1. Influence of Process Parameters on the Production of Metabolites in Solid-State Fermentation

Abstract

Solid-state fermentation (SSF) involves the growth of microorganisms on moist solid substrates in the absence of free water. This low moisture content makes the SSF different from submerged fermentation. Unlike the situation in submerged fermentation there is no systematic study guiding the design and operation of large scale SSF with propercontrols. The understanding and modeling of microbial growth kinetics and transport phenomena play important roles in the SSF. The design of bioreactors from tray type to stirred tank is discussed. The packed bed, rotating drum, rocking drum, fluidized bed and stirred tank reactors are used in SSF with and without modifications. The parameters like pH, temperature, agitation and aeration also need to be controlled. There is a large gradient of temperature throughout thetrays. By manipulating the nitrogen source requirement, the pH of the system is generally controlled. The different factors that control the agitation and aeration in the SSF are discussed. Finally the advantages and disadvantages of SSF compared to submerged fermentation were mentioned. Moreover, such understanding is very much required in the design, scale up and process control in SSF. This paper deals with the influence of environmental parameters such as airflow rate, temperature, pH, substrate concentration and other physico-chemical parameters on the production of specific metabolites.

4. Stable Generalized Finite Element Method (SGFEM)

Abstract

The Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM) is a Partition of Unity Method (PUM), where the trial space of standard Finite Element Method (FEM) is augmented with non-polynomial shape functions with compact support. These shape functions, which are also known as the enrichments, mimic the local behavior of the unknown solution of the underlying variational problem. GFEM has been successfully used to solve a variety of problems with complicated features and microstructure. However, the stiffness matrix of GFEM is badly conditioned (much worse compared to the standard FEM) and there could be a severe loss of accuracy in the computed solution of the associated linear system. In this paper, we address this issue and propose a modification of the GFEM, referred to as the Stable GFEM (SGFEM). We show that the conditioning of the stiffness matrix of SGFEM is not worse than that of the standard FEM. Moreover, SGFEM is very robust with respect to the parameters of the enrichments. Abstract

The nuclear effectors of the EGFR and Notch signaling pathways with transcription factor Lozenge, directly regulate D-Pax2 transcription in cone cells of the Drosophila eye disc. Specificity of D-Pax2 expression can be changed upon genetic manipulation of the inputs. Relatively small numbers of temporally/spatially controlled signals received by a set of pluripotent cells can set up the unique combinations of activated transcription factors needed to regulate target genes and specify distinct cell fates in the group, finally. Likely similar mechanisms specify pattern formation in vertebrate developmental systems that involve cell-cell communication.
