We present a probable experimental signature of collective enhancement in the nuclear level density (NLD) by measuring the neutron and the giant dipole resonance (GDR) $\gamma$ rays emitted from the rare earth $^{169}$Tm compound nucleus populated at 26.1 MeV excitation energy. An enhanced yield is observed in both neutron and $\gamma$ ray spectra corresponding to the same excitation energy in the daughter nuclei. The enhancement could only be reproduced by including a collective enhancement factor in the Fermi gas model of NLD to explain the neutron and GDR spectra simultaneously. The experimental results show that the relative enhancement factor is of the order of 10 and the fadeout occurs at $\sim$ 14 MeV excitation energy, much before the commonly accepted transition from deformed to spherical shape. We also explain how the collective enhancement contribution changes the inverse level density parameter ($k$) from 8 to 9.5 MeV observed recently in several deformed nuclei., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Accepted in Phys. The decay of odd-odd $^{150}$Pm has been studied by populating the nucleus with the $^{150}$Nd(p,n)$^{150}$Pm reaction at E$_{beam}$ = 8.0 MeV using 97$\%$ enriched $^{150}$Nd target. The presence of an isomeric state with $\beta$ decay half life of 2.2(1) h could be identified in $^{150}$Pm by following the half lives of the observed $\gamma$ transitions. The decay of the isomer to the excited levels of $^{150}$Sm has been confirmed by observing the $\gamma - \gamma$ coincidence with the VENUS array of six Compton suppressed Clover HPGe detectors. The $\beta$ decay end-point energies corresponding to the decay from the $^{150g}$Pm and $^{150m}$Pm have been measured using a $\beta-\gamma$ coincidence setup of two thin window Planar HPGe detectors and four Clover HPGe detectors of the VENUS array. The systematics of the similar isomeric states in neighboring nuclei has been studied to understand the underlying structure of these states. Shell model calculation has been performed by using OXBASH code which indicates the presence of a 5$^-$ isomeric state at very low excitation in the nucleus. The calculation also suggests hindered electromagnetic decay of this isomer and supports the possibility of its $\beta$ decay to the excited levels of $^{150}$Sm., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

We present, for the first time, simultaneous determination of shear viscosity ($\eta$) and entropy density ($s$) and thus, $\eta/s$ for equilibrated nuclear systems from $A$ $\sim$ 30 to $A$ $\sim$ 208 at different temperatures. At finite temperature, $\eta$ is estimated by utilizing the $\gamma$ decay of the isovector giant dipole resonance populated via fusion evaporation reaction, while $s$ is evaluated from the nuclear level density parameter (${a}$) and nuclear temperature ($T$), determined precisely by the simultaneous measurements of the evaporated neutron energy spectra and the compound nuclear angular momenta. The transport parameter $\eta$ and the thermodynamic parameter $s$ both increase with temperature resulting in a mild decrease of $\eta$/$s$ with temperature. The extracted $\eta$/$s$ is also found to be independent of the neutron-proton asymmetry at a given temperature. Interestingly, the measured $\eta$/$s$ values are comparable to that of the high-temperature quark-gluon plasma, pointing towards the fact that strong fluidity may be the universal feature of the strong interaction of many-body quantum systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters, 6 pages, 4 figures

The present experimental study illustrates how large deformations attained by nuclei due to cluster formation are perceived through the giant dipole resonance (GDR) strength function. The high energy GDR $\gamma$-rays have been measured from $^{32}$S at different angular momenta ($J$) but similar temperatures in the reactions $^{4}$He(E$_{lab}$=45MeV) + $^{28}$Si and $^{20}$Ne(E$_{lab}$=145MeV) + $^{12}$C. The experimental data at lower J ($\sim$ 10$\hbar$) suggests a normal deformation, similar to the ground state value, showing no potential signature of clustering. However, it is found that the GDR lineshape is fragmented into two prominent peaks at high J ($\sim$ 20$\hbar$) providing a direct measurement of the large deformation developed in the nucleus. The observed lineshape is also completely different from the ones seen for Jacobi shape transition at high $J$ pointing towards the formation of cluster structure in super-deformed states of $^{32}$S at such high spin. In order to understand the performance of the PARIS (Photon Array for the studies with Radioactive Ion and Stable beams) detector, detailed characterization of two individual phoswich (LaBr$_3$(Ce)-NaI(Tl)) elements has been carried out. The detector response is investigated over a wide range of $E_{\gamma}$ = 0.6 to 22.6 MeV using radioactive sources and employing $^{11}B(p,\gamma)$ reaction at $E_p$ = 163 keV and $E_p$ = 7.2 MeV. The linearity of energy response of the LaBr$_3$(Ce) detector is tested upto 22.6 MeV using three different voltage dividers. The data acquisition system using CAEN digitizers is set up and optimized to get the best energy and time resolution. The energy resolution of $\sim$ 2.1% at $E_\gamma$ = 22.6~MeV is measured for the configuration giving best linearity upto high energy. Time resolution of the phoswich detector is measured with a $^{60}$Co source after implementing CFD algorithm for the digitized pulses and is found to be excellent (FWHM $\sim$ 315~ps). In order to study the effect of count rate on detectors, the centroid position and width of the $E_{\gamma}$ = 835~keV peak were measured upto 220 kHz count rate. The measured efficiency data with radioactive sources are in good agreement with GEANT4 based simulations. The total energy spectrum after the add-back of energy signals in phoswich components is also presented., Comment: Accepted in JINST

The effect of temperature (T) and angular momentum (J) on the inverse level density parameter (k) has been studied by populating the compound nucleus $^{97}$Tc in the reaction $^{4}$He + $^{93}$Nb at four incident beam energies of 28, 35, 42 and 50 MeV. For all the four energies, the value of k decreases with increasing J. The T dependence of k has been compared for two angular momentum windows with different theoretical predictions as well as with FTBCS1 calculation which takes into account the quasiparticle-number fluctuations in the pairing field. Interestingly, the experimental data are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations at higher J but deviate from all the calculations at lower J., Comment: 5 Figures and 5 pages

Excitation functions were measured by stacked-foil activation technique for the $^{150}$Nd(p, xpyn) reaction using 97.65$%$ enriched $^{150}$Nd target. Measurement up to $\sim$50$%$ above barrier and down to 18$%$ below the barrier was performed using proton beam energy (E$_p$) of 7 - 15 MeV from VECC Cyclotron. The yield of suitable $\gamma$ rays emitted following the decay of relevant evaporation residues was determined using a 50$%$ High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector.(p,n) cross section was found to follow the expected trend with a maximum value of 63.7(4.9)mb at E$_p$ $\sim$ 8.6 MeV. (p,2n) cross section gradually increased with E$_p$ and had maximum contribution to the total reaction cross section after E$_p$ $\sim$ 9.0 MeV. (p, p$^{\prime}$n) reaction channel also showed a reasonable yield with a threshold of E$_p$ $\sim$ 12.0 MeV. The experimental data were corroborated with statistical model calculations using different codes, viz., CASCADE, ALICE/91 and EMPIRE3.1. All the calculations using a suitable set of global parameters could reproduce the excitation function fairly well in the present energy range.

High energy $\gamma$-ray spectra measured by our group involving the compound nuclei (CN) $^{63}$Cu at excitation energy ($E^*$) $\sim$ 36 MeV with average angular momentum ($J$) = 12 - 17 $\hbar$, $^{97}$Tc at $E^* \sim$ 29 - 50 MeV with $J$ = 12 - 14 $\hbar$, $^{113}$Sb at $E^*$ = 109 MeV and 121 MeV with $J$ = 49 - 59 $\hbar$ and $^{201}$Tl at $E^*$ = 39.5, 47.5 MeV with $J$ = 18 - 24 $\hbar$ have been analyzed utilizing the level density prescriptions of (i)Ignatyuk, Smirenkin and Tishin (IST), (ii)Budtz-Jorgensen and Knitter (BJK), and (iii) Kataria, Ramamurthy and Kapoor (KRK). These three prescriptions have been tested for correct statistical model description of high energy $\gamma$-rays in the light of extracting the giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters at low excitation energy and spin where shell effects might play an important role as well as at high excitation energy where shell effects have melted. Interestingly, only the IST level density prescription could explain the high energy $\gamma$-ray spectra with reasonable GDR parameters for all the four nuclei., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure, Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

The end point energies of nuclear $\beta$ decays have been measured with a segmented planar Ge LEPS detector using both singles and coincidence techniques. The $\beta - \gamma$ coincidence has been performed with a segmented planar Ge LEPS and a single 10$\%$ HPGe detector. The $\gamma$ ray and $\beta$ particle responses of the Segmented planer Ge LEPS detector were studied using monte carlo simulation code GEANT3. The experimentally obtained $\beta$ spectrum was in reasonably good agreement with the simulation results. The experimental end point energies are determined with substantial accuracy for some of the known $\beta$ decays in $^{106}$Rh, $^{210}$Bi and $^{90}$Y. The end point energies corresponding to three weak branches in $^{106}$Rh $\rightarrow$ $^{106}$Pd decay has been measured for the first time., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures and 1 table

The influence of giant dipole resonance (GDR) induced quadrupole moment on GDR width at low temperatures is investigated experimentally by measuring GDR width systematically in the unexplored temperature range $T$=0.8-1.5 MeV, for the first time, in $A$ $\sim$ 100 mass region. The measured GDR widths, using alpha induced fusion reaction, for $^{97}$Tc confirm that the GDR width remains constant at the ground state value up to a critical temperature and increases sharply thereafter with increase in $T$. The data have been compared with the adiabatic Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model (TSFM), phenomenological Critical Temperature Fluctuation Model (CTFM) and microscopic Phonon Damping Model (PDM). Interestingly, CTFM and PDM give similar results and agree with the data, whereas the TSFM differs significantly even after incorporating the shell effects., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The universality of the Critical Temperature included Fluctuation Model (CTFM) in explaining the evolution of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) width as a function of angular momentum is examined in the light of recent experimental data on $^{144}$Sm and $^{152}$Gd. We compare both the data sets with the phenomenological formula based on the CTFM and the thermal shape fluctuation model (pTSFM). The CTFM describes both the data sets reasonably well using the actual ground state GDR width ($\Gamma_0$) values, whereas, the pTSFM describes the $^{144}$Sm data well but is unable to explain the $^{152}$Gd data using a single value of $\Gamma_0$ for two excitation energies. These interesting results clearly indicate that the phenomenological CTFM can be used universally to describe the evolution of the GDR width with both angular momentum and temperature in the entire mass region. The excited states in the odd-$A$ $^{197}$Tl nucleus have been studied by populating them using the $^{197}$Au($\alpha$, 4$n$)$^{197}$Tl reaction at the beam energy of 48 MeV. The $\gamma-\gamma$ coincidence data were taken using a combination of clover, LEPS and single crystal HPGe detectors. Precise spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been done through the polarization and the DCO measurements. A new band structure has been identified and the evidence for a possible intruder $\pi i_{13/2}$ state has been found for the first time. Possible configurations of the observed bands have been discussed. We report on the neutron response of the LAMBDA spectrometer developed earlier for high-energy gamma-ray measurement. The energy dependent neutron detection efficiency of the spectrometer has been measured using the time-of-flight (TOF) technique and compared with that of an organic liquid scintillator based neutron detector (BC501A). The extracted efficiencies have also been compared with those obtained from Monte Carlo GEANT4 simulation. We have also measured the average interaction length of neutrons in the BaF2 crystal in a separate experiment, in order to determine the TOF energy resolution. Finally, the LAMBDA spectrometer has been tested in an in-beam-experiment by measuring neutron energy spectra in the 4He + 93Nb reaction to extract nuclear level density parameters. Nuclear level density parameters obtained by the LAMBDA spectrometer were found to be consistent with those obtained by the BC501A neutron detector, indicating that the spectrometer can be efficiently used as a neutron detector to measure the nuclear level density parameter., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

The extreme back-angle evaporation spectra of alpha, lithium, beryllium, boron and carbon from different compound nuclei near A=100 (EX=76-210 MeV) have been compared with the predictions of standard statistical model codes such as 'CASCADE' and 'GEMINI'. It was found that the shapes of the alpha spectra agree well with the predictions of the statistical models. However the spectra of lithium, beryllium, boron and carbon show significantly gentler slopes implying higher temperature of the residual nuclei, even though the spectra satisfy all other empirical criteria of statistical emissions. The observed slope anomaly was found to be largest for lithium and decreases at higher excitation energy. These results could not be understood by adjusting the parameters of the statistical models or from reaction dynamics and might require examining the statistical model from a quantum mechanical perspective., Comment: 28 pages, 28 Figures, 1 Table; A shorter version has already been published in Physical Review C on June 10, 2013

The systematic study of the correlation between the experimental giant dipole resonance (GDR) width and the average deformation <\beta> of the nucleus at finite excitation is presented for the mass region A ~ 59 to 208. We show that the width of the GDR (\Gamma) and the quadrupole deformation of the nucleus do not follow a linear relation, as predicted earlier, due to the GDR induced quadrupole moment and the correlation also depends on the mass of the nuclei. The different empirical values of <\beta> extracted from the experimental GDR width match exceptionally well with the thermal shape fluctuation model. As a result, this universal correlation between <\beta> and \Gamma provides a direct experimental probe to determine the nuclear deformation at finite temperature and angular momentum in the entire mass region., Comment: 5 pages, 3 Figures, Published in Phys. Inclusive energy spectra of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 5) emitted in the reactions $^{12}$C (77 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si, $^{11}$B (64 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si and $^{12}$C (73 MeV)+ $^{27}$Al (all having the same excitation energy of $ \sim$ 67 MeV), have been measured in the angular range of 10$^\circ$ $\lesssim \theta_{lab} \lesssim$ 60$^\circ$. The fully energy damped (fusion-fission) and the partially energy damped (deep inelastic) components of the fragment energy spectra have been extracted. It has been found that the yields of the fully energy damped fragments for all the above reactions are in conformity with the respective statistical model predictions. The time scales of various deep inelastic fragment emissions have been extracted from the angular distribution data. The angular momentum dissipation in deep inelastic collisions has been estimated from the data and it has been found to be close to the corresponding sticking limit value., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We present the first experimental giant dipole resonance (GDR) width systematics, in the temperature region 0.8 $\sim$ 1.2 MeV for $^{201}$Tl, a near Pb nucleus, to investigate the evolution of the GDR width in shell effect & pairing dominated region. The extracted GDR widths are well below the predictions of shell effect corrected thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) and thermal pairing included phonon damping model. A similar behavior of the GDR width is also observed for $^{63}$Cu measured in the present work and $^{119}$Sb, measured earlier. This discrepancy is attributed to the GDR induced quadrupole moment leading to a critical point in the increase of the GDR width with temperature. We incorporate this novel idea in the phenomenological description based on the TSFM for a better understanding of the GDR width systematics for the entire range of mass, spin and temperature., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The high spin states in $^{195}$Bi has been studied by $\gamma$-ray spectroscopic method using the $^{181}$Ta($^{20}$Ne, 6n) fusion evaporation reaction at 130 MeV. The $\gamma\gamma$ coincidence data were taken using an array of 8 clover HPGe detectors. The spin and parity assignments of the excited states have been made from the measured directional correlation from oriented states (DCO) ratios and integrated polarization asymmetry (IPDCO) ratios. The results show, for the first time, the evidence of a rotational like band based on a 13/2$^+$ band head in this nucleus, indicating the onset of deformation at neutron number $N = 112$ for the Bismuth isotopes. The results obtained were found to be consistent with the prediction of the total Routhian surface calculations using Woods Saxon potential. The same calculations also predict a change in shape from oblate to triaxial in $^{195}$Bi at high rotational frequency.

The systematic evolution of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) width in the temperature region of 0.9 ~ 1.4 MeV has been measured experimentally for 119Sb using alpha induced fusion reaction and employing the LAMBDA high energy photon spectrometer. The temperatures have been precisely determined by simultaneously extracting the vital level density parameter from the neutron evaporation spectrum and the angular momentum from gamma multiplicity filter using a realistic approach. The systematic trend of the data seems to disagree with the thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM). The model predicts the gradual increase of GDR width from its ground state value for T > 0 MeV whereas the measured GDR widths appear to remain constant at the ground state value till T ~ 1 MeV and increase thereafter indicating towards a failure of the adiabatic assumption of the model at low temperature., Comment: Submitted to Physics Letters B (6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table)

The 1p transfer channel in the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction has been studied at E$_{lab}$ = 73, 81 and 85 MeV. The finite range distorted wave Born approximation calculations have been performed using phenomenological optical model potential to analyze the angular distributions for 3 transitions populating the 0.0, 1.78 and 4.62 MeV states of $^{28}$Si and 2 transitions populating the 2.12 and 4.44 MeV states of $^{11}$B via the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction. The spectroscopic strengths as well as spectroscopic factors have been extracted for all the five states. A rather new approach employing Monte Carlo GEANT simulation for converting the experimentally measured fold distribution to angular momentum distribution has been described. The technique has been successfully utilized to measure the angular momentum of the compound nucleus formed in the reaction 4He + 115In --> 119Sb at E_Lab = 35 MeV. A 50 element gamma multiplicity filter, fabricated in-house, was used to measure experimentally the required fold distribution. The influence of alpha clustering on nuclear reaction dynamics is investigated using the giant dipole resonance (GDR) lineshape studies in the reactions 20Ne (Elab=145,160 MeV) + 12C and 20Ne (Elab=160 MeV) + 27Al, populating 32S and 47V, respectively. The GDR lineshapes from the two systems are remarkably different from each other. Whereas, the non alpha-like 47V undergoes Jacobi shape transition and matches exceptionally well with the theoretical GDR lineshape estimated under the framework rotating liquid drop model (RLDM) and thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) signifying shape equilibration, for alpha cluster 32S an extended prolate kind of shape is observed. This unusual deformation, seen directly via -decay for the first time, is predicted to be due to the formation of orbiting di-nuclear configuration or molecular structure of 16O+ 16O in 32S superdeformed band., Comment: 12 Pages, 5 Figures, Accepted for publication as Rapid Communication in Phys. A 50 element BaF2 gamma-multiplicity filter has been designed, fabricated and installed successfully at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata for angular momentum selection in heavy ion collision reactions. A thorough GEANT3 Monte Carlo simulation was performed to optimize the individual detector shape and geometrical structure of the array. The detectors have been fabricated in-house from bare barium fluoride crystals (each measuring 5 cm in length and having cross-sectional area of 3.5 x 3.5 cm2). The basic detector properties have been studied using the lab standard -ray sources. The response function of the filter has been studied using GEANT3 for mapping the fold distribution of the filter onto the angular momentum space. The multiplicity filter has been used successfully to measure the high angular momentum of the compound nuclei populated in the reaction 20Ne (E = 145 & 160 MeV) + 93Nb, 27Al as well as low angular momentum events from the fission fragments of 252Cf spontaneous fission source. The filter has also been used successfully for correcting non-statistical events involved in the heavy ion fusion reaction., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, submitted to NIMA

The energy spectrum of the high energy gamma-rays in coincidence with the prompt gamma rays has been measured for the spontaneous fission of 252Cf. The nucleus-nucleus coherent bremsstrahlung of the accelerating fission fragments is observed and the result has been substantiated with a theoretical calculation based on the coulomb acceleration model. The width of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) decay from the excited fission fragments has been extracted for the first time and compared with the thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) in the liquid drop formalism. The systematics of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) widths in hot and rotating nuclei are studied in terms of temperature T, angular momentum J and mass A. The different experimental data in the temperature range of 1 - 2 MeV have been compared with the thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) in the liquid drop formalism using a modified approach to estimate the average values of T, J and A in the decay of the compound nucleus. The values of the ground state GDR widths have been extracted from the TSFM parametrization in the liquid drop limit for the corrected T, J and A for a given system and compared with the corresponding available systematics of the experimentally measured ground state GDR widths for a range of nuclei from A = 45 to 194. Amazingly, the nature of the theoretically extracted ground state GDR widths matches remarkably well, though 1.5 times smaller, with the experimentally measured ground state GDR widths consistently over a wide range of nuclei., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Inclusive energy distributions for light charged particles ($p, d, t$ and $\alpha$) have been measured in the $^{20}$Ne (158, 170, 180, 200 MeV) + $^{12}$C reactions in the angular range 10$^{o}$ -- 50$^{o}$. Exclusive light charged particle energy distribution measurements were also done for the same system at 158 MeV bombarding energy by in-plane light charged particle -- fragment coincidence. Pre-equilibrium components have been separated out from proton energy spectra using moving source model considering two sources. The data have been compared with the predictions of the statistical model code CASCADE. It has been observed that significant deformation effects were needed to be introduced in the compound nucleus in order to explain the shape of the evaporated $d, t$ energy spectra. For protons, evaporated energy spectra were rather insensitive to nuclear deformation, though angular distributions could not be explained without deformation. Decay sequence of the hot $^{32}$S nucleus has been investigated through exclusive light charged particle measurements using the $^{20}$Ne (158 MeV) + $^{12}$C reaction. Information on the sequential decay chain has been extracted through comparison of the experimental data with the predictions of the statistical model. It is observed from the present analysis that exclusive light charged particle data may be used as a powerful tool to probe the decay sequence of hot light compound systems., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures

High energy gamma-rays in coincidence with low energy yrast gamma-rays have been measured from 113Sb, at excitation energies of 109 and 122 MeV, formed by bombarding 20Ne on 93Nb at projectile energies of 145 and 160 MeV respectively to study the role of angular momentum (J) and temperature (T) over Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) width. The maximum populated angular momenta for fusion were 67hbar and 73hbar respectively for the above-mentioned beam energies. The high energy photons were detected using a Large Area Modular BaF2 Detector Array (LAMBDA) along with a 24-element multiplicity filter. After pre-equilibrium corrections, the excitation energy E* was averaged over the decay steps of the compound nucleus (CN). The average values of temperature, angular momentum, CN mass etc. have been calculated by the statistical model code CASCADE. Using those average values, results show the systematic increase of GDR width with T which is consistent with Kusnezov parametrization and the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. The rise of GDR width with temperature also supports the assumptions of adiabatic coupling in the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. But the GDR widths and corresponding reduced plots with J are not consistent with the theoretical model at high spins., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to Physics Review C

A large BaF2 detector array along with its dedicated CAMAC electronics and VME based data acquisition system has been designed, constructed and installed successfully at VECC, Kolkata for studying high energy gamma rays (E>8 MeV). The array consists of 162 detector elements. The detectors were fabricated from bare barium fluoride crystals (each measuring 35 cm in length and having cross-sectional area of 3.5 cm X 3.5 cm X 35.0 cm). The basic properties of the detectors (energy resolution, time resolution, efficiency, uniformity, fast to slow ratio etc.) were studied exhaustively. Complete GEANT3 monte carlo simulations were performed to optimize the detector design and also to generate the response function. The detector system has been used successfully to measure high energy photons from 113Sb, formed by bombarding 145 and 160 MeV 20Ne beams on a 93Nb target. The measured experimental spectra are in good agreement with those from a modified version of the statistical model code CASCADE. The inclusive energy distributions of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 7) emitted from the bombardment of ^{12}C by ^{20}Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range 10$^{o} \leq \theta_{lab} \leq$ 50^{o}. Damped fragment yields in all the cases have been found to be the characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites. The binary fragment yields are compared with the standard statistical model predictions. Enhanced yields of entrance channel fragments (5 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 7) indicate the survival of orbiting-like process in ^{20}Ne + ^{12}C system at these energies., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

The inclusive energy distributions of complex fragments (3 $\leq$Z $\leq$ 9) emitted in the reactions $^{20}$Ne (145, 158, 200, 218 MeV) + $^{27}$Al have been measured in the angular range 10$^{o}$ - 50$^{o}$. The fusion-fission and the deep-inelastic components of the fragment yield have been extracted using multiple Gaussian functions from the experimental fragment energy spectra. The elemental yields of the fusion-fission component have been found to be fairly well exlained in the framework of standard statistical model. It is found that there is strong competition between the fusion-fission and the deep-inelastic processes at these energies. The time scale of the deep-inelastic process was estimated to be typically in the range of $\sim$ 10$^{-21}$ - 10$^{-22}$ sec., and it was found to decrease with increasing fragment mass. The angular momentum dissipations in fully energy damped deep-inelastic process have been estimated from the average energies of the deep-inelastic components of the fragment energy spectra. It has been found that, the estimated angular momentum dissipations, for lighter fragments in particular, are more than those predicted by the empirical sticking limit., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The inclusive energy distributions of fragments with Z $\geq$ 3 emitted from the bombardment of $^{12}$C by $^{20}$Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range $\theta_{lab} \sim$ 10$^\circ$ - 50$^\circ$. Damped fragment yields in all cases have been found to be characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites; for B, C fragments, average Q-values, $$, were independent of the centre of mass emission angle ($\theta_{c.m}$), and the angular distributions followed $\sim$1/sin$\theta_{c.m}$ like variation, signifying long life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. The inclusive energy distributions of fragments (4$\leq$Z$\leq$7) emitted in the reactions $^{16}$O (116 MeV) + $^{27}$Al, $^{28}$Si, $^{20}$Ne (145 MeV) + $^{27}$Al, $^{59}$Co have been measured in the angular range $\theta_{lab} $= 10$^\circ$ - 65$^\circ$. Fusion-fission and deep inelastic components of the fragment emission have been extracted from the experimental data. The angular mometum dissipations in fully damped deep inelastic collisions have been estimated assming exit channel configuration similar to those for fusion-fission process. It has been found that, the angular momentum dissipations are more than those predicted by the empirical sticking limit in all cases. The deviation is found to increase with increasing charge transfer (lighter fragments). Qualitatively, this may be due to stronger friction in the exit channel. Moreover, for the heavier system $^{20}$Ne + $^{59}$Co, the overall magnitude of deviation is less as compared to those for the lighter systems, {\it i.e.}, $^{16}$O + $^{27}$Al, $^{28}$Si, $^{20}$Ne + $^{27}$Al. This may be due to lesser overlap in time scales of fusion and deep inelastic time scales for heavier systems., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. C

The inclusive energy distributions of fragments (3$\leq$Z$\leq$7) emitted in the reaction $^{16}$O + $^{27}$Al at $E_{lab} = $116 MeV have been measured in the angular range $\theta_{lab} $= 15$^\circ$ - 115$^\circ$. A non-linear optimisation procedure using multiple Gaussian distribution functions has been proposed to extract the fusion-fission and deep inelastic components of the fragment emission from the experimental data. The angular distributions of the fragments, thus obtained, from the deep inelastic component are found to fall off faster than those from the fusion-fission component, indicating shorter life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. The life times of the intermediate di-nuclear configurations have been estimated using a diffractive Regge-pole model. The life times thus extracted ($\sim 1 - 5\times 10^{-22}$ Sec.) are found to decrease with the increase in the fragment charge. Optimum Q-values are also found to increase with increasing charge transfer i.e. with the decrease in fragment charge., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Coherent stochastic resonance is explained in terms of first passage time density functions. Scaling relation between first passage time density functions at resonance for different lengths of the medium is obtained. A formula for first passage time density function at resonance is derived in terms of two universal functions, which demonstrates the universal feature of coherent stochastic resonance. A simple approximate expression for first passage time density function at resonance is proposed which is shown to explain the behavior at resonance fairly accurately., Comment: one .tex and eight .ps files

We analyse the effect of synchronization between noise and periodic signal in a two-state spatially extended system analytically. Resonance features are demonstrated. To have the maximum cooperation between signal and noise, it is shown that noise strength at resonance should increase linearly with the frequency of the signal.
