SESAME and a consortium of five Helmholtz Centers are designing and installing a state-of-the-art soft X-Ray undulator beamline at the SESAME light source in Amman, Jordan. Funding is provided by the Helmholtz Association over a four year project cycle that started in January 2019. This is an interim report covering the first 36 months of the project where the construction and installation has been almost completed and commissioning and characterization of the beamline is about to start. Additionally, seminars, workshops, and a training program are part of the project aimed at establishing a broad user community.

The HESEB (Helmholtz-SESAME soft X-ray beamline) project is an initiative by the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) to implement a new beamline at SESAME for scientific applications using soft X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The beamline design, procurement, and construction are being carried out by a consortium of the HGF centers DESY, FZJ, HZB, HZDR and KIT in collaboration with SESAME. The new beamline will be available for the SESAME user community within the four year project duration. It will allow for a large number of top-class scientific applications and provide new cooperation potentials with German and international research groups. The beamline is based on a variable-polarization undulator and a plane-grating monochromator covering an energy range 80 - 2000 eV. The optical design and the technical specifications have been completed and a call for tender procedure is ongoing. It is expected that the beamline will see first light in summer 2021. During the course of the project, the main goals to be achieved are (i) the construction and commissioning of the beamline at SESAME with a chamber for cultural heritage applications using spatially resolved soft X-ray fluorescence, (ii) the leveraging of additional contributions from the SESAME member countries to promote the build-up of international user consortia and to secure funding for experimental endstations and additional instrumentation, (iii) the training of SESAME staff at participating Helmholtz centers to enable reliable operation of the beamline by local staff, and (iv) the fostering of the establishment of a broad user community of HESEB from the SESAME member states through training, workshops, and schools. The first soft X-ray HESEB science workshop will take place in Istanbul beginning of 2020.

A knowledge based approach towards developing a new generation of solar energy conversion devices requires a fast and direct feedback between sophisticated analytics and state of the art processing test facilities for all relevant material classes. A promising approach is the coupling of synchrotron based X ray characterization techniques, providing the unique possibility to map the electronic and chemical structure of thin layers and interface regions with relevant in system in situ sample preparation or in operando analysis capabilities in one dedicated laboratory. EMIL, the Energy Materials In situ Laboratory Berlin, is a unique facility at the BESSY II synchrotron light source. EMIL will be dedicated to the in system, in situ, and in operando X ray analysis of materials and devices for energy conversion and energy storage technologies including photovoltaic applications and photo electrochemical processes. EMIL comprises up to five experimental end stations, three of them can access X rays in an energy range of 80 eV 10 keV. For example, one key setup of EMIL combines a suite of advanced spectroscopic characterization tools with industry relevant deposition facilities in one integrated ultra high vacuum system. These deposition tools allow the growth of PV devices based on silicon, compound semiconductors, hybrid heterojunctions, and organo metal halide perovskites on up to 6 sized substrates. EMIL will serve as a research platform for national and international collaboration in the field of photovoltaic photocatalytic energy conversion and beyond. In this paper, we will provide an overview of the analytic and material capabilities at EMIL.

A common problem for elliptically polarizing undulators EPUs is that the magnetic forces give a mechanical deflection in the magnet holder construction when changing the undulator phase. Gluing horizontally and vertically magnetized blocks together can increase the mechanical stability of the magnet holders. The gluing process of pairs of magnetized magnet blocks is time consuming, expensive and difficult to carry out with high positional precision. A novel magnet production technique has been developed where un magnetized pairs of blocks are glued together before magnetization. The large number of parts, the time for assembly, and the cost of the EPU can be reduced with the novel magnet production technique. The novel magnet production method has been used for a 2.6 m long EPU of APPLE II type, which has been built in house at the MAX IV Laboratory. The frame for the EPU is made of cast iron in order to get a small mechanical deformation when changing phase in the inclined mode. The paper includes detailed descriptions of the novel magnet production technique, including measurements of the magnetization, and the new EPU

The Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin HZB builds a 2m long in vacuum Hall probe measuring bench for the characterization of several in vacuum cryogenic undulators currently under development. Aceurate local magnetic measurements need a positioning control of about 5 Jlll. Fabrication tolerances and potentially strong temperature gradients require an active correction of the Hall probe movement along a straight line. The HZBbench employs a system of Iaser interferometers and positionsensitive detectors, which are used in a feed back loop for the Hall probe position and orientation

The Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin and the Max Planck Society are going to build a new dedicated X ray beam line at the synchrotron light source BESSY II which will be used for analyzing materials for renewable energy generation. The new large scale project has been dubbed EMIL. In this document we present the modifications to the machine optics and to what extent these changes affect the performance of BESSY II

After a few historic remarks on magnetic materials we introduce the basic definitions related to permanent magnets. The magnetic properties of the most common materials are reviewed and the production processes are described. Measurement techniques for the characterization of macroscopic and microscopic properties of permanent magnets are presented. Field simulation techniques for permanent magnet devices are discussed. Today, permanent magnets are used in many fields. The interaction of an insertion device with the electron beam in a storage ring is discussed. The radiation property including brightness, ux and polarization of an ideal and real planar and helical / elliptical device is described. The magnet design of planar, helical, quasiperiodic devices and of devices with a reduced on axis power density are resumed.
