We argue that topological operators for continuous symmetries written in terms of currents need regularization, which effectively gives them a small but finite width. The regulated operator is a finite tension object which fluctuates. In the zero-width limit these fluctuations freeze, recovering the properties of a topological operator. We study the Symmetry Topological Field Theory in holography associated with 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(M)$. From this, all the bulk symmetry operators are computed and matched to various D-brane configurations. The fusion algebra of the operators emerges from brane dynamics. In particular, we show that the symmetry operators are purely determined from the center-of-mass modes of the branes. We identify the TQFT fusion coefficients with the relative motion of the branes. We study scalar perturbations of topological solitons, smooth horizonless solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory that correspond to coherent states of gravity via the dynamics of extra compact dimensions. First, we compute scalar quasinormal modes for topological stars that have a single unstable photon sphere, and we show that the spectrum is very similar to that of a black hole with the same photon sphere. Next, we study topological stars that have both a stable inner photon sphere and an unstable one. The first few quasinormal modes are localized around the inner photon sphere. The spectrum also contains ''black-hole like modes'' localized at the unstable outer photon sphere. The frequencies of these modes are similar to those of a black hole, but their imaginary part is smaller due to a cavity effect associated with the inner photon sphere. We provide the first example of a geometric transition that resolves the Schwarzschild black hole into a smooth microstructure in eleven-dimensional supergravity on a seven-torus. The geometry is indistinguishable from a Schwarzschild black hole dressed with a scalar field in four dimensions, referred to as a Schwarzschild scalarwall. In eleven dimensions, the scalar field arises as moduli of the torus. We consider the scattering of high energy and ultra relativistic spherically symmetric shells in asymptotically AdS$_D$ spacetimes. We analyze an exclusive amplitude where a single spherically symmetric shell goes in and a single one comes out, such that the two have different global symmetry charges of the effective gravity theory. We study photon geodesics in topological solitons that have the same asymptotic properties as Schwarzschild black holes. These are coherent states in string theory corresponding to pure deformations of spacetime through the dynamics of compact extra dimensions. We compare these solutions with Schwarzschild black holes by computing null geodesics, deriving Lyapunov exponents, and imaging their geometries as seen by a distant observer. We show that topological solitons are remarkably similar to black holes in apparent size and scattering properties, while being smooth and horizonless. Incoming photons experience very high redshift, inducing phenomenological horizon-like behaviors from the point of view of photon scattering. What follows is a broad-brush overview of the recent synergistic interactions between mathematics and theoretical physics of quantum field theory and string theory. The discussion is forward-looking, suggesting potentially useful and fruitful directions and problems, some old, some new, for further development of the subject. This paper is a much extended version of the Snowmass whitepaper on physical mathematics [1].

We construct large classes of non-BPS smooth horizonless geometries that are asymptotic to AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$T$^4$ in type IIB supergravity. These geometries are supported by electromagnetic flux corresponding to D1-D5 charges. We show that Einstein equations for systems with eight commuting Killing vectors decompose into a set of Ernst equations, thereby admitting an integrable structure. This feature, which can a priori be applied to other AdS$_D\times\mathcal{C}$ settings in supergravity, allows us to use solution-generating techniques associated with the Ernst formalism. We explicitly derive solutions by applying the charged Weyl formalism that we have previously developed. These are sourced internally by a chain of bolts that correspond to regions where the orbits of the commuting Killing vectors collapse smoothly. We show that these geometries can be interpreted as non-BPS T$^4$ and S$^3$ deformations on global AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$T$^4$ that are located at the center of AdS$_3$. These non-BPS deformations can be made arbitrarily small and should therefore correspond to non-supersymmetric operators in the D1-D5 CFT. We propose a systematic approach to deriving symmetry generators of Quantum Field Theories in holography. Central to this are the Gauss law constraints in the Hamiltonian quantization of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs), which are obtained from supergravity. In turn we realize the symmetry generators from world-volume theories of D-branes in holography. Our main focus is on non-invertible symmetries, which have emerged in the past year as a new type of symmetry in $d\geq 4$ QFTs. We exemplify our proposal in the holographic confinement setup, dual to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super-Yang Mills. In the brane-picture, the fusion of non-invertible symmetries naturally arises from the Myers effect on D-branes. We present new families of $AdS_5$ solutions in M-theory preserving 4d ${\mathcal N = 2}$ supersymmetry. We perform a systematic analysis of holographic observables for these solutions, providing evidence for an interpretation in terms of 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of Argyres-Douglas type, realized in class $\mathcal S$ via a sphere with one irregular, and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions exhibit internal M5-brane sources that correspond to the irregular puncture. For a family of solutions, we identify explicitly the class $\mathcal S$ puncture data and perform a detailed match, including Higgs branch operators. We construct the first class of topological solitons in gravity that are supported by internal electromagnetic flux with vanishing net charges. The solutions are obtained in a six-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a three-form flux, and admit an uplift to type IIB supergravity on T$^4$. They are asymptotic to a torus fibration over four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. An interesting class corresponds to solitons with a BPS particle and its anti-BPS partner held apart by a vacuum bubble. In type IIB, they correspond to bound states of BPS and anti-BPS D1-D5 extremal black holes. These metrics are a particular limit of a larger class of axially symmetric metrics that we construct and that describe smooth horizonless topological solitons. They correspond to bound states of three non-BPS bubbles on a line. An important achievement is that the outer bubbles can carry arbitrary D1-D5 charges that we can tune to vanishing net charges. We discuss their properties and compare them to a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole of the same mass. We study the existence of smooth topological solitons and black strings as locally-stable saddles of the Euclidean gravitational action of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. These objects live in the Kaluza-Klein background of four dimensional Minkowski with an $S^1$. We compute the off-shell gravitational action in the canonical ensemble with fixed boundary data corresponding to the asymptotic radius of $S^1$, and to the electric and magnetic charges that label the solitons and black strings. We show that these objects are locally-stable in large sectors of the phase space with varying lifetime. Furthermore, we determine the globally-stable phases for different regimes of the boundary data, and show that there can be Hawking-Page transitions between the locally-stable phases of the topological solitons and black strings. This analysis demonstrates the existence of a large family of globally-stable smooth solitonic objects in gravity beyond supersymmetry, and presents a mechanism through which they can arise from the black strings., Comment: 26 pages plus appendices, 4 figures. We consider 4d field theories obtained by reducing the 6d (1,0) SCFT of $N$ M5-branes probing a $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ singularity on a Riemann surface with fluxes. We follow two different routes. On the one hand, we consider the integration of the anomaly polynomial of the parent 6d SCFT on the Riemann surface. On the other hand, we perform an anomaly inflow analysis directly from eleven dimensions, from a setup with M5-branes probing a resolved $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ singularity fibered over the Riemann surface. By comparing the 4d anomaly polynomials, we provide a characterization of a class of modes that decouple along the RG flow from six to four dimensions, for generic $N$, $k$, and genus. These modes are identified with the flip fields encountered in the Lagrangian descriptions of these 4d models, when they are available. We show that such fields couple to operators originating from M2-branes wrapping the resolution cycles. This provides a geometric origin of flip fields. They interpolate between the 6d theory in the UV, where the M2-brane operators are projected out, and the 4d theory in the IR, where these M2-brane operators are part of the spectrum., Comment: 33 pages plus appendices

We analyze the global symmetries and anomalies of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ field theories that arise from a stack of $N$ M5-branes probing a class of flux backgrounds. These backgrounds consist of a resolved $\mathbb{C}^2 / \mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity fibered over a smooth Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, supported by a non-trivial $G_4$-flux configuration labeled by a collection of $2(k-1)$ flux quanta, $\{N_i\}$. For $k=2$, this setup defines a non-trivial superconformal field theory (SCFT) in the IR, which is holographically dual to an explicit $AdS_5$ solution first described by Gauntlett, Martelli, Sparks, and Waldram. The generalization to $k \geq 3$ is hard to tackle directly within holography. Instead, in this paper we lay the groundwork for a systematic analysis of such a generalization by adopting anomaly inflow methods to identify continuous and discrete global symmetries of the 4d field theories. We also compute the 't Hooft anomalies for continuous symmetries at leading order in the limit of large $N$, $N_i$.

We construct a family of smooth charged bubbling solitons in $\mathbb{M}^4 \times$T$^2$, four-dimensional Minkowski with a two-torus. The solitons are characterized by a degeneration pattern of the torus along a line in $\mathbb{M}^4$ defining a chain of topological cycles. They live in the same parameter regime as non-BPS non-extremal four-dimensional black holes, and are ultra-compact with sizes ranging from miscroscopic to macroscopic scales. The six-dimensional framework can be embedded in type IIB supergravity where the solitons are identified with geometric transitions of non-BPS D1-D5-KKm bound states. Interestingly, the geometries admit a minimal surface that smoothly opens up to a bubbly end of space. Away from the solitons, the solutions are indistinguishable from a new class of singular geometries. By taking a limit of large number of bubbles, the soliton geometries can be matched arbitrarily close to the singular spacetimes. This provides the first classical resolution of a curvature singularity beyond the framework of supersymmetry and supergravity by blowing up topological cycles wrapped by fluxes at the vicinity of the singularity., Comment: 32 pages + appendix, 14 figures, v3: minor edits

We construct the first smooth bubbling geometries using the Weyl formalism. The solutions are obtained from Einstein theory coupled to a two-form gauge field in six dimensions with two compact directions. We classify the charged Weyl solutions in this framework. Smooth solutions consist of a chain of Kaluza-Klein bubbles that can be neutral or wrapped by electromagnetic fluxes, and are free of curvature and conical singularities. We discuss how such topological structures are prevented from gravitational collapse without struts. We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of $AdS_5$ and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting St\"uckelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large-$N$ 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality., Comment: 38 pages plus appendices; typos fixed

We present new $AdS_5$ solutions in 11d supergravity and identify them as the gravity duals of a class of 4d $\mathcal N = 2$ SCFTs of Argyres-Douglas type, engineered by a stack of M5-branes wrapped on a sphere with one irregular puncture and one regular puncture. We construct a family of non-supersymmetric extremal black holes and their horizonless microstate geometries in four dimensions. The black holes can have finite angular momentum and an arbitrary charge-to-mass ratio, unlike their supersymmetric cousins. These features make them and their microstate geometries astrophysically relevant. Thus, they provide interesting prototypes to study deviations from Kerr solutions caused by new horizon-scale physics. In this paper, we compute the gravitational multipole structure of these solutions and compare them to Kerr black holes. The multipoles of the black hole differ significantly from Kerr as they depend non-trivially on the charge-to-mass ratio. We construct smooth static bubble solutions, denoted as topological stars, in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theories which are asymptotic to $\mathbb{R}^{1,3}\times$S$^1$. The bubbles are supported by allowing electromagnetic fluxes to wrap smooth topological cycles. The solutions live in the same regime as non-extremal static charged black strings, that reduce to black holes in four dimensions. We generalize to multi-body configurations on a line by constructing closed-form generalized charged Weyl solutions in the same theory. We study smooth bubble spacetimes in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory that resemble four-dimensional magnetic black holes upon Kaluza-Klein reduction. We denote them as Topological Stars since they have topological cycles supported by magnetic flux. They can be macroscopically large compared to the size of the Kaluza-Klein circle and could describe qualitative properties of microstate geometries for astrophysical black holes. We analyze topological mass terms of BF type arising in supersymmetric M-theory compactifications to $AdS_5$. These describe spontaneously broken higher-form gauge symmetries in the bulk. Different choices of boundary conditions for the BF terms yield dual field theories with distinct global discrete symmetries. We discuss in detail these symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for 4d $\mathcal N = 1$ SCFTs arising from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface without punctures, including theories from M5-branes at a $\mathbb Z_2$ orbifold singularity. The anomaly polynomial is computed via inflow and contains background fields for discrete global 0-, 1-, and 2-form symmetries and continuous 0-form symmetries, as well as axionic background fields. We extend the anomaly inflow methods developed in M-theory to SCFTs engineered via D3-branes in type IIB. We show that the 't Hooft anomalies of such SCFTs can be computed systematically from their geometric definition. Our procedure is tested in several 4d examples and applied to 2d theories obtained by wrapping D3-branes on a Riemann surface. In particular, we show how to analyze half-BPS regular punctures for 4d $\mathcal N = 4$ SYM on a Riemann surface. We consider the 6d (1,0) SCFT on a stack of $N$ M5-branes probing a $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_2$ singularity. In particular, we study its compactifications to four dimensions on a smooth genus-$g$ Riemann surface with non-trivial flavor flux, yielding a family of 4d CFTs. By tracking the M-theory origin of the global symmetries of the 4d CFTs, we detect the emergence of an accidental symmetry and the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a $U(1)$ generator. These effects are visible from geometric considerations and not apparent from the point of view of the compactification of the 6d field theory. These phenomena leave an imprint on the 't Hooft anomaly polynomial of the 4d CFTs, which is obtained from recently developed anomaly inflow methods in M-theory. In the large-$N$ limit, we identify the gravity dual of the 4d setups to be a class of smooth $AdS_5$ solutions first discussed by Gauntlett-Martelli-Sparks-Waldram. Using our anomaly polynomial, we compute the conformal central charge and a non-Abelian flavor central charge at large $N$, finding agreement with the holographic predictions.

We describe a systematic way of computing the 't Hooft anomalies for continuous symmetries of Quantum Field Theories in even dimensions that can be geometrically engineered from M5-branes. Our approach is based on anomaly inflow, and characterizes the anomaly polynomial of the QFT in terms of the geometric definition of the field theory. In particular, when the QFT admits a holographic dual, the topological data of the solution is sufficient to compute the anomalies of the dual field theory, including finite terms in $N$. We use the classical double copy to identify a necessary condition for Maxwell theory sources to constitute single copies of Kerr-Schild solutions to Einstein's equations. In the case of four-dimensional Kerr-Schild spacetimes on Minkowski backgrounds, we extend this condition to a parameterization of the corresponding single copies. These are given by Li\'enard-Wiechert fields of charges on complex worldlines. This unifies the known instances of the Kerr-Schild double copy black holes on flat four-dimensional backgrounds into a single framework. We extend the well-known mapping between the easy-plane ferromagnet and electrostatics in $d=2$ spatial dimensions to dynamical and quantum phenomena in a $d=2+1$ spacetime. Ferromagnetic vortices behave like quantum particles with an electric charge equal to the vortex number and a magnetic flux equal to the transverse spin of the vortex core. We derive the anomaly polynomials of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories that are obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a Riemann surface with arbitrary regular punctures, using anomaly inflow in the corresponding M-theory setup. Our results match the known anomaly polynomials for the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ class $\mathcal{S}$ SCFTs. In our approach, the contributions to the 't Hooft anomalies due to boundary conditions at the punctures are determined entirely by $G_4$-flux in the 11d geometry. We present a first principles derivation of the anomaly polynomials of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ class $\mathcal{S}$ theories of type $A_{N-1}$ with arbitrary regular punctures, using anomaly inflow in the corresponding M-theory setup with $N$ M5-branes wrapping a punctured Riemann surface. We study the twisted compactifications of five-dimensional Seiberg SCFTs, with $SU_\mathcal{M}(2)\times E_{N_f+1}$ flavor symmetry, on a generic Riemann surface that preserves four supercharges. The five-dimensional SCFTs are obtained from the decoupling limit of $N$ D4-branes probing a geometry of $N_f<8$ D8-branes and an O8-plane. In addition to the R-symmetry, we can also twist the flavor symmetry by turning on background flux on the Riemann surface. In particular, in the string theory construction of the five-dimensional SCFTs, the background flux for the $SU_\mathcal{M}(2)$ has a geometric origin, similar to the topological twist of the R-symmetry. We argue that the resulting low-energy three-dimensional theories describe the dynamics on the world-volume of the $N$ D4-branes wrapped on the Riemann surface in the O8/D8 background. The Riemann surface can be described as a curve in a Calabi-Yau three-fold that is a sum of two line bundles over it. This allows for an explicit construction of $AdS_4$ solutions in massive IIA supergravity dual to the world-volume theories, thereby providing strong evidence that the three-dimensional SCFTs exist in the low-energy limit of the compactification of the five-dimensional SCFTs. We compute observables such as the free energy and the scaling dimensions of operators dual to D2-brane probes; these have non-trivial dependence on the twist parameter for the $U(1)$ in $SU_\mathcal{M}(2)$. The free energy exhibits the $N^{5/2}$ scaling that is emblematic of five-dimensional SCFTs.

The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. We study the 't Hooft anomalies of four-dimensional superconformal field theories that arise from M5-branes wrapped on a punctured Riemann surface. In general there are two independent contributions to the anomalies. There is a bulk term obtained by integrating the anomaly polynomial of the world-volume theory on the M5-branes over the Riemann surface; this contribution knows about the punctures only through its dependence on the Euler characteristic of the surface. The second set of contributions comes from local data at the punctures; these terms are independent from the bulk data of the surface. Using anomaly inflow in M-theory, we describe the general structure of the anomalies for cases when the four-dimensional theories preserve N=2 supersymmetry. We find AdS5 solutions holographically dual to compactifications of six-dimensional N=(1,0) supersymmetric field theories on Riemann surfaces with punctures. We simplify a previous analysis of supersymmetric AdS5 IIA solutions, and with a suitable Ansatz we find explicit solutions organized in three classes, where an O8--D8 stack, D6- and D4-branes are simultaneously present, localized and partially localized. The D4-branes are smeared over the Riemann surface and this is interpreted as the presence of a uniform distribution of punctures. For the first class we identify the corresponding six-dimensional theory as an E-string theory coupled to a quiver gauge theory. The second class of solutions lacks D6-branes and its central charge scales as $n^{5/2}$, suggesting a five-dimensional origin for the dual field theory. Compactifying N=(1,0) theories on a torus, with additional fluxes for global symmetries, we obtain N=1 supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. It is shown that for many choices of flux these models are toric quiver gauge theories with singlet fields. In particular we compare the anomalies deduced from the description of the six-dimensional theory and the anomalies of the quiver gauge theories. We describe the general BPS system that governs the gravity duals of N=(0,2) two-dimensional superconformal field theories in the low-energy limit of M5-branes on a four-manifold, M4. In order to preserve supersymmetry, we restrict to cases where the four-manifold is embedded in a Calabi-Yau fourfold that is a sum of two line bundles over M4. We further reduce the N=(0,2) system to describe the gravity duals of SCFTs with N=(0,4) and N=(2,2) supersymmetry. In the first case, the solutions fit in the larger class of AdS3xS2xCY3 solutions of M-theory dual to N=(0,4) SCFTs. In the case of the N=(2,2) theories, the near-horizon limit of M4 is necessarily a product of two constant curvature Riemann surfaces whose metrics are governed by a pair of Liouville equations., Comment: 22 pages + 15 pages in Appendix

We describe the gravity duals of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a punctured Riemann surface. The internal geometry, normal to the AdS5 factor, generically preserves two U(1)s, with generators (J+,J-), that are fibered over the Riemann surface. The metric is governed by a single potential that satisfies a version of the Monge-Ampere equation. The spectrum of N=1 punctures is given by the set of supersymmetric sources of the potential that are localized on the Riemann surface and lead to regular metrics near a puncture. We use this system to study a class of punctures where the geometry near the sources corresponds to M-theory description of D6-branes. These carry a natural (p,q) label associated to the circle dual to the killing vector (p J+ + q J-) which shrinks near the source. In the generic case the world volume of the D6-branes is AdS5 X S^2 and they locally preserve N=2 supersymmetry. When p=-q, the shrinking circle is dual to a flavor U(1). The metric in this case is non-degenerate only when there are co-dimension one sources, M9-branes, obtained by smearing M5-branes that wrap the AdS5 factor and the circle dual the superconformal R-symmetry. In the IIA limit, they can interpreted as D8-branes. The D6-branes are extended along the AdS5 and on cups that end on the co-dimension one branes. In the special case when the shrinking circle is dual to the R-symmetry, the D6-branes are extended along the AdS5 and wrap an auxiliary Riemann surface with an arbitrary genus. When the Riemann surface is compact with constant curvature, the system is governed by a Monge-Ampere equation., Comment: 35 pages
