7. Effect of Anaerobic Microbial Corrosion on the Surface Film Formed on Steel

Abstract

Anaerobic corrosion caused by an obligate anaerobic bacteria, Clostridium pasteurianum, was investigated. Corrosion rates were measured against various controls. It was determined that the metal sample experiences a higher corrosion rate than could be attributed to free H2 or other metabolic products and thus biotic processes contribute to the overall corrosion. Corrosion products were identified using surface analytical techniques.
