17. Dietary calcium to phosphorus ratio affects postprandial phosphorus concentrations in feline plasma.

Abstract

The impact of dietary phosphorus on chronic renal disease in cats, humans and other species is receiving increasing attention. As Ca and P metabolism are linked, the ratio of Ca:P is an important factor for consideration when formulating diets for cats and other animals. Here, we describe a fully randomised crossover study including twenty-four healthy, neutered adult cats, investigating postprandial responses in plasma P, ionised Ca and parathyroid hormone (PTH) following one meal (50 % of individual metabolic energy requirement) of each of six experimental diets. Diets were formulated to provide P at either 0·75 or 1·5 g/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) from the soluble phosphorus salt sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP, Na5P3O10), variable levels of organic Ca and P sources, and an intended total Ca:P of about 1·0, 1·5 or 2·0. For each experimental diet, baseline fasted blood samples were collected prior to the meal, and serial blood samples collected hourly for 6 h thereafter. For all diets, a significant increase from baseline was observed at 120 min in plasma PTH (P < 0·001). The diet containing the highest STPP inclusion level and lowest Ca:P induced the highest peaks in postprandial plasma P and PTH levels (1·8 mmol/l and 27·2 pg/ml, respectively), and the longest duration of concentrations raised above baseline were observed at 3 h for P and 6 h for PTH. Data indicate that Ca:P modulates postprandial plasma P and PTH. Therefore, when formulating diets containing soluble P salts for cats, increasing the Ca:P ratio should be considered. Abstract

Genetically modified (GM) plants were first grown commercially more than 20 years ago, but their use is still controversial in some parts of the world. Many GM plant varieties are produced in large quantities globally and are approved for use in fish feeds both in Norway and the European Union. European consumers, however, are skeptical to fish produced by means of GM feed ingredients. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of GM plants, including potential toxicity and (or) allergenicity of the novel protein, potential unintended effects, and risk of horizontal gene transfer to other species. This review will present the current state of knowledge regarding GM plants as fish feed ingredients, focusing on fish performance and health as well as the fate of the GM DNA fragments in the fish, identifying limitations of the current work and areas where further research is needed. Les plantes geenetiquement modifiees (GM) ont commence; a etre cultiveies commercialement il y a plus de 20 ans, mais leur utilisation reste controversee dans certaines regions du globe. Plusieurs varieetees de plantes GM sont produites en grande quantite a l'echelle mondiale et sont acceptees dans la preparation de la nourriture de poissons, tant en Norvege que dans l'Union europeenne. Les consommateurs europeens maintiennent cependant une certaine inquietude concernant les poissons produits par l'usage d'ingredients alimentaires GM. On a manifeste des preoccupations en ce qui a trait a l'innocuite des plantes GM, en particulier a la toxicite et (ou) l'allergenicite potentielles des proteines nouvelles, aux effets potentiels imprevus et au risque de transferts horizontaux des genes aux autres especes. Abstract

Antimikrobielle midler har revolusjonert medisinen i det 20. århundre ved å gi effektiv behandling mot infeksjonssykdommer. Mikroorganismer har imidlertid evnen til å utvikle reistens mot slike stoffer. Bruk av antimikrobielle midler bidrar til utvikling av resistente stammer. Det er viktig å forsøke å hindre resistens mot antimikrobielle stoffer som vi er avhengige av for behandling av smittsomme sykdommer hos mennesker. Bruk av antimikrobielle midler til matproduserende dyr kan skape en kilde til resistente bakterier som kan spres til mennesker både ved direkte kontakt og gjennom mat. Antimicrobials revolutionized human as well as animal medicine in the 20th century by providing effective treatment of diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms. However, microorganisms have the ability to develop antimicrobial resistant strains. This occurs when microorganisms mutate or when resistance genes are exchanged between them. The use of antimicrobial drugs accelerates the emergence of drug-resistant strains. A priority is to safeguard the efficacy of antimicrobial drugs we depend on for treatment of infectious diseases in humans. Use of antimicrobials in food animals can create a source of antimicrobial resistant bacteria that can spread to humans both by direct contact and through the food supply.
