Abstract

Population aging is a global challenge, leading to increased demand for health care and social services for the elderly. Home Health Care (HHC) is a vital solution to serve this segment of the population. Given the increasing demand for HHC, it is essential to coordinate and regulate caregiver allocation efficiently. This is crucial for both budget-optimized planning and ensuring the delivery of high-quality care. This research addresses a fundamental question in home health agencies (HHAs): "How can caregiver allocation be optimized, especially when caregivers prefer flexibility in their visit sequences?". While earlier studies proposed rigid visiting sequences, our study introduces a decision support framework that allocates caregivers through a hybrid method that considers the flexibility in visiting sequences and aims to reduce travel mileage, increase the number of visits per planning period, and maintain the continuity of care; a critical metric for patient satisfaction. Utilizing data from an HHA in Tennessee, United States, our approach led to an impressive reduction in average travel mileage (up to 42%, depending on discipline) without imposing restrictions on caregivers. 9. Designing a framework for managing municipal waste through utilising WtE conversion technology: a case study

Abstract

Municipal solid waste management has always been an inevitable challenge for governments to overcome. This study proposed a new framework for managing waste by exploiting it as an endless resource for generating energy. The suggested framework establishes a comprehensive waste management plan in two stages. The first stage determines the optimum waste-to-energy (WtE) technology based on key criteria by employing TOPSIS. These criteria are not restricted to sustainable dimensions and consider technical dimensions as well. The second stage designs a supply chain structure based on the installation of a WtE power plant, with the goal of maximising profit while minimising CO2emissions. The proposed adaptive model allows the decision-maker to choose a WtE technology in the first stage and accordingly outline the supply chain structure. A municipal solid waste management case study provided insights into how the proposed framework could help decision-makers create a better environment.

12. A business transition model for sustianability-oriented industrial innovation and feedback on employment, inequality and inflation

Abstract

This paper presents the IN4.0-SD, a novel system dynamics model to capture the dynamic interplay of industrial innovation, inequality, and inflation. The IN4.0-SD is a closed system economic model composed of three agents: traditional factory, licence-business, and household. Licence-business and traditional factory are both assumed to supply one product to the economy and fundamentally differ among each other in their business model. While the traditional factory produces and sells capital goods making revenue out of sales, licence-business detaches the concept of production from sales moving toward an intangible economy, charging for a fee licence of their tools that can be distributed via a network economy. Licence-business is assumed to be a key driver for change in the assets structure in both the traditional and licence-business companies, both in terms of productivity, efficiency, and labour requirement for operations. Simulations show the level of flexibility of the model in addressing a variety of scenarios, playing at the threshold of technology development, inequality rise, massive unemployment and providing an archetype for sustainability type models. The model can provide a good base when applied to sustainability type scenarios that deal with energy transitions, climate change mitigation, and socio-technical transformations.

Abstract

Nowadays, with the advent of powerful statistical techniques and neural networks, predictive models of distribution have been rapidly developed in ecology. This study was carried out to model distribution of aphid,Rhopalosiphum padi,using MLP neural networks combined with Particle Swarm Optimization in wheat fields of Badjgah area, Fars province. Population data of the pest was obtained by sampling at 100 locations across wheat fields during 2013. For evaluation the capability of neural networks used in dispersal prediction, statistical comparison of parameters such as mean, variance, statistical distribution of spatial predicted values by neural network and their actual values, were conducted. Results showed that there were not significant differences between variance, mean and statistical distribution of actual and predicted values in training and test phases of neural network combined Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. Our map showed a patchy pest distribution offers large potential for using site-specific pest control on this field.

21. Pricing and inventory policy for non-instantaneous deteriorating items in vendor-managed inventory systems: a Stackelberg game theory approach

Abstract

Recent improvements in technologies highlight the importance of life-cycle management in the supply chain. This is more important when dealing with non-instantaneous deteriorating items due to the fact that these goods begin losing their marginal values once they are stored as inventories in the warehouses. In this regard, an accurate inventory policy should be taken into account for this type of deterioration. Considering different aspects of the supply chain, many assumptions have been made in the literature for inventory policies of non-instantaneous deteriorating items. Many of these simplifying assumptions are used in order to avoid the complexity of formulations and mathematical modelling. However, in this paper, a thorough and comprehensive model based on the Stackelberg game is proposed in order to consider a two-echelon supply chain with uncertain demand that is dependent upon price and time. Furthermore, a price-discount strategy is applied within the deterioration period as a persuasion strategy to increase customer demand and reduce deterioration costs. The different relationships between inventory parameters and variables are investigated by a precise sensitivity analysis, and the robustness of the presented results is confirmed. The results suggest the appropriate time for the beginning of a discount strategy and the amount of discount.

Abstract

The daily susceptibility rhythm of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, to diazinon and the corresponding changes in the activity of three xenobiotic detoxifying enzymes--cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450), glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), and esterases--were investigated. Bioassays were conducted to estimate the median lethal doses (LD50) of diazinon at six different zeitgeber times (ZT0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20) under constant light (LL) and lighting conditions of 16 h of light and 8 h of darkness (LD). The results showed that the highest susceptibility occurred at the onset of night (ZT16) and 4 h before this time point (ZT12) under the LD condition. The endogenous rhythmicity of susceptibility was ensured, as the highest susceptibility occurred at the same time under the LL condition. The circadian changes in susceptibility to diazinon were almost coincident with changes in esterase and GSTs activity, but not in P450 activity. We also found rhythmic changes in energy components of whole-body aphids, with similar patterns of circadian changes of proteins, lipids, and soluble carbohydrates, but not glycogen, under LL and LD conditions. These photoperiod conditions (LD and LL) showed different fluctuation in trends of energy resources and of course, different quantities. Our study represents the first report of circadian control of insecticide susceptibility in aphids and provides insights into more efficient control of these pests by unveiling the times of day during which aphids are more susceptible to insecticides with attention to endogenous physiological phenomena. Abstract

Pistachio fruit hull borer,Arimania komaroffiRagonot (Lep.: Pyralidae), is one the most important pests of pistachio in Iran. The larvae spin web as well as bore into young fruits, and the infested fruits fall off the trees. The second-generation adult moths appear in August and September, and their offspring feed on the fruit hull. Results indicated the presence of ?-amylase, ?-glucosidase, ?-glucosidase, ?-galactosidase, ?-galactosidase and some proteases in the digestive tract of the pest. Highest activities of ?-amylase, ?-glucosidase, ?-glucosidase, ?-galactosidase and ?-galactosidase were at pH 10, 7, 7, 6 and pH 6, respectively. Highest activities of trypsin, chymotrypsin and elastase of larval midgut were at pH 11. Zymogram analysis of ?-amylase, ?-glucosidase, ?-glucosidase, tryptic, chymotryptic and elastase using native-PAGE revealed 1, 1, 2, 3, 3 and 2 bands of activity respectively, inA. komaroffi. One band was disappeared in the presence of the inhibitor TLCK, but no further inhibition by the inhibitors TPCK was observed. The results can be of help for designing new strategies for controlling the pistachio fruit hull borer based on natural proteases and carbohydrase inhibitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Fifth instars of the pistachio green stink bug, Brachynema germari, were subjected to different concentrations of a juvenoid, pyriproxyfen, and its biological effects were assessed. The treated fifth instars showed different abnormalities when metamorphosed to the adults. Morphological effects were classified as died nymph 5, nymph 6 (additional instar), nymphoid, adultoid and abnormal adult. Effective doses of 50% (ED50) for 1-2- and 3-4-days old fifth instars were significantly different from 7-8-days old fifth instars. Survival and time needed to begin metamorphosis was also different in treated insects. There was a significant decrease in longevity of the adults and egg hatching. In general, it can be concluded that B. germari as an pentatomid important pest shows highest sensitivity to a juvenoid at early of the last instar which can be considered in integrated pest management program when a juvenile hormone agonist is a candidate. 27. Preventive Effect of Garlic Juice on Renal Reperfusion Injury.

Abstract

Introduction. Renal reperfusion injury is associated with increased mortality and morbidity due to acute kidney failure. Oxidative stress induced with renal reperfusion affects glomeruli and tubular epithelium through reactive oxygen species; therefore, the use of medicinal plants appears rational for improvement of reperfusion effects. The aim of present study was to examine the preventive effect of garlic juice (Allium sativum) on renal reperfusion injury in rats. Materials and Methods. A total of 30 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: control, garlic, sham (right nephrectomy), reperfusion, and reperfusion + garlic groups. After right nephrectomy, renal ischemia and reperfusion were induced. At the end of the experiment, all rats were killed and kidney function tests and histopathological examination were performed. Results. Reperfusion increased serum urea and fractional excretion of sodium levels, while it decreased urine potassium levels and creatinine clearance. However, garlic juice significantly decreased serum urea levels in the reperfusion + garlic group compared with the reperfusion group (P < .001). Preteatment with garlic juice also resulted in significant increase in urine potassium (P = .03) compared to reperfusion. Fractional excretion of sodium and creatinine clearance were also improved. On histological examination, rats pretreated with garlic juice had nearly normal morphology. Conclusions. The results of this study showed that garlic juice significantly prevented renal reperfusion-induced functional and histological injuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
