Highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HoPG) may be the only known monatomic crystal with the ability to host naturally formed moire patterns on its cleaved surfaces, which are coherent over micrometer scales and with discrete sets of twist angles of fixed periodicity. Such an aspect is in marked contrast to twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) and other multilayered systems, where the long range coherence of the moire is not easily maintained due to twist angle disorder. We investigate the electronic and mechanical response of coherent graphite moire patterns through inducing external strain from STM tip-induced deformation. Consequently, unique anisotropic mechanical characteristics are revealed. For example, a lateral widening of one-dimensional (1D) domain walls (DWs) bridging Bernal (ABA) and rhombohedral (ABC) stacking domains (A, B and C refer to the atomic layer positioning), was indicated. Further, in situ tunneling spectroscopy as a function of the deformation indicated a tendency towards increased electrical conductance, which may be associated with a higher density of electronic states, and the consequent flattening of the electronic energy band dispersion. Such features were probed across the DWs, with implications for strain-induced electronic modulation of the moire characteristics.

A methodology to test the interlayer bonding strength of two-dimensional (2D) surfaces and associated one (1D)- and two (2D)- dimensional surface defects using scanning tunneling microscope tip-induced deformation, is demonstrated. Surface elastic deformation characteristics of soft 2D monatomic sheets of graphene and graphite in contrast to NbSe2 indicates related association with the underlying local bonding configurations. Surface deformation of 2D graphitic moire patterns reveal the inter-layer van der Waals strength varying across its domains. These results help in the understanding of the comparable interlayer bonding strength of 1D grain boundary as well as the grains. We describe the possibility for topologically robust edge states existing on interfaces of triangular lattices which are supported by rotational symmetries that are sensitive to boundary conditions. Such states are trivial from the perspective of Berry curvature, but result instead from an interplay between crystalline symmetries and finite boundary effects. Regardless, we show such states are in a distinct topological phase, provided the gauge-dependent symmetries are maintained. Such a model describes a number of recent bosonic experimental demonstrations on triangular lattices, the physics for which has thus far eluded explanation., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. Atomic modulations of two-dimensional materials using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip-induced forces modifies their mechanical and electrical properties. In situ topographic and spectroscopic probing through electrical tunneling has been used for straining sheets of graphite, monolayer graphene and NbSe2. The findings also resolve a thirty-five-year-old controversy involving numerous proposed models to explain the source of anomalously high measured atomic amplitudes (of up to 24 Angstroms, expected 0.2 Angstroms) from atomic corrugation on graphite surfaces. Our findings attributes the anomaly to surface elastic deformation characteristics of soft 2D monatomic sheets of graphene and graphite in contrast to NbSe2 which is associated with their local bonding configurations. The tip-induced deformations are shown to induce controlled strain on the material surface atomically and it offers a new way for strain engineering. Topographic deformation of formed graphitic Moire patterns reveals the inter-layer van der Waals (vdW) strength varying across its domains. In-situ tunneling spectroscopy associated with straining of the Moire domains reveals electronic flat band formation controllably thereby creating a platform for many-body correlations. The paper cautions anomalous observations when probing 2D materials at small gap distances with their strain induced effects and provides guidelines to exploit or avoid this effect.

The latest advances in topological physics have yielded a rich toolset to design highly robust wave transfer systems, for overcoming issues like beam steering and lateral diffraction in surface acoustic waves (SAWs). However, presently used designs for topologically protected SAWs have been largely limited to spin or valley-polarized phases, which rely on non-zero Berry curvature effects. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a highly robust SAW waveguide on lithium niobate (LiNbO3), based on a line defect within a true triangular phononic lattice, which instead employs an intrinsic chirality of phase vortices and maintains a zero Berry curvature. The guided SAW mode spans a wide bandwidth and shows confinement in the lateral direction with 3 dB attenuation within half of the unit-cell length. SAW routing around sharp bends has been demonstrated in such waveguide, with less than ~4% reflection per bend. The waveguide has also been found robust for defect lines with different configurations. The fully on-chip system permits unidirectional SAW modes that are tightly bound to the waveguide, which provides a compact footprint ideal for miniaturization of practical applications and offers insight into the possibility of manipulating highly focused SAW propagation.

Control and manipulation of electromagnetic waves has reached a new level with the recent understanding of topological states of matter. These metamaterials have the potential to revolutionize many areas in traditional electromagnetic design, from highly robust cavities to small footprint waveguides. Much of the past literature has been on the cutting edge of condensed matter physics, but there is now ample opportunity to explore their usage for practical microwave and optical devices. To assist the beginner, in this Tutorial we give a basic introduction to the essential concepts of topological phenomena in electromagnetic systems, including geometric phases, topological invariants, pseudospin states, and the integer/valley/spin quantum Hall effects. Our focus is on engineered photonic topological insulators (PTIs) in two-dimensional systems. We highlight methods for characterizing such structures and how they result in unique wave-guiding properties. In addition, we provide recipes on how to realize PTIs using photonic crystals and metasurfaces, examine differences between different types of PTIs, and discuss limitations and advantages of some of the existing enabling platforms., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, journal article

Confining sound is of significant importance for the manipulation and routing acoustic waves. We propose a Helmholtz resonator (HR) based subwavelength sound channel formed at the interface of two metamaterials, for this purpose. The confinement is quantified through (i) a substantial reduction of the pressure, and (ii) an increase in a specific acoustic impedance (defined by the ratio of the local pressure to the sound velocity) - to a very large value outside the channel. The sound confinement is robust to frequency as well as spatial disorder at the interface, as long as the interface related edge mode is situated within the band gap. A closed acoustic circuit was formed by introducing controlled disorder in the HR units at the corners, indicating the possibility of confining sound to a point.

A methodology for substantially increasing the magnitude of the electrokinetic streaming potential (Vs) from ~ 0.02 V to as large as ~ 1.6 V is proposed. This is done through deploying textured, liquid-filled surfaces (LFS), filled with low viscosity oils, for electrolyte flow. The charge density at the electrolyte-oil interface as well as the enhanced slip may be responsible for enhancement of the Vs. It was found, through experimental analysis as well as computational simulations, that the fluid slip length was inversely proportional to the filling oil viscosity, and influences the Vs. The study provides new perspectives related to complex electrolyte flow conditions as may be relevant for energy harvesting applications., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

It was aimed to determine whether plasma processing could contribute to enhanced capacitance and energy density of activated carbon electrode based electrochemical capacitors, through the formation of additional surface charges. While an increase of up to 35% of the gravimetric capacitance, along with ~ 20% decrease in resistance, was obtained through optimal plasma processing, increased plasma exposure yielded a drastic reduction (/increase) in the capacitance (/resistance). It was also found that the capacitance and resistance modulation was a sensitive function of sample processing as well as electrochemical testing procedure. The relative influence of the capillary, Marangoni, and hydrophobic forces in mediating the evaporation of water from carbon foam based porous media, in response to incident solar radiation, are investigated. It is indicated that inducing hydrophilic interactions on the surface, through nitric acid treatment of the foams, has a similar effect to reduced pore diameter and the ensuing capillary forces. The efficiency of water evaporation may be parameterized through the Capillary number (Ca), with a lower Ca being preferred. It is shown that the consideration of the density of states variation in nanoscale electrochemical systems yields modulations in the rate constant and concomitant electrical currents. The proposed models extend the utility of Marcus-Hush-Chidsey (MHC) kinetics to a larger class of materials and could be used as a test of dimensional character. A method for the most efficient removal of heat, through an anisotropic composite, is proposed. It is shown that a rational placement of constituent materials, in the radial and the azimuthal variation, at a given point in the composite yields a uniform temperature distribution in spherical diffusers, accompanied by a very significant reduction of the source temperature, in principle, to infinitesimally above the ambient temperature, and underlies the design of a perfect thermal diffuser. Orders of magnitude enhanced performance, compared to that obtained through the use of a diffuser constituted from a single material with isotropic thermal conductivity has been observed and the analytical principles underlying the design were validated through extensive computational simulations., Comment: Manuscript with supplementary material

We report on the spreading of triboelectrically charged glass particles on an oppositely charged surface of a plastic cylindrical container in the presence of a constant mechanical agitation. The particles spread via sticking, as a monolayer on the cylinder's surface. Continued agitation initiates a sequence of instabilities of this monolayer, which first forms periodic wavy-stripe-shaped transverse density modulation in the monolayer and then ejects narrow and long particle-jets from the tips of these stripes. These jets finally coalesce laterally to form a homogeneous spreading front that is layered along the spreading direction. These remarkable growth patterns are related to a time evolving frictional drag between the moving charged glass particles and the countercharges on the plastic container. The results provide insight into the multiscale time-dependent tribolelectric processes and motivates further investigation into the microscopic causes of these macroscopic dynamical instabilities and spatial structures., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures

We indicate the fundamental rationale underlying the control of temperature and the manipulation of thermal flux, with reference to a multilayered composite material. We show that when the orientation of the layers in the composite is physically rotated with respect to a constant temperature gradient, there would then be a corresponding introduction of off-diagonal components in the thermal conductivity tensor and thermal anisotropy is induced. The consequent bending of the heat flux lines is found to depend on both the (i) composite rotation angle, as well as the (ii) ratio of the thermal conductivities of the constituent materials.
