Participants who did not drink cola-based soft drinks were assigned to the control group (CG), while participants who drank a cola-based soft drink at least twice a day were assigned to the experimental group (EG). For the CG, foods with staining dyes were restricted. For the EG, there was no restriction on food and patients were asked to rinse their mouths with a cola-based soft drink for 30 s, 4 times daily. For both groups, 2 sessions with three 15 min applications of 35% HP were performed. Shade evaluation was assessed via subjective (VITA classical and VITA bleacheguide shade guides) and objective methods (Easyshade spectrophotometer) at baseline, during bleaching (first, second, and third weeks), and post bleaching (1 week and 1 month). Patients recorded their sensitivity perceptions using a numerical rating scale and 0–10 visual analog scales. Variation in shade guide units and the 2 colors (DE) were evaluated with a Student’s t-test (α = 0.05) and Mann–Whitney test (α = 0.05). Absolute risk of tooth sensitivity and intensity of tooth sensitivity were evaluated by a Chi-square test (α=0.05).Results: Effective bleaching was observed for both groups after 30 days, without statistical difference (p > 0.08). There was no significant difference in absolute risk of bleaching-induced tooth sensitivity between the 2 groups (p = 0.74). Higher and significant scores in pain scales were detected for the EG in comparison to the CG (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Even that the cola-based soft drink exposure during in-office bleaching treatments did not affect the bleaching’s effectiveness; patients reported a higher intensity in bleaching-induced tooth sensitivity.Keywords: dentin sensitivity, dental bleaching, hydrogen peroxide, cola-based soft drink, carbonated beverages, cola, soda

Obtaining a good cosmetic and proper mastication in oral rehabilitation with dental implants are directly linked to the correct positioning of the implant in the alveolar bone. The malposition of the implant is a challenge in rehabilitation, which can often compromise the entire process. In cases of severely malpositioned implants, one has the option to remove it or leave it submerged under bone and gums. Another option is the modified segmental osteotomy that aims repositioning osseointegrated implant with the surrounding bone. The objective of this case report is to present a case where an implant was severely malpositioned after surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion, requiring a modified segmental osteotomy technique to reposition it.

Background: This study investigated procedural errors made during root canal preparation with nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging method. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 human mandibular molars were divided into five groups (n = 20) according to the NiTi system used for root canal preparation: Group 1 - BioRaCe, Group 2 - K3, Group 3 - ProTaper, Group 4 - Mtwo and Group 5 - Hero Shaper. CBCT images were obtained to detect procedural errors made during root canal preparation. Two examiners evaluated the presence or absence of fractured instruments, perforations, and canal transportations. Chi-square test was used for statistical analyzes. The significance level was set at a=5%. Results: In a total of 300 prepared root canals, 43 (14.33%) procedural errors were detected. Perforation was the procedural errors most commonly observed (58.14%). Most of the procedural errors were observed in the mesiobuccal root canal (48.84%). In the analysis of procedural errors, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between the groups of NiTi instruments. The root canals instrumented with BioRaCe had significantly less procedural errors. Conclusions: CBCT permitted the detection of procedural errors during root canal preparation. The frequency of procedural errors was low when root canals preparation was accomplished with BioRaCe system.

The rehabilitation of patients requiring an esthetic smile demands a multidisciplinary approach. This clinical report describes a treatment plan for recovery aesthetics’ smile of anterior teeth using ceramic prosthesis with zirconia structure. Initially, a review of aesthetic parameters, diagnostic waxing, mock-up and provisional restorations was performed. A contextual assessment of aesthetic, proportion and shape of teeth was done to recreate a natural looking for teeth in consonance with the smile line. Subsequently, based on these parameters, fixed prostheses of the upper anterior teeth using ceramic restorations with zirconia infrastructures were performed. The use of ceramic restorations with zirconia structures associated with a careful treatment plan allows the professional to integrate esthetic and function for satisfactory clinical results. Dermoid cysts in oral cavity are unusual lesions. Their etiology is not yet clear and can be associated with trapped cells as a result of the inclusion error resulting in the development into the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm tissues. The aim of this case report is to evidence the presence of a dermoid cyst in the floor of mouth surgically removed. In the present case, the lesion showed soft consistency, floating, regular borders, smooth surface, and the same color as the adjacent mucosa, asymptomatic and measuring 4.5 × 5.5 cm in its greatest diameter. The initial diagnostic was ranula in consequence of the similarity with clinical characteristics and localization. After surgical removal lesion, a fibrotic capsule was identified with a friable material with intensive yellow color. The microscopic exam showed cystic lesion with cavity lined by squamous stratified epithelium hyperorthokeratinized. Cutaneous attachments, such as sebaceous glands and hair follicles, were present in connective adjacent tissue. Surgical intervention is elective in these situations. All dentists must have a thorough knowledge of this unusual lesion.

Root canal and furcal perforations are causes of endodontic therapy failure and different materials that stimulate tissue mineralization have been proposed for perforation treatment. In the first case, a patient presented tooth 46 with unsatisfactory endodontic treatment and a periapical radiographic lesion. A radiolucent area compatible with a perforating internal resorption cavity was found in the mesial root. The granulation tissue was removed, and root canals were prepared. The intracanal medication was composed of calcium hydroxide and the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cement. The 11-year followup showed radiographic repair of the tissue adjacent to the perforation and absence of clinical signs and symptoms or periapical lesion. In the second case, a patient presented with edema on the buccal surface of tooth 46. The examination showed a radiolucent area in the furcation region compatible with an iatrogenic perforation cavity. The mesial root canals were calcified, and only the distal root canal was prepared. The cavity was filled with a calcium hydroxide-based paste and the distal root canal was obturated. In sequence, the perforation cavity was filled with Portland cement. The 9-year followup showed the tooth in masticatory function with radiographic and clinical aspects compatible with normality.

The present study compared the effect of two chronic stress models associated with periodontitis induced in rats on partial lipid profile parameters.Forty-eight rats were divided into 4 groups: physical stress+periodontitis, variable stress+periodontitis, periodontitis and control. Physical stress and variable stress occurred over 60 days. After the first ten days of the stress test, periodontitis was induced by ligature. After 60 days of experimentation, the animals underwent incision and visualization of the posterior vena cava, and blood punctures were performed under a vacuum. Impartial and trained examiners performed the analysis of the parameters: low-density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, triglycerides and cholesterol.The lipid parameters and cholesterol were significantly lower in the variable stress group than in the ligature and control groups. The physical stress group was not statistically different from the other groups. The triglyceride level was highest for the control group and statistically different from the levels in groups variable stress and physical stress. The physical stress group had the lowest triglyceride level, which was statistically different from that of the control group. There was no statistical difference between physical stress and variable stress with respect to low-density lipoprotein; a similar finding was obtained for ligature and control. The variable stress group had the lowest low-density lipoprotein level, which was statistically different from those of the ligature and control groups. High density lipoprotein levels showed no statistical differences between groups.Despite the limitations of the methodology, it seems that the stress model variable associated with periodontitis improved lipid parameters in the study. Traumatic lacerations to the skin are problems frequently seen and treated by emergency centers around the world. Among all wounds, dog and cat bites are commonly seen. As in many mammals, different species of microorganisms are found in dog and cat mouths with a potential pathological effect to humans, as represented by rabies. The injuries have disfiguration effect with possible psychological repercussion to the patient. This article aimed presenting up to date considerations regarding the management of animal bite injuries to the face, exemplified by a case report that should be the interest of all professions that deal with facial tissues, as dentists do.

Meanwhile, cosmetic dentistry has become a bit more complex and technically difficult. With improvement of the properties (physical and optical) of the ceramics and the establishment of a working protocol, ceramic restorations have become increasingly popular. Currently there are several ceramic systems have excellent optical properties such as opalescence, fluorescence, translucency, chromaticity, which allow the restoration to mimic the tooth structure. From the physical point of view has restored biomechanical integrity and strengthening the remaining tooth structure. All this has led the profession to experience the use of new ceramic systems ranging from conventional feldspathic ceramics to modem ceramic reinforced, injected or computer-aid made. The material selection should be based on clinical need, aesthetic and functional requirements, restoration site, prosthetic design and laboratory techniques. In this article we will deal with the characteristics of the materials, their optical properties and clinical considerations for proper selection. Mientras la odontología continúa avanzando, las técnicas estéticas han evolucionado en procedimientos más efectivos, funcionales y biocompatibles. Al mismo tiempo, la odontología estética se ha tornado un poco más compleja y técnicamente dificultosa. Con la mejoría de las propiedades (físicas y ópticas) de las cerámicas y el establecimiento de un protocolo de trabajo, las restauraciones cerámicas se han tornado cada día más populares. Actualmente existen diversos sistemas cerámicos que poseen excelentes propiedades ópticas como opalescencia, fluorescencia, translucidez, cromaticidad, que permiten mimetizar la restauración a la estructura dentaria. Desde el punto de vista físico se ha logrado devolver integridad biomecánica y estructural reforzando al remanente dentario. Todo esto ha llevado a la profesión a experimentar el uso de nuevos sistemas cerámicos que van desde las convencionales cerámicas feldespáticas hasta las modernas cerámicas reforzadas, inyectadas o confeccionadas con auxilio de computadoras. Su selección debe estar basada en la necesidad clínica, exigencias estéticas y funcionales, localización de la restauración, diseño protético y técnicas de laboratorio. Durante este artículo estarán abordadas las características de los materiales, sus propiedades ópticas y consideraciones clínicas para una correcta selección. Among these innovations, development of pure ceramic restorations has evolved to give different alternatives. Dental ceramics have presented a rapidly technological changing to improve mechanical and optical properties. Currently there are several systems of metal free ceramics with excellent mechanical and optical properties, for making crowns and plurals. These modern systems are presented with various compositions and different preparation techniques, making these more versatile. Within this perspective, the dental market offers a huge range of new indirect and metal-free materials for prostheses, providing new options, plus also new questions to decide among the available alternatives. The aim of this review is take a view of the different ceramic systems in terms of its composition and different techniques of production. Los continuos avances en la tecnología, materiales dentales y equipamientos han contribuido significativamente con el nivel que la Odontología estética está logrando hoy. Entre estas innovaciones, el desarrollo de restauraciones de cerámica pura ha evolucionado aportando diferentes alternativas. Las cerámicas han presentado una rápida evolución desde el punto de vista tecnológico con el objetivo de mejorar las propiedades mecánicas y ópticas. En la actualidad existen varios sistemas de cerámicas libres de metal con propiedades mecánicas y ópticas excelentes, para la confección de coronas unitarias y plurales. Estos sistemas modernos se presentan con variadas composiciones y diferentes técnicas de confección, haciendo de estos más versátiles. Dentro de esta perspectiva, el mercado odontológico ofrece una gama enorme de nuevos materiales indirectos y sistemas libres de metal para la confección de prótesis, lo que proporciona nuevas opciones, más también nuevas interrogantes para decidir entre las alternativas disponibles. En este contexto esta revisión de la literatura tiene como objetivo abordar los diferentes sistemas cerámicos del punto de vista de su composición y sus diferentes técnicas de obtención.
