The evolve-filter (EF) model is a filter-based numerical stabilization for under-resolved convection-dominated flows. EF is a simple, modular, and effective strategy for both full-order models (FOMs) and reduced-order models (ROMs). It is well-known, however, that when the filter radius is too large, EF can be overdiffusive and yield inaccurate results. To alleviate this, EF is usually supplemented with a relaxation step. The relaxation parameter, however, is very sensitive with respect to the model parameters. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy to alleviate the EF overdiffusivity for a large filter radius. Specifically, we leverage the variational multiscale (VMS) framework to separate the large resolved scales from the small resolved scales in the evolved velocity, and we use the filtered small scales to correct the large scales. Furthermore, in the new VMS-EF strategy, we use two different ways to decompose the evolved velocity: the VMS Evolve-Filter-Filter-Correct (VMS-EFFC) and the VMS Evolve-Postprocess-Filter-Correct (VMS-EPFC) algorithms. The new VMS-based algorithms yield significantly more accurate results than the standard EF in both the FOM and the ROM simulations of a flow past a cylinder at Reynolds number Re = 1000.

This paper presents a projection-based reduced order modelling (ROM) framework for unsteady parametrized optimal control problems (OCP$_{(\mu)}$s) arising from cardiovascular (CV) applications. In real-life scenarios, accurately defining outflow boundary conditions in patient-specific models poses significant challenges due to complex vascular morphologies, physiological conditions, and high computational demands. These challenges make it difficult to compute realistic and reliable CV hemodynamics by incorporating clinical data such as 4D magnetic resonance imaging. To address these challenges, we focus on controlling the outflow boundary conditions to optimize CV flow dynamics and minimize the discrepancy between target and computed flow velocity profiles. The fluid flow is governed by unsteady Navier--Stokes equations with physical parametric dependence, i.e. the Reynolds number. Numerical solutions of OCP$_{(\mu)}$s require substantial computational resources, highlighting the need for robust and efficient ROMs to perform real-time and many-query simulations. Here, we aim at investigating the performance of a projection-based reduction technique that relies on the offline-online paradigm, enabling significant computational cost savings. The Galerkin finite element method is used to compute the high-fidelity solutions in the offline phase. We implemented a nested-proper orthogonal decomposition (nested-POD) for fast simulation of OCP$_{(\mu)}$s that encompasses two stages: temporal compression for reducing dimensionality in time, followed by parametric-space compression on the precomputed POD modes. We tested the efficacy of the methodology on vascular models, namely an idealized bifurcation geometry and a patient-specific coronary artery bypass graft, incorporating stress control at the outflow boundary, observing consistent speed-up with respect to high-fidelity strategies.

The approximate deconvolution Leray reduced order model (ADL-ROM) uses spatial filtering to increase the ROM stability, and approximate deconvolution to increase the ROM accuracy. In the under-resolved numerical simulation of convection-dominated flows, ADL-ROM was shown to be significantly more stable than the standard ROM, and more accurate than the Leray ROM. In this paper, we prove a priori error bounds for the approximate deconvolution operator and ADL-ROM. To our knowledge, these are the first numerical analysis results for approximate deconvolution in a ROM context. We illustrate these numerical analysis results in the numerical simulation of convection-dominated flows.

Galerkin reduced order models (ROMs), e.g., based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) or reduced basis methods, have achieved significant success in the numerical simulation of fluid flows. The ROM numerical analysis, however, is still being developed. In this paper, we take a step in this direction and present a survey of a priori error bounds, with a particular focus on POD-based ROMs. Specifically, we outline the main components of ROM a priori error bounds, emphasize their practical importance, and discuss significant contributions to a priori error bounds for ROMs for fluids.

This paper explores an iterative coupling approach to solve linear thermo-poroelasticity problems, with its application as a high-fidelity discretization utilizing finite elements during the training of projection-based reduced order models. One of the main challenges in addressing coupled multi-physics problems is the complexity and computational expenses involved. In this study, we introduce a decoupled iterative solution approach, integrated with reduced order modeling, aimed at augmenting the efficiency of the computational algorithm. The iterative coupling technique we employ builds upon the established fixed-stress splitting scheme that has been extensively investigated for Biot's poroelasticity. By leveraging solutions derived from this coupled iterative scheme, the reduced order model employs an additional Galerkin projection onto a reduced basis space formed by a small number of modes obtained through proper orthogonal decomposition. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through numerical experiments, showcasing its computational prowess.

In this work, we present the modelling and numerical simulation of a molten glass fluid flow in a furnace melting basin. We first derive a model for a molten glass fluid flow and present numerical simulations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). We further discuss and validate the results obtained from the simulations by comparing them with experimental results. Finally, we also present a non-intrusive Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to efficiently handle scenarios which require multiple simulations of the fluid flow upon changing parameters of relevant industrial interest. This approach lets us obtain solutions of a complex 3D model, with good accuracy with respect to the FEM solution, yet with negligible associated computational times.

In this paper, we propose a novel ROM stabilization strategy for under-resolved convection-dominated flows, the approximate deconvolution Leray ROM (ADL-ROM). The new ADL-ROM introduces AD as a new means to increase the accuracy of the classical Leray ROM (L-ROM) without degrading its numerical stability. We also introduce two new AD ROM strategies: the Tikhonov and van Cittert methods. Our numerical investigation for convection-dominated systems shows that, when the filter radius is relatively large, the new ADL-ROM is more accurate than the standard L-ROM. Furthermore, the new ADL-ROM is less sensitive with respect to model parameters than L-ROM.

We propose, analyze, and investigate numerically a novel feedback control strategy for high Reynolds number flows. For both the continuous and the discrete (finite element) settings, we prove that the new strategy yields accurate results for high Reynolds numbers that were not covered by current results. We also show that the new feedback control yields more accurate results than the current control approaches in marginally-resolved numerical simulations of a two-dimensional flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers $Re=1000$. We note, however, that for realistic control parameters, the stabilizing effect of the new feedback control strategy is not sufficient in the convection-dominated regime. Our second contribution is the development of an adaptive evolve-filter-relax (aEFR) regularization that stabilizes marginally-resolved simulations in the convection-dominated regime and increases the accuracy of the new feedback control in realistic parameter settings. For the finite element setting, we prove that the novel feedback control equipped with the new aEFR method yields accurate results for high Reynolds numbers. Furthermore, our numerical investigation shows that the new strategy yields accurate results for reduced order models that dramatically decrease the size of the feedback control problem.

We present a theoretical and computational model for the behavior of a porous solid undergoing two interdependent processes, the finite deformation of a solid and species migration through the solid, which are distinct in bulk and on surface. Nonlinear theories allow us to systematically study porous solids in a wide range of applications, such as drug delivery, biomaterial design, fundamental study of biomechanics and mechanobiology, and the design of sensors and actuators. As we aim to understand the physical phenomena at a smaller length scale towards comprehending the fundamental biological processes and the miniaturization of devices, the surface effect becomes more pertinent. Although existing methodologies provide the necessary tools to study coupled bulk effects for deformation and diffusion; however, very little is known about fully coupled bulk and surface poroelasticity at finite strain. Here we develop a thermodynamically consistent formulation for multiphysics processes of surface and bulk poroelasticity, specialized for soft hydrated solids, along with a corresponding finite element implementation. Our multiphysical approach captures the interplay between competing processes of finite deformation and species diffusion through the bulk and surface, and provides invaluable insight when surface effects are important., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures

In the context of simulation-based methods, multiple challenges arise, two of which are considered in this work. As a first challenge, problems including time-dependent phenomena with complex domain deformations, potentially even with changes in the domain topology, need to be tackled appropriately. The second challenge arises when computational resources and the time for evaluating the model become critical in so-called many query scenarios for parametric problems. For example, these problems occur in optimization, uncertainty quantification (UQ), or automatic control and using highly resolved full-order models (FOMs) may become impractical. To address both types of complexity, we present a novel projection-based model order reduction (MOR) approach for deforming domain problems that takes advantage of the time-continuous space-time formulation. We apply it to two examples that are relevant for engineering or biomedical applications and conduct an error and performance analysis. In both cases, we are able to drastically reduce the computational expense for a model evaluation and, at the same time, to maintain an adequate accuracy level. All in all, this work indicates the effectiveness of the presented MOR approach for deforming domain problems taking advantage of a time-continuous space-time setting.

In this manuscript we propose and analyze weighted reduced order methods for stochastic Stokes and Navier-Stokes problems depending on random input data (such as forcing terms, physical or geometrical coefficients, boundary conditions). We will compare weighted methods such as weighted greedy and weighted POD with non-weighted ones in case of stochastic parameters. In addition we will analyze different sampling and weighting choices to overcome the curse of dimensionality with high dimensional parameter spaces.

In this chapter we examine reduced order techniques for geometrical parametrized heat exchange systems, Poisson, and flows based on Stokes, steady and unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes and Cahn-Hilliard problems. The full order finite element methods, employed in an embedded and/or immersed geometry framework, are the Shifted Boundary (SBM) and the Cut elements (CutFEM) methodologies, with applications mainly focused in fluids. We start by introducing the Nitsche's method, for both SBM/CutFEM and parametrized physical problems as well as the high fidelity approximation. We continue with the full order parameterized Nitsche shifted boundary variational weak formulation, and the reduced order modeling ideas based on a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Galerkin method and geometrical parametrization, quoting the main differences and advantages with respect to a reference domain approach used for classical finite element methods, while stability issues may overcome employing supremizer enrichment methodologies. Numerical experiments verify the efficiency of the introduced ``hello world'' problems considering reduced order results in several cases for one, two, three and four dimensional geometrical kind of parametrization. We investigate execution times, and we illustrate transport methods and improvements. A list of important references related to unfitted methods and reduced order modeling are [11, 8, 9, 10, 7, 6, 12].

The aim of this work is to present a model reduction technique in the framework of optimal control problems for partial differential equations. We combine two approaches used for reducing the computational cost of the mathematical numerical models: domain-decomposition (DD) methods and reduced-order modelling (ROM). In particular, we consider an optimisation-based domain-decomposition algorithm for the parameter-dependent stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Firstly, the problem is described on the subdomains coupled at the interface and solved through an optimal control problem, which leads to the complete separation of the subdomain problems in the DD method. On top of that, a reduced model for the obtained optimal-control problem is built; the procedure is based on the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition technique and a further Galerkin projection. The presented methodology is tested on two fluid dynamics benchmarks: the stationary backward-facing step and lid-driven cavity flow. The numerical tests show a significant reduction of the computational costs in terms of both the problem dimensions and the number of optimisation iterations in the domain-decomposition algorithm.

We perform a variational analysis of an elastic membrane spanning a closed curve which may sustain bending and torsion. First, we deal with parametrized curves and linear elastic membranes proving the existence of equilibria and finding first-order necessary conditions for minimizers computing the first variation. Second, we study a more general case, both for the boundary curve and for the membrane, using the framed curve approach. The infinite dimensional version of the Lagrange multipliers' method is applied to get the first-order necessary conditions. Microfluidics proved to be a key technology in various applications, allowing to reproduce large-scale laboratory settings at a more sustainable small-scale. The current effort is focused on enhancing the mixing process of different passive species at the micro-scale, where a laminar flow regime damps turbulence effects. Chaotic advection is often used to improve mixing effects also at very low Reynolds numbers. In particular, we focus on passive micromixers, where chaotic advection is mainly achieved by properly selecting the geometry of microchannels. In such a context, reduced order modeling can play a role, especially in the design of new geometries. In this chapter, we verify the reliability and the computational benefits lead by a Hierarchical Model (HiMod) reduction when modeling the transport of a passive scalar in an S-shaped microchannel. Such a geometric configuration provides an ideal setting where to apply a HiMod approximation, which exploits the presence of a leading dynamics to commute the original three-dimensional model into a system of one-dimensional coupled problems. It can be proved that HiMod reduction guarantees a very good accuracy when compared with a high-fidelity model, despite a drastic reduction in terms of number of unknowns., Comment: 17 pages

In this work the development of a machine learning-based Reduced Order Model (ROM) for the investigation of hemodynamics in a patient-specific configuration of Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) is proposed. The computational domain is referred to left branches of coronary arteries when a stenosis of the Left Main Coronary Artery (LMCA) occurs. The method extracts a reduced basis space from a collection of high-fidelity solutions via a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) algorithm and employs Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for the computation of the modal coefficients. The Full Order Model (FOM) is represented by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations discretized using a Finite Volume (FV) technique. Both physical and geometrical parametrization are taken into account, the former one related to the inlet flow rate and the latter one related to the stenosis severity. With respect to the previous works focused on the development of a ROM framework for the evaluation of coronary artery disease, the novelties of our study include the use of the FV method in a patient-specific configuration, the use of a data-driven ROM technique and the mesh deformation strategy based on a Free Form Deformation (FFD) technique. The performance of our ROM approach is analyzed in terms of the error between full order and reduced order solutions as well as the speedup achieved at the online stage.

We propose a unified data-driven reduced order model (ROM) that bridges the performance gap between linear and nonlinear manifold approaches. Deep learning ROM (DL-ROM) using deep-convolutional autoencoders (DC-AE) has been shown to capture nonlinear solution manifolds but fails to perform adequately when linear subspace approaches such as proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) would be optimal. Besides, most DL-ROM models rely on convolutional layers, which might limit its application to only a structured mesh. The proposed framework in this study relies on the combination of an autoencoder (AE) and Barlow Twins (BT) self-supervised learning, where BT maximizes the information content of the embedding with the latent space through a joint embedding architecture. Through a series of benchmark problems of natural convection in porous media, BT-AE performs better than the previous DL-ROM framework by providing comparable results to POD-based approaches for problems where the solution lies within a linear subspace as well as DL-ROM autoencoder-based techniques where the solution lies on a nonlinear manifold; consequently, bridges the gap between linear and nonlinear reduced manifolds. We present a partitioned Model Order Reduction method for multiphysics problems, that is based on a semi-implicit treatment of the coupling conditions, and on a projection scheme. The proposed Reduced Order Method is based on the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and on a Galerkin projection onto the reduced basis spaces; we aim of addressing both time-dependent and time-dependent, parametrized Fluid-Structure Interaction problems, where the fluid is incompressible and the structure is linear, elastic and two dimensional.
