Abstract

Background: Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in COVID-19 patients outside of intensive care unit (ICU) settings was a feasible support during the pandemic outbreak. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an “on the job” NIV training program provided to 66 nurses working in 3 COVID-19 wards in an Italian university hospital. Methods: A quasi-experimental longitudinal before–after study was designed. The NIV Team education program, provided by expert ICU nurses, included: 3 h sessions of training on the job during work-shifts about the management of helmet-continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) Venturi systems, and NIV with oronasal and full-face masks. An eleven-item “brief skills self-report tool” was administered before and after the program to explore the perception of NIV education program attendees about their level of skills. Results: In total, 59 nurses responded to the questionnaire. There was an improvement in the skill levels of the management of Helmet-CPAP (median before training 2, inter-quartile range (IQR) 0–6; median after training 8, IQR 3–9; p < 0.0001), and mask-NIV (median before training 2, IQR 0–6; median after training 8, IQR 3–9; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Training on the job performed by expert ICU nurses can be a valuable and fast means to implement new Helmet-CPAP and mask-NIV skills outside of ICUs.

Il contributo intende affrontare la prassi statutaria dei più recenti partiti politici, al fine di evidenziare la "crisi" della democrazia interna delle organizzazioni politiche. Ciò, almeno, sotto un duplica aspetto. Da un lato sono codificate regole che attribuiscono ampi poteri a pochi soggetti. Dall'altro, vi è la tendenza a superare le regole statutarie, privilegiando le scelte e ed i diktat di coloro che guidano il partito politico. Nella parte finale del contributo si dialoga con il futuro legislatore al fine di individuare alcune linee guida per una disciplina organica dei partiti politici.

Contains fulltext : 220630.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access), Background: Anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) adherence is suboptimal. ava®, a reusable electromechanical self-injection device (e-Device) developed for certolizumab pegol (CZP) administration, aims to overcome some barriers to increase adherence. This study evaluates patient experience of the e-Device and its training materials and determines patient device preference.Methods: CZP-treated patients were recruited from the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. Patients completed a pre-injection Assessment of Self-Injection (ASI) questionnaire investigating self-injection perception. After training, patients administered 3 consecutive self-injections using the e-Device, patient experience of each was assessed using the post-injection ASI. An additional questionnaire evaluated training materials. After Injection 3, patients indicated their preference: the e-Device or their previous device.Results: 59 patients participated; most rated the e-Device highly for satisfaction, self-confidence and ease of use. The (negative) feelings and pain and skin reactions domains had low ratings. Post-injection ASI domain scores were similar following each of the 3 e-Device injections. Training materials were rated highly (video: 8.4/10; step-by-step guide: 8.4/10). 57.1% (32/56) patients preferred the e-Device over their previous self-injection device.Conclusions: Patients were satisfied with the e-Device and most preferred it over other self-injection devices. By improving patient experience, the e-Device may help increase medication adherence.

© 2017 American Chemical Society.The design and use of materials in the nanoscale size range for addressing medical and health-related issues continues to receive increasing interest. Research in nanomedicine spans a multitude of areas, including drug delivery, vaccine development, antibacterial, diagnosis and imaging tools, wearable devices, implants, high-throughput screening platforms, etc. using biological, nonbiological, biomimetic, or hybrid materials. Many of these developments are starting to be translated into viable clinical products. Here, we provide an overview of recent developments in nanomedicine and highlight the current challenges and upcoming opportunities for the field and translation to the clinic.

Publicado em: The Proceedings of the XIIIth International Symposium on Amyloidosis, May 6-10, 2012, Groningen, The Netherlands In Familial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy, the amyloid deposition of mutant transthyretin TTR V30M can lead to renal complications. An unexplored mechanism is the toxicity of oligomeric TTR aggregates. A subset of renal progenitor cells (RPC) in the adult human kidney can induce regeneration of podocytes and tubular structures of the nephron, which can be critical for preventing irreversible renal failure. We assessed whether RPC are vulnerable, in vitro, to TTRV30M oligomers. RPC proliferation was reduced by 16.3±9.7% and 32.6±6.3% after 48 and 72 hours, respectively, in the presence of the oligomers. However, oligomers did not induce apoptosis or alterations in cell cycle to any significant extent, and did not influence RPC differentiation into podocytes. From this first attempt, we can say that TTRV30M oligomers inhibit RPC proliferation but do not influence their capacity to differentiate into mature podocytes, and thus should not compromise tissue regeneration. Abstract

The application of nanotechnology to contemporary neuroscience promotes innovative solutions that may be useful for brain and spinal cord repair strategies after damage. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a novel form of carbon made of rolled layers of graphite. Since their discovery CNTs appeared immediately interesting materials, due to their remarkable properties. In fact, depending on their structure, CNTs are both immensely strong and mechanically fl exible. In addition, CNTs exhibit useful properties allowing nanotubes to conduit electrical current between electrochemical interfaces. CNTs are scaffolds composed of small tubes with diameters similar to those of neural processes, thus particularly attractive for neuroscience research applications. It is not clear whether CNTs, simply due to their intrinsic structure, could directly improve the rewiring of disconnected neuronal networks. In this chapter, we discuss the use of CNTs as scaffolds able to impact and sustain neuronal network.
