it has various complications. Women scheduled for elective CSs often have high levels of anxiety due to a lack of knowledge. The aim of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to determine the relationship between preoperative educational sessions and anxiety levels among women undergoing CSs. The study was conducted at the antenatal unit in the King Faisal Medical Complex (KFMC) in Taif, Saudi Arabia, using a structured interview questionnaire, the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and satisfaction interviews. A total of 50 pregnant women participated in this study, who were divided into two groups: 25 participants in the intervention group and 25 in the control group. Most participants (92%) in the intervention group had low anxiety levels following educational sessions, and 96% of the participants were very satisfied with the preoperative information they had been given. Women in the control group (again, 92%) had high anxiety levels, and there was a significant difference in the anxiety levels of the intervention and control groups (p ≤ 0.5) after the educational sessions. Providing proper preoperative education about CSs can reduce preoperative anxiety, improve patient outcomes, and enhance patients’ involvement in their care and decision-making.

Abstract

Background: Postpartum depression is a significant mental health concern affecting many women globally, with potential adverse effects on both maternal and infant well-being. Social support and self-esteem are crucial factors influencing postpartum depression, yet their relationships in the context of Saudi Arabia remain underexplored. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationships between social support, self-esteem, and postpartum depression among women who have recently given birth in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, with convenience sampling targeting women who gave birth within the past six months. Data were collected between January and February 2023 via an online self-administered questionnaire, which included sociodemographic information and three standardized scales: The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSS), and The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. Results: The mean score for postpartum depression was 14.81, with a standard deviation of 6.30, indicating a moderate level of depression symptoms. Significant negative correlations were found between social support and postpartum depression (r = -0.54, p = 0.001) and between self-esteem and postpartum depression (r = -0.63, p = 0.001). A positive correlation was observed between social support and self-esteem (r = 0.53, p = 0.001), highlighting the protective roles of these factors. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of improving social support and self-esteem to reduce postpartum depression risk among new mothers. Midwives and healthcare providers should focus on creating supportive environments and strategies that foster both social support and self-esteem. Such approaches will not only improve maternal mental health outcomes but also contribute to a more sustainable and holistic healthcare system by addressing the root factors influencing postpartum well-being. Abstract

Der Beitrag präsentiert und diskutiert die Ergebnisse einer umfassenden Befragung und mehrerer Dokumentenanalysen zu Personal-und Forschungsstrukturen sowie Lehrprogrammen in der deutschen Kommunikationswissenschaft im Hinblick auf deren „tiefe Internationalisierung“ bzw. kosmopolitische Ausrichtung. Darunter verstehen wir eine umfassende Anerkennung und Einbindung globaler Vielfalt in die Wissensproduktion und messen dies entlang der Inhalts-und Raumdimension des Forschungs-und Lehroutputs der Professuren und der mit ihnen verbundenen Stellenstrukturen. Die Befunde zeigen, dass die deutsche Kommunikationswissenschaft einen großen Nachholbedarf hat, was eine kosmopolitische Wissensproduktion angeht. Vor dem Hintergrund der Relevanz globaler Werte, globalen Wissens und Global Governance werden aber auch Potentiale aufgezeigt sowie hochschulpolitische Maßnahmen diskutiert, die eine inhaltliche Internationalisierung der deutschen Kommunikationswissenschaft vorantreiben können., This paper presents and discusses the results of a comprehensive survey and several document analyses on personnel and research structures as well as teaching programs in German communication studies regarding their “deep internationalization” or cosmopolitan orientation. By this, we mean a comprehensive recognition and integration of global diversity into knowledge production. We measure this through the content and spatial dimension of the research and teaching output of professors, as well as the teaching and research staff linked tothem. The findings show that German communication studies is lagging a truly cosmopolitan knowledge production.
