Master’s thesis Curriculum in Landscape Architecture This study focuses on the revitalization of urban riverside areas using a collaborative approach that combines living labs and participatory design. The problem at hand is the decline in the quality of public spaces in riverside areas due to neglect, inaccessibility, and lack of community engagement. The main objective of this study is to identify key opportunities associated with using participatory design to improve the urban riverside environment, and to develop effective strategies to improve the existing landscape elements based on people's needs. To achieve this aim, the study uses a range of methods, including interviews with local residents, site surveys and assessments, focus group discussions with experts, and a WAVE workshop with international participants. These methods are used to engage local stakeholders and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the needs and preferences of the community. The main results of the study demonstrate the effectiveness of living labs and participatory design in addressing the decline in public spaces in riverside areas. The living decks concept provides a framework for developing public spaces that are safe, accessible, and multifunctional, while also meeting the needs of local residents and stakeholders. The study highlights the importance of collaboration and engagement in the design process, as well as the potential for future research to build on these findings and to further improve the quality of public spaces in riverside areas.

Master’s thesis Curriculum in Landscape Architecture City streets are important arteries for urban communities and the city’s economy. They form a large part of the public space of cities. The streets play an important role in promoting the economy and intra-urban mobility by offering residents and people the opportunity to move there on foot, by bicycle, by car or by public transport. The richness and vitality of cities requires well-thought-out street design. Street planning requires thorough preliminary work and cooperation among experts in their field to find the best possible solution. The aim of this master’s thesis is to find out which solutions that support the environment can be used in street planning and whether and how to implement them in the Estonian climate. In order to find answers to the questions, a thorough literature search was conducted and a total of nine interviews with local government experts, road engineers and landscape architects were conducted. The results obtained were thoroughly analyzed. The obtained results were applied as example solutions in the conceptual design of the streets of Karlova district. The example solutions revealed which principles could be taken into account in the landscape architectural planning of streets and which techniques would be expedient to implement in Estonia, Tartu. The results of the research could be useful for people in the entire planning field, giving an overview of the main aspects of user-friendly and sustainable urban street planning. Linnatänavad on olulised arterid linna kogukondade ja linna majanduse jaoks. Need moodustavad suure osa linnade avalikust ruumist.

Tartu Forseliuse school is a proud and historical school, but the schoolyard is overlooked. The aim of this work is to make the school yard livelier, leaving as many elements in the yard as they are and adding new ones. The elements must be liked by students of different ages. The work is inspired by websites that talk about the need for versatile schoolyards and sites of companies that make design for schoolyards. Before writing the design plan, the schoolyard has been analyzed from several sides and different levels. By the end of the design plan, the school yard will become tidy, correct and modest place for everyone to have a nice break.

Master’s Thesis Curriculum in Landscape Architecture The following thesis researches informal natural wild spaces. These areas are known as problematic and unused spaces, however, as natural areas in an urban environment, they have significant unrecognized potential. This study aims to define informal natural spaces in Tartu and research what the residents' perceptions are in connection to unmaintained and wild green areas. Two methodologies have been used; the first was to create a typology of informal green spaces in Tartu. For the second methodology, an online questionnaire was conducted amongst Tartu residents to find out how locals determine informal urban wild spaces, how they are used, what is valued and what changes are wanted to see. As a result, it was found that Tartu residents had primarily positive opinions about informal wild spaces. Locals benefit from being in these areas that formal parks may not provide. Important values were opportunities to do different activities in natural areas, be in fresh air, quiet and natural environment. The main concerns were considered poor access and untidiness, which included unmaintained vegetation and litter. People's opinions and perceptions about these areas are much influenced by their own preferences. For example, some did not like unmaintained and wild vegetation, but others did. The results show the potential of informal spaces. The following studies can explore how informal green spaces could be improved and included in urban planning processes. Käesolev lõputöö uurib Tartu mitteametlikke looduslikke rohealasid. Neid alasid peetakse tihti problemaatilisteks kasutamata aladeks, kuid loodulike aladena linna keskkonnas on neil suur ära tundmata potentsiaal. Tulemused näitavad, milline on mitteametlike alade potentsiaalsus. Järgnevates uurimustes on võimalik uurida, kuidas saaks mitteametlikke rohealasid täiendada ja kaasata linnaplaneerimises.

Bakalaureusetöö Keskkonna planeerimise ja maastikukujundus õppekaval The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to study and get to know better the urban nature and the possibilities of wildness in the city. In addition to the literature review, existing projects and the natural composition of the city of Tartu have been analyzed. Wild urban nature is possible when people can appreciate the benefits of nature and are ready to accept the new urban aesthetics, which is the opposite of the current excessive regularity. As a result of research and analysis, the Supilinna Park has been created, which connects man and nature. More experimentation is needed with the creation of wildlife in the urban environment to see opportunities for self-regulation and a fresh environment. Master’s thesis Curriculum in Landscape Architecture Blue-Health is a major academic research project conducted by the team of the chair of landscape architecture that involves other researchers from more European schools too. It focuses on the connection between blue-spaces, environment and human’s health and well-being. People’s health benefits connecting with the green environment has been abundantly discussed in the field of landscape architecture and urban design while blue-environment has come to focus shortly. As landscape architects, our try is to bridge the gap between human and nature(blue-space) with innovative design proposals. Time and cost may hinder the process but virtual reality is a growing field that is being massively used in this type of experiments now. This dissertation aims to test the potentiality of VR in blue-health based design interventions and to fill the gap of research following this method. The assessment process of those designs ensures maximum public participation by running an online survey with visual simulations of the proposed interventions and this dissertation adds insights, suggestions and supplements the greater blue-health and design research. Nende disainilahenduste hindamisprotsess tagab üldsuse maksimaalse osaluse, korraldades veebipõhise uuringu koos visuaalsete simulatsioonidega kavandatavatest sekkumistest. See väitekiri lisab teadmisi, ettepanekuid ja täiendab ulatuslikumaid sinise tervise ja disaini alaseid uuringuid.

Master thesis in landscape architecture This thesis is looking at the patterns of use on the informal blue and green spaces in Northern Tallinn using behaviour mapping. Vacant and neglected landscapes can be found in practically every city across the world. These areas are often unseen and unvalued, having negative perception and stay unchanged and decaying until being sold for some big development project. Vacant and derelict areas form a valuable part of urban land and provide the city and its residents various opportunities and benefits. The following thesis uses behaviour mapping to find out how are the vacant areas in Northern Tallinn used and who are the users. In addition it is researched what different factors affect the uses and users of these sites. The results concluded that the selected vacant areas in Northern Tallinn are not empty and without any users. In fact, they are used by numerous different users, both men, women, children and elderly for different kinds of recreational activities.

Master’s thesis Curriculum in Landscape Architecture Nowadays there seems to be a growing need for many-sided blue or green nature experiences to improve the aspects of one’s life quality. Due to the fact that formal blueand greenspaces are not fulfilling the needs of city dwellers any longer, the use of informal blue- and greenspaces has started to grow more interest. One example of this kind of behaviour is the BlueHealth project’s case study area in Northen Tallinn, known as Kopliranna. The aim of this thesis is to find out how people use the informal greenspace of Kopliranna and other formal and/or informal blue- and greenspaces in Tallinn, what aspects of the Kopliranna area are concerning its users, and if and how small-scale interventions implemented on the site change people’s perception of the informal greenspace. To find answers to the research questions, altogether 40 interviews were conducted with the users of blue- and greenspaces in the area of Kopli and on the site of Kopliranna and later analysed in-depth. The results of the analysis brought out how people use the informal greenspace of Kopliranna, and other formal and informal blue- and greenspaces around Tallinn; eight predominant topics concerning the site of Kopliranna; and the change in perception, after the small-scale interventions done at the informal greenspace, towards positive. The results of the research might benefit the ongoing BlueHealth project, since it offers an in-depth post intervention survey. Even so there a further research should be taken into consideration in order to find out why some of the predominant topics are continually actual and create additional mitigation measures so the experience of the informal greenspace would be even more fulfilling. Uurimistöö tulemused võivad olla kasuks käimasolevale BlueHealth projektile, kuna tegemist on põhjaliku sekkumisjärgse uuringuga. Sellegipoolest tuleks kaaluda täiendavaid teadusuuringuid, et selgitada välja miks teatud teemad on endiselt aktuaalsed ning luua täiendavaid leevendusmeetmeid, muutmaks mitteametlikku roheala kasutajasõbralikumaks.

Master thesis Curriculum of Landscape Architecture Urbanization has placed a lot of pressure on formal greenspaces to fulfill all the needs of the residents. In recent years, researchers have started to look towards informal greenspaces for potential solutions. In Estonia, there is not much research done about informal greenspaces and there is also a lack of design ideas for these spaces. This thesis aimed to find out what is distinctive for informal greenspaces in Northern Tallinn, what type of informal greenspaces can be found in Northern Tallinn, and what kind of evidence of use and co-management by users can be found from informal greenspaces in Northern Tallinn. To find the answers to these questions, twenty-eight case study sites in Northern Tallinn were analyzed through map analysis and field study. This provided sufficient information to answer all the research questions. The results of this thesis might provide beneficial information for the municipality of Northern Tallinn and landscape architects and planners to come up with solutions and strategies for these spaces that would meet the needs of the residents. Linnastumine on avaldanud ametlikele rohealadele suure surve rahuldada kõigi elanike vajadusi.

Master thesis of Landscape Architecture Vacant land exists in every city all over the world as a result of processes such as deindustrialization, population growth and shifts in economy. Previously used industrial areas and housing complexes are abandoned or demolished, leaving behind undeveloped spaces, allowing nature to take over the space by spontaneous vegetation. In time, these areas turn into green spaces, acting as links in the green infrastructure and offering the possibility for informal use for the surrounding residents. The following thesis aims to find out how vacant land is currently informally used in Northern Tallinn, where the previously mentioned processes have changed the landscape extensively, leaving behind vacant spaces. This work is analysing 18 different case study sites in Northern Tallinn, which would enable us to see what spatial characteristics define the use of vacant land. This thesis is divided into three parts, which are literature review, analysis and discussion of the results. Literature review looks at different topics dealing with vacant lots, its value as a part of green infrastructure, how we perceive them and how they are used, and Northern Tallinn’s land uses changes along with the current general plan. Analysis part concentrates on the chosen case study sites, to see the characteristics and uses of the spaces and create typologies about the use of vacant land and typologies based on the spatial characteristics of the sites. Discussion part focuses on answering the research questions that were set for the thesis and see how they correspond to the literature. Tühermaad eksisteerivad linnades üle terve maailma selliste protsesside tulemusena nagu deindustrialiseerimine, rahvastiku kasv ja muutused majanduses. Varasemalt kasutatud tööstusalad ja elamukompleksid jäetakse maha või lammutatakse, jättes maha arendamata ruumi, mille võtab üle spontaanne taimestik. Aja jooksul muutuvad sellised alad rohealadeks, mis toimivad ühendustena rohevõrgustikus ja pakuvad ümbritsevatele elanikele võimalust mitteametlikuks kasutuseks. Käesolev magistritöö uurib, kuidas Põhja-Tallinnas hetkel tühermaid mitteformaalselt kasutatakse, kus on eelnevate protsesside mõjul maastik oluliselt muutunud, jättes maha tühje alasid.

The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis is to create functional urban space by considering economical, social and environmental aspects. Based on that, connections are created and fixed between river Emajõgi and surrounding areas, turning the project area into sustainable and pedestrian-friendly public space. It is done conceptually by the result of analysis through two aspects. Firstly, the areas surrounding Turu street are connected into functional integrated whole, by providing logical linear pedestrian paths to eliminate its conflicts between parking lots and barriers. Secondly, provide pedestrians opportunities to reach river Emajõgi by new connections, that were previously closed or nonexistent.

bakalaureusetööd ,kujundusprojektid - Abstract
Bakalaureusetöö maastikuarhitektuuri eriala The given project was composed as Eesti Maaülikooli Põllumajandu- ja keskkonnainstituudi maastikuarhitektuuri graduation thesis. The thesis contains some solutions about how to change the residential and business areas of Hiinalinna site in Tartu. The aim of the project according to the given scenario was to create residential and business areas along with the place of public use in Hiinalinna. There was a requirement that they should be created by either renovating or replacing existing buildings and development of public space should be be connected with the housing areas with the diverse landscape, so the aim was to introduce an appropriate project that would be connected with the rest of the Tartu. The solution was to create an access to the closed territory that is not being used (highways, pedestrian roads/pavements) and give new opportunities of using the area by adding new functions of public use. Also, by adding active usage and development in the future.

The contents of this document are the sole responsibility of the Estonian University of Life Sciences and can under no circumstances be regarded as reflecting the position of the Programme, Programme participating countries, alongside with the European Union. One of the goals of the project “GreenMan” (ELRI-177) is to develop a system for managing urban green areas in the border regions of Estonia, Latvia and Russia while enhancing the cooperation between specialists in urban green space planning and universities focusing on green space planning and management. One of the outcomes of the “Green Education” work package executed by the Estonian University of Life Sciences is this manual and the accompanying study course on green space management. The manual gathers together and presents good practices for maintaining urban green spaces. All the issues are viewed in the context of the environmental, social and economic challenges of the new century such as better use of limited natural as well as economic resources, enhancing biodiversity and dealing with the pressures caused by increasing numbers of city dwellers, their lack of everyday contact with nature and their need for recreation. Traditional ornamental parks and gardens can only look their best and function well where there are sufficient financial resources, suitable equipment and well-trained staff to manage and maintain them. In their absence it may be a necessary to look at alternative and innovative practices that save money and require lower intensities of all types of inputs. The manual is mainly intended to help the staff of local municipalities to focus their available resources in the most efficient way onto the most important maintenance activities and to nurture and care for the often sensitive plants under their care which, if incorrectly treated can be lost or their value diminished. The manual presents an overview of all the relevant topics of urban green space management and provides the most up to date information about what to focus on in preparing management plans, what maintenance works to order and how to make sure the tasks are properly fulfilled while securing a high quality end result. The recommendations presented in this manual are based on expert reports made within the framework of the project as well as from a wide range of recent high quality and relevant literature on the topic. No references are given directly in the text but all base materials are listed at the end of the manual. All illustrations are provided by Labie Koki. We hope that the manual will be used as the first point of reference and that as many of the recommendations as possible will be followed. Urban green space is as important a part of the infrastructure of an urban area as the roads, services and communications and should be given the same degree of protection and maintenance. The contents of this document are the sole responsibility of the Estonian University of Life Sciences and can under no circumstances be regarded as reflecting the position of the Programme, Programme participating countries, alongside with the European Union.
