Abstract

The project was funded by a research grant from INSEAD and was also supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation under grant number 143411., In this crowdsourced initiative, independent analysts used the same dataset to test two hypotheses regarding the effects of scientists’ gender and professional status on verbosity during group meetings. Not only the analytic approach but also the operationalizations of key variables were left unconstrained and up to individual analysts. For instance, analysts could choose to operationalize status as job title, institutional ranking, citation counts, or some combination. To maximize transparency regarding the process by which analytic choices are made, the analysts used a platform we developed called DataExplained to justify both preferred and rejected analytic paths in real time. Analyses lacking sufficient detail, reproducible code, or with statistical errors were excluded, resulting in 29 analyses in the final sample. Researchers reported radically different analyses and dispersed empirical outcomes, in a number of cases obtaining significant effects in opposite directions for the same research question. A Boba multiverse analysis demonstrates that decisions about how to operationalize variables explain variability in outcomes above and beyond statistical choices (e.g., covariates). Subjective researcher decisions play a critical role in driving the reported empirical results, underscoring the need for open data, systematic robustness checks, and transparency regarding both analytic paths taken and not taken. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hyponatraemia is a prognostic marker of increased mortality and morbidity in selected groups of hospitalised patients. The aim of the present study was to examine the prevalence and prognostic significance of hyponatraemia at hospital admission in an unselected population with a broad spectrum of medical and surgical diagnoses.METHODS: Consecutive patients >40 years of age admitted to a general district hospital in Greater Copenhagen between 1 April 1998 and 31 March 1999. Median follow-up time was 5.16 years (range 0-4372 days). Plasma sodium measurements were available in 2960 patients, and hyponatraemia defined as P-Na(+) <137 mmol/L at hospital admission was present in 1105 (37.3 %) patients.RESULTS: One-year mortality was higher for hyponatraemic patients than for normonatraemic patients: 27.5% versus 17.7%. Moreover, hyponatraemia was an independent predictor of short and long-term all-cause mortality after 1 year and after the entire observation period respectively: hazard ratio (HR) 1.6 (95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.4-1.9, P < 0.0001) and HR 1.4 (95 % CI 1.3-1.6, P < 0.0001). Patients with hyponatraemia had longer hospitalisations than patients with normonatraemia: 7.6 (±0.38) days vs 5.6 (±0.21) days, P < 0.001. There was no interaction between hyponatraemia at admission and any admission diagnoses (P > 0.05 for all interaction analyses).CONCLUSION: Hyponatraemia is associated with increased all-cause mortality and longer admission length independently of diagnosis and clinical variables.

23. Plasma copeptin levels and prediction of outcome in heart failure outpatients: relation to hyponatremia and loop diuretic doses.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Copeptin, a stable fragment of the vasopressin prohormone, has been shown to be a significant biomarker for morbidity and mortality in heart failure. The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of plasma sodium on the prognostic significance of copeptin concentrations in heart failure outpatients and to determine whether increased copeptin concentrations predict future development of hyponatremia. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 340 heart failure patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction were followed for 55 months (median) in a Danish heart failure clinic. A baseline measurement of plasma copeptin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and sodium was performed, and the sodium concentrations were recorded during 3 months after the baseline visit in the heart failure clinic. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to copeptin tertiles. In multivariate Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for confounders, including plasma sodium, loop diuretic dose, and NT-proBNP, copeptin was a significant predictor of hospitalization or death (hazard ratio 1.4, 95% confidence interval 1.1-1.9; P < .019) but did not predict mortality independently from NT-proBNP. Additionally, copeptin concentrations did not predict future development of hyponatremia. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma copeptin levels predict mortality in outpatients with chronic heart failure independently from clinical variables, plasma sodium, and loop diuretic doses. 25. Morphological effects in auditory word recognition: evidence from Danish.

Abstract

In this study, we investigate the processing of morphologically complex words in Danish using auditory lexical decision. We document a second critical point in auditory comprehension in addition to the Uniqueness Point (UP), namely the point at which competing morphological continuation forms of the base cease to be compatible with the input, henceforth the Complex Uniqueness Point (CUP). Suffixed words with later CUP elicited longer response latencies. We also observed an interaction between suffix frequency and whole-word frequency. Both suffix and whole-word frequency were facilitatory, except for words for which both frequencies are high. For such words, we observed inhibition, and most clearly so for female compared with male participants. Finally, a comparison of complex with simple words revealed that, other things being equal, complex words have a processing advantage compared to simple words. 31. Direct measurements of excited-state lifetimes in Mg, Ca, and Sr†

Abstract

The lifetimes of the lowest ^3S_1 states in Mg, Ca, and Sr have been measured. In addition, the lifetimes of a number of excited ^1S_0 and ^1D_2 states in Ca have been determined, as well as the lifetime of the 4s4p^1P_1 state of Ca. The measurements were made by observing the exponential decay of the intensity of the fluorescence emitted from excited states selectively populated by one- and two-step dye-laser excitation. The values obtained for the ^3S_1 lifetimes were τ(Mg) = (9.7 ± 0.5) ns, τ(Ca) = (11.7 ± 0.6) ns, and τ(Sr) = (12.9 ± 0.7) ns.

Abstract

In this Letter we report the observation of visible emission from the A1 yields X1 transition of the SbCl free radical produced in alkalie atom-SbCl5 reactions. All of the identifiable emission bands are from v' greater than or = to v'' greater than or = 6, making the system a potential blue-green chemical laser candidate. In conclusion, alkali atom-SbCl5 reactions produce chemiluminescence from a vibrationally inverted population distribution in the A1 of SbCl. A simple model has been proposed to account for this selective excitation. Since the excited SbCl is a primary reaction product and is produced with an inverted population, this system appears to be a viable candidate for a blue-green chemical laser.

Abstract

The chemiluminescent reactions of alkali atoms with SCl2 in the presence of a buffer gas can produce a highly inverted population of the vibrational levels of the B state of S2. The results of this work support the suggestion that the S2 B-X transition is an appealing candidate for a visible wavelength chemical laser, especially if the buffer gas relaxes the high vibrational levels of the X state as well as promoting three body recombination of S2.
