In this work, we report the synthesis and investigation of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$(Co$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$)IrO$_6$. Our polycrystalline sample forms as a single-phase double perovskite in monoclinic $P2_{1}/n$ space group. Co and Ir are most likely in bivalent and tetravalent oxidation states, respectively, while Mossbauer spectroscopy indicates that Fe is in a trivalent state. The ac and dc magnetization data suggest a ferrimagnetic behavior resulting from the presence of two antiferromagnetic sublattices at Co/Fe and Ir sites. The large coercive field H_C $\simeq$ 32 kOe observed at 10 K, comparable to that of other double perovskites of interest for hard magnets, is discussed in terms of the structural distortion and the spin and orbital magnetic moments of the transition metal ions., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMn$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$O$_{6}$ (LSCMFO) compound was prepared by solid state reaction and its structural, electronic and magnetic properties were investigated. The material forms in rhombohedral $R\bar{3}c$ structure, and the presence of distinct magnetic interactions leads to the formation of a Griffiths phase above its FM transition temperature (150 K), possibly related to the nucleation of small short-ranged ferromagnetic clusters. At low temperatures, a spin glass-like phase emerges and the system exhibits both the conventional and the spontaneous exchange bias (EB) effects. These results resemble those reported for La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ but are discrepant to those found when Fe partially substitutes Co in La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$(Co$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)MnO$_{6}$, for which the EB effect is observed in a much broader temperature range. The unidirectional anisotropy observed for LSCMFO is discussed and compared with those of resembling double-perovskite compounds, being plausibly explained in terms of its structural and electronic properties., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The delicate balance between spin-orbit coupling, Coulomb repulsion and crystalline electric field interactions observed in Ir-based oxides is usually manifested as exotic magnetic behavior. Here we investigate the evolution of the exchange coupling between Co and Ir for partial La substitution by Ca in La$_{2}$CoIrO$_6$. A great advantage of the use of Ca$^{2+}$ as replacement for La$^{3+}$ is the similarity of its ionic radii. Thus, the observed magnetic changes can more easily be associated to electronic variations. A thorough investigation of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the La$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$CoIrO$_6$ system was carried out by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR), AC and DC magnetization, XAS, XMCD, Raman spectroscopy, electrical resistivity and dielectric permittivity. Our XAS results show that up to 25% of Ca substitution at the La site results in the emergence of Co$^{3+}$, possibly in high spin state, while the introduction of larger amount of Ca leads to the increase of Ir valence. The competing magnetic interactions resulting from the mixed valences lead to a coexistence of a magnetically ordered and an emerging spin glass (SG) state for the doped samples. Our $\mu$SR results indicate that for La$_{2}$CoIrO$_6$ a nearly constant fraction of a paramagnetic (PM) phase persists down to low temperature, possibly related to the presence of a small amount of Ir$^{3+}$ and to the anti-site disorder at Co/Ir sites. For the doped compounds the PM phase freezes below 30 K, but there is still some dynamics associated with the SG. The dielectric data obtained for the parent compound and the one with 25% of Ca-doping indicate a possible magnetodielectric effect, which is discussed in terms of the electron hopping between the TM ions, the anti-site disorder and the distorted crystalline structure., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

In the zero-field-cooled exchange bias (ZEB) effect the unidirectional magnetic anisotropy is set at low temperatures even when the system is cooled in the absence of external magnetic field. La$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ stands out as presenting the largest ZEB reported so far, while for La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ the exchange bias field ($H_{EB}$) is one order of magnitude smaller. Here we show that La$_{1.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$CoMnO$_{6}$ also exhibits a pronounced shift of its magnetic hysteresis loop, with intermediate $H_{EB}$ value in respect to Ca- and Sr-doped samples. In order to figure out the microscopic mechanisms responsible for this phenomena, these compounds were investigated by means of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, muon spin rotation and relaxation, AC and DC magnetization, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The parent compound La$_{2}$CoMnO$_{6}$ was also studied for comparison, as a reference of a non-ZEB material. Our results show that the Ba-, Ca- and Sr-doped samples present a small amount of phase segregation, and that the ZEB effect is strongly correlated to the system's structure. We also observed that mixed valence states Co$^{2+}$/Co$^{3+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$/Mn$^{3+}$ are already present at the La$_{2}$CoMnO$_{6}$ parent compound, and that Ba$^{2+}$/Ca$^{2+}$/Sr$^{2+}$ partial substitution at La$^{3+}$ site leads to a large increase of Co average valence, with a subtle augmentation of Mn formal valence. Estimates of the Co and Mn valences from the $L$-edge XAS indicate the presence of oxygen vacancies in all samples (0.05$\leq \delta \leq$0.1). Our XMCD results show a great decrease of Co moment for the doped compounds, and indicate that the shift of the hysteresis curves for these samples is related to uncompensated antiferromagnetic coupling between Co and Mn., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures + supplementary material

We report an experimental study of the CoFe2O4/CoFe2 nanocomposite, a nanostructured material formed by hard (CoFe2O4) and soft (CoFe2) magnetic materials. The precursor material, cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4), was prepared using the conventional stoichiometric gel-combustion method. The nanocomposite material was obtained by reducing partially the precursor material using activated charcoal as reducing agent in air and argon atmospheres, at 800 and 900 C respectively. The magnetic hysteresis loops demonstrate that, in general, prepared nanocomposite samples display single magnetic behavior, indicating exchange coupling between the soft and hard magnetic phases. However, for nanocomposite samples prepared at higher temperatures, the hysteresis measurements show steps typical of two-phase magnetic behavior, suggesting the existence of two non-coupled magnetic phases. The studied nanocomposites presented coercivity (HC) of about 0.7 kOe, which is considerably lower than the expected value for cobalt ferrite. A huge increase in HC (>440%) and maximum energy product (about 240%) was obtained for the nanocomposite after high energy milling processing.

We report an experimental study of the bimagnetic nanocomposites CoFe2/CoFe2O4.The precursor material, CoFe2O4 was prepared using the conventional stoichiometric combustion method. The nanocomposite CoFe2/CoFe2O4 was obtained by total reduction of CoFe2O4 using a thermal treatment at 350oC in H2 atmospheres following a partial oxidation in O2 atmospheres at 380oC during 120; 30; 15, 10, and 5 min. The X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy confirmed the formation the material CoFe2/CoFe2O4 The magnetic hysteresis with different saturation magnetization confirms the formation of the CoFe2/CoFe2O4 with different content of CoFe2O4. The high energy milling to the precursor material increase the coercivity from 1.0 to 3.3 kOe, however the same effect was not observed to the CoFe2/CoFe2O4 material.

The isostructural double perovskites Ba$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Ba$_2$CuWO$_6$ are shown by theory and experiment to be frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnets with opposing dominant magnetic interactions. This is driven by differences in orbital hybridisation of Te$^{6+}$ and W$^{6+}$. A spin-liquid-like ground state is predicted for Ba$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$ solid solution similar to recent observations in Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$., Comment: 4+4 pages, 3+2 figures

The spin-1/2 square-lattice Heisenberg model is predicted to have a quantum disordered ground state when magnetic frustration is maximized by competing nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ interactions ($J_2/J_1 \approx 0.5$). The double perovskites Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are isostructural spin-1/2 square-lattice antiferromagnets with N\'eel ($J_1$ dominates) and columnar ($J_2$ dominates) magnetic order, respectively. Here we characterize the full isostructural solid solution series Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{1-x}$W$_x$)O$_6$ ($0 \leq x \leq 1$) tunable from N\'eel order to quantum disorder to columnar order. A spin-liquid-like ground state was previously observed for the $x$ = 0.5 phase, but we show that the magnetic order is suppressed below 1.5 K in a much wider region of $x \approx$ 0.1-0.6. This coincides with significant $T$-linear terms in the low-temperature specific heat. However, density functional theory calculations predict most of the materials are not in the highly frustrated $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.5$ region square-lattice Heisenberg model. Thus, a combination of both magnetic frustration and quenched disorder is the likely origin of the spin-liquid-like state in $x$ = 0.5., Comment: 20+5 pages, 6+4 figures. La3Co4Sn13 is a superconducting material with transition temperature at Tc = 2.70 K, which presents a superlattice structural transition at T* ~ 150 K, a common feature for this class of compounds. However, for this material, it is not clear that at T* the lattice distortions arise from a charge density wave (CDW) or from a distinct microscopic origin. Interestingly, it has been suggested in isostructural non-magnetic intermetallic compounds that T* can be suppressed to zero temperature, by combining chemical and external pressure, and a quantum critical point is argued to be observed near these critical doping/pressure. Our study shows that application of pressure on single-crystalline La3Co4Sn13 enhances Tc and decreases T*. We observe thermal hysteresis loops for cooling/heating cycles around T* for P > 0.6 GPa, in electrical resistivity measurements, which are not seen in x-ray diffraction data. The hysteresis in electrical measurements may be due to the pinning of the CDW phase to impurities/defects, while the superlattice structural transition maintains its ambient pressure second-order transition nature under pressure. From our experiments we estimate that T* vanishes at around 5.5 GPa, though no quantum critical behavior is observed up to 2.53 GPa., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present an extensive study of the ferromagnetic heavy fermion compound U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$. Measurements of electrical resistivity, specific heat and magnetic properties show that U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ orders ferromagnetically at ambient pressure with a Curie temperature $T_{C} = 6.8 \pm 0.3$ K. The low temperature magnetic behavior of this soft ferromagnet is dominated by the excitation of gapless spin-wave modes. Our results on the transport properties of U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ under pressures up to $2.49$ GPa suggest that U$_4$Ru$_7$Ge$_6$ has a putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP) at $P_c \approx 1.7 \pm 0.02$ GPa. In the ordered phase, ferromagnetic magnons scatter the conduction electrons and give rise to a well defined power law temperature dependence in the resistivity. The coefficient of this term is related to the spin-wave stiffness and measurements of the very low temperature resistivity allow to accompany the behavior of this quantity as the the ferromagnetic QCP is approached. We find that the spin-wave stiffness decreases with increasing pressure implying that the transition to the non-magnetic Fermi liquid state is driven by the softening of the magnons. The observed quantum critical behavior of the magnetic stiffness is consistent with the influence of disorder in our system. At quantum criticality ($P = P_c \approx 1.7 \pm 0.02$ GPa), the resistivity shows the behavior expected for an itinerant metallic system near a ferromagnetic QCP., Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, 13 figures

Because of their complex Fermi surfaces, the identification of the physical phenomena contributing to electronic scattering in the Fe-based superconductors is a difficult task. Here, we report on the electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect in two series of BaFe$_{2-x}$T$_x$As$_2$ (T = Co, Ni) crystals with different values of $x$. The T contents were chosen so that the majority of the investigated samples present an intermediate magnetically ordered state and a superconducting ground state. We interpret the obtained results in terms of scattering of charge carriers by magnetic excitations instead of describing them as resulting uniquely from effects related to multiple-band conduction. Our samples are single crystals from the structural point of view and their overall magnetotransport properties are dominated by a single magnetic state.

A quantum spin liquid state has long been predicted to arise in spin-1/2 Heisenberg square-lattice antiferromagnets at the boundary region between N\'eel (nearest-neighbor interaction dominates) and columnar (next-nearest-neighbor dominates) antiferromagnetic order. However, there are no known compounds in this region. Here we use $d^{10}$-$d^0$ cation mixing to tune the magnetic interactions on the square lattice while simultaneously introducing disorder. We find spin-liquid-like behavior in the double perovskite Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, where the isostructural end phases Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are N\'eel and columnar type antiferromagnets, respectively. We show that magnetism in Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ is entirely dynamic down to 19 mK. Additionally, we observe at low temperatures for Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, similar to several spin liquid candidates, a plateau in muon spin relaxation rate and a strong $T$-linear dependence in specific heat. Our observations for Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ highlight the role of disorder in addition to magnetic frustration in spin liquid physics., Comment: 19+4 pages, 4+3 figures. In this work we report the synthesis and structural, electronic and magnetic properties of La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6 double-perovskite. This is a re-entrant spin cluster material which exhibits a non-negligible negative exchange bias effect when it is cooled in zero magnetic field from an unmagnetized state down to low temperature. X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetometry results indicate mixed valence state at Co site, leading to competing magnetic phases and uncompensated spins at the magnetic interfaces. We compare the results for this Ca-doped material with those reported for the resemblant compound La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6, and discuss the much smaller spontaneous exchange bias effect observed for the former in terms of its structural and magnetic particularities. For La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6, when successive magnetization loops are carried, the spontaneous exchange bias field inverts its sign from negative to positive from the first to the second measurement. We discuss this behavior based on the disorder at the magnetic interfaces, related to the presence of a glassy phase. This compound also exhibits a large conventional exchange bias, for which there is no sign inversion of the exchange bias field for consecutive cycles.

Temperature dependent magnetization, muon spin rotation and $^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectroscopy experiments performed on crystals of intermetallic FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_{y}$ ($y=0.11,0.14,0.17,0.22,0.27$, $0.29,0.32$) are reported. Whereas at $y=0.11$ even a sensitive magnetic microprobe such as $\mu$SR does not detect magnetism, all other samples display weak ferromagnetism with a magnetic moment of up to 0.22 $\mu_B$ per Fe atom. As a function of doping and of temperature a crossover from short range to long range magnetic order is observed, characterized by a broadly distributed spontaneous internal field. However, the $y=0.14$ and $y=0.17$ remain in the short range ordered state down to the lowest investigated temperature. The transition from short range to long range order appears to be accompanied by a change of the character of the spin fluctuations, which exhibit spin wave excitations signature in the LRO part of the phase diagram. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy for $y=0.27$ and 0.32 indicates that the internal field lies in the plane perpendicular to the crystallographic $c$ axis. The field distribution and its evolution with doping suggest that the details of the Fe magnetic moment formation and the consequent magnetic state are determined not only by the dopant concentration but also by the way the replacement of the Ga atoms surrounding the Fe is accomplished.

We report on magneto-optical imaging, magnetization, Hall effect and magneto-resistance experiments in Nb/Al_2O_3/Co thin film heterostructures. The magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the plane of the film and gives rise to abrupt flux penetration of dendritic form. A magnetization texture is imprinted in the Co layer in perfect coincidence with these ramifications. The spin domains that mimic the vortex dendrites are stable upon the field removal. Moreover, the imprinted spin structure remains visible up to room temperature. Complementary magnetization, Hall effect and magneto-resistance experiments were performed in a similar sample where electrical contacts were placed on the Co layer. In the region of the field - temperature diagram where flux instabilities are known to occur in Nb films, irregular jumps are observed in the magnetic hysteresis and large amplitude noise is detected in the magneto-resistance and Hall resistivity data when measured as a function of the field., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We report on the study of magnetic properties of the La1.5Ca0.5CoIrO6 double perovskite. Via ac magnetic susceptibility we have observed evidence of weak ferromagnetism and reentrant spin glass behavior on an antiferromagnetic matrix. Regarding the magnetic behavior as a function of temperature, we have found that the material displays up to three inversions of its magnetization, depending on the appropriate choice of the applied magnetic field. At low temperature the material exhibit exchange bias effect when it is cooled in the presence of a magnetic field. Also, our results indicate that this effect may be observed even when the system is cooled at zero field. Supported by other measurements and also by electronic structure calculations, we discuss the magnetic reversals and spontaneous exchange bias effect in terms of magnetic phase separation and magnetic frustration of Ir4+ ions located between the antiferromagnetically coupled Co ions., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures and supplemental material

Magnetic materials for specific applications require an accurate control and complete comprehension of their magnetic properties. In particular, nanoparticles embedded in a polycrystalline matrix emerge as good candidates for applications due to the possibility of tuning the magnetic properties through interface interaction effects. Here, iron/w\"ustite composite is prepared using high energy mechanical milling from iron powder and water. The sample is analyzed by X-ray diffraction, dynamic laser light scattering, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, field cooling and zero field cooling curves, magnetization curves, and magnetic hyperthermia. Based on the results, we identify that the produced sample is like Fe nanoparticles embedded in a w\"ustite matrix, with high stability in time, and shows noticeable features such as exchange bias effect at low temperatures and promising temperatures reached in a short time interval when considered magnetic hyperthermia, $\sim 46\,^\circ$C, becoming an interesting candidate for biological applications, such as the one employed for cancer therapy., Comment: 6 figures

We prepared very high-coercivity cobalt ferrite nanoparticles using short-time high-energy mechanical milling. After the milling process, the coercivity of the nanoparticles reached 3.75 kOe - a value almost five times higher than that obtained for the non-milled sample. We performed a thermal treatment on the milled sample at 300, 400, and 600 oC for 30 and 180 mins, and studied the changes in the magnetic parameters due to the thermal treatment using the hysteresis curves, Williamson-Hall analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal treatment at 600 oC causes a decrease in the microstructural strain and density of structural defects resulting in a significant decrease in coercivity. Furthermore, this thermal treatment increases the size of the nanoparticles and, as a consequence, there is a substantial increase in the saturation magnetization. The coercivity and the saturation magnetization are less affected by the thermal treatment at 300 and 400 oC.

In this work we report a study of the magnetic behavior of ferrimagnetic oxide CoFe2O4 treated by mechanical milling with different grinding balls. The cobalt ferrite nanoparticles were prepared using a simple hydrothermal method and annealed at 500oC. The non-milled sample presented coercivity of about 1.9 kOe, saturation magnetization of 69.5 emu/g, and a remanence ratio of 0.42. After milling, two samples attained coercivity of 4.2 and 4.1 kOe, and saturation magnetization of 67.0 and 71.4 emu/g respectively. The remanence ratio MR/MS for these samples increase to 0.49 and 0.51, respectively. To investigate the influence of the microstructure on the magnetic behavior of these samples, we used X-ray powder diffraction (XPD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The XPD analysis by the Williamson-Hall plot was used to estimate the average crystallite size and strain induced by mechanical milling in the samples.

We have performed detailed $^{57}$Fe M\"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements on Ba$_{0.78}$K$_{0.22}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ single crystal mosaics showing antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_N$ with superconductivity below $T_C$. Analysis of the M\"ossbauer spectra shows a decrease in the magnetic hyperfine (hf) field but no change in the magnetic volume fraction below $T_C$. This clearly indicates the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in these compounds. The decrease in the magnetic hf field below $T_C$ depends on the difference between $T_N$ and $T_C$, being the largest for $T_N$ close to $T_C$. Two different explanations for this observation are given. We also find that the non-magnetic volume fraction below $T_N$ correlates with the Ni doping $x$, being large for high $T_C$ and small for high $T_N$.

We have studied the magnetism in superconducting single crystals of EuFe2 As1.4 P0.6 by using the local probe techniques of zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation and 151 Eu/57 Fe M\"ossbauer spec- troscopy. All of these measurements reveal magnetic hyperfine fields below the magnetic ordering temperature TM = 18 K of the Eu2+ moments. The analysis of the data shows that there is a coexistence of ferromagnetism, resulting from Eu2+ moments ordered along the crystallographic c-axis, and superconductivity below TSC \approx 15 K. We find indications for a change in the dynamics of the small Fe magnetic moments (\sim 0.07 \mu B) at the onset of superconductivity: below TSC the Fe magnetic moments seem to be "frozen" within the ab-plane.

Static magnetic order of quasi two-dimensional FeAs compounds Sr4A2O6-xFe2As2, with A = Sc and V, has been detected by 57Fe Moessbauer and muon spin relaxation ({\mu}SR) spectroscopies. The non-superconducting stoichiometric (x = 0) A = Sc system exhibits a static internal/hyperfine magnetic field both at the 57Fe and {\mu}+ sites, indicating antiferromagnetic order of Fe moments below TN = 35 K with ~ 0.1 Bohr magneton per Fe at T = 2 K. The superconducting and oxygen deficient (x = 0.4) A = V system exhibits a static internal field only at the {\mu}+ site below TN ~ 40 K, indicating static magnetic order of V moments co-existing with superconductivity without freezing of Fe moments. These results suggest that the 42622 FeAs systems belong to the same paradigm with the 1111 and 122 FeAs systems with respect to magnetic behavior of Fe moments., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures: for information, contact tomo@lorentz.phys.columbia.edu

We report muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements of single crystal Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Sr(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. From measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda$ we find that for optimally- and over-doped samples, $1/\lambda(T\to 0)^2$ varies monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature T$_{\rm C}$. Within the superconducting state we observe a positive shift in the muon precession signal, likely indicating that the applied field induces an internal magnetic field. The size of the induced field decreases with increasing doping but is present for all Co concentrations studied., Comment: 7 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

We have performed transverse field muon spin rotation measurements of single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07})_2$As$_2$ with the applied magnetic field along the $\hat{c}$ direction. Fourier transforms of the measured spectra reveal an anisotropic lineshape characteristic of an Abrikosov vortex lattice. We have fit the $\mu$SRSR spectra to a microscopic model in terms of the penetration depth $\lambda$ and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\kappa$. We find that as a function of temperature, the penetration depth varies more rapidly than in standard weak coupled BCS theory. For this reason we first fit the temperature dependence to a power law where the power varies from 1.6 to 2.2 as the field changes from 200G to 1000G. Due to the surprisingly strong field dependence of the power and the superfluid density we proceeded to fit the temperature dependence to a two gap model, where the size of the two gaps is field independent. From this model, we obtained gaps of $2\Delta_1=3.7k_BT_c$ and $2\Delta_2=1.6k_BT_c$, corresponding to roughly 6 meV and 3 meV respectively.

Pb films embedded with homogeneously distributed cobalt (Co) nanoparticles (mean size 4.5 nm) have been prepared. Previous transport investigations have shown that Co particles induce spontaneous vortices below the superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) in zero external magnetic field. In this paper we study in detail the influence of the Co volume franction and an external magnetic field on the superconducting transition in such composites. The large difference in T$_c$-reduction between the as-prepared and annealed samples can be attributed to the different superconducting coherence lengths and the resulting different diameters of the spontaneous vortices in these samples., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

A hybrid system which consists of a superconducting (SC) Pb film (100 nm thickness) containing $\sim$1 vol% single domain ferromagnetic (FM) Co particles of mean-size $\sim$4.5 nm reveal unusual magnetic properties: (i) a controlled switching between the usual diamagnetic and the unusual paramagnetic Meissner effect in field cooling as well as in zero-field cooling experiments (ii) amplification of the positive magnetization when the sample enters the SC state below T$_c$. These experimental findings can be explained by the formation of spontaneous vortices and the possible alignment of these vortices due to the foregoing alignment of the Co particle FM moments by an external magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The recent discovery and subsequent developments of FeAs-based superconductors have presented novel challenges and opportunities in the quest for superconducting mechanisms in correlated-electron systems. Central issues of ongoing studies include interplay between superconductivity and magnetism as well as the nature of the pairing symmetry reflected in the superconducting energy gap. In the cuprate and RE(O,F)FeAs (RE = rare earth) systems, the superconducting phase appears without being accompanied by static magnetic order, except for narrow phase-separated regions at the border of phase boundaries. By muon spin relaxation measurements on single crystal specimens, here we show that superconductivity in the AFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (A = Ca,Ba,Sr) systems, in both the cases of composition and pressure tunings, coexists with a strong static magnetic order in a partial volume fraction. The superfluid response from the remaining paramagnetic volume fraction of (Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ exhibits a nearly linear variation in T at low temperatures, suggesting an anisotropic energy gap with line nodes and/or multi-gap effects., Comment: 14 pages 7 figures (4 for main text and 3 for on-line supplementary documents)

Thin films of silver containing 0.3 - 1.5 at % Fe have been prepared by vapor co-deposition. Depending on substrate temperature and iron concentration we could systematically follow the formation of nanometer size clusters of iron from initially dilute iron monomers. samples were characterized via X-ray diffraction, resistivity and M\"{o}ssbauer spectroscopic measurements. The magnetic behavior derived from M\"{o}ssbauer data can be best described with an ensemble of ferromagnetic mono-domain particles. The magnetic freezing observed at low temperatures, is controlled via the inter-particle interactions mediated via conduction electron polarization, i.e. RKKY interaction. The interaction of the cluster magnetic moments with the conduction electron sea is best quantified by the electrical resistivity data. For all studied concentrations we find a non-monotonic variation with temperature which can be understood by competing shielding of the cluster moments by conduction electron spin scattering due to Kondo effect and the magnetic coupling.

Zero-field (ZF) muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements have revealed static commensurate magnetic order of Fe moments in NdOFeAs below $T_{N} \sim 135$ K, with the ordered moment size nearly equal to that in LaOFeAs, and confirmed similar behavior in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. In single crystals of superconducting (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, $\mu$SR spectra indicate static magnetism with incommensurate or short-ranged spin structure in $\sim$ 70 % of volume below $T_{N} \sim$ 80 K, coexisting with remaining volume which exhibits superfluid-response consistent with nodeless gap below $T_{c}\sim 30$ K., Comment: 4 pages 4 figures

The interplay between superconductivity and magnetism gives rise to many intriguing and exciting phenomena. In this Letter we report about a novel manifestation of this interplay: a temperature induced phase transition between different spontaneous vortex phases in lead superconducting films with embedded magnetic nanoparticles. Unlike common vortices in superconductors the vortex phase appears without any applied magnetic field. The vortices nucleate exclusively due to the stray field of the magnetic nanoparticles, which serve the dual role of providing the internal field and simultaneously acting as pinning centers. As in usual superconductors, one can move the spontaneous vortices with an applied electric current. Transport measurements reveal dynamical phase transitions that depend on temperature (T) and applied field (H) and support the obtained (H-T) phase diagram. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ is one of the many non conventional properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates. It is possible that the $H_{c2}(T)$ anomalies are due to the presence of inhomogeneities in the local charge carrier density $\rho$ of the $CuO_2$ planes. In order to study this point, we have prepared good quality samples of polycrystalline $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4}$ using the wet-chemical method, which has demonstrated to produce samples with a better cation distribution. In particular, we have studied the temperature dependence of the second critical field, $H_{c2}(T)$, through the magnetization measurements on two samples with opposite average carrier concentration ($\rho_m=x$) and nearly the same critical temperature, namely $\rho_m = 0.08$ (underdoped) and $\rho_m = 0.25$ (overdoped). The results close to $T_c$ do not follow the usual Ginzburg-Landau theory and are interpreted by a theory which takes into account the influence of the inhomogeneities., Comment: Published version

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) have been studied extensively in correlated electron systems. Characterization of magnetism at QPTs has, however, been limited by the volume-integrated feature of neutron and magnetization measurements and by pressure uncertainties in NMR studies using powderized specimens. Overcoming these limitations, we performed muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements which have a unique sensitivity to volume fractions of magnetically ordered and paramagnetic regions, and studied QPTs from itinerant heli/ferro magnet to paramagnet in MnSi (single-crystal; varying pressure) and (Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$)RuO$_{3}$ (ceramic specimens; varying $x$). Our results provide the first clear evidence that both cases are associated with spontaneous phase separation and suppression of dynamic critical behavior, revealed a slow but dynamic character of the ``partial order'' diffuse spin correlations in MnSi above the critical pressure, and, combined with other known results in heavy-fermion and cuprate systems, suggest a possibility that a majority of QPTs involve first-order transitions and/or phase separation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 21 authors, to appear in Nature Physics
