Abstract

We study the analysis of all the movements of the population on the basis of their mobility from one node to another, to observe, measure, and predict the impact of traffic according to this mobility. The frequency of congestion on roads directly or indirectly impacts our economic or social welfare. Our work focuses on exploring some machine learning methods to predict (with a certain probability) traffic in a multimodal transportation network from population mobility data. 2. Adaptive BPE Tokenization for Enhanced Vocabulary Adaptation in Finetuning Pretrained Language Models

Abstract

In this work, we show a fundamental limitation in vocabulary adaptation approaches that use Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE) tokenization scheme for fine-tuning pretrained language models (PLMs) to expert domains. Current approaches trivially append the target domain-specific vocabulary at the end of the PLM vocabulary. This approach leads to a lower priority score and causes sub-optimal tokenization in BPE that iteratively uses merge rules to tokenize a given text. To mitigate this issue, we propose AdaptBPE where the BPE tokenization initialization phase is modified to first perform the longest string matching on the added (target) vocabulary before tokenizing at the character level. We perform an extensive evaluation of AdaptBPE versus the standard BPE over various classification and summarization tasks; AdaptBPE improves by 3.57% (in terms of accuracy) and 1.87% (in terms of Rouge-L), respectively. AdaptBPE for MEDVOC works particularly well when reference summaries have high OOV concentration or are longer in length. We also conduct a human evaluation, revealing that AdaptBPE generates more relevant and more faithful summaries as compared to MEDVOC. Abstract

Citizen science offers an opportunity for ordinary people, known as citizen scientists or citizen astronomers in the context of astronomy, to contribute to scientific research. The Pan-African Citizen Science e-Lab (PACS e-Lab) was founded to promote and engage the African public in citizen science and soft astronomy research to advance space research and exploration and enhance space education and outreach. PACS e-Lab, in collaboration with several international astronomy research, education, and outreach organizations, currently runs several projects including but not limited to asteroid search, exoplanet photometry, research writing for peer-reviewed publications, astrophoto visual development, and Amateur Radio contact with astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ARISS). Despite several challenges, the group has engaged over 600 Africans from more than 40 countries and is working towards covering the entire continent in the future. Abstract

Asteroid search is a global effort for planetary defense. The International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC) is the leading global educational outreach program that provides high-quality astronomical datasets to citizen scientists to discover asteroids. Since December 4, 2020, the Pan-African Citizen Science e-Lab (PACS e-Lab) has been IASC's biggest partner on the continent in recruiting and training citizen scientists in asteroid search endeavors. Over 30 asteroids have been discovered by 60 citizen scientists. About 595 citizen scientists from over 40 countries have been engaged in the project up to the time of composing this literature. Abstract

We introduce the novel class $(E_\alpha)_{\alpha \in [-\infty,1)}$ of reverse map projection embeddings, each one defining a unique new method of encoding classical data into quantum states. Inspired by well-known map projections from the unit sphere onto its tangent planes, used in practice in cartography, these embeddings address the common drawback of the amplitude embedding method, wherein scalar multiples of data points are identified and information about the norm of data is lost. We show how reverse map projections can be utilised as equivariant embeddings for quantum machine learning. Using these methods, we can leverage symmetries in classical datasets to significantly strengthen performance on quantum machine learning tasks. Finally, we select four values of $\alpha$ with which to perform a simple classification task, taking $E_\alpha$ as the embedding and experimenting with both equivariant and non-equivariant setups. We compare their results alongside those of standard amplitude embedding.

7. MEDVOC: Vocabulary Adaptation for Fine-tuning Pre-trained Language Models on Medical Text Summarization

Abstract

This work presents a dynamic vocabulary adaptation strategy, MEDVOC, for fine-tuning pre-trained language models (PLMs) like BertSumAbs, BART, and PEGASUS for improved medical text summarization. In contrast to existing domain adaptation approaches in summarization, MEDVOC treats vocabulary as an optimizable parameter and optimizes the PLM vocabulary based on fragment score conditioned only on the downstream task's reference summaries. Unlike previous works on vocabulary adaptation (limited only to classification tasks), optimizing vocabulary based on summarization tasks requires an extremely costly intermediate fine-tuning step on large summarization datasets. To that end, our novel fragment score-based hyperparameter search very significantly reduces this fine-tuning time -- from 450 days to less than 2 days on average. Furthermore, while previous works on vocabulary adaptation are often primarily tied to single PLMs, MEDVOC is designed to be deployable across multiple PLMs (with varying model vocabulary sizes, pre-training objectives, and model sizes) -- bridging the limited vocabulary overlap between the biomedical literature domain and PLMs. MEDVOC outperforms baselines by 15.74% in terms of Rouge-L in zero-shot setting and shows gains of 17.29% in high Out-Of-Vocabulary (OOV) concentrations. Our human evaluation shows MEDVOC generates more faithful medical summaries (88% compared to 59% in baselines). 8. An optimal control study for a two-strain SEIR epidemic model with saturated incidence rates and treatment

Abstract

This work will study an optimal control problem describing the two-strain SEIR epidemic model. The studied model is in the form of six nonlinear differential equations illustrating the dynamics of the susceptibles and the exposed, the infected, and the recovered individuals. The exposed and the infected compartments are each divided into two sub-classes representing the first and the second strain. The model includes two saturated rates and two treatments for each strain. We begin our study by showing the well-posedness of our problem. The basic reproduction number is calculated and depends mainly on the reproduction numbers of the first and second strains. The global stability of the disease-free equilibrium is fulfilled. The optimal control study is achieved by using the Pontryagin minimum principle. Numerical simulations have shown the importance of therapy in minimizing the infection's effect. By administrating suitable therapies, the disease's severity decreases considerably. The estimation of parameters as well as a comparison study with COVID-19 clinical data are fulfilled. It was shown that the mathematical model results fits well the clinical data.

13. Ultra-high dimensional confounder selection algorithms comparison with application to radiomics data

Abstract

Radiomics is an emerging area of medical imaging data analysis particularly for cancer. It involves the conversion of digital medical images into mineable ultra-high dimensional data. Machine learning algorithms are widely used in radiomics data analysis to develop powerful decision support model to improve precision in diagnosis, assessment of prognosis and prediction of therapy response. However, machine learning algorithms for causal inference have not been previously employed in radiomics analysis. In this paper, we evaluate the value of machine learning algorithms for causal inference in radiomics. We select three recent competitive variable selection algorithms for causal inference: outcome-adaptive lasso (OAL), generalized outcome-adaptive lasso (GOAL) and causal ball screening (CBS). We used a sure independence screening procedure to propose an extension of GOAL and OAL for ultra-high dimensional data, SIS + GOAL and SIS + OAL. We compared SIS + GOAL, SIS + OAL and CBS using simulation study and two radiomics datasets in cancer, osteosarcoma and gliosarcoma. The two radiomics studies and the simulation study identified SIS + GOAL as the optimal variable selection algorithm.

Neocarya macrophylla Sabine (Gingerbread plum) is a tree species that plays an important role in providing ecosystem services. Despite its importance, the diversity and density of N. macrophylla stands have decreased significantly due to natural and anthropogenic factors. There is a need for better knowledge of N. macrophylla seedling production techniques for successful reforestation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of pre-treatment and substrates on germination and growth of N. macrophylla seedlings. A completely randomized design with three replications and 12 elementary plots of nine polyethylene bags was installed. Abstract

Background.The issue of diarrheal diseases remains relevant for modern health care in all countries. Campylobacteriosis is the most common infectious disease with foodborne transmission and poultry meat is a transmission factor.Materials and methods.724 items of faeces sampled from patients with diarrheal syndrome and 283 samples of faeces of chickens raised on private farms and five poultry farms in the province were studied. For bacteriological method were used selective media. Traditional routine tests (cell morphology, cytochrome oxidase, catalase, hydrolysis of sodium hippurate and indoxyl acetate) and MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry was performed for identification. The susceptibility of strains to antibiotics was analysed using the disc-diffusion method. Results were interpreted according to the EUCAST criteria, versions 2019–2022.Results.Campylobacterspp. was cultured in 65 out of 724 faecal samples from patients with acute diarrhoea, of them 83.08% were identified asC. jejuni, and 16.92% asC. coli. Of the 237Campylobacterstrains from chicken were identified asC. jejuni(54.0%), asC. coli(46.0%).Campylobacterspp. strains from humans were resistant to tetracycline (40.0%), to erythromycin (6.15%), to ciprofloxacin (12.31%). The strains from chickens kept on farms, were resistant to tetracycline in 42.55%, to ciprofloxacin — in 22.70% and to erythromycin — in 11.35%. The strains from chickens kept on private farms were resistant to tetracycline in 4.17%, to ciprofloxacin — in 1.04%, all strains were sensitive to erythromycin.Conclusion.Thus, due to the widespread prevalence ofCampylobacterspp., infectious diseases they cause remain a topical issue. Studying the resistance to antibiotics inCampylobacterspp. among poultry could allow to develop new approaches to confirming the significance of their foodborne nature and to improve the national disease prevention system.

Abstract

Abstract Background On 5 November 2021, a fire incident following a tanker explosion occurred in the Wellington PMB Junction east of Freetown, Sierra Leone, injuring and killing people. WHO facilitated the deployment of international emergency medical teams (EMTs) to support the Ministry of Health (MoH) in providing care to the wounded in four hospitals. Objective In this study, we document Sierra Leone's experience managing the fire incident and the role of EMTs in responding to it. Method This is a cross-sectional After-Action Review (AAR) debrief of the response and deployment, including focus group discussion with WHO and MoH staff (n = 14) in a virtual workshop and document reviews on the response. The results thematically cover the event and the different agencies' responses and a review of EMTs' responses. Results At the onset of the emergency, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) instituted a well-coordinated response mechanism in collaboration with the MoH and managed all response actions, such as medical services, informing partners and the public and coordinating all other agencies. WHO facilitated EMT deployments and mobilised medical supplies and equipment, while the MoH provided accommodation, logistics and coordination. The EMTs dispensed their functions with professionalism, adapted to the environment and available resources, and augmented the care the national health workers provided. They offered additional care: reconstructive surgery, pain management, palliative care, wound care, rehabilitation, physiotherapy and psychosocial counselling, which were initially inadequate at the onset of the disaster. 94 out of 157 patients were discharged home at the end. National clinicians acquired additional skills through the capacity-building activities of EMTs. The community appreciated the teams. Conclusion The government, partners and EMTs were important in the response and worked with speed and political acceptability using the context experience to provide surge support to the country. This experience brought to focus the idea of developing a national EMT in Sierra Leone, which would be useful to help respond even more swiftly. In collaboration with WHO, there is a need to institute further mechanisms to facilitate rapid response and quality-assured deployment of EMTs at regional and sub-regional levels and strengthen to support future responses.

20. The oracle property of the generalized outcome adaptive lasso

Abstract

The generalized outcome-adaptive lasso (GOAL) is a variable selection for high-dimensional causal inference proposed by Bald\'e et al. [2023, {\em Biometrics} {\bfseries 79(1)}, 514--520]. When the dimension is high, it is now well established that an ideal variable selection method should have the oracle property to ensure the optimal large sample performance. However, the oracle property of GOAL has not been proven. In this paper, we show that the GOAL estimator enjoys the oracle property. Our simulation shows that the GOAL method deals with the collinearity problem better than the oracle-like method, the outcome-adaptive lasso (OAL).

Abstract

Nowadays, numerical models are widely used in most of engineering fields to simulate the behaviour of complex systems, such as for example power plants or wind turbine in the energy sector. Those models are nevertheless affected by uncertainty of different nature (numerical, epistemic) which can affect the reliability of their predictions. We develop here a new method for quantifying conditional parameter uncertainty within a chain of two numerical models in the context of multiphysics simulation. More precisely, we aim to calibrate the parameters $\theta$ of the second model of the chain conditionally on the value of parameters $\lambda$ of the first model, while assuming the probability distribution of $\lambda$ is known. This conditional calibration is carried out from the available experimental data of the second model. In doing so, we aim to quantify as well as possible the impact of the uncertainty of $\lambda$ on the uncertainty of $\theta$. To perform this conditional calibration, we set out a nonparametric Bayesian formalism to estimate the functional dependence between $\theta$ and $\lambda$, denoted by $\theta(\lambda)$. First, each component of $\theta(\lambda)$ is assumed to be the realization of a Gaussian process prior. Then, if the second model is written as a linear function of $\theta(\lambda)$, the Bayesian machinery allows us to compute analytically the posterior predictive distribution of $\theta(\lambda)$ for any set of realizations $\lambda$. Abstract

Data privacy in healthcare is of paramount importance (and thus regulated using laws like HIPAA) due to the highly sensitive nature of patient data. To that end, healthcare organizations mention how they collect/process/store/share this data (i.e., data practices) via their privacy policies. Thus there is a need to audit these policies and check compliance with respective laws. This paper addresses this need and presents a large-scale data-driven study to audit privacy policies from healthcare organizations in three countries -- USA, UK, and India. We developed a three-stage novel \textit{workflow} for our audit. First, we collected the privacy policies of thousands of healthcare organizations in these countries and cleaned this privacy policy data using a clustering-based mixed-method technique. We identified data practices regarding users' private medical data (medical history) and site privacy (cookie, logs) in these policies. Second, we adopted a summarization-based technique to uncover exact broad data practices across countries and notice important differences. Finally, we evaluated the cross-country data practices using the lens of legal compliance (with legal expert feedback) and grounded in the theory of Contextual Integrity (CI). Alarmingly, we identified six themes of non-alignment (observed in 21.8\% of data practices studied in India) pointed out by our legal experts. Furthermore, there are four \textit{potential violations} according to case verdicts from Indian Courts as pointed out by our legal experts. We conclude this paper by discussing the utility of our auditing workflow and the implication of our findings for different stakeholders.

Abstract Background The Republic of Guinea, where malaria represents the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children, the seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is deployed only in areas with very seasonal modes of transmission. It should target children at the highest risk of serious illness. The objective of the study was to prevent uncomplicated and serious cases of malaria in the target population. This study aimed to analyse the monthly trends in malaria-related morbidity among children under the age of 5 in Guinea. Methods This was a quasi-experimental study with routine data from the National Health Information System (SNIS). The two districts Mamou (the SMC intervention site) and Kindia (the control site) were selected to compare the monthly trends in malaria cases among children under the age of 5, from July to October, covering the years from 2015 to 2020. The statistical analysis used interrupted time series to estimate the effects of the SMC. Results The SMC programme contributed to a significant average reduction in the number of malaria cases of 225 cases per month in the intervention district (95% CI − 362 to − 88; p = 0.002), compared to the control district. However, the study also revealed that the effect of SMC varied between cycles, presenting different monthly malaria cases. Conclusion The SMC contributed to a significant reduction in malaria cases among children under the age of 5 in the health district of Mamou from 2018 to 2020. However, this reduction varied by monthly SMC cycle. This study suggests extending the SMC in other areas with high perennial seasonal transmission respecting the World Health Organization SMC eligibility criteria, as a strategy in the dynamic of reducing malaria cases in children under the age of 5 in Guinea.

Abstract

BackgroundThere has been substantial progress in developing approaches to measure mistreatment of women during childbirth. However, less is known about the differences in measurement approaches. In this study, we compare measures of mistreatment obtained from the same women using labour observations and community-based surveys in Ghana, Guinea and Nigeria.MethodsExperiences of mistreatment during childbirth are person-centred quality measures. As such, we assessed individual-level and population-level accuracy of labour observation relative to women's self-report for different types of mistreatment. We calculated sensitivity, specificity, percent agreement and population-level inflation factor (IF), assessing prevalence of mistreatment in labour observation divided by 'true' prevalence in women's self-report. We report the IF degree of bias as: low (0.75Results1536 women across Ghana (n=779), Guinea (n=425) and Nigeria (n=332) were included. Most mistreatment items demonstrated better specificity than sensitivity: observation of any physical abuse (44% sensitive, 89% specific), any verbal abuse (61% sensitive, 73% specific) and presence of a labour companion (19% sensitive, 93% specific). Items for stigma (IF 0.16), pain relief requested (IF 0.38), companion present (IF 0.32) and lack of easy access to fluids (IF 0.46) showed high risk of bias, meaning labour observations would substantially underestimate true prevalence. Other items showed low or moderate bias.ConclusionUsing self-report as the reference standard, labour observations demonstrated moderate-to-high specificity (accurately identifying lack of mistreatment) but low-to-moderate sensitivity (accurately identifying presence of mistreatment) among women. For overall prevalence, either women's self-report or observations can be used with low-moderate bias for most mistreatment items. However, given the dynamicity, complexity, and limitations in 'objectivity', some experiences of mistreatment (stigma, pain relief, labour companionship, easy access to fluids) require measurement via women's self-report. More work is needed to understand how subjectivity influences how well a measure represents individual's experiences.

Abstract

Background There is limited evidence on how to engage health workers as advocates in preventing female genital mutilation (FGM). This study assesses the feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness and impact of a person-centered communication (PCC) approach for FGM prevention among antenatal care (ANC) providers in Guinea, Kenya and Somalia.Methods Between August 2020 and September 2021, a cluster randomised trial was conducted in 180 ANC clinics in three countries testing an intervention on PCC for FGM prevention. A process evaluation was embedded, comprising in-depth interviews (IDIs) with 18 ANC providers and 18 ANC clients. A qualitative thematic analysis was conducted, guided by themes identified a priori and/or that emerged from the data.Results ANC providers and clients agreed that the ANC context was a feasible, acceptable and appropriate entry point for FGM prevention counselling. ANC clients were satisfied with how FGM-related information was communicated by providers and viewed them as trusted and effective communicators. Respondents suggested training reinforcement, targeting other cadres of health workers and applying this approach at different service delivery points in health facilities and in the community to increase sustainability and impact.Conclusion These findings can inform the scale up this FGM prevention approach in high prevalence countries.

Background: In Guinea, despite women’s recourse to antenatal care (ANC), little remains known about the use of focused antenatal care (FANC), contained in the ANC package. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency and factors associated with FANC, using data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2018. Setting: This study was conducted in Guinea. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data from the DHS conducted in 2018 in Guinea. It included all women who achieved at least one ANC visit in the last 2 years prior to the survey. Multivariate logistic regression was received to identify factors associated with FANC. Stata 16 software was used for the analysis. Results: This study shows that in Guinea, between 2016 and 2018 only 33% of women undergoing ANC received a FANC. The most commonly used service was blood pressure measurement (93%), while the least commonly used service was deworming (42%). Factors associated with FANC were living in the Kindia region (odds ratio = 1.7; 95% confidence interval: 1.04–2.97); not intending to become pregnant for this pregnancy; belonging to a poor household; and having made 3, 4 or more ANC visits. Conclusion: This study reports a low proportion of women receiving the full package of ANC. Contribution: In order to improve this indicator, greater efforts need to be made in certain regions of the country to target pregnant women who achieve fewer ANC visits, carry pregnancies that were not intentional or belong to poorer households.

Objectives: In low malaria transmission areas, the elimination of the disease has been hampered partly by the existence of a reservoir of subpatent Plasmodium falciparum infections within communities. This reservoir, often undetected, serves as a source of parasites and contributes to ongoing transmission and clinical malaria cases. Methods: This study, spanning a period of 9 years from June 2014 to December 2022, examined individual variations and long-term subpatent P. falciparum carriage in two matched cohorts of 44 individuals each living in Dielmo village in the Sudanian area of Senegal. Biannual blood samples, collected in June/July and December of each year, underwent P. falciparum diagnosis by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Abstract

UNLABELLED: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is fueled by leukemic stem cells (LSC) whose determinants are challenging to discern from hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) or uncover by approaches focused on general cell properties. We have identified a set of RNA-binding proteins (RBP) selectively enriched in human AML LSCs. Using an in vivo two-step CRISPR-Cas9 screen to assay stem cell functionality, we found 32 RBPs essential for LSCs in MLL-AF9;NrasG12D AML. Loss-of-function approaches targeting key hit RBP ELAVL1 compromised LSC-driven in vivo leukemic reconstitution, and selectively depleted primitive malignant versus healthy cells. Integrative multiomics revealed differentiation, splicing, and mitochondrial metabolism as key features defining the leukemic ELAVL1-mRNA interactome with mitochondrial import protein, TOMM34, being a direct ELAVL1-stabilized target whose repression impairs AML propagation. Altogether, using a stem cell-adapted in vivo CRISPR screen, this work demonstrates pervasive reliance on RBPs as regulators of LSCs and highlights their potential as therapeutic targets in AML. SIGNIFICANCE: LSC-targeted therapies remain a significant unmet need in AML. We developed a stem-cell-adapted in vivo CRISPR screen to identify key LSC drivers. We uncover widespread RNA-binding protein dependencies in LSCs, including ELAVL1, which we identify as a novel therapeutic vulnerability through its regulation of mitochondrial metabolism. Abstract

Abstract Background The incidence of arterial hypertension increases with the aging of the population, but its magnitude remains insufficiently assessed. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hypertension and associated factors in elderly people in Guinea. Methods Data were obtained from a cross-sectional general population survey, conducted among people aged ≥ 60 years. A stratified enumeration area random sample survey was conducted in the four natural regions of Guinea from February to April 2021. This study included an interview on sociodemographic data, and a clinical examination. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90mmHg or previous diagnosis of hypertension (with or without antihypertensive medication). Hypertension control was defined as blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg during treatment. Age-standardized prevalence was calculated, and logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with hypertension. Results A total of 1698 adults (1079 men, mean age: 71.6 ± 9.4 years) had at least two blood pressure measurements. The standardized prevalence of hypertension was 61.4% [95% CI: 61.3–61.6], ranging from 52% in Middle Guinea to 67% in Upper Guinea, and was higher in women (65.2%: 65.0-65.4) than in men (59.1%:58.9–59.3). Among those with hypertension, 46.7% were unaware of their condition before the survey and 49.6% were on treatment and only 18.5% had controlled hypertension. Whatever the residence (rural or urban), increasing age, being unmarried, working as a trader or functionary, jobless, living in upper Guinea, low monthly income, intake of extra salt, known diabetic, overweight, and obesity increased the risk of hypertension. In urban area, female sex (AOR: 1.14: 1.12–1.17), living in lower Guinea (AOR: 3.08: 2.97–3.20), being Maninka (AOR: 1.26: 1.21–1.31), being Nguerze (AOR: 1.71: 1.63–1.81) increased the risk of hypertension, but living in forest Guinea (AOR: 0.88: 0.83–0.93), being Soussou (AOR: 0.88: 0.85–0.92) decreased the risk. In rural area, living in forest Guinea (AOR: 2.14: 2.03–2.26), being Soussou (AOR: 1.14: 1.12–1.17) increased the risk of hypertension, but female sex (AOR: 0.96: 0.94–0.98), living in lower Guinea (AOR: 0.87: 0.85–0.89), being Maninka (AOR: 0.94: 0.92–0.97), being Nguerze (AOR: 0.50: 0.47–0.52) decreased the risk. Conclusion Hypertension is a major problem in the elderly population in Guinea, and the level of treatment and control in elderly with known hypertension is inadequate. The place of hypertension among cardiovascular diseases and the identification of associated factors underlines the need to develop innovative approaches to control this major risk factor.

Abstract

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

Abstract

The ideal band gap for a photovoltaic active layer for the solar spectrum is around 1.3 eV. However oxides with such values are rare. One of the most studied oxides to date as a photovoltaic active layer is the cuprous oxide Cu2O. Its band gap is around 2.1 eV and is therefore not ideal for the solar spectrum. Power Conversion Efficiency generally do not exceed 4%. In this paper we propose to study an emerging type of solar cell that is based on ferroelectricity. In this type of solar cell, a p-n junction is not necessarily required, unlike conventional solar cells. Interesting conversion efficiencies are beginning to be obtained with this type of cell, however the mechanisms are still not well understood and several material and engineering challenges must be addressed. The objective of this paper is to initiate an innovative photovoltaic technology based on novel inorganic with suitable bandgap widths and organic materials (biopolymer). These oxides are more stables. We synthesized ferroelectric materials that absorb a large part of the solar spectrum with reduced bandgap widths. PZN-4.5PT nanoparticles were dispersed in a biopolymer matrix. Hybrid thin films with these inorganic nanoparticles embedded in a biopolymer have been successfully fabricated by spin coating on ITO substrate. Structural, morphological and electrical properties were investigated. The best Power Conversion Efficiencies measure under a light LED illumination of 3550 lux are respectively 21.83 % and 31.62 % for 15 and 30 min light exposition with an open-circuit voltage of 5.17 and 5.86 V.

Abstract

Introduction. The vertical route of hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission is a significant problem in African countries, which is characterized by late diagnosis of the disease and high mortality. The high prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in Africa may be due to variability in the HBV preCore/Core region, mutations in which contribute to disease progression. Molecular genetic characterization of strains circulating among pregnant women may reflect the overall mutational profile of the pathogen in the population. The objective of this study was to analyze the variability of the HBV preCore/Core region circulating among pregnant women in the Republic of Guinea. Materials and methods. The study material included 480 plasma samples obtained from HBV-positive pregnant women from the Republic of Guinea. For all samples, the nucleotide sequences of the preCore/Core region of the HBV genome were sequenced and analyzed. Results. Amino acid variability in the preCore region was determined in 211 (43.96%), and in the Core region in 473 (98.54%) patients. 12 polymorphic sites of the preCore region were identified in which amino acid substitutions occurred, including 8, 2 and 5 positions identified for genotypes E, A and D, respectively. In the Core region, 67 substitution positions were identified, including 46 in samples of genotype E, 23 in HBV genotype A and 26 in genotype D. It was shown that the distribution of substitutions in the preCore and Core regions in HBV genotypes E, A and D differs significantly with a predominance in mutations among HBV genotype E — p 0.0001. Individual characteristic mutations have been identified for each genotype. The most common clinically significant mutations in the preCore/Core region in the study group were identified, including pc-H5D (27,08%), pc-W28* (35,21%), c-E64D (33,54%), c-L116I/V/G (91,46 %), c-T146N (73,13%). The double mutation A1762T/G1764A in the basal core promoter was shown in 74 samples of HBV genotype E, which accounted for 15.42% of the total group and 16.59% of patients with HBV genotype E. Conclusion. The frequency of clinically significant preCore/Core mutations among pregnant women in the Republic of Guinea was determined. The data obtained reflect their prevalence in the general population and can be used to predict the progression of chronic HBV among the region's population.

Abstract

Data from satellite, aircraft, drone, and ground-based measurements have already shown that canopy-scale sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is tightly related to photosynthesis, which is linked to vegetation carbon assimilation. However, our ability to effectively use those findings are hindered by confounding factors, including canopy structure, fluctuations in solar radiation, and sun–canopy geometry that highly affect the SIF signal. Thus, disentangling these factors has become paramount in order to use SIF for monitoring vegetation functioning at the canopy scale and beyond. Active chlorophyll fluorescence measurements (FyieldLIF), which directly measures the apparent fluorescence yield, have been widely used to detect physiological variation of the vegetation at the leaf scale. Recently, the measurement of FyieldLIF has become feasible at the canopy scale, opening up new opportunities to decouple structural, biophysical, and physiological components of SIF at the canopy scale. In this study, based on top-of-canopy measurements above a mature deciduous forest, reflectance (R), SIF, SIF normalized by incoming photosynthetically active radiation (SIFy), FyieldLIF, and the ratio between SIFy and FyieldLIF (named Φk) were used to investigate the effects of canopy structure and shadows on the diurnal and seasonal dynamics of SIF. Further, random forest (RF) models were also used to not only predict FyieldLIF and Φk, but also provide an interpretation framework by considering additional variables, including the R in the blue, red, green, red-edge, and near-infrared bands; SIF; SIFy; and solar zenith angle (SZA) and solar azimuth angle (SAA). Results revealed that the SIF signal is highly affected by the canopy structure and sun–canopy geometry effects compared to FyieldLIF. This was evidenced by the weak correlations obtained between SIFy and FyieldLIF at the diurnal timescale. Furthermore, the daily mean SIF‾y captured the seasonal dynamics of daily mean F‾yieldLIF and explained 58 % of its variability. The findings also revealed that reflectance in the near-infrared (R-NIR) and the NIRv (the product of R-NIR and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)) are good proxies of Φk at the diurnal timescale, while their correlations with Φk decrease at the seasonal timescale. With FyieldLIF and Φk as outputs and the abovementioned variables as predictors, this study also showed that the RF models can explain between 86 % and 90 % of FyieldLIF, as well as 60 % and 70 % of Φk variations under clear-sky conditions. In addition, the predictor importance estimates for FyieldLIF RF models revealed that R at 410, 665, 740, and 830 nm; SIF; SIFy; SZA; and SAA emerged as the most useful and influential factors for predicting FyieldLIF, while R at 410, 665, 705, and 740 nm; SZA; and SAA are crucial for predicting Φk. This study highlighted the complexity of interpreting diurnal and seasonal dynamics of SIF in forest canopies. These dynamics are highly dependent on the complex interactions between the structure of the canopy, the vegetation biochemical properties, the illumination angles (SZA and SAA), and the light conditions (ratio of diffuse to direct solar radiation). However, such measurements are necessary to better separate the variability in SIF attributable to radiation and measurement conditions from the subtler variability attributable to plant physiological processes.
