5. Well-being and functional abilities in nursing home and home living seniors in Latvia

The society in developed countries is aging. 1.5% of seniors live in nursing homes in Latvia. Aim: to compare functional abilities and well-being between nursing home and home living Latvian seniors. Methods: 280 home living seniors and 285 from nursing homes, age ≥ 65 years able to respond to questions and stand up were included in the study based on availability. They were asked to describe their well-being from very bad to very good. The functional abilities were assessed by hand grip strength, the ability to stand up without assistance, the dependence on caregivers (1 – independent, 2 – partly dependent, 3 – fully dependent), the use of walking device assistance devices. Results:The home living seniors could stand up without assistance of hands more often than nursing home residents (60.4% vs. 38.2%, p < 0.001). The handgrip strength was higher in the elderly community-dwelling women (0.3 (0.2–0.3) vs. 0.2 (0.15–0.2) Ba), p < 0.001. The nursing home residents were less often independent (62.8% vs. 83.9%, p < 0.001), more often partly dependent (30.2% vs. 14.6%, p < 0.001) and independent (7.0% vs. 1.4%, p = 0,001) while performing activities of daily living. The nursing home residents had higher walking device assistance needs (mean rank 345.7 vs. 219.2, p < 0.001) and described their well-being as “good” more often (28.4% vs. 16.8%, p = 0.001) and less often as “bad” or “very bad” (18.9% vs. 26.8%, p = 0.048). Conclusion. The subjective well-being of elderly nurse home residents is better than of home living seniors despite having less functional abilities.

Abstract To navigate through their immediate environment humans process scene information rapidly. How does the cascade of neural processing elicited by scene viewing to facilitate navigational planning unfold over time? To investigate, we recorded human brain responses to visual scenes with electroencephalography and related those to computational models that operationalize three aspects of scene processing (2D, 3D, and semantic information), as well as to a behavioral model capturing navigational affordances. We found a temporal processing hierarchy: navigational affordance is processed later than the other scene features (2D, 3D, and semantic) investigated. This reveals the temporal order with which the human brain computes complex scene information and suggests that the brain leverages these pieces of information to plan navigation.

13. Comparison of the Economic and Environmental Sustainability for Different Peatland Strategies

Previous studies of the literature show that there are great uncertainties regarding costs and gains for peatland restoration strategies and that the monetary estimation of peatland restoration and possible alternatives can be complicated. The research aims to compare the economic costs and benefits of existing peatland restoration strategies and alternative use of peat and peatlands. A core method for the evaluation of the economic aspects of each strategy used is the composite index method. Information for constructing the composite index is based on data from the scientific literature, reports, and local project studies. In the study, peatland strategies, peat extraction, and alternative use in products were mutually compared with existing strategies. The highest composite index among strategies was for the production of insulation boards and cultivation of paludicultures using cattail or sphagnum farming. Cultivation of paludicultures can be an economically viable strategy if costs and gains are evaluated. Cultivation of cattail or sphagnum can make economic gains for landowners and farmers, and solutions for the reduction in necessary initial investments should be sought. Harvested biomass can be used for high-added-value products, in this case, insulation boards from cattail (Typha). Therefore, peat biomass can be used as an economically valuable resource, and raw material for insulation board production is obtained without the extraction of peat. Also, ecosystem services and potential income are not reduced.

Peatlands can become valuable resources and greenhouse gas sinks through the use of different management practices. Peatlands provide carbon sequestration; however, they are also among the greatest greenhouse gas emissions sources. The estimated annual carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from peat worldwide are 220 million tons. Novel strategies, methods, and technologies must be developed to enhance the sustainable use of peatlands and achieve climate targets by 2050, as set forth by the European Commission. There is no consensus in the scientific literature on which strategies included in the policy documents are more fruitful for reducing emissions. There are uncertainties and knowledge gaps in the literature that summarise the cons and benefits of each strategy regarding the potential of GHG emission reduction. Currently, peat is undervalued as a resource in the bioeconomy and innovation—a way that could save costs in peatland management. This review paper aims to analyse existing and potential strategies to minimise greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands. Studies show significant debates in the literature on whether the rewetting of peatlands and afforestation of previously drained peatlands can be defined as restoration. A more effective management of peatland restoration should involve combining restoration methods. The rewetting of peatlands should be realised in combination with top-soil removal to minimise methane emissions. The rewetting of peatlands should be used only in combination with revegetation after rewetting. One of the promising solutions for methane emission reduction could be paludiculture using sphagnum species. Products from paludiculture biomass can reduce GHG emissions and store long-term emissions in products. Paludiculture can also be the solution for further income for landowners and innovative products using the biomass of harvested paludiculture plants.

Summary: Background: The PERFORM study aimed to understand causes of febrile childhood illness by comparing molecular pathogen detection with current clinical practice. Methods: Febrile children and controls were recruited on presentation to hospital in 9 European countries 2016–2020. Each child was assigned a standardized diagnostic category based on retrospective review of local clinical and microbiological data. Subsequently, centralised molecular tests (CMTs) for 19 respiratory and 27 blood pathogens were performed. Findings: Of 4611 febrile children, 643 (14%) were classified as definite bacterial infection (DB), 491 (11%) as definite viral infection (DV), and 3477 (75%) had uncertain aetiology. 1061 controls without infection were recruited. CMTs detected blood bacteria more frequently in DB than DV cases for N. meningitidis (OR: 3.37, 95% CI: 1.92–5.99), S. pneumoniae (OR: 3.89, 95% CI: 2.07–7.59), Group A streptococcus (OR 2.73, 95% CI 1.13–6.09) and E. coli (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.02–6.71). Respiratory viruses were more common in febrile children than controls, but only influenza A (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.11–0.46), influenza B (OR 0.12, 95% CI 0.02–0.37) and RSV (OR 0.16, 95% CI: 0.06–0.36) were less common in DB than DV cases. Of 16 blood viruses, enterovirus (OR 0.43, 95% CI 0.23–0.72) and EBV (OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.56–0.90) were detected less often in DB than DV cases. Combined local diagnostics and CMTs respectively detected blood viruses and respiratory viruses in 360 (56%) and 161 (25%) of DB cases, and virus detection ruled-out bacterial infection poorly, with predictive values of 0.64 and 0.68 respectively. Interpretation: Most febrile children cannot be conclusively defined as having bacterial or viral infection when molecular tests supplement conventional approaches. Viruses are detected in most patients with bacterial infections, and the clinical value of individual pathogen detection in determining treatment is low. New approaches are needed to help determine which febrile children require antibiotics. Funding: EU Horizon 2020 grant 668303.

Agriculture ranks among the key sectors responsible for substantially rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The increase in emissions contributes to the adverse effects of climate change, including threats to biodiversity, the potential for extreme weather events, elevated sea levels, and alterations to ocean currents. The European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is a comprehensive framework that aims to achieve sustainability and advance the agricultural sector’s journey towards climate neutrality by addressing social, economic, and environmental goals. The study aims to evaluate Latvia’s Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan (CAP SP) and to evaluate the impact of the policy. The goal of the study is to determine which objectives are more likely to succeed based on the overall state of Latvia’s agricultural sector and by evaluating the provided information in Latvia’s CAP. The assessment of the CAP SP reveals that there are clear and specific metrics in place for the high-impact goals, particularly those related to addressing climate change and managing resources. According to the TOPSIS analysis, the climate change (SO4) and environmental care (SO5) objectives demonstrate the most significant impact. Objectives associated with European Union policies, such as the National Energy and Climate Plan, European Green Deal, and Farm to Fork strategy, are more likely to succeed than objectives not connected to these or similar policies.

To achieve the climate targets set by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2050, each Member State must develop a National Energy and Climate Plan (hereinafter NECP) containing practical and effective measures to achieve the targets. The research sought a connection between the measures or action lines in the Latvian NECP related to agriculture and forestry, the European Green Deal goals and related strategies. The effectiveness of the agricultural and forestry measures defined in the Latvian NECP was evaluated by defining appropriate indicators, an expert survey and a composite sustainability index. The results show that the effectiveness of agricultural and forestry measures is most influenced by quality, financing, and specificity factors. The lowest-scoring measures were specific measures whose impacts cannot be measured and are not explicitly mentioned in the European Green Deal. Therefore, the description of the measures should be more detailed, with specific activities, indicators to be achieved, and amounts and funding sources planned for each activity.

Summary: Mechanisms of infection and pathogenesis have predominantly been studied based on differential gene or protein expression. Less is known about posttranslational modifications, which are essential for protein functional diversity. We applied an innovative glycoproteomics method to study the systemic proteome-wide glycosylation in response to infection. The protein site-specific glycosylation was characterized in plasma derived from well-defined controls and patients. We found 3862 unique features, of which we identified 463 distinct intact glycopeptides, that could be mapped to more than 30 different proteins. Statistical analyses were used to derive a glycopeptide signature that enabled significant differentiation between patients with a bacterial or viral infection. Furthermore, supported by a machine learning algorithm, we demonstrated the ability to identify the causative pathogens based on the distinctive host blood plasma glycopeptide signatures. These results illustrate that glycoproteomics holds enormous potential as an innovative approach to improve the interpretation of relevant biological changes in response to infection.

27. Spirituality and Sustainability of Interreligious/Interdenominational Dialogue in Theological Study Programs

- Abstract
This article is part of broader research on "The Interrelationship of Theology and Praxis in the Context of Sustainable Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue"1 in which we explore two essential concepts: sustainability and interreligious dialogue. We have narrowed this broader topic to study how facilitation of students' spirituality in theology study programmes develops an environment for sustainability of interdenominational/interreligious dialogue. We provide a theoretical glimpse into research from theology, pedagogy, and spirituality. Our future research process will be based on our findings. One of the current challenges is globalization, which coincides with diversification of cultural norms and moral values. The sustainability provision for our home -- Earth -- suggests new ways to achieve common solutions, not only economically (prosperity) and politically (peace and stability), but also religiously (justice and solidarity) in terms of current changes. But, looking deeper, theology is searching for new definitions for traditional concepts such as "my neighbour", "creation", and "community of believers". Bert Roebben states that the Christian community (and the global community as a whole) needs to find means to "grow in a common humanity" (Roebben, 2018). In this article, we reflect on how a spiritual approach can be methodologically integrated into theology studies to promote spiritual growth and establish sustainable interreligious dialogue: What type of theology should create the foundation of theology study programmes to promote students' spirituality as a prerequisite for sustainability? How does spirituality promote sustainability of interdenominational/interreligious dialogue? Research methodology combines hermeneutic insights on conditions for sustainability of interdenominational/interreligious dialogue, its theological foundations, spiritual practice as a pedagogical basis, and the possibility for implementing sustainable dialogue support mechanisms in theology study programmes. Theology study programmes that promote student spirituality develop an environment for sustainable interdenominational/interreligious dialogue.

Background and Objective: Tonsillar crypts can be considered a reservoir for a variety of bacterial species. Some bacterial species can be considered part of the normal oropharyngeal microbiota. The roles of other pathogens, for example, the so-called non-oral and respiratory pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter spp., which have strong virulence factors, biofilm production capacity, and the ability to initiate infectious diseases, are unclear. The purpose of this study was to detect the presence of S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. within the tonsillar crypts of healthy individuals, and to analyze the pathogens’ biofilm production and antibacterial resistances. Results: Only common oropharyngeal microbiota were cultivated from 37 participant samples (40.7%). The most commonly isolated pathogenic bacterium was S. aureus, which was isolated in 41 (45%) participant samples. K. pneumoniae was isolated in seven (7.7%) samples, Acinetobacter spp. were isolated in five (5.5%) samples, and P. aeruginosa was isolated in two (2.2%) samples. Biofilm producers predominated among the pathogenic bacteria; 51 strains were biofilm producers, and among them, 31 strains were moderate or strong biofilm producers. The tested S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. strains were sensitive to commonly used antibiotics (amoxicillin–clavulanic acid, clindamycin, or ciprofloxacin). One of the isolated S. aureus strains was MRSA. Conclusions: Biofilm is a commonly observed feature that seems to be a naturally existing form of pathogenic bacteria colonizing human tissue. S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. occasionally occur in the tonsillar crypts of healthy individuals, and, therefore, it is most likely that S. aureus, K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp. in opportunistic tonsillar infections originate from the tonsillar crypt microbiota.

Legislative bodies generally keep records of their activities. While the digitization wave spurred the availability of archival documents, their processing remains a challenge. The Swiss parliamentary records are no exception. In this paper we present a supervised pipeline for extracting and structuring of content of archival records. Our pipeline consists of five steps, starting with an assessment of which elements need extraction and how they relate to each other. Step two involves general pre‐processing to prepare the PDF documents and is followed by an element classification step. Step four involves post‐processing and the final step is a validation of the extracted information. With our supervised approach, we are able to process over 200,000 pages of Swiss parliamentary records (spanning the years 1891–1995), a feat that would exceed the budget of most projects using manual curation. We discuss validation of individual steps and offer guidance to researchers engaged in similar data processing efforts. Die gesetzgebenden Organe führen im Allgemeinen Aufzeichnungen über ihre Tätigkeit. Obwohl die Digitalisierungswelle die Verfügbarkeit von Archivdokumenten gefördert hat, bleibt ihre Bearbeitung eine Herausforderung. Die Schweizer Parlamentsakten sind keine Ausnahme. In diesem Beitrag stellen wir eine supervised Pipeline für die Extraktion und Strukturierung von Inhalten aus solchen Archivdokumenten vor. Unsere Pipeline besteht aus fünf Schritten, beginnend mit einem Assessment, welche Elemente extrahiert werden müssen und wie sie zueinander in Beziehung stehen. Der zweite Schritt umfasst eine allgemeines pre‐processing zur Vorbereitung der PDF‐Dokumente, gefolgt von einem Schritt zur Elementklassifizierung. Der vierte Schritt umfasst das post‐processing und der letzte Schritt ist eine Validierung der extrahierten Informationen. Mit unserem supervised Ansatz sind wir in der Lage, über 200.000 Seiten Schweizer Parlamentsakten (aus den Jahren 1891–1995) zu verarbeiten, eine Leistung, die das Budget der meisten Projekte mit manueller Kuration übersteigen würde. Wir erörtern die Validierung der einzelnen Schritte und bieten Forschenden, die sich mit ähnlichen Datenverarbeitungsprozessen beschäftigen, eine Anleitung. Les archives parlementaires suisses ne font pas exception. Dans cet article, nous présentons un pipeline supervisé pour l'extraction et la structuration du contenu de ces documents d'archives. Sebbene la digitalizzazione abbia favorito la disponibilità di documenti d’archivio, il loro trattamento rimane una sfida. I documenti parlamentari svizzeri non fanno eccezione. In questo lavoro presentiamo un canale sorvegliato (“supervised pipeline”) per l’estrazione e la strutturazione del contenuto di tali documenti d’archivio. Il nostro canale consiste in cinque fasi, di cui la prima comporta una valutazione degli elementi da estrarre e delle loro relazioni reciproche. La seconda fase prevede una pre‐elaborazione generale per la preparazione di documenti PDF ed è seguita da una fase di classificazione degli elementi. La quarta fase riguarda la post‐elaborazione, e la fase finale è la validazione delle informazioni estratte. Con questo approccio siamo in grado di elaborare oltre 200.000 pagine di documenti parlamentari svizzeri (che coprono gli anni 1891‐1995), un’impresa che supererebbe il budget della maggior parte dei progetti che utilizzano la gestione manuale. Discutiamo la validazione delle singole fasi e offriamo una guida ai ricercatori e alle ricercatrici impegnate in questo tipo di elaborazione dei dati.

37. Pros and Cons of Strategies to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Peatlands: Review of Possibilities.

Peatlands can become valuable resources and greenhouse gas sinks through the use of different management practices. Peatlands provide carbon sequestration; however, they are also among the greatest greenhouse gas emissions sources. The estimated annual carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from peat worldwide are 220 million tons. Novel strategies, methods, and technologies must be developed to enhance the sustainable use of peatlands and achieve climate targets by 2050, as set forth by the European Commission. There is no consensus in the scientific literature on which strategies included in the policy documents are more fruitful for reducing emissions. There are uncertainties and knowledge gaps in the literature that summarise the cons and benefits of each strategy regarding the potential of GHG emission reduction. Currently, peat is undervalued as a resource in the bioeconomy and innovation—a way that could save costs in peatland management. This review paper aims to analyse existing and potential strategies to minimise greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands. Studies show significant debates in the literature on whether the rewetting of peatlands and afforestation of previously drained peatlands can be defined as restoration. A more effective management of peatland restoration should involve combining restoration methods. The rewetting of peatlands should be realised in combination with top-soil removal to minimise methane emissions. The rewetting of peatlands should be used only in combination with revegetation after rewetting. One of the promising solutions for methane emission reduction could be paludiculture using sphagnum species. Products from paludiculture biomass can reduce GHG emissions and store long-term emissions in products. Paludiculture can also be the solution for further income for landowners and innovative products using the biomass of harvested paludiculture plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Control of Acinetobacter baumannii outbreak in the neonatal intensive care unit in Latvia: whole-genome sequencing powered investigation and closure of the ward

Abstract Background Acinetobacter baumannii is an emerging pathogen capable of causing hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). It has the ability to survive on environmental surfaces for months, making transmission difficult to control. Our report describes the investigation and restriction of an outbreak of A.baumannii in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and multi-modal infection control measures. Methods A prospective surveillance of HAIs was initiated in the NICU at the Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital (PSCUH) in Latvia on 1/9/2012 and identified an outbreak of A.baumannii. Case definitions for A.baumannii bloodstream infection (BSI) and colonization were implemented; surveillance cultures were obtained from all admitted patients to monitor the rate of colonization; an infection prevention and control team was formed and infection control interventions implemented. Environmental sampling of the NICU and Labour ward was performed. We employed WGS to differentiate phenotypically identical multidrug-resistant A.baumannii (MDRAB) strains from simultaneous intrahospital outbreaks in the adult Intensive Care Unit and NICU. Results Between 1/9/2012 and 31/12/2017 the surveillance included 2157 neonates. A total of 17 neonates had A.baumannii BSI, with the highest rate of 30.0 cases per 1000 bed-days in November 2012. Rectal screening samples were positive for A.baumannii-complex in 182 neonates reaching 119.6 per 1000 bed-days in July 2015. All 298 environmental cultures were negative. Two phenotypically identical MDRAB isolates from the simultaneous intrahospital outbreaks were differentiated using WGS, ruling out an inter-ward transmission. Adherence to stringent infection control measures decreased BSI cases but colonization remained persistent. With several relapses, the outbreak was ongoing for four years. No new A.baumannii BSI cases were registered after total environmental decontamination in the NICU in July 2015. Colonization reappeared and persisted until in November 2016 when the ward was temporarily closed, relocated and renovated. No A.baumannii cases were registered after the renovation. Conclusion The HAI surveillance system successfully detected and facilitated the control of the A.baumannii outbreak. Whole-genome sequencing was found to be a useful method for differentiation of phenotypically identical A.baumannii strains from the intrahospital outbreak. Only multi-modal infection control program, including closure, temporary relocation, and renovation of the ward, restricted the outbreak.

The research focuses on the rental housing market in Riga and reveals that among factors that affect the rent level in neighbourhoods of Riga the most are distance from the city centre, neighbourhood safety, quality of housing and transport infrastructure, access to shopping malls, and employment opportunities. The aim of the research is to analyse the housing market in Riga, by putting a special focus on price determinants and lesson keys of Helsinki. Quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in the paper with the biggest contribution being extraction and analysis of data about more than 1800 rental apartments in Riga from the largest Latvian online real estate advertisement platform. Quantitative analysis is based on investigating relationships between average rent levels in different neighbourhoods of Riga and index values of 23 urban environment factors. In addition, the rental housing market in Helsinki is researched, emphasising few guidelines for rental housing market improvements in Riga, such as introducing government subsidies.

43. Latvian Naming Patterns, 1880-1991.

- Abstract
To discover what effects the political, religious, social, and economic climate had on naming children, 100 families (representing almost 700 individuals) were interviewed to identify patterns in first names given over three generations. The sample of 100 families includes people from different religious backgrounds and from different parts of Latvia. Native speakers conducted the interviews. Data were analyzed by time period, religious background, linguistic origin of the name, and the name's origin, meaning, and significance. Results indicate that during the Soviet occupation, significantly more names defined as Latvian were chosen. This is interpreted as a demonstration of Latvian patriotism during this troubling period. To achieve the climate targets set by 2030 and become climate neutral by 2050, each Member State must develop a National Energy and Climate Plan (hereinafter NECP) containing practical and effective measures to achieve the targets. The research sought a connection between the measures or action lines in the Latvian NECP related to agriculture and forestry, the European Green Deal goals and related strategies. The effectiveness of the agricultural and forestry measures defined in the Latvian NECP was evaluated by defining appropriate indicators, an expert survey and a composite sustainability index. The results show that the effectiveness of agricultural and forestry measures is most influenced by quality, financing, and specificity factors. The lowest-scoring measures were specific measures whose impacts cannot be measured and are not explicitly mentioned in the European Green Deal. Therefore, the description of the measures should be more detailed, with specific activities, indicators to be achieved, and amounts and funding sources planned for each activity.

Knowledge-based and innovative bioeconomy is a cornerstone for achieving the goals of the European Green Deal. Due to its comprehensive coverage, bioeconomy performance is challenging to assess unambiguously. This paper presents the results of a cross-country comparison of 22 EU countries applying the Complex Bioeconomy Sustainability Index for 2012-2018. Results were compared with results of the TOPSIS multi-criteria decision-making method on national bioeconomy strategies in Finland, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, and Latvia. The research aims to combine a quantitative assessment of bioeconomy output indicators with a qualitative evaluation of bioeconomy strategies of EU Member States.

A series of symmetric molecules incorporating aryl or pyridyl moieties as central core and 1,4-substituted triazoles as a side bridge was synthesised. The new compounds were investigated as lactate dehydro-genase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27) inhibitors. The cancer associated LDHA isoform was inhibited with IC50 = 117–174 µM. Seven compounds exhibited better LDHA inhibition (IC50 117–136 µM) compared to known LDH inhibitor – galloflavin (IC50 157 µM).
