The case presented illustrates a very rare chronic granulomatous disease called the Madura foot or also called mycetoma. It is a chronic granulomatous disease, caused by a contained infection that penetrates the subcutaneous tissues and spreads to the nearby bone by damaging the affected area's vascularization. Early diagnosis is greatly aided by clinical history and imaging, especially if the “dot-in-circle” sign—a pathognomonic marker of mycetoma—is seen on the MRI. Compared to ordinary radiographs, computed tomography offers a more accurate study of changes in the bone. In order to apply the appropriate course of treatment, it is critical to identify the causal species, which can be caused by either a true fungus (eumycetoma) or a bacterium Actinomyces (Actinomycetoma). Treatment can be extremely challenging and can even result in amputation, particularly if the diagnosis is delayed.

Exostosis, or osteochondroma, represents the most prevalent primary benign bone tumor, often viewed as a developmental anomaly rather than a true neoplasm. This article presents 2 cases illustrating complications associated with tibial osteochondroma. The first case involves a 25-year-old patient with recurrent medial knee pain attributed to pes anserine bursitis secondary to tibial osteochondroma, managed successfully with surgical excision. The second case features a 15-year-old with similar symptoms and unsuccessful conservative management, highlighting the diagnostic challenges and therapeutic options for this condition. Discussion encompasses the clinical presentation, diagnostic modalities including MRI and ultrasound, and management strategies such as conservative measures, corticosteroid injections, and surgical excision. Recognizing and promptly managing complications like pes anserine bursitis in tibial osteochondroma is crucial to prevent chronic pain and functional impairment, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach involving orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, and physical therapists.

The prevalence of intracranial aneurysms (IA) is higher in patients with stenosis of the internal carotid artery (ICA), the intracavernous internal carotid aneurysm is an intracranial aneurysm causing major functional and vital complications. We report the case of a 26-year-old man who consulted for a reduction in visual acuity, converging strabismus and ptosis of the right eye evolving for 7 months before his consultation, the various neuro-radiological examinations made it possible to identify diagnose a giant aneurysm of the right intracavernous internal carotid artery associated with severe stenosis of the contralateral internal carotid artery, hence the performance of a therapeutic arteriography consisting of an occlusion of this aneurysm. In summary, we describe successful management of a giant aneurysm of the intracavernous portion of a single functional internal carotid artery, while preserving optimal cerebral vascularization.

Most of the pulmonary endobronchial lesions are malignant in origin. In rare instances, benign lesions such as endobronchial hamartoma may be the cause of the endobronchial tree obstruction. We present the case of a 57-year-old male patient from North Africa who presents with a history of a 5-month cough. Imaging, particulary CT scan, showed a mass on the right intermediate bronchus whose radiological characteristics are consistent with hamartoma. A biopsy of the mass obtained via bronchoscopy revealed chronic inflammation with no evidence for malignancy. The patient was treated surgically, and anatomopathology confirmed the diagnosis of hamartoma.

Ovarian dysgerminoma is a rare germ cell tumor accounting for 1%-2% of all malignant ovarian tumors and is generally associated with a good prognosis. The condition is more frequent in young women and can arise in dysgenetic gonads that contain gonadoblastomas. Imaging findings, particularly MRI, have a prominent role in the early and correct identification of ovarian dysgerminoma, the most common ovarian malignant germ cell tumor. On CT and MR images, ovarian dysgerminoma often appears as a large, solid mass. The edematous condition of characteristic fibrovascular septa can be well displayed by imaging, which can guide the radiologists to make an accurate diagnosis. This article describes 2 cases of patients with ovarian dysgerminoma who presented with pelvic pain. Imaging showed a right ovarian mass that was surgically and histologically confirmed.

Abstract The wave equation revealing the wave propagation in chiral phononic crystals, established through force equilibrium law, conceals the underlying physical information, such as the essence of the motion coupling and the inertial amplification effect. This has led to a controversy over the bandgap mechanism. In this article, we theoretically unveil the reason for this controversy, and put forward an alternative approach from wave behavior to formulate the wave equation, offering an alternative pathway to articulate the bandgap physics directly. Based on the physics revealed by our theory method, we identify the obstacles in coupled acoustic and optic branches to widen and lower the bandgap. Then we introduce an approach based on spherical hinges to decrease the barriers, for customizing the bandgap frequency and width. Finally, we validate our proposal through numerical simulation and experimental demonstration.

Purpose: To propose an intelligent, non-invasive, highly precise, and rapid method to predict the mutation status of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) to accelerate treatment with Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor (TKI) for patients with untreated adenocarcinoma Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. Materials and methods: Real-world data from 521 patients with adenocarcinoma NSCLC who performed a CT scan and underwent surgery or pathological biopsy to determine EGFR gene mutation between January 2021 and July 2022, is collected. Solutions to the problems that prevent the model from achieving very high precision, namely: human errors made during the annotation of the database and the low precision of the output decision of the model, are proposed. Thus, among the 521 analyzed cases, only 40 were selected as patients with EGFR gene mutation and 98 cases with wild-type EGFR. Results: The proposed model is trained, validated, and tested on 12,040 2D images extracted from the 138 CT scans images where patients were randomly partitioned into training (80 %) and test (20 %) sets. The performance obtained for EGFR gene mutation prediction was 95.22 % for accuracy, 960.2 for F1_score, 95.89 % for precision, 96.92 % for sensitivity, 94.01 % for Cohen kappa, and 98 % for AUC. Conclusion: An EGFR gene mutation status prediction method, with high-performance thanks to an intelligent prediction model entrained by highly accurate annotated data is proposed. The outcome of this project will facilitate rapid decision-making when applying a TKI as an initial treatment.

Thermal analysis in nanolubricants is a topic of interest. The nanolubricants are uniform mixture of nanoparticles and oil. These fluids extensively use for thermal applications and friction reduction. Hence, the key objectives of this work to analyze the dynamics of ZnO-SAE50 through a curved surface. The traditional problem modified using novel effects of non-uniform thermal source, variable thermal conductivity, non-linear thermal radiations and Newtonian heating in the presence of convective condition. Further, enhanced properties of ZnO-SAE50 used to achieve the desired results. The physical results for the problem obtained through numerical approach (RK scheme coupled with shooting method). It is examined that the velocity enhances by increasing the curvature of the surface (K=5.0,10.0,15.0,20.0) while stronger Hartmann effects (M=0.1,0.5,0.9,1.3) and concentration of ZnO reduce the motion over the surface. Complete cerebellar agenesis is an extremely rare condition characterized by the complete absence of cerebellar tissue. Only a small number of cases have been reported, with varying motor and cognitive deficits. We describe a case of an 11-month-old baby with developmental delay, whose CT scan evaluation showed the complete absence of the cerebellum with no other associated cerebral malformation.

Prolapsed uterine tumors within the cervix or vagina, are attached to the uterine cavity by a soft tissue stalk. Malignant tumors and leiomyoma are the first diagnostic considerations for a prolapsed uterine mass with a visible stalk at MRI. This article describes 4 cases of patients who presented with large, necrotic prolapsed uterine tumors that were surgically confirmed and were diagnosed prospectively on the basis of MRI findings. Imaging, particularly MRI, plays a crucial role in the management of patients with prolapsed pedunculated uterine tumors, especially for pre-operative localization and surgical treatment. The 4 patients underwent a total hysterectomy with a complete resection of the mass. The histopathological report confirmed in the first case the diagnosis of a uterine leiomyoma with aseptic necrobiosis, in the second and third cases a sarcoma, and in the fourth case a serous adenocarcinoma.

Rickettsiosis is a widespread infection throughout the world and in Africa, it covers a wide range of infectious diseases caused by Rickettsia species. Rickettsial infections, with the exception of Q fever, typically present with fever, rash, and vasculitis. The central nervous system (CNS) can be affected by all rickettsial diseases and is an important target for several of them.Clinical manifestations are suggestive of rickettsial infection, but serology and skin biopsy provide confirmation.Although the presence of abnormal neuroimaging is rare, its presence is associated with a worse clinical prognosis. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans mainly show signs of vasculitis, which may be reversible if appropriate treatment is initiated early in the course of the disease.We present here a case of infectious cerebral vasculitis due to rickettsiosis with some MRI features.

Using porous media is an efficient technique aimed at enhancing heat transfer in engineering systems. Replacing conventional fluids by ferrofluids and applying external magnetic fields through magnets is another method for heat transfer control. In this regard, understanding the behavior of ferrofluids through porous media in the presence of magnets is important. The present study aims at providing a thorough analysis of the properties of heat transfer resulting from the combination of buoyancy driven convection and thermomagnetic convection in a porous enclosure. The equations governing the two types of convection in the fluid as well as the conduction in the solid matrix are presented in the dimensionless form and solved numerically. The control volume finite element method has been used to solve the governing equations. The influence of various parameters such as the magnetic Rayleigh number, the porosity, Darcy number, and the interfacial heat transfer coefficient on the flow and temperature contours and on the Nusselt number is then investigated. For low interface coefficient, the heat transfer in the fluid is enhanced when the overall porosity in the cavity is raised, while for high coefficients, the porosity of the bottom porous layer is the main parameter affecting the heat transfer.

Blood supply to the human thalami is complex and multiple variants exist. The artery of Percheron is one of those variants and is characterized by a solitary arterial trunk that branches from one of the proximal segments of either posterior cerebral artery and sup- plies blood to the paramedian thalami. Its occlusion results in bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction sometimes extending to the midbrain. We report a case of bithalamic infarction secondary to occlusion of the artery of Percheron. We will illustrate the complex clinical symptomatology and underscore the role of imaging, especially MRI, for diagnosis.

Empyema necessitans is a rare condition where tuberculosis is the most common cause. It can be found in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients, especially in endemic areas. We report a case of a 29-year-old male from North Africa, with an enlarging mass on the right thoracic wall. Imaging, particularly CT showed a cystic lesion in the right chest wall communicating with homolateral pleural effusion, compatible with empyema necessitans. It also showed patterns of pulmonary tuberculosis in the right upper lung. Treatment of empyema necessitans is a combination of medical and surgicaltreatment. Our patient underwent a surgical treatment consisting of flattening of the empyema with a Gene X-pert study of the fluid and the shell, followed by an anti-TB treatment. Anatomopathology confirmed the diagnosis of caseo-follicular tuberculosis.

Face recognition has emerged as a prominent biometric identification technique with applications ranging from security to human-computer interaction. This paper proposes a new face recognition system by appropriately combining techniques for improved accuracy. Specifically, it incorporates a discrete cosine transform (DCT) pyramid for feature extraction, statistical measures for dimensionality reduction of the features, and a two-layer backpropagation neural network for classification. The DCT pyramid is used to effectively capture both low- and high-frequency information from face images to improve the ability of the system to recognise faces accurately. Meanwhile, the introduction of statistical measures for dimensionality reduction helps in decreasing the computational complexity and provides better discrimination, leading to more efficient processing. Moreover, the two-layer neural network introduced, which plays a vital role in efficiently handling complex patterns, further enhances the recognition capabilities of the system. As a result of these advancements, the system achieves an outstanding 99 % recognition rate on the Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL) data set, 98.88 % on YALE, and 99.16 % on AR. This performance demonstrates the robustness and potential of the proposed system for real-world applications in face recognition.

This research examines the complex interplay between the carbon nanotubes' length and radius and how that affects flow patterns, heat transfer properties, and entropy creation in both convergent and divergent channels. Our research elucidates the mechanisms at play by revealing a crucial link between carbon nanotube dimensions and the efficacy of heat transfer processes. In particular, carbon nanotubes with a longer length have better heat transmission properties, while carbon nanotubes with a smaller radius generate less entropy. From microfluidics to energy-efficient materials, these results show significant promise for optimizing thermal systems and improving performance. This research looks on the differences between the thermal transports of single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes in water. Thermo physical characteristics of carbon nanoparticles are one of a kind and essential for this purpose. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and to flow steadily a two-dimensional plane. The effects of thermal radiation on the heat transfer of a water-based fluid in convergent and divergent channels with decreasing and expanding walls have been studied. In order to quickly sketch the equations, the RK-4 method with shooting approach is used, and similarity transformation is employed to reduce their dimensionality. The key factors influencing hydrothermal performance have been visualized through the use of graphs. The production numbers of entropy are also shown and explained at length. The obtained data supports the reliability of the approach used. Surface heat transport was found to be negatively impacted by elongation. Colloidal single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) suspensions in water had higher thermal conductivity than water itself.

Mycetoma or Madura's foot is a rare condition in Morocco. It is a chronic infection that affects deep subcutaneous tissues and may eventually spread to deep tissues, muscles, and bones. It is caused by fungi or bacteria and most often affects the foot. Biopsy and microbiological examination help to establish a definitive diagnosis, but may delay it. Imaging plays a crucial role in early diagnosis, particularly MRI findings that show a pathognomonic sign of mycetoma which is the dot-in-the-circle sign. Computed tomography provides a better analysis of bone changes than plain radiography. Treatment is very difficult, especially if the diagnosis is delayed, and may even lead to amputation. We present here a case of mycetoma of the foot with some MRI features.

Atomic investigation of many common phenomena can be included as interesting achievements. Using these achievements makes it possible to design promising structures for various actual applications. The current research describes the mechanical performance of Ag and Cu samples after welding at various initial pressures. For this purpose, the Molecular Dynamics (MD) approach is used via the LAMMPS package. Technically, MD simulations are done in 2 main steps. Firstly, the atomic stability of welded Ag-Cu samples is described at various initial conditions (initial pressure). Then, tension test settings are implemented in equilibrated systems. The MD outputs indicate that the physical stability of the welded samples was altered by changing the initial pressure between 1 and 10 bar. Simulation results predict that the mechanical resistance of atomic samples decreases by enlarging the initial pressure. Numerically, the ultimate strength of the Ag-Cu matrixes decreases from 1.424 MPa to 1.241 MPa by increasing the initial pressure from 1 bar to 10 bar, respectively. This mechanical performance arises from atomic disorder created inside samples. So, it is expected that initial condition changes affect the atomic evolution of welded metallic samples, and this phenomenon should be considered in the design of mechanical structures in industrial cases.

According to the Net Zero long-term plan, about 95% of the building's CO2 emissions should be declined by 2050 compared to 2020. In this study, focusing on “energy efficiency” and “renewables”- key pillars of the Net Zero plan-two techniques of adding photovoltaic cells (PVs) along with the loading of phase change material (PCM) to Saudi Arabian buildings were studied. In the first pillar, the installation of PV cells on all the horizontal/vertical envelopes was checked and it was found that in the same area, the electricity production on the roof is 136% more than the south-oriented vertical envelope and 1126% more than the north one. On the other hand, PVs on the roof reduce the cooling load by 5.8%, increase the heating load by 2.5%, and finally reduce the annual energy demand by 4.6% as a side effect. For the second pillar, PCM was installed in vertical/horizontal envelopes. As the thickness of PCM increases, annual energy consumption decreases, but at a lower rate. When the thickness of PCM reaches 15 cm, it is expected that it will have an energy savings of 9855 kWh/year, but the calculations exhibit a value of 4701 kWh, which demonstrates the fall in PCM effectiveness with thickness rise. The effect of PCM installation location had a very important effect. To reduce the cooling load, PCM should be installed in the outermost layer, and vice versa for the heating load, it should be installed in the innermost layer. When the annual analysis is prioritized, installing PCM in the outermost layer can perform better than the innermost layer up to 14.6%.

The present study investigated the effect of heat flux frequency on doxorubicin adsorption by bio MOF11 biocarrier using molecular dynamics simulation. This simulation examined the effect of several heat flux frequencies (0.001, 0.002, 0.005, and 0.010 1/fs) on the quantity of drug particles absorbed, mean square displacement (MSD), diffusion coefficient, and interaction energy. The present outputs of simulations predicted the structural stability of the modeled MOF-drug system in 300 K. Also, simulation outputs predicted by frequency optimization, the adsorption of target drug inside MOF11 maximized, and efficiency of this sample in actual clinical applications, such as drug delivery process increased. Numerically, the optimum value of frequency was estimated to be 0.005 1/fs. Using this heat setting, the interaction energy between MOF 11 and the doxorubicin drug increased to −929.05 kcal/mol, and the number of penetrated drug particles inside MOF11 converged to 207 atoms. The results reveal that the MSD parameter reached 64.82 Å2 after 100000-time steps. By increasing frequency to 0.005 fs−1, this increased to 78.05 Å2. By increasing MSD parameter, the drug diffusion process effectively occurred, and the diffusion coefficient increased from 67.29 to 82.47 nm2/ns. It is expected that the findings of present investigation guide the design of more efficient drug delivery platforms, enhance drug-carrier interactions, improve manufacturing processes, and aid in developing novel nanomaterials with enhanced adsorption properties for various applications.

Among the different electrical energy storage technologies, the Carnot batteries are promising options with low specific cost that do not suffer from geographical limitations and power-capacity coupling. In addition to power balancing, this approach can also be unique for multi-vector energy management. A comprehensive evaluation (thermodynamic design and exergoenvironmental and exergoeconomic evaluations), comparison, and multi-objective optimization of four Carnot battery configurations based on solar-electric energy and a geothermal source is presented. Geothermal energy can simultaneously improve the thermodynamic and environmental performances of the Carnot battery. The main structure of all configurations is based on electrical energy obtained from PV and captured thermal energy from a geothermal source. The four Brayton, heat pump, flash, and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) units are periodically integrated. The outcomes point out that the discharging process is based on an ORC unit and a flash-heat pump cycle (F-HPC)-based charging process makes more optimal heat-to-power efficiency. Moreover, the Carnot battery based on the regenerative-Brayton cycle (R-BC) unit has a higher investment cost rate compared to the ORC unit (in the discharging process). When integrating the geothermal, the third configuration (R-HPC/R-BC) experiences the greatest improvement (5.3-fold) due to the increase in thermal energy received from the geothermal source.

The subclinical mastitis is a major scourge in the camel farms.The pathogenic staphylococci are among the dominant causative agents of mastitis.The first part of the present study aims to estimate the prevalence of Staphylococcus spp. in overall milk per udder samples (n = 18) randomly selected among three camel herds in the region of Biskra. Following an epidemiological investigation, raw milk underwent bacteriological analysis emphasizing the identification and enumeration of staphylococci. In the second part of study, we investigated the impact of the anatomical position of the udder quarters on the infection rates due to Staphylococcus spp. Therefore from six she-camels reared in two farms, 24 raw milk samples were collected. Results show that the high rates and the diversity of isolated Staphylococcus spp. reflect inappropriate husbandry practices and illusory health status of the main camel herds. The milk contamination rates recorded at the herds H1 (Loutaya), H2 (Ain El'Kerma), H3 (Oumache) and H5 (Loutaya) do not conform to the limited value in the Algerian Official Journal.Also, it is an indicator of the perennity of subclinical mastitis insidiously. The infection rates and the isolated species of staphylococci are not identical for all the quarters in the same she-camel which were confirmed by the Kendall Tau-B correlation test (p = 0.05). It would be important to apply the standards H.A.C.C.P. either at the herd level, during milk collection and in milk marketing shops. Vulgarization of both herders and consumers would minimize the risk of food-borne illnesses.

In the present study, a CFD simulation of a flow combined an offset jet and a wall jet (noted dual-jet) with the presence of co-flow is carried out. The effect of the intensity of the co-flow CFV (co-flow velocity) as well as its ejection angle α on the heat transfer exchanged in dual-jet flow is also performed. The present simulations are carried out for a Reynolds number Re = 15000, a nozzle-to-nozzle distance equal to 4 times the thickness of the nozzle, a co-flow velocity CFV = 10% − 40 % and a co-flow ejection angle α = 0° − 40°. The results of this computational study clearly show an intensification of the heat transfer exchanged between the flow and the wall by increasing the co-flow velocity CFV as well as its ejection angle α.

Pelvic or pelviperineal cellulitis is a rare but serious complication of bartholinitis and can be life-threatening. It is described of polymicrobial nature. The diagnosis of pelvic cellulitis remains essentially clinical with signs of local inflammation.The interest of imaging, CT in particular, is to assess the extent of the infection and abcess.In this report, we describe 2 cases of pelvic cellulitis complicating a bartholin's abscess caused by negative gram bacilli in 2 diabetic women in their sixties.

Hydatidosis is an echinococcosis caused by the development of Echinococcus granulosus larvae in humans. The lung is the second most frequent site after the liver. The primary mediastinal and pericardial localisations are extremely rare.Ultrasound and CT scans play an important role in the diagnosis of this disease.We report the case of an 11-year-old female patient from a rural environment with a history of dogs contact, whose symptomatology consisted of chest pain, dyspnoea, all evolving in a febrile context. The imagery showed the existence of multiple mediastinal and pericardial collections. This patient was rapidly managed with albendazole (ABZ) and scanography revealed an excellent therapeutic response.Primary mediastinal and pericardial hydatidosis is a very uncommon disease. It can be unfortunately revealed at the stage of vital prognosis complications. Ultrasound and computerized tomography (CT) are helpful for localizing and defining the morphologic features of hydatid cysts. It should be kept in mind, especially in patients from endemic areas.

Renal lymphangiectasia is a rare and benign renal lymphatics disorder. It is usually asymptomatic, and rarely revealed by lumbar pain, arterial hypertension or retroperitoneal fluid collection. Radiological diagnostic is challenging and can be done if radiologists are aware of the imaging findings. Here in, we report a case of a young woman admitted for the management of a blunt abdominal trauma. Computed tomography showed a huge right retroperitoneal fluid collection, communicating with a perirenal cyst. This perirenal collection was bilateral and symmetrical. The diagnostic of a ruptured perirenal lymphangiectasia was suspected and confirmed by needle puncture. We managed the case using percutaneous drainage. Reassessment at subsequent follow-up visits showed a total regression of the collection improvement in the patient's clinical.

Due to the rapid urbanization of many cities around the world, industrial manufacturing plants have been expanded quickly, leading to the discharge of large amounts of pollutants into the environment. Consequently, a significant deterioration in local air quality is recorded, representing a high health risk for the city's residents. In this context, the main objective of this work is to understand the dispersion of gas pollution in high-density urban environments, specifically the Hail region of Saudi Arabia. The simulations carried out with Ansys Fluent 19.0 were based on actual climatic conditions, with particular attention paid to accurately reproducing the exact topography of the study area. The main results concern the characterization of flow behavior and the dispersion of gas pollutants emitted by power plants. Several factors, including building geometry and wind speed, are examined. The study reveals that for a reference wind speed of more than 7 m/s, gaseous pollution exhibits a significant tendency to accumulate within buildings, resulting in significant concentrations.

Spinal cord infarction is an uncommon but devastating disorder caused by various conditions. It remains however a rare neurological complication in acute aortic injuries. In this context, aortic dissection is the most frequent etiological factor. Acute aortic intra mural hematoma and atheromatous penetrating ulcer remain exceptional. We encountered two cases of spinal cord infarction associated with acute aortic intra mural hematoma in one case and atheromatous penetrating ulcer in the other case that presented without typical severe pain. Thus, acute aortic injuries should be considered a cause of spinal cord infarction even if there is little or no pain.

Esophageal granular cell tumors (GCTs), or also called Abrikossoff's tumor are rare benign tumors originating from Schwann cells most commonly found in the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and tongue. Approximately 5% –8% arise in the gastrointestinal tract, and one-third of these tumors arise in the esophagus [1]. This neoplasm has a benign behavior usually, but there have been described a malignant transformation in 2% –3% of the cases. Herein, we discuss a case of a 70-year-old male patient with no pathological background, admitted for dysphagia evolving in 3 months that was explored with endoscopy and CT, the diagnosis at this level was challenging but the histopathology and Immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of granular cells thus confirm the diagnosis.The purpose of our work is to report the uncommon evolution of an Abrikossoff ‘s tumor located in the esophagus, as a warning of the possible malignant transformation of this tumor mostly benign; also we made a review of the literature.

Here, the authors introduce the concept of Janus acoustic metascreen for independent wavefront manipulations for two opposite incidences. They use acoustic circulators with rotating inner cores to achieve high nonreciprocity, and demonstrate tunable combinations of wavefront manipulations.

The nanofluids containing more two different types of nanoparticles with suspension of base fluids is referred to hybrid nanofluids. The modified class of hybrid type nanomaterials is new impressive category of nanofluid model which obtained with suspension of base fluid into more than two different types of nanoparticles. The heating influence and capacitance of modified hybrid nanoparticles is more impressive as compared to hybrid model and traditional nanofluid model. Following such motivations in mind, current exploration reports the comparative thermal inspection of three types of nanoparticles like aluminium oxide (Al2O3), silicon dioxide (SiO2) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) with suspension of base particles along with ethylene glycol (C2H6O2) base fluid. The flow pattern for such nanoparticles flow is observed due to curved surface comprising the stagnation point flow. The Casson fluid model is used to identify the rheological impact and base fluid characterization. The nonlinear radiation impact is also utilized to modify the model. The Keller box numerical outcomes against the developed set of equations are obtained. A comparative investigation for the suspension of modified hybrid nanomaterial (Al2O3+SiO2+TiO2−C2H6O2) is inspected.

Proliferative myositis is a rre benign pseudosarcomatous inflammatory process that rapidly grows in muscles. Its clinical and radiological features may, however, simulate a malignant tumor. We report ultrasound and MRI appearances of a 63 years-old woman with no significant anterior pathological history presented to our radiology department with two weeks history of a painful mass in the left musculus latissimus dorsi, increasing progressively in size, without history of recent trauma. This study describes the imaging features of these pseudo inflammatory process, which may help to suggest the diagnosis, but the imaging finding are variable and nonspecific. However, histopathological examination is usually recommended to confirm the diagnosis. In our case, the final diagnosis was proved by ultrasound-guided biopsy. We also review the imaging features of this entity in the current literature.

Optic nerve tuberculoma is a rare extra-pulmonary manifestation of mycobacterial infection. It is usually associated with HIV infected patients. Due to its clinical polymorphism, the diagnosis and management of the disease either in immunocompetent patients and immunocompromised ones remains challenging. Herein, we discuss a case of a 32-year-old patient with no history of immunodeficiency admitted for multifocal tuberculosis with a reduced visual acuity as an extra-pulmonary manifestation, and radiologically revealed the presence of tuberculoma in the optic nerve in the cerebral MRI.

Abstract Background This study aims to describe the clinical features of the isolated primitive splenic hydatid cyst, discuss and compare the different surgical approaches of this uncommon disease. Methods This is a descriptive retrospective study carried out over a period of 7 years extending from January 2013 to December 2019 reporting eight cases of isolated primitive splenic hydatid cysts. Data were collected from the register of the general surgery department of the Jendouba regional hospital. Files concerning another associated hydatid localization were excluded. Four patients underwent total splenectomy and four of them underwent different spleen preserving surgical techniques including resection of the protruding dome, partial splenectomy and pericystectomy. Results The diagnosis was incidentally made in 50% of cases. The main other revealing complaints are pain in the left upper quadrant of abdomen in 25% of cases and a painless renitent mass in the same quadrant in only 12,5%. None of patients who underwent total splenectomy had fever or sings of postoperative sepsis. Compared to those who had total splenectomy, patients who underwent spleen preserving surgery had a longer average hospital stay (9 vs 6,25 days) related to post-operative complications including abscess in the residual cavity after protruding dome resection in one patient and post-operative haemorrhage in one patient. Conclusions The current case series argues in favor of total splenectomy, preferably by laparoscopic route whenever the technical platform allows it, associated with some specific peri-operative therapeutic measures. It seems to be the safest way that helps to avoid post-operative complications of spleen saving surgical modalities. These complications are usually difficult to manage in poor countries with limited technical resources. Total splenectomy guarantees at least a decreased hospital stay, reduced healthcare costs, and the absence of recurrence in highly endemic underdeveloped countries.

This paper provides workspace determination and analysis based on the graphical technique of both spatial and planar parallel manipulators. The computation and analysis of workspaces will be carried out using the parameterization and three-dimensional representation of the workspace. This technique is implemented in CAD (Computer Aided Design) Software CATIA workbenches. In order to determine the workspace of the proposed manipulators, the reachable region by each kinematic chain is created as a volume/area; afterwards, the full reachable workspace is obtained by the application of a Boolean intersection function on the previously generated volumes/areas. Finally, the relations between the total workspace and the design parameters are simulated, and the Product Engineering Optimizer workbench is used to optimize the design variables in order to obtain a maximized workspace volume. Simulated annealing (SA) and Conjugate Gradient (CG) are considered in this study as optimization tools.

The advances in nanotechnology led to the development of new kinds of engineered fluids called nanofluids. Nanofluids have several industrial and engineering applications, such as solar energy systems, heat conduction processes, nuclear systems, chemical processes, etc. The motivation of the present work is to analyze and explore the thermal and dynamic behaviors of a non-Newtonian fluid flow under time retardation effects. The flow is unsteady and caused by a bidirectional, periodically moving surface. In addition to the convective heat transfer and fluid flow, the radiation and chemical reactions have also been considered. The governing equations are established based on the modified Cattaneo–Christov heat flux formulation. It was found that the bidirectional velocities oscillate periodically, and that the magnitude of the oscillation increases with the retardation time. Higher temperatures occur when the porosity parameter is increased, and lower concentrations are encountered for higher values of the concentration relaxation parameter. The current results can be applied in thermal systems, heat transfer enhancement, chemical synthesis, solar systems, power generation, medical applications, the automotive industry, process industries, refrigeration, etc.

A phenomenological 3D anisotropic nonlinear fatigue damage model has been developed for a short glass fiber-reinforced polyamide. The model is formulated within the framework of continuum damage mechanics and is based on a proposed anisotropic hyperelastic strain energy function. The proposed model accounts for the effects of fiber content and nonlinear material behavior. The mechanical behavior of polyamide reinforced with 20% and 30% wt short glass fiber has been experimentally investigated under quasi-static and fatigue loading. Fatigue tests under bending loading are carried out on rectangular specimens cut in the parallel and perpendicular direction to the mold flow direction. The proposed fatigue damage model allows predicting the fatigue damage of composite materials reinforced with short fiberglass, considering fiber orientation and fiber content. The model is used to predict the damage evolution and the number of cycles to failure, and good agreement between predicted values and experimental data is observed.

A numerical investigation of a phase change material (PCM) energy storage tank working with carbon nanotube (CNT)–water nanofluid is performed. The study was conducted under actual climatic conditions of the Ha’il region (Saudi Arabia). Two configurations related to the absence or presence of conductive baffles are studied. The tank is filled by encapsulated paraffin wax as the PCM, and CNT–water nanofluid flows through the capsules. The main goal is to increase the temperature of the PCM to 70 °C in order to store the thermal energy, which can then be used during the night and cloudy weather. Numerical computations are made using the finite element method (FEM) based on actual measured weather conditions. Climate conditions were collected from a weather station located on the roof of the engineering college’s building at the University of Ha’il. The collected data served as input to the numerical model, and the simulations were performed for three months (December, March, and July). The solid CNT volume fraction range was (0 ≤ ϕ ≤ 0.05) and the nanofluid volume flow rate ranged was (0.5 L/min ≤ V ≤ 3 L/min). For both considered cases (with and without baffles), it was found that the use of CNT–nanofluid led to a reduction in the charging time and enhanced its performance. An increase in the volumetric flow rate was found to accelerate the melting process. The best performances of the storage tank occurred during July due to the highest solar irradiation. Furthermore, it was found that the use of baffles had no beneficial effects on the melting process.

Iron oxide and silica nanoparticles were individually incorporated in tin-based Babbitt alloy and combined to prepare a novel class of nanocomposites for bearing material applications. The route of liquid metallurgy in combination with the stirring technique was adopted to manufacture nanocomposites. Microstructural evolution and mechanical property evaluation were performed by optical and electron microscopy, EDS, hardness, compression, and wear tests. The morphology of the Cu6Sn5 phase was changed from elongated to spherical in the microstructures of nanocomposites. The solitary addition of 0.5 wt% iron oxide nanoparticles improved the hardness and compressive strength but adversely affected the wear properties by increasing the weight loss and friction coefficient value. In contrast, the addition of 0.5 wt% silica nanoparticles could not significantly increase the hardness and compressive strength but it could improve the tribological properties by reducing the weight loss and friction coefficient value. Tin-based Babbitt alloy showed a compressive strength of 89.22 ± 0.50 MPa after the addition of 0.5 wt% iron oxide showing a rise of ~11%. The combined effect of the addition of both types of nanoparticles showed considerable results, i.e., a rise of ~7.9% (86.75 ± 0.68 MPa). The balanced approach of incorporating dual reinforcements of 0.25 wt% iron oxide and 0.25 wt% silica nanoparticles intermediately improved the hardness, compressive strength, and decreased weight loss.

Background and purpose: The viscosity and thermal conductivity play an important role in transport of mass and thermal energy. The effect of temperature on these properties could not be ignored during fluid flow because flow pattern determines the performance and economic situation of the overall process. In view of these facts, the models of these properties are modified to measure the temperature effects and used in the transport equations of non-Newtonian fluid. Design of model: The mathematical model is based on continuity, momentum and energy equations. The model is simplified by applying the boundary layer and similarity transformations and then solved by numerical method. The influence of affected properties is examined on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as on the Skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number under two flow conditions: a) when mainstream fluid moves faster than surface motion and b) vice versa. Findings: In the results, the viscosity and thermal conductivity are reduced with increasing of temperature which became the cause of enhancement in velocity profile and reduction in temperature profile. Moreover, Nusselt number is increased with average rate 2.8% and 0.45% respectively under both conditions when viscosity is reduced by temperature.

This paper presents a novel experimental and computational methodology to characterize the fracture behavior of the intermetallic bonding layer particularly for the bimetallic forming applications. The proposed methodology was applied to Al-Sn bearing alloy/mild steel bimetallic composite. Tensile-shear bimetal samples were fabricated to test the metallurgical bonding layer under shear conditions. Based on the macroscopic behavior, the coupled elasto-plasticity and damage constitutive equations for the bond material were formulated and implemented. The used damage model is written within the framework of the thermodynamic of irreversible processes with the concept of internal state variables and the framework of continuum damage mechanics (CDM). The characterization of the shear fracture behavior of the bond has included FE numerical simulation of tensile-shear tests of the bimetallic composite using ABAQUS/Explicit® FE code with the specially developed VUMAT subroutine. Accordingly, a calibration approach has been proposed to identify the fracture parameters of the bond based on the correspondence between the numerically predicted and experimental global shear force–displacement responses. These parameters have been applied to FE model of the U-bending testing of Al-Sn/mild steel bimetallic composite. A qualitative correspondence between numerically predicted results and U-bending experiment of the bimetal conducted under high-speed camera is deemed extremely satisfactory.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an emerged pandemic disease caused by a new coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2). Initially the mortality of this infection are related to severe acute respiratory distress syndrome, but several publications also showed that this infection caused an inflammatory response with severe systemic complications [1]. Venous thromboembolism has been shown to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with COVID-19, both in the general inpatient and in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting, and even in patients receiving therapeutic anticoagulation [2].We report the case of an adult patient who presented a cavernous sinus thrombosis during his hospitalization for COVID-19.

Chiral phononic crystals (PnCs) provide unique properties not offered by conventional metamaterial based on classic Bragg scattering and local resonance. However, it is insufficient to only consider the inertial amplification effect to describe its bandgap mechanism due to the absence of the bandgap caused by the chirality in some specific chiral structures. Here, we theoretically and experimentally introduce an analogy with Thomson scattering in electromagnetic waves to characterize the bandgap phenomena in chiral PnCs with translation–rotation coupling. Another phononic structures with translation–translation coupling are proposed to illustrate the universality of the analogy. We evidence that the coupling motion in chiral unit cells is similar to the result of Thomson scattering, which quantitatively formulizing as inertial amplification in theory and, twice elastic Thomson scattering allows the waves in the same polarization mode to superpose in antiphase, which is essence of the bandgap formation. This finding sheds a new light on the physics of the elastodynamic wave manipulation in chiral PnCs, thus opening a definite route for the pragmatic exploitation of chiral PnCs as well as other structures with motion coupling in achieving low-frequency and broad bandgaps.

Cost-effective, lightweight design alternatives for the thermal management of heat transfer equipment are required. In this study, porous plate and perforated-porous plates are used for nanoliquid convection control in a flexible-walled vented cavity system under uniform magnetic field effects. The finite element technique is employed with the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) method. The numerical study is performed for different values of Reynolds number (200≤Re≤1000), Hartmann number (0≤Ha≤50), Cauchy number (10−8≤Ca≤10−4) and Darcy number (10−6≤Da≤0.1). At Re = 600, the average Nusselt number (Nu) is 6.3% higher by using a perforated porous plate in a cavity when compared to a cavity without a plate, and it is 11.2% lower at Re = 1000. At the highest magnetic field strength, increment amounts of Nu are in the range of 25.4–29.6% by considering the usage of plates. An elastic inclined wall provides higher Nu, while thermal performance improvements in the range of 3.6–6% are achieved when varying the elastic modulus of the wall. When using a perforated porous plate and increasing its permeability, 22.8% increments of average Nu are obtained. A vented cavity without a plate and elastic wall provides the highest thermal performance in the absence of a magnetic field, while using a porous plate with an elastic wall results in higher Nu when a magnetic field is used.

Seismic metamaterials (SMs) are expected to assist or replace traditional isolation systems owing to their strong attenuation of seismic waves. In this work, a one-dimensional inverted T-shaped SM (1D ITSM) composed of arrays of inverted T-shaped structures on a half space is proposed, which have an ultra-wide first bandgap (FBG) from 6.7 to 17.2 Hz. We find that the FBG is composed of two parts; part 1 with surface evanescent waves from 6.7 to 11.0 Hz and part 2 with no surface modes from 11.0 to 17.2 Hz by using the complex band structures. The propagation of seismic surface waves in the 1D ITSM is different in these two frequency ranges of the FBG. In part 1, the seismic surface waves are significantly attenuated in the 1D ITSM because of the surface evanescent waves, while in part 2, the surface waves are converted into bulk waves because surface waves cannot exist in the ITSM. Finally, the ultra-wide FBG is verified by using a kind of the two-dimensional ITSM in large-scale field experiments.

Low-visibility conditions (LVC) are a common cause of air traffic, road, and sailing fatalities. Forecasting those conditions is an arduous challenge for weather forecasters all over the world. In this work, a new decision support system is developed based on an analog ensemble (AnEn) method to predict LVC over 15 airports of Morocco for 24 forecast hours. Hourly forecasts from the AROME model of eight predictors were used to select the skillful analogs from 2016 to 2018. The verified hourly observations were used as members of the ensemble. The developed ensemble prediction system (EPS) was assessed over 1 year (2019) as a single-value forecast and as a probabilistic forecast. Results analysis shows that AnEn outperforms persistence and its best performances are perceived generally during night and early-morning lead times. From continuous verification analysis, AnEn forecasting errors are found to be location- and lead-time-dependent and become higher for low-visibility cases. AnEn draws an averaged Centered Root Mean Square Error of about 1500 m for all visibilities, 2000 m for fog and 1500 m for mist. As an EPS, AnEn is under-dispersive for all lead times and draws a positive bias for fog and mist events. For probabilistic verification analysis, AnEn visibility forecasts are converted to binary occurrences depending on a set of thresholds from 200 m to 6000 m by a step of 200 m. It is found that the averaged Heidke Skill Score for AnEn is 0.65 for all thresholds. However, AnEn performance generally becomes weaker for fog or mist events prediction.
