Search

Chiral superconductivity exhibits the formation of novel electron pairs that breaks the time-reversal symmetry and has been actively studied in various quantum materials in recent years. However, despite its potential to provide definitive information, effects of disorder in the crystal structure on the chiral superconductivity has not yet been clarified, and therefore the investigation using a solid-solution system is desirable. We report muon-spin-relaxation (muSR) results of layered pnictide BaPtAs_1-x_Sb_x_ with a honeycomb network composed of Pt and (As, Sb). We observed an increase of the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate in the superconducting (SC) state at the Sb end of x=1.0, suggesting the occurrence of spontaneous magnetic field due to the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the SC state. On the other hand, spontaneous magnetic field was almost and completely suppressed for the As-Sb mixed samples of x=0.9 and 0.2, respectively, suggesting that the time-reversal symmetry breaking SC state in x=1.0 is sensitive to disorder. The magnetic penetration depth estimated from transverse-field muSR measurements at x=1.0 and 0.2 behaved like weak-coupling s-wave superconductivity. These seemingly incompatible zero-field and transverse-field muSR results of BaPtAs_1-x_Sb_x_ with x=1.0 could be understood in terms of chiral d-wave superconductivity with point nodes on the three-dimensional Fermi surface., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We present a thorough experimental investigation on single crystals of the rare-earth based frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$, a purported spin-liquid candidate on the breathing kagome lattice. This material possesses a disordered ground state with an unusual excitation spectrum involving a coexistence of sharp spin-waves and broad continuum excitations. Nevertheless, we show through a combination of thermodynamic, magnetometric and spectroscopic probes with detailed theoretical modeling that it should be understood in a completely different framework. The crystal field splits the lowest quasi-doublet states into two singlets moderately coupled through frustrated superexchange, resulting in a simple effective Hamiltonian of an Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. While our neutron spectroscopy data do point to significant correlations within the kagome planes, the dominant interactions are out-of-plane, forming frustrated triangular spin-tubes through two competing ferro-antiferromagnetic bonds. The resulting ground state is a simple quantum paramagnet, but with significant modifications to both thermodynamic and dynamic properties due to small perturbations to the transverse field Ising model in the form of hyperfine enhanced nuclear moments and weak structural disorder., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, with x = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO_2 plane. A sixfold increase of the 3-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature T_c and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found at elevated temperatures, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal T_c. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

We present a detailed study of the magnetic properties of weakly ferromagnetic/quantum critical Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$ using muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR). By means of an angular dependent study of the muon spin rotation signal in applied magnetic fields on a single crystal in the paramagnetic state we establish the muon stopping site in the crystallographic lattice of NbFe$_2$. With this knowledge we develop models to describe the muon spin rotation and relaxation signals in the weakly ferromagnetic, spin density wave and quantum critical phases of Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$ and fit the corresponding experimental data. In particular, we quantify the $\mu$SR response for quantum critical behavior in Nb$_{1.0117}$Fe$_{1.9883}$ and extract the influence of residual weak structural disorder. From our analysis, Nb$_{1-y}$Fe$_{2+y}$ emerges to be uniquely suited to study quantum criticality close to weak itinerant ferromagnetic order.

The single ion properties of the zig-zag chain compound SrTm$_2$O$_4$ have been investigated using heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, and polarized muon spectroscopy. Two crystal field models are employed to estimate the single ion properties; a Density Function Theory based model and an effective charge model based on the Hutchings point charge model. The latter describes our experimental results well. This model estimates an easy-axis anisotropy for one of the Tm$^{3+}$ sites and an easy-plane anisotropy for the second site. It also predicts a mixed ground state with dominating $J = 0$ characteristics for both sites. Additionally, muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu^+$SR) spectra reveal oscillations, typically a sign of long-range magnetic order. However, the temperature dependence of the precession frequency and the relaxation rates indicate that the system is in an extended critical regime and the observed relaxation is actually dynamic.

Topological superconductors (SCs) are novel phases of matter with nontrivial bulk topology. They host at their boundaries and vortex cores zero-energy Majorana bound states, potentially useful in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Chiral SCs are particular examples of topological SCs with finite angular momentum Cooper pairs circulating around a unique chiral axis, thus spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS). They are rather scarce and usually feature triplet pairing: best studied examples in bulk materials are UPt3 and Sr2RuO4 proposed to be f-wave and p-wave SCs respectively, although many open questions still remain. Chiral triplet SCs are, however, topologically fragile with the gapless Majorana modes weakly protected against symmetry preserving perturbations in contrast to chiral singlet SCs. Using muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements, here we report that the weakly correlated pnictide compound LaPt3P has the two key features of a chiral SC: spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state indicating broken TRS and low temperature linear behaviour in the superfluid density indicating line nodes in the order parameter. Using symmetry analysis, first principles band structure calculation and mean-field theory, we unambiguously establish that the superconducting ground state of LaPt3P is chiral d-wave singlet., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

The superconducting gap structure of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) candidate ZrRuAs ($T^{\rm on}_{\rm c}$ = 7.9(1) K) with a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure has been investigated using muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements in transverse-field (TF) and zero-field (ZF) geometries. We also present the results of magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements on ZrRuAs, which reveal bulk superconductivity below 7.9~K. The temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth obtained from the analysis of the TF-$\mu$SR spectra below $T_{\rm c}$ is well described by an isotropic $s$-wave gap model as also inferred from an analysis of the heat capacity in the superconducting state. ZF $\mu$SR data do not show any significant change in the muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition temperature indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of this material., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models., Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters (2020)

By employing a series of experimental techniques, we provide clear evidence that CaPtAs represents a rare example of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor which simultaneously exhibits nodes in the superconducting gap and broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in its superconducting state (below $T_c$ $\approx$ 1.5 K). Unlike in fully-gapped superconductors, the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ does not saturate at low temperatures, but instead it shows a $T^2$-dependence, characteristic of gap nodes. Both the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat are best described by a two-gap model comprising of a nodeless gap and a gap with nodes, rather than by single-band models. At the same time, zero-field muon-spin spectra exhibit increased relaxation rates below the onset of superconductivity, implying that TRS is broken in the superconducting state of CaPtAs, hence indicating its unconventional nature. Our observations suggest CaPtAs to be a new remarkable material which links two apparently disparate classes, that of TRS-breaking correlated magnetic superconductors with nodal gaps and the weakly-correlated noncentrosymmetric superconductors with broken TRS, normally exhibiting only a fully-gapped behavior., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Phys. We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

The Kondo effect, an eminent manifestation of many-body physics in condensed matter, is traditionally explained as exchange scattering of conduction electrons on a spinful impurity in a metal. The resulting screening of the impurity's local moment by the electron Fermi sea is characterized by a Kondo temperature $T_K$, below which the system enters a non-perturbative strongly-coupled regime. In recent years, this effect has found its realizations beyond the bulk-metal paradigm in many other itinerant-electron systems, such as quantum dots in semiconductor heterostructures and in nanomaterials, quantum point contacts, and graphene. Here we report on the first experimental observation of the Kondo screening by chargeless quasiparticles. This occurs in a charge-insulating quantum spin liquid, where spinon excitations forming a Fermi surface take the role of conduction electrons. The observed impurity behaviour therefore bears a strong resemblance to the conventional case in a metal. The discovered spinon-based Kondo effect provides a prominent platform for characterising and possibly manipulating enigmatic host spin liquids., Comment: accepted for publication in Nature Physics

We have investigated the thermodynamic and local magnetic properties of the Mott insulating system Ag$_{3}$LiRu$_{2}$O$_{6}$ containing Ru$^{4+}$ (4$d$$^{4}$) for novel magnetism. The material crystallizes in a monoclinic $C2/m$ structure with RuO$_{6}$ octahedra forming an edge-shared two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with limited stacking order along the $c$-direction. The large negative Curie-Weiss temperature ($\theta_{CW}$ = -57 K) suggests antiferromagnetic interactions among Ru$^{4+}$ ions though magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity show no indication of magnetic long-range order down to 1.8 K and 0.4 K, respectively. $^{7}$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift follows the bulk susceptibility between 120-300 K and levels off below 120 K. Together with a power-law behavior in the temperature dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate between 0.2 and 2 K, it suggest dynamic spin correlations with gapless excitations. Electronic structure calculations suggest an $S = 1$ description of the Ru-moments and the possible importance of further neighbour interactions as also bi-quadratic and ring-exchange terms in determining the magnetic properties. Analysis of our $\mu$SR data indicates spin freezing below 5 K but the spins remain on the borderline between static and dynamic magnetism even at 20 mK., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures. accepted in Phys. The superconducting behavior of the topological semimetal CaSn$_{3}$ was investigated by means of magnetotransport and muon spectroscopy $\mu$SR measurements, both providing strong evidence of nematic behavior. Magnetotransport detects an anisotropic upper critical field, characterized by a twofold symmetry about $C_{4}$ axis, thus breaking the rotational symmetry of the underlying cubic lattice. Transverse-field $\mu$SR data support such picture, with the muon depolarization rate depending strongly on the magnetic field direction, here applied along the [110] or [001] crystal directions. In the former case, the absence of any additional muon depolarization suggests an unconventional vortex lattice. In the latter case, a vortex lattice encompassing a sample volume of at least 52% indicates the bulk nature of CaSn$_{3}$ superconductivity. The resulting superfluid density in the (001) planes shows a gapped low-temperature behavior, with a superconducting gap value $\Delta(0)\simeq 0.61(7)$ meV. Additional zero-field $\mu$SR results indicate that the superconducting state is time-reversal-invariant. This fact and the breaking of rotational symmetry in a fully-gapped superconductor are consistent with an unconventional pairing state in a multi-dimensional representation, thus making CaSn$_{3}$ an important example of nematic superconductor., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table

We report the discovery of Zr$_3$Ir as a new type of unconventional noncentrosymmetric superconductor (with $T_c = 2.3$ K), here investigated mostly via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) techniques. Its superconductivity was characterized using magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The low-temperature superfluid density, determined via transverse-field $\mu$SR and electronic specific heat, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state. The spontaneous magnetic fields, revealed by zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_c$, indicate the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in Zr$_3$Ir and, hence, the unconventional nature of its superconductivity. By using symmetry arguments and electronic-structure calculations we obtain a superconducting order parameter that is fully compatible with the experimental observations. To trace the origin of time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) in Re-based superconductors, we performed comparative muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) studies of superconducting noncentrosymmetric Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$ ($T_c = 8.8$ K) and centrosymmetric Re ($T_c = 2.7$ K). In Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$, the low temperature superfluid density and the electronic specific heat evidence a fully-gapped superconducting state, whose enhanced gap magnitude and specific-heat discontinuity suggest a moderately strong electron-phonon coupling. In both Re$_{0.82}$Nb$_{0.18}$ and pure Re, the spontaneous magnetic fields revealed by zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_c$ indicate time-reversal symmetry breaking and thus unconventional superconductivity. The concomitant occurrence of TRSB in centrosymmetric Re and noncentrosymmetric Re$T$ ($T$ = transition metal), yet its preservation in the isostructural noncentrosymmetric superconductors Mg$_{10}$Ir$_{19}$B$_{16}$ and Nb$_{0.5}$Os$_{0.5}$, strongly suggests that the local electronic structure of Re is crucial for understanding the TRSB superconducting state in Re and Re$T$. We present a successful synthesis method of the series Ga$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OD)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ with substitutions up to $x=0.8$. The compound remains a frustrated kagome system with an insulating ground state similar to herbertsmithite for these substitutions, as the additional charge of Ga$^{3+}$ is most likely bound to additional OH$^{-}$ and Cl$^{-}$. Besides infrared measurements, we present magnetic and specific-heat data down to 2 K for selected samples with $0\leq x\leq0.8$. With increasing $x$ the long-range magnetic order is suppressed, similar to what was observed in the series Zn$_{x}$Cu$_{4-x}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$, indicating that Ga goes predominantly to the inter-plane position of the layered crystal structure. The reduction of the frozen magnetic fraction with increasing substitution was followed by $\mu$SR measurements. $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was applied as a local probe for Ga induced disorder. One well resolved Ga NMR line of moderate width is found for each isotope across the phase diagram which indicates a rather homogeneous distribution of the Ga isotopes on a single site in the lattice., Comment: submitted to physica status solidi

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo$_3$Rh$_2$N, with $T_c = 4.6$ K, adopts a $\beta$-Mn-type structure (space group $P$4$_1$32), similar to that of Mo$_3$Al$_2$C. Its bulk superconductivity was characterized by magnetization and heat-capacity measurements, while its microscopic electronic properties were investigated by means of muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR). The low-temperature superfluid density, measured via transverse-field (TF)-$\mu$SR, evidences a fully-gapped superconducting state with $\Delta_0 = 1.73 k_\mathrm{B}T_c$, very close to 1.76 $k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ - the BCS gap value for the weak coupling case, and a magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_0 = 586$ nm. The absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below the onset of superconductivity, as determined by zero-field (ZF)-$\mu$SR measurements, hints at a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. Magnetic frustration and disorder are key ingredients to prevent the onset of magnetic order. In the disordered hexagonal double perovskite BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, Mn$^{4+}$ cations, with $S=3/2$ spins, can either form highly correlated states of magnetic trimers or dimers or remain as weakly interacting orphan spins. At low temperature ($T$), the dimer response is negligible, and magnetism is dominated by the trimers and orphans. To explore the role of magnetic frustration, disorder and possibly of quantum fluctuations, the low-$T$ magnetic properties of the remaining magnetic degrees of freedom of BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$ are investigated. Heat-capacity data and magnetic susceptibility display no evidence for a phase transition to a magnetically ordered phase but indicate the formation of a correlated spin state. The low-temperature spin dynamics of this state is then explored by $\mu$SR experiments. The zero field $\mu^{+}$ relaxation rate data show no static magnetism down to $T=19$ mK and longitudinal field experiments support as well that dynamic magnetism persists at low $T$. Our results are interpreted in terms of a spin glass state which stems from a disordered lattice of orphans spins and trimers. A spin liquid state in BaTi$_{1/2}$Mn$_{1/2}$O$_{3}$, however, is not excluded and is also discussed., Comment: Main Text: 6 pages, 4 figures; Supplemental: 11 pages, 7 figures

A quantum spin liquid state has long been predicted to arise in spin-1/2 Heisenberg square-lattice antiferromagnets at the boundary region between N\'eel (nearest-neighbor interaction dominates) and columnar (next-nearest-neighbor dominates) antiferromagnetic order. However, there are no known compounds in this region. Here we use $d^{10}$-$d^0$ cation mixing to tune the magnetic interactions on the square lattice while simultaneously introducing disorder. We find spin-liquid-like behavior in the double perovskite Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, where the isostructural end phases Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are N\'eel and columnar type antiferromagnets, respectively. We show that magnetism in Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ is entirely dynamic down to 19 mK. Additionally, we observe at low temperatures for Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$, similar to several spin liquid candidates, a plateau in muon spin relaxation rate and a strong $T$-linear dependence in specific heat. Our observations for Sr$_2$Cu(Te$_{0.5}$W$_{0.5}$)O$_6$ highlight the role of disorder in addition to magnetic frustration in spin liquid physics., Comment: 19+4 pages, 4+3 figures. We report results of a muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) study of YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, a quasi-2D nearly-ferromagnetic metal in which unconventional quantum critical behavior is observed. No static Fe$^{2+}$ magnetism, with or without long-range order, is found down to 19~mK\@. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate~$\lambda$ exhibits power-law divergences in temperature and magnetic field, the latter for fields that are too weak to affect the electronic spin dynamics directly. We attribute this to the proportionality of $\lambda(\omega_\mu,T)$ to the dynamic structure factor~$S(\omega_\mu,T)$, where $\omega_\mu \approx 10^5$--$10^7~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ is the muon Zeeman frequency. These results suggest critical divergences of $S(\omega_\mu,T)$ in both temperature and frequency. Power-law scaling and a 2D dissipative quantum XY (2D-DQXY) model both yield forms for $S(\omega,T)$ that agree with neutron scattering data ($\omega \approx 10^{12}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$). Extrapolation to $\mu$SR frequencies agrees semi-quantitatively with the observed temperature dependence of $\lambda(\omega_\mu,T)$, but predicts frequency independence for $\omega_\mu \ll T$ in extreme disagreement with experiment. We conclude that the quantum critical spin dynamics of YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ are not well understood at low frequencies., Comment: 5 figures

The noncentrosymmetric superconductor Re$_{24}$Ti$_{5}$, a time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking candidate with $T_c = 6$\,K, was studied by means of muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) and tunnel-diode oscillator (TDO) techniques. At a macroscopic level, its bulk superconductivity was investigated via electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The low-temperature penetration depth, superfluid density and electronic heat capacity all evidence an $s$-wave coupling with an enhanced superconducting gap. The spontaneous magnetic fields revealed by zero-field $\mu$SR below $T_c$ indicate a time-reversal symmetry breaking and thus the unconventional nature of superconductivity in Re$_{24}$Ti$_{5}$. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are interesting for understanding fundamental physics of two-dimensional materials (2D) as well as for many emerging technologies, including spin electronics. Here, we report the discovery of long-range magnetic order below TM = 40 K and 100 K in bulk semiconducting TMDs 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2, respectively, by means of muon spin-rotation (muSR), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The muon spin rotation measurements show the presence of a large and homogeneous internal magnetic fields at low temperatures in both compounds indicative of long-range magnetic order. DFT calculations show that this magnetism is promoted by the presence of defects in the crystal. The STM measurements show that the vast majority of defects in these materials are metal vacancies and chalcogen-metal antisites which are randomly distributed in the lattice at the sub-percent level. DFT indicates that the antisite defects are magnetic with a magnetic moment in the range of 0.9-2.8 mu_B. Further, we find that the magnetic order stabilized in 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2 is highly sensitive to hydrostatic pressure. These observations establish 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2 as a new class of magnetic semiconductors and opens a path to studying the interplay of 2D physics and magnetism in these interesting semiconductors., Comment: 13 pages, 10 Figures

1T-TaS$_2$ is a layered transition metal dichalgeonide with a very rich phase diagram. At T=180K it undergoes a metal to Mott insulator transition. Mott insulators usually display anti-ferromagnetic ordering in the insulating phase but 1T-TaS$_2$ was never shown to order magnetically. In this letter we show that 1T-TaS$_2$ has a large paramagnetic contribution to the magnetic susceptibility but it does not show any sign of magnetic ordering or freezing down to 20mK, as probed by $\mu$SR, possibly indicating a quantum spin liquid ground state. Although 1T-TaS$_2$ exhibits a strong resistive behavior both in and out-of plane at low temperatures we find a linear term in the heat capacity suggesting the existence of a Fermi-surface, which has an anomalously strong magnetic field dependence.

The cubic double perovskite Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ has been investigated by the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance ($^{89}$Y NMR) and muon spin rotation (muSR). Both methods confirm the absence of magnetic long-range order in this compound but find evidence for diluted localized paramagnetic moments. NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements suggest a slowing down of localized spin moments at low temperatures. An increase of the muSR spin-lattice relaxation rate lambda confirms the presence of weak magnetism in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ . However, these findings cannot be explained by the recently suggested excitonic type of magnetism. Instead, they point towards tiny amounts of localized paramagnetic spin centers leading to this magnetic response on the background of a simple nonmagnetic ground state of the 5d$^4$ ($J=0)$ electronic configuration of Ir$^{5+}$., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

MoTe_2, with the orthorhombic T_d phase, is a new type (type-II) of Weyl semimetal, where the Weyl Fermions emerge at the boundary between electron and hole pockets. Non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR), and superconductivity were also observed in T_d-MoTe_2. Understanding the superconductivity in T_d-MoTe_2, which was proposed to be topologically non-trivial, is of eminent interest. Here, we report high-pressure (p_max = 1.3 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in T_d-MoTe_2. A substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s/m^* and a linear scaling with T_c is observed under pressure. Moreover, the superconducting order parameter in T_d-MoTe_2 is determined to be two gap (s+s)-wave symmetric. We also excluded time reversal symmetry breaking in the SC state with sensitive zero-field ${\mu}$SR experiments. Considering the previous report \cite{Balicas1} on the strong suppression of T_c in T_d-MoTe_2 by disorder, we suggest that s^{+-} (topological order parameter) state is more likely to be realized in MoTe_2 than the s^{++} (trivial) state. Should s^{+-} be the SC gap symmetry, the T_d-MoTe_2 is, to our knowledge, the first known example of a time reversal invariant topological (Weyl) superconductor., Comment: 15 pages and 9 figures

In the quasi-1D heavy-fermion system YbNi$_4$(P$_{1-x}$As$_x$)$_2$ the presence of a ferromagnetic (FM) quantum critical point (QCP) at $x_c$ $\approx 0.1$ with unconventional quantum critical exponents in the thermodynamic properties has been recently reported. Here, we present muon-spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) experiments on polycrystals of this series to study the magnetic order and the low energy 4$f$-electronic spin dynamics across the FM QCP. The zero field $\mu$SR measurements on pure YbNi$_4$(P$_{2}$ proved static long range magnetic order and suggested a strongly reduced ordered Yb moment of about 0.04$\mu_B$. With increasing As substitution the ordered moment is reduced by half at $x = 0.04$ and to less than 0.005 $\mu_B$ at $x=0.08$. The dynamic behavior in the $\mu$SR response show that magnetism remains homogeneous upon As substitution, without evidence for disorder effect. In the paramagnetic state across the FM QCP the dynamic muon-spin relaxation rate follows 1/$T_{1}T\propto T^{-n}$ with $1.01 \pm 0.04 \leq n \leq 1.13 \pm 0.06$. The critical fluctuations are very slow and are even becoming slower when approaching the QCP., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements were carried out on SrDy$_2$O$_4$, a frustrated magnet featuring short range magnetic correlations at low temperatures. Zero-field muon spin depolarization measurements demonstrate that fast magnetic fluctuations are present from $T=300$ K down to 20 mK. The coexistence of short range magnetic correlations and fluctuations at $T=20$ mK indicates that SrDy$_2$O$_4$ features a spin liquid ground state. Large longitudinal fields affect weakly the muon spin depolarization, also suggesting the presence of fast fluctuations. For a longitudinal field of $\mu_0H=2$ T, a non-relaxing asymmetry contribution appears below $T=6$ K, indicating considerable slowing down of the magnetic fluctuations as field-induced magnetically-ordered phases are approached., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to be published as a proceeding of HFM2016 in Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS)

We present a muon spin relaxation study on the Ising pyrochlore Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ which develops an "all-in-all-out" magnetic order below 0.4~K. At 20~mK far below the ordering transition temperature, the zero-field muon spin relaxation spectra show no static features and can be well described by a dynamical Gaussian-broadened Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe function indicating strong fluctuations of the ordered state. The spectra of the paramagnetic state (below 4.2~K) reveal anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics and show only small difference with the spectra of the ordered state. We find that the fluctuation rate decreases with decreasing temperature and becomes nearly temperature independent below the transition temperature indicating persistent slow spin dynamics in the ground state. The field distribution width shows a small but sudden increase at the transition temperature and then becomes almost constant. The spectra in applied longitudinal fields are well fitted by the conventional dynamical Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe function, which further supports the dynamical nature of the ground state. The fluctuation rate shows a peak as a function of external field which is associated with a field-induced spin-flip transition. The strong dynamics in the ordered state are attributed to the transverse coupling of the Ising spins introduced by the multipole interactions., Comment: 9 pages, 12 figures

The recent discovery of the topologically protected surface states in the beta-phase of PdBi2 has reignited the research interest in this class of superconductors. Here, we show results of our muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements carried out to investigate the superconducting and magnetic properties and the topological effect in the superconducting ground state of beta-PdBi2. Zero-field muSR data reveal that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity implying that the time reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of beta-PdBi2. Further, a strong diamagnetic shift of the applied field has been observed in the transverse-field (TF) muSR experiments, indicating that any triplet-pairing channel, if present, does not dominate the superconducting condensate. Using TF-muSR, we estimate that the magnetic penetration depth is 263(10) nm at zero temperature. Temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth provides evidence for the existence of a nodeless single s-wave type isotropic energy gap of 0.78(1) meV at zero temperature. Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.

Using a mixed-ligand synthetic scheme, we create a family of quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets, namely, [Cu(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]ClO$_4$ [pyz = pyrazine], [Cu$L_2$(pyz)$_2$](ClO$_4$)$_2$ [$L$ = pyO = pyridine-N-oxide and 4-phpyO = 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide. These materials are shown to possess equivalent two-dimensional [Cu(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ nearly square layers, but exhibit interlayer spacings that vary from 6.5713~\AA ~to 16.777~\AA, as dictated by the axial ligands. We present the structural and magnetic properties of this family as determined via x-ray diffraction, electron-spin resonance, pulsed- and quasistatic-field magnetometry and muon-spin rotation, and compare them to those of the prototypical two-dimensional magnetic polymer Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$. We find that, within the limits of the experimental error, the two-dimensional, {\it intralayer} exchange coupling in our family of materials remains largely unaffected by the axial ligand substitution, while the observed magnetic ordering temperature decreases slowly with increasing layer separation. Despite the structural motifs common to this family and Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$, the latter has significantly stronger two-dimensional exchange interactions and hence a higher ordering temperature. We discuss these results, as well as the mechanisms that might drive the long-range order in these materials, in terms of departures from the ideal $S=1/2$ two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. In particular, we find that both spin exchange anisotropy in the intralayer interaction and interlayer couplings (exchange, dipolar, or both) are needed to account for the observed ordering temperatures, with the intralayer anisotropy becoming more important as the layers are pulled further apart., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although additional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation., Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters

We report local probe ($\mu$SR) measurements on the recently discovered tetragonal FeS superconductor which has been predicted to be electronically very similar to superconducting FeSe. Most remarkably, we find that low moment ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}\mu_\mathrm{B})$ disordered magnetism with a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 20$ K microscopically coexists with bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{c}=4.3(1)$ K. From transverse field $\mu$SR we obtain an in-plane penetration depth $\lambda_\mathrm{ab}(0)=223(2)$ nm for FeS. The temperature dependence of the corresponding superfluid density $\lambda_\mathrm{ab}^{-2}(T)$ indicates a fully gapped superconducting state and is consistent with a two gap s-wave model. Additionally, we find that the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}$ of FeS continuously decreases for hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, including supplemental material

We report measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of the pyrochlore compound Nd2Sn2O7. It undergoes a second order magnetic phase transition at Tc ~ 0.91 K to a noncoplanar all-in-all-out magnetic structure of the Nd3+ magnetic moments. The thermal behavior of the low temperature specific heat fingerprints excitations with linear dispersion in a three-dimensional lattice. The temperature independent spin-lattice relaxation rate measured below Tc and the anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics detected up to ~ 30 Tc are suggested to be due to magnetic short-range correlations in unidimensional spin clusters, i.e., spin loops. The observation of a spontaneous field in muon spin relaxation measurements is associated with the absence of a divergence-free field for the ground state of an all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet as predicted recently., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report specific heat, magnetic, and muon spin relaxation measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of the normal spinel CdHo2S4. The rare-earth ions sit on a lattice of corner-sharing regular tetrahedra as in pyrochlore compounds. Magnetic ordering is detected at Tc ~ 0.87 K. From spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements on both sides of Tc we uncover similar magnetic excitation modes driving the so-called persistent spin dynamics at T < Tc. Unidimensional excitations are argued to be at its origin. Often observed spin loop structures are suggested to support these excitations. We report a positive muon spin relaxation and rotation (\muSR) study of the quantum spin ice materials Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7 focusing on the low field response. In agreement with earlier reports, data recorded in small longitudinal fields evidence anomalously slow spin dynamics in the microsecond range below the temperature T_c at which the specific heat displays an intense peak, namely T_c = 0.24 K and 0.15 K, respectively, for the two systems. We found that slow dynamics extends above T_c up to at least 0.7 K for both compounds. The conventional dynamical Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe model describes the \muSR spectra recorded above T_c. At lower temperatures a published analytical extension of the Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe model provides a good description, consistent with the existence of short-range magnetic correlations. While the physical response of the two systems is qualitatively the same, Yb2Ti2O7 exhibits a much larger local magnetic susceptibility than Yb2Sn2O7 below T_c. Considering previously reported ac susceptibility, neutron scattering and \muSR results, we suggest the existence of anomalously slow spin dynamics to be a common physical property of pyrochlore magnetic materials. The possibility of molecular spin substructures to be associated to the slow dynamics and therefore the short-range correlations is mentioned. The slow spin dynamics observed under field does not exclude the presence of much faster dynamics detected in extremely low or zero field., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The superconducting pairing state of LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is studied by measuring the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T,B)$ and the superfluid density $\rho_s(T)$ using a tunnel-diode-oscillator (TDO)-based method and by transverse field muon-spin rotation ($\mu$SR) spectroscopy. $\lambda(T)$ follows an exponential-type temperature dependence at $T\ll T_{c}$, but its zero-temperature value $\lambda(0)$ increases linearly with magnetic field. Detailed analyses demonstrate that both $\lambda(T)$ and the corresponding $\rho_{s}(T)$, measured in the Meissner state by the TDO method are well described by a two-gap $\gamma$ model with gap sizes of $\Delta_1(0)=1.31k_{B}T_c$ and $\Delta_2(0)=1.80k_{B}T_c$ and a very weak interband coupling. In contrast, $\rho_s(T)$, derived from the $\mu \rm{SR}$ data taken in a small field, can be fitted by a single-gap BCS model with a gap close to $\Delta_2(0)$. We conclude that LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is a marginal two-gap superconductor and the small gap $\Delta_1$ seems to be destroyed by a small magnetic field. In comparison, in PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ the $4f$-electrons may enhance the interband coupling and, therefore, give rise to more robust multiband superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and muon spin relaxation (muSR) experiments on the triangular antiferromagnet La2Ca2MnO7 which develops a genuine two-dimensional, three-sublattice \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} magnetic order below T_N = 2.8 K. From the susceptibility and specific heat data an estimate of the exchange interaction is derived. A value for the spin-wave gap is obtained from the latter data. The analysis of a previously reported inelastic neutron scattering study yields values for the exchange and spin-wave gap compatible with the results obtained from macroscopic measurements. An appreciable entropy is still missing at 10 K that may be ascribed to intense short-range correlations. The critical paramagnetic fluctuations extend far above T_N, and can be partly understood in terms of two-dimensional spin-wave excitations. While no spontaneous muSR field is observed below T_N, persistent spin dynamics is found. Short-range correlations are detected in this temperature range. Their relation to a possible molecular spin substructure and the observed exotic spin fluctuations is discussed., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Solid-solutions of the "soft" quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnets Tb2B2O7 with B=Ti and Sn display a novel magnetic ground state in the presence of strong B-site disorder, characterized by a low susceptibility and strong spin fluctuations to temperatures below 0.1 K. These materials have been studied using ac-susceptibility and muSR techniques to very low temperatures, and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering techniques to 1.5 K. Remarkably, neutron spectroscopy of the Tb3+ crystal field levels appropriate to at high B-site mixing (0.5 < x < 1.5 in Tb2Sn2-xTixO7) reveal that the doublet ground and first excited states present as continua in energy, while transitions to singlet excited states at higher energies simply interpolate between those of the end members of the solid solution. The resulting ground state suggests an extreme version of a random-anisotropy magnet, with many local moments and anisotropies, depending on the precise local configuration of the six B sites neighboring each magnetic Tb3+ ion., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We present a study of the alloying series of the non-centrosymmetric $f$-electron intermetallic CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. In addition, we include a high pressure magnetization investigation of the stoichiometric parent compound CePt$_3$B. From our data we establish the nature of the magnetic ground state properties of the series, derive the ordered magnetic moment as function of stoichiometry and gain insight into the evolution of the symmetry of the ordered magnetic state with $x$. We thus can verify the notion that the behavior of the sample series can essentially be understood within the framework of the Doniach phase diagram. Further, our findings raise the issue of the role the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnetic interaction plays in correlated electron materials, and its effect on magnetic fluctuations in such materials., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

Muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements have been performed to study the superconducting and magnetic properties of Nb2PdS5. Zero-field muSR data show that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity in Nb2PdS5 which indicates that the time reversal symmetry is probably preserved in the superconducting state of this system. A strong diamagnetic shift is observed in the transverse-field muSR data practically ruling out a dominant triplet-pairing superconducting state in Nb2PdS5. The temperature dependence of magnetic penetration depth evidences the existence of a single s-wave energy gap with a gap value of 1.07(4) meV at zero temperature. The gap to Tc ratio, 2.02(9), indicates that Nb2PdS5 should be considered as a moderately strong-coupling superconductor. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 785(20) nm, indicating a very low superfluid density consistent with the quasi-one-dimensional nature of this system., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figs

We report synchrotron radiation diffraction and muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements on the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7. The powder diffraction study of a crushed crystal fragment does not reveal any structural change down to 4 K. The muSR measurements performed at 20 mK on a mosaic of single crystals with an external magnetic field applied along a three-fold axis are consistent with published a.c. magnetic-susceptibility measurements at 16 mK. It is well established that long-range magnetic order is suppressed in magnetic systems whose interactions are low-dimensional. The prototypical example is the S-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain (S-1/2 HAFC) whose ground state is quantum critical. In real S-1/2 HAFC compounds interchain coupling induces long-range magnetic order although with a suppressed ordered moment and reduced N\'eel temperature compared to the Curie-Weiss temperature. Recently, it was suggested that order can also be suppressed if the interchain interactions are frustrated, as for the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model. Here, we study the new S-1/2 HAFC, (NO)[Cu(NO3)3]. This material shows extreme suppression of order which furthermore is incommensurate revealing the presence of frustration consistent with the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model.

Long range magnetic ordering in the quasi-one-dimensional random-bond antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$)$_2$O$_7$ is studied in $\mu$SR experiments as a function of disorder strength. Compared to the disorder-free parent materials, the saturation ordered moment is found to be considerably reduced. Moreover, even in weakly disordered species, the magnetically ordered state is shown to be highly inhomogeneous. The results are interpreted in terms of weakly coupled random spin chains, governed by the ``infinite randomness`` fixed point.

We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $\mu$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K$ for Nd227 and $70 K$ for Sm227); both materials show heavily damped muon precession with a characteristic frequency near 9 MHz. The magnetic anomaly at $T_{M}$ in Nd227 is not significantly affected by the introduction of hole carriers by Ca-substitution in the conducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ samples, but the muon precession is fully suppressed for both.

The field distribution in the vortex lattice of a pure niobium single crystal with an external field applied along a three-fold axis has been investigated by the transverse-field muon-spin-rotation (TF-$\mu$SR) technique over a wide range of temperatures and fields. The experimental data have been analyzed with the Delrieu's solution for the form factor supplemented by phenomenological formulas for the parameters. This has enabled us to experimentally establish the temperatures and fields for the Delrieu's, Ginzburg-Landau's, and Klein's regions of the vortex lattice. Using the numerical solution of the quasiclassical Eilenberger's equation the experimental results have been reasonably understood. They should apply to all clean BCS superconductors. We present the results of a systematic investigation of the magnetic properties of the three-dimensional Kondo topological insulator SmB6 using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. The muSR measurements exhibit magnetic field fluctuations in SmB6 below 15 K due to electronic moments present in the system. However, no evidence for magnetic ordering is found down to 19 mK. The observed magnetism in SmB6 is homogeneous in nature throughout the full volume of the sample. Bulk magnetization measurements on the same sample show consistent behavior. The agreement between muSR, magnetization, and NMR results strongly indicate the appearance of intrinsic bulk magnetic in-gap states associated with fluctuating magnetic fields in SmB6 at low temperature., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Muon-spin rotation has been used to probe vortex state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. At moderate fields and temperatures a lattice of triangular symmetry is observed, crossing over to a lattice of square symmetry with increasing field and temperature. At lower fields it is found that there are large regions of the sample that are completely free from vortices which grow in volume as the temperature falls. Importantly this is accompanied by {\it increasing} vortex density and increasing disorder within the vortex-cluster containing regions. Both effects are expected to result from the strongly temperature-dependent long-range vortex attractive forces arising from the multi-band chiral-order superconductivity., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures
