Abstract

Background and aim: COVID-19 patients with severe heart or respiratory failure are potential candidates for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Indications and management of these patients are unclear. Our aim is to describe the results of a prospective registry of COVID-19 patients treated with ECMO.Methods: An anonymous prospective registry of COVID-19 patients treated with veno-arterial (V-A) or veno-venous (V-V) ECMO was created on march 2020. Clinical, analytical and respiratory preimplantation variables, implantation data and post-implantation course data were recorded. The primary endpoint was all cause in-hospital mortality. Secondary events were functional recovery and the combined endpoint of mortality and functional recovery in patients followed at least 3 months after discharge.Results: Three hundred and sixty-six patients from 25 hospitals were analyzed, 347 V-V ECMO and 18 V-A ECMO patients (mean age 52.7 and 49.5 years respectively). Patients with V-V ECMO were more obese, had less frequently organ damage other than respiratory failure and needed less inotropic support; Thirty three percent of V-A ECMO and 34.9% of V-A ECMO were discharged (P = NS). Hospital mortality was non-significantly different, 56.2% versus 50.9% respectively, mainly during ECMO therapy and mostly due to multiorgan failure. Other 51 patients (14%) remained admitted. Mean follow-up was 196 +/- 101.7 days (95%CI: 170.8-221.6). After logistic regression, body weight (OR 0.967, 95%CI: 0.95-0.99, P = 0.004) and ECMO implantation in the own centre (OR 0.48, 95%CI: 0.27-0.88, P = 0.018) were protective for hospital mortality. Age (OR 1.063, 95%CI: 1.005-1.12, P = 0.032), arterial hypertension (3.593, 95%CI: 1.06-12.19, P = 0.04) and global (2.44, 95%CI: 0.27-0.88, P = 0.019), digestive (OR 4,23, 95%CI: 1.27-14.07, P = 0.019) and neurological (OR 4.66, 95%CI: 1.39-15.62, P = 0.013) complications during ECMO therapy were independent predictors of primary endpoint occurrence. Only the post-discharge day at follow-up was independent predictor of both secondary endpoints occurrence.Conclusions: Hospital survival of severely ill COVID-19 patients treated with ECMO is near 50%. Age, arterial hypertension and ECMO complications are predictors of hospital mortality, and body weight and implantation in the own centre are protective. Functional recovery is only predicted by the follow-up time after discharge. A more homogeneous management of these patients is warranted for clinical results and future research optimization. 12. Determining transpiration coefficients of ‘Rojo Brillante’ persimmon trees under Mediterranean climatic conditions

Abstract

There is scarce knowledge on what are the actual water requirements of persimmon trees (Diospyros kaki). Research on this topic is required to better adjust irrigation water supplies to the actual crop water needs. This study aimed to determine the transpiration coefficients (K) of persimmon ‘Rojo Brillante’ trees and assess how transpiration and K are influenced by environmental factors and the atmospheric demand under Mediterranean climatic conditions. This was done over the course of three growing seasons by means of sap flow measurements calibrated with whole canopy gas exchange chambers. Irrigation was applied aiming to avoid water limiting conditions for trees. This was verified by monitoring the trees’ water status across the growing seasons. Sap flow measurements were linearly and highly correlated (p < 0.001) with canopy transpiration (E) obtained with the whole canopy chambers, but either overestimated or underestimated it. E increased from April until June-July in response to canopy development and increased midday canopy light interception. There was a positive linear relationship between daily E, reference evapotranspiration (ET) and solar radiation. However, a non-linear relationship was obtained between E and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). A positive non-linear relationship (p < 0.01) was observed between K (E / ET in non-limited water conditions) and VPD, illustrating the low stomatal regulation that persimmon trees exhibit in response to air dryness. K varied over the growing seasons following the ET pattern although showing comparatively a slighter decrease during the last part of the growing season. From June to September, K of persimmon ‘Rojo Brillante’ trees with a midday photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted of ~30 % ranged from 0.45 to 0.56. A strong relationship was obtained between K and percentage of midday intercepted PAR that can be used to estimate K of persimmon ‘Rojo Brillante’ trees with a range of ground canopy covers.

15. Effects of three frequencies of irrigation and nitrogen rates on lint yield, nitrogen use efficiency and fibre quality of cotton under furrow irrigation

Abstract

Practical solutions to optimise nitrogen use efficiency within modern surface irrigated cotton systems in Australia may be possible by regulating the frequency of water and reducing the N applied, compared with typical current practises. A two-year study examined the effect of irrigating at three different water deficits that applied a similar total irrigation volume: >−60 kPa (HF), between −80 and −100 kPa (IF) and between −100 and −120 kPa (LF) for a period from initial flowering throughout boll development, in combination with different nitrogen fertiliser rates on the growth, yield, nitrogen use efficiency and lint quality of cotton. It was hypothesised that shorter deficits would increase N uptake, and nitrogen use efficiency compared with longer deficits caused by consistently higher soil water potentials in the root zone. The major effects of irrigation treatment on growth was to increase plant height and number of bolls, delay crop maturity and decrease micronaire. The irrigation strategy according to yield was most consistently optimised over both seasons when soil matric potential was maintained between −80 and −100 kPa (IF treatment). Lint yield was reduced by 9–13% when the irrigation deficit was <−100 kPa. The most efficient fertiliser use varied between the two years but was always lowest in the treatment with the highest deficit. Irrigation deficit did not change nitrogen uptake or internal nitrogen use efficiency. Nitrogen, even at rates substantially lower than typically used commercially, did not affect fibre quality. There was no interaction between irrigation strategy and N fertiliser rate on yield, fibre quality and fertiliser use efficiency.

Abstract

Treball Final de Màster Universitari en Ensenyament i Adquisició de la Llengua Anglesa en Contextos Multilingües (Pla de 2013) (A distància). Codi: SAY531. Curs: 2019/2020 New technologies in education and, especially in English as a foreign language learning, have been gradually integrated into Spanish primary education schools. However, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this integration, thus transforming the way that information and communication technologies (ICTs) were used in the classroom. This TFM gives examples of methodologies based on a fundamental use of the new technologies such as Flipped Classroom, as well as examples of programs and APPS for the teaching of each skill, with their limitations and their positive points respect to in-class work. This TFM also investigates if Spanish primary English teachers, students, and schools were prepared for adapting the teaching and learning process to this new situation by asking primary education English teachers’ about their experiences through a semi-closed questionnaire. Results show differences between teaching and learning experiences in face-to-face vs online class, as there still exist a lot of limitations which difficult online learning. Likewise, it has been proven that the value of oral skills worked online depends on teachers’ previous knowledge about new technologies. Moreover, primary education teachers have increased their working loads and they believe that ICT resources will never substitute them. This TFM concludes that new technologies offer a new vision and structure of education that will never be so close to in-class’ situation and structure as we want them to pretend, but that teachers and society have to learn how to integrate them in students’ syllabuses, as new technologies may not only be seen as a complement but also as a mean of teaching and learning.

18. Effects of leaning grapevine canopy to the West on water use efficiency and yield under Mediterranean conditions

Abstract

This study tested the possibility of improving whole-canopy water use efficiency (WUE) of grapevines (cv. Bobal) by maximizing radiation interception during the mornings and limiting this during the afternoons, when the vapour pressure deficit and the evaporative demand are higher. The three-year study consisted of two trials conducted in parallel on North-South row oriented potted- and field-grown grapevines. In both trials, performance in terms of vine water use, yield and WUE in a vertical shoot positioned (VSP) system was compared with that of vines leaned 30° towards West (WSP). Potted vines were fully irrigated, whereas field-grown vines were submitted to rain-fed and deficit irrigation conditions. In potted plants, there was no difference in daily transpiration between vines from the WSP and VSP treatments, but transpiration in the mornings was higher in WSP vines. Dry matter and berry size increased in WSP compared to VSP vines. In the field, watering regime had a greater effect than canopy inclination on vine performance. Nonetheless, the WSP system increased leaf area by 13%, yield by 12% and WUE by 11% compared to VSP, although differences in WUE were not statistically significant and the effect on yield was negligible under rain-fed conditions. In both trials, the WSP system did not have a major effect on grape composition (soluble solids, pH, total acidity, concentrations of anthocyanins and polyphenols). In conclusion, this pioneering three-year study proved that leaning vine canopies to the West increased grapevine performance despite the great effect that environmental conditions exerted each year on the data obtained. Further research is required to study the effects of different patterns of light interception on carbon balance and grape biochemical composition.

Abstract

Debido a las crecientes limitaciones en el uso de agua en agricultura, cobra gran importancia la evaluación de la respuesta de los cítricos a diferentes estrategias y sistemas de riego. El objetivo de este estudio ha sido evaluar el rendimiento de la clementina “Arrufatina” en respuesta a diversos sistemas de riego superficial (G) y subterráneo (GS) con 7 (G7, GS7) y 14 emisores (G14, GS14) por planta dispuestos en doble línea, así como un tercer tratamiento subterráneo (GSA), idéntico a GS7; pero equipado con una línea adicional subterránea dispuesta entre filas de árboles. El efecto de los tratamientos se evaluó en términos de producción, calidad de la fruta, eficiencia del uso del agua (EUA) y ahorro de agua. Los resultados muestran que, en promedio de los tres años de estudio, el ahorro de agua con el sistema GS puede llegar a ser del 23% en comparación con G, sin mermas en la producción ni en la calidad de la fruta, incrementando por lo tanto la EUA. El sistema GSA fue el tratamiento que empleó menor volumen de agua de riego y obtuvo mayor rendimiento productivo en comparación con G7, alcanzado ahorros de agua entre el 22,4 y el 27,9%. Abstract

El cultivo del caqui está ganando relevancia en muchas zonas semiáridas del mundo. Es el caso del sudeste español, donde el régimen pluviométrico es incapaz de suplir las necesidades hídricas de los cultivos y donde, además, el riego por goteo se impone como medio de aportar a las plantas agua y nutrientes. En esta revisión se pretende resumir la información existente en la literatura científica sobre el riego y la nutrición de esta especie, como también sobre la respuesta del cultivo al estrés hídrico. De todo ello se concluye que el caqui es particularmente exigente en agua durante la época estival, momento en el que el coeficiente de cultivo (Kc) alcanza valores próximos a 1. Por otra parte, las técnicas de riego deficitario controlado (RDC) también se han ensayado en este cultivo, revelándose como una herramienta Útil para reducir la caída fisiológica del fruto e influir sobre la producción final. Asimismo, una restricción tardía favorece un ligero adelanto de la maduración del fruto, permitiendo avanzar la recolección, si bien a cambio de un menor calibre. En este artículo también se pretende dar referencias respecto de las necesidades nutricionales de variedades astringentes y no astringentes. Por último, se plantea de manera crítica la necesidad de profundizar en el estudio de las relaciones hídricas de esta especie así como en las necesidades nutricionales en condiciones de limitación del recurso.

24. Assessment of in-season cotton nitrogen status and lint yield prediction from unmanned aerial system imagery

Abstract

The present work assessed the usefulness of a set of spectral indices obtained from an unmanned aerial system (UAS) for tracking spatial and temporal variability of nitrogen (N) status as well as for predicting lint yield in a commercial cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) farm. Organic, inorganic and a combination of both types of fertilizers were used to provide a range of eight N rates from 0 to 340 kg N ha−1. Multi-spectral images (reflectance in the blue, green, red, red edge and near infrared bands) were acquired on seven days throughout the season, from 62 to 169 days after sowing (DAS), and data were used to compute structure- and chlorophyll-sensitive vegetation indices (VIs). Above-ground plant biomass was sampled at first flower, first cracked boll and maturity and total plant N concentration (N%) and N uptake determined. Lint yield was determined at harvest and the relationships with the VIs explored. Results showed that differences in plant N% and N uptake between treatments increased as the season progressed. Early in the season, when fertilizer applications can still have an effect on lint yield, the simplified canopy chlorophyll content index (SCCCI) was the index that best explained the variation in N uptake and plant N% between treatments. Around first cracked boll and maturity, the linear regression obtained for the relationships between the VIs and both plant N% and N uptake was statistically significant, with the highest r2 values obtained at maturity. The normalized difference red edge (NDRE) index, and SCCCI were generally the indices that best distinguished the treatments according to the N uptake and total plant N%. Treatments with the highest N rates (from 307 to 340 kg N ha−1) had lower normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) than treatments with 0 and 130 kg N ha−1 at the first measurement day (62 DAS), suggesting that factors other than fertilization N rate affected plant growth at this early stage of the crop. Abstract

Patterns of root abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation ([ABA](root)), root water potential (psi(root)), and root water uptake (RWU), and their impact on xylem sap ABA concentration ([X-ABA]) were measured under vertical partial root-zone drying (VPRD, upper compartment dry, lower compartment wet) and horizontal partial root-zone drying (HPRD, two lateral compartments: one dry, the other wet) of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). When water was withheld from the dry compartment for 0-10 d, RWU and Psi(root) were similarly lower in the dry compartment when soil volumetric water content dropped below 0.22 cm(3) cm(-3) for both spatial distributions of soil moisture. However, [ABA](root) increased in response to decreasing Psi(root) in the dry compartment only for HPRD, resulting in much higher ABA accumulation than in VPRD. The position of the sampled roots (similar to 4 cm closer to the surface in the dry compartment of VPRD than in HPRD) might account for this difference, since older (upper) roots may accumulate less ABA in response to decreased Psi(root) than younger (deeper) roots. This would explain differences in root ABA accumulation patterns under vertical and horizontal soil moisture gradients reported in the literature. In our experiment, these differences in root ABA accumulation did not influence [X-ABA], since the RWU fraction (and thus ABA export to shoots) from the dry compartment dramatically decreased simultaneously with any increase in [ABA](root). Thus, HPRD might better trigger a long-distance ABA signal than VPRD under conditions allowing simultaneous high [ABA](root) and relatively high RWU fraction.

Abstract

Interactive applications with 3D graphics are used everyday in a lot of different fields, such as games, teaching, learning environments and virtual reality. The scenarios showed in interactive applications usually tend to present detailed worlds and characters, being the most realistic as possible. Detailed 3D models require a lot of geometric complexity. But not always the available graphics hardware can handle and manage all this geometry maintaining a realistic frame rate. Simplification methods attempt to solve this problem, by generating simplified versions of the original 3D models. These simplified models present less geometry than the original ones. This simplification has to be done with a reasonable criterion in order to maintain as possible the appearance of the original models. But the geometry is not the only important factor in 3D models. They are also composed of additional attributes that are important for the final aspect of the models for the viewer. In the literature we can find a lot of work presented about simplification. However, there are still several points without an efficient solution. Therefore, this thesis focuses on simplification techniques for 3D models usually used in interactive applications.

36. Two potato (Solanum tuberosum) varieties differ in drought tolerance due to differences in root growth at depth

Abstract

To test the hypothesis that root growth at depth is a key trait explaining some genotypic differences in drought tolerance in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), two varieties (Horizon and Maris Piper) differing in drought tolerance were subjected to different irrigation regimes in pots in a glasshouse and in the field under a polytunnel. In the glasshouse, both cultivars showed similar gas exchange, leaf water potential, leaf xylem ABA concentration and shoot biomass independently of whether plants were grown under well watered or water deficit conditions. Under well watered conditions, root growth was three-fold higher in Horizon compared with Maris Piper, 3 weeks after emergence. Water deficit reduced this difference. In the polytunnel, applying 60% or less irrigation volume compared with full irrigation significantly decreased tuber yield in Maris Piper but not in Horizon. This was coincident with the higher root density of Horizon in deep soil layers (>40 cm), where water content was stable. The results suggest that early vigorous root proliferation may be a useful selection trait for maintaining yield of potato under restricted irrigation or rainfall, because it rapidly secures access to water stored in deep soil layers. Although selecting for vigorous root growth may assist phenotyping screening for drought tolerance, these varieties may require particular environmental or cultural conditions to express root vigour, such as sufficiently deep soils or sufficient water shortly after emergence.

Abstract

Background: Recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of acute aortic syndrome should improve the outcome of this disease. The Spanish Registry of Acute Aortic Syndrome aimed to assess current results in acute aortic syndrome management in a wide cohort of hospitals in the same geographical area.Methods: From January 2012 to January 2014, 26 tertiary hospitals included 629 consecutive patients with acute aortic syndrome: 73% men, mean age 64.7±14 years (range 22–92), 443 type A (70.4%) and 186 type B (29.6%).Results: Time elapsed between symptom onset and diagnosis was <12 hours in 70.7% of cases and <24 hours in 84.0% (median 5 hours; 25th–75th percentiles, 2.7–15.5 hours). Computed tomography was the first diagnostic technique in 78% of patients and transthoracic echocardiography in 15%. Surgical treatment was indicated in 78.3% of type A acute aortic syndrome. The interval between diagnosis and surgery was 4.8 hours (quartile 1–3, 2.5–11.4 hours). Among the patients with type B acute aortic syndrome, treatment was medical in 116 cases (62.4%), endovascular in 61 (32.8%) and surgical in nine (4.8%). Type A mortality during hospitalisation was 25.1% in patients treated surgically and 68% in those treated medically. Mortality in type B was 13.8% in those with medical treatment, 18.0% with endovascular therapy and 33.0% with surgical treatment.Conclusion: Improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of acute aortic syndrome have not resulted in a significant reduction in hospital mortality. The results of this study reflect more overall and less selected information on acute aortic syndrome management and the need for sustained advances in the therapeutic strategy of acute aortic syndrome.
