Abstract

Results obtained from experimental and numerical studies of tungsten wires electrical explosion in vacuum are presented. The experiments were performed both with and without preheating of the wires, using positive or negative polarity of a high-voltage electrode. Preheating is shown to increase energy deposition in the wire core due to a longer resistive heating stage. The effect was observed both in single wire and wire array experiments. The evolution of the phase state of the wire material during explosion was examined by means of one-dimensional numerical simulation using a semiempirical wide-range equation of state describing the properties of tungsten with allowance made for melting and vaporization., Comment: 9 pages, 9 Postscript figures

Abstract

An experimental study of the explosion of cylindrical copper rods in the current skinning mode was performed using the GIT-12 high-current pulse generator with currents of amplitude up to 5 MA and rise time about 2 μs. It was observed that the waveforms of the electrical impedance of the exploded rods exhibited low-frequency oscillations with a period of several hundreds of nanoseconds. The results of the experiment with exploded solid copper rods carried out on the GIT-12 facility were interpreted by performing a series of magnetohydrodynamic calculations. It was shown that the experimentally observed low-frequency oscillations of the rod impedance were associated with a fast magnetosonic wave excited in the material of the rod. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The plasma expansion from an exploded wire with characteristic times of energy deposition in the wire of tens of microseconds was studied. The probe method was used to measure the plasma temperature and plasma density distributions. Tungsten wires 25, 50, 75, and 125 μm in diameter and a copper wire 100 μm in diameter were used. The waveforms of discharge voltage Ud, discharge current Id, and floating potential showed that Ud was close to a constant, while Id decreased, indicating that the wire resistance increased until plasma appeared. Immediately after the appearance of plasma, Id was observed to peak, while the voltage decreased stepwise from ∼110 to about 70 V. A relatively high electron temperature (about 12 eV) was observed in the expanding plasma even at r=2 cm from the wire axis. The plasma density was a maximum of 2×1013 cm-3 at r=2 cm, and it decreased with increasing r. For r<2 cm, unusual electrical parameters were observed, indicating the probe activity and a significantly increased plasma density in the region close to the wire core. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents experimental results on electrical explosions of thin tungsten wires at wire currents of 0.04–0.4 kA and current rise times of several tens of nanoseconds. The experiment was performed for both negative and positive polarity of the high-voltage electrode. In addition to conventional current and voltage measurements, the current to a grounded cylindrical collector placed between the exploded wire and the return conductor was measured. The collector current was observed only for a 6 μm wire exploded with the high-voltage electrode being at a negative potential. In all other test modes (a 6 μm wire exploded with electrode positive polarity, 6 μm wire exploded with electrodes enclosed in ceramic tubes, 30 μm wires exploded with electrode negative and positive polarities) no collector current was detected. A model of the discharge initiation during a wire explosion (WE) in vacuum has been proposed which is based on the supposition that a surface discharge develops over the electrodes. The presence of plasma-emitted electrons at the cathode surface makes it possible to interpret the experimental results on WEs at different electrode polarities reported both in this paper and in previous publications.
