1. Efficient Compressed Sensing Based Image Coding by Using Gray Transformation

Abstract

In recent years, compressed sensing (CS) based image coding has become a hot topic in image processing field. However, since the bit depth required for encoding each CS sample is too large, the compression performance of this paradigm is unattractive. To address this issue, a novel CS-based image coding system by using gray transformation is proposed. In the proposed system, we use a gray transformation to preprocess the original image firstly and then use CS to sample the transformed image. Since gray transformation makes the probability distribution of CS samples centralized, the bit depth required for encoding each CS sample is reduced significantly. Consequently, the proposed system can considerably improve the compression performance of CS-based image coding. Simulation results show that the proposed system outperforms the traditional one without using gray transformation in terms of compression performance., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The high strength and stiffness-to-weight ratios of structural steel often result in relatively slender members and systems, which are governed to a great extent by stability limit states. However, predicting the stability of slender structures is difficult due to various inherent uncertainties in material and geometry. Generally, structural and member stabilities are nonlinear problems that cannot be directly evaluated based on the section strength using conventional analysis method. Nonlinear behaviors are basically categorized as materially and geometrically nonlinear, which can be observed at the cross-sectional, member, and frame levels. To provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state-of-the-art non-linear behavior and design of steel structures and to identify key areas for future research and development, this paper presents a review on the materially and geometrically nonlinear effects of steel structures. A discussion of the effects of material yielding accentuated by the presence of residual stresses, initial imperfections, and end conditions will be conducted. The stiffness reduction due to second-order effects and material yielding will be illustrated. Moreover, current and emerging design approaches that consider nonlinear responses will also be reviewed and evaluated. Lastly, with the development of modern flexible and complex steel structures, which sometimes violate fundamental assumptions of the current stability design method, the application of advanced analysis and design methods will be explored.

Abstract

Management of obesity has become a prevalent strategy for preventing the diseases closely integrated with excess body weight such as diabetes over the last half century. Searching for therapeutic agents acting on oxidative stress, adipogenesis and insulin resistance is considered as an efficient approach to control obesity-related diseases. The present study was designed to examine the in vitro and in vivo effects of dihydro-resveratrol (DR2), a naturally occurring compound from Dendrobium medicinal plants, on oxidative stress aggravation, adipogenesis, lipogenesis and insulin sensitivity. We utilized an in vitro 3T3-L1 adipocyte differentiation model to show that DR2 could reduce pre-adipocyte maturation by activation of AMPK/SIRT1 signaling proteins to inhibit p38MAPK proteins. With the use of in vitro oxidative-stress-induced hepatocytes and myoblasts models, DR2 was also shown to be able to reduce oxidative stress aggravation through mediation of Nrf2-related antioxidative cascade, reduce intracellular lipid accumulation through phosphorylation of ACC protein, reduce lipid peroxidation in hepatocytes and promote insulin sensitivity via activation of AKT protein in the insulin-resistant HepG2 cells and C2C12 cells. The effects of DR2 on adipogenesis, lipid accumulation, insulin resistance and blood glucose clearance were further demonstrated in the high-fat diet-induced obesity mouse model. Our in vitro and in vivo studies determined that DR2 could contain therapeutic potential for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

The primary aim of the thesis is to provide a comprehensive investigation of the osmotic dehydration processes in plant tissue. Effort has been concentrated on the modelling for simulating the processes. Two mathematical models for simulating the mass transfer during osmotic dehydration processes in plant tissues are developed and verified using existing experimental data. Both models are based on the mechanism of diffusion and convection of any mobile material that can transport in plant tissues. The mass balance equation for the transport of each constituent is established separately for intracellular and extra-cellular volumes with taking into account the mass transfer across the cell membrane the intracellular and extra-cellular volumes and the shrinkage of the whole tissue. The contribution from turgor pressure is considered in both models. Model two uses Darcy’s law to build the relation between shrinkage velocity and hydrostatic pressure in each volume because the plant tissue can be considered as the porous medium. Moreover, it has been extended to solve the multi-dimensional problems. A lot of efforts have been made to the parameter study and the sensitivity analyses. The parameters investigated including the concentration of the osmotic solution, diffusion coefficient, permeability of the cell membrane, elastic modulus of the cell wall, critical cell volume etc. The models allow us to quantitatively simulate the time evolution of intracellular and extra-cellular volumes as well as the time evolution of concentrations in each cross-section.

42. Toward Dynamic Pricing for City-Wide Crowdsourced Instant Delivery Services

Abstract

The booming crowdsourced delivery leverages networks of local, part time couriers to meet growing customer demands for increasingly speedy shipping. By conducting city-wide low-cost delivery networks, crowd-sourced enabled instant delivery platforms have fought to figure out a way to offer instant shipping at low price. Nevertheless, limited ubiquitous computing infrastructures impede the discovery of equilibrium between cost reduction and sufficient shipping capacity. In this article, we present our endeavor towards understanding and designing a dynamic pricing framework based on a large-scale food-delivery platform. To reduce delivery fees in capacity overload regions and resolve the decline of service quality caused by insufficient shipping capacity, we address the challenge of quantifying the inter-regional shipping capacity disparities by accordingly applying a variety of techniques, including cooperative game theory, probability analysis and address entity recognition. In particular, we provide an $O(n^{2})$O(n2) algorithm for the cooperative game based cost allocation, of which the exponential computational complexity $O(n^{2}2^{n})$O(n22n) is generally considered a major challenge in real-world applications. City-wide experiments in Nanjing and Shenzhen illustrate that we achieve a 10% decrease in delivery fees under overload shipping capacity and a 3% increase in completion rates in customer locations with poor service quality.
