Previous investigations along Curiosity's traverse in Gale crater have explored the relationship between orbital and in situ observations. This work aims to better understand the geologic environment of units only observable from orbit and compare them to the properties of units examined by Curiosity. Here, we map an erosion‐resistant dark‐toned mantling unit that overlies the modern topography of Aeolis Mons (informally known as Mt. Sharp) and compare this unit to two other previously mapped dark‐toned resistant units, the marker band and the mound skirting unit (MSU), that have been inferred to represent different geologic environments (lacustrine and aeolian, respectively). Visible to short wave infrared spectra from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars and visual images from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and Context Cameras aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter are used for this comparison. Spectral data suggest a mafic composition with minor alteration, although the composition varies more with location around Mt. Sharp rather than between units. Morphologically, the mantling unit has strong similarities to the marker band based on their consistent low‐albedo, erosion‐resistance, and smooth appearance, contrasting with the highly variable surface texture of the MSU. We hypothesize that all three units had a similar sediment source but experienced aqueous alteration at different times: early ubiquitous cementation in a surface aqueous environment in the mantling unit and marker band versus patchy late diagenesis in the MSU. If true, these results suggest that water activity continued within the Gale crater long after the erosion of Mt. Sharp. Plain Language Summary: Mars Curiosity rover observations of the physical and chemical properties of rocks are used to characterize past geologic environments in Gale crater. Here, we aim to constrain the properties of geologic units inferred to have formed from past lake and sand dune environments using satellite data sets to see if these same environments can be identified elsewhere on Mars. A newly mapped mantling unit is compared, which overlies (or mantles) rocks in Gale crater, representing deposition later in time. We use compositional data from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars and images from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment and Context Cameras all aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to identify the properties of units in this study. We find that although the mantling unit has a similar composition to both the inferred lake (marker band unit) and sand dune (mound skirting unit) environments, its physical appearance is more similar to the marker band lake environment. This suggests that the mantling unit may represent a water environment and has important implications for understanding the timing of when water was present on Mars. Key Points: A newly mapped mantling unit has surface and spectral features similar to the marker band, both of which differ from the surrounding strataThe mantling unit may represent a similar depositional and/or alteration environment as the marker band but much later in geologic timeThe marker band, mantling unit, and mound skirting unit may have similar sediment sources but different water interactions after deposition [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Space Sciences (General) - Abstract
The Greenheugh pediment at the base of Aeolis Mons (Mt. Sharp), which may truncate units in the Murray formation and is capped by a thin sandstone unit, appears to represent a major shift in climate history within Gale crater. The pediment appears to be an erosional remnant of potentially a much more extensive feature. Curiosity’s traverse through the southern extent of Glen Torridon (south of Vera Rubin ridge) has brought the rover in contact with several new stratigraphic units that lie beneath the pediment. These strata were visited at two outcrop-forming buttes (Central and Western butte- both remnants of the retreating pediment) south of an orbitally defined boundary marking the transition from the Fractured Clay-bearing Unit (fCU) and the fractured Intermediate Unit (fIU). Here we present preliminary interpretations of the stratigraphy within Central and Western buttes and propose the Western butte cap rocks do not match the pediment capping unit.

This study uses data from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover to document the facies of the Sutton Island member of the Murray formation, interpret paleoenvironments, and establish key stratigraphic transitions at Gale crater. Two facies associations were identified: Facies Association 1 (FA1) and Facies Association 2 (FA2). Individual facies in FA1 include planar‐laminated mudstone with minor intervals of planar sandstone, ripple cross‐laminated sandstone, cross‐stratified sandstone, and alternating laminated sandstone and mudstone. Meter‐thick packages of planar‐laminated mudstone in FA1 are interpreted to represent deposition in low‐energy ponded environments along the lake margin. Straight‐ and curve‐crested ripple cross‐laminated facies are interpreted to represent current‐influenced deposition. Cross‐stratified sandstone facies consist of dm‐thick sets that represent deposition in distal channels. Intercalated mm‐scale mudstone and sandstone laminae represent waning flow conditions and possible channel abandonment. Facies in FA1 collectively represent deposition in a distal delta plain. FA2 is comprised of planar‐laminated mudstone with minor sandstone and is interpreted to represent deposition in a lacustrine‐basin setting by suspension settling linked to density flows. FA1 transitions upward into FA2, defining a rapid transgression substantial enough to facilitate the deposition of distal lake facies above delta plain facies. The abrupt transition from FA2 back to FA1 deltaic deposits is suggestive of forced regression. Facies in FA1 and FA2 are consistent with the prevalence of aqueous environments recorded in other Murray formation members and extend our understanding of the dynamic sedimentary processes that characterized ancient lacustrine systems at Gale crater. Plain Language Summary: This study classifies sedimentary rock characteristics within an interval of sedimentary rock layers comprising the Sutton Island member, which is part of the Murray formation. The main goals of this study are to determine the ancient environments represented by the different sedimentary rock groups (facies) and to understand how ancient environments changed through time. Facies are grouped into two categories (associations) based on their distribution within the stratigraphy: Facies Association 1 (FA1) and Facies Association 2 (FA2). FA1 contains rocks with a range of sedimentary structures and grain sizes and formed via aqueous processes. The environment represented by FA1 is a delta plain adjacent to a lake. Facies Association 2 consists of one fine‐grained facies that represents deposition in a lake basin environment. The lowermost interval of stratigraphy is comprised of FA1 (delta plain), which transitions upward into the middle interval of stratigraphy comprised FA2 (lake) and subsequently returns to FA1 in the uppermost stratigraphic interval. Transitions between facies associations represent shifts in the ancient lake shoreline that may have been caused by lake‐level change. The delta plain and lake environments represented by FA1 and FA2 are consistent with facies in other members of the Murray formation. Key Points: The Sutton Island member consists of two distinct facies associations that record delta plain and lacustrine environmentsThe depositional history is indicative of a rapid transgression followed by forced regressionFacies record diverse aqueous processes and expand the range of environments interpreted in the Murray formation [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Space Sciences (General) - Abstract
The NASA Curiosity rover has encountered both ancient and modern dune deposits within Gale crater. The modern dunes are actively migrating across the surface within the Bagnold Dune field of which Curiosity conducted analysis campaigns at two different localities. Variations in mafic-felsic mineral abundances between these two sites have been related to the aeolian mineral sorting regime for basaltic environments identified on the Earth which become preferentially enriched in olivine relative to plagioclase feldspar with increasing distance from the source. This aeolian mineral sorting regime for basaltic minerals has also been inferred for Mars from orbital data. The aim of this study is to investigate whether this aeolian mafic-felsic mineral sorting trend has left a geochemical signature in the ancient dune deposits preserved within the Stimson formation. The Stimson formation unconformably overlies the Murray formation and consists of thickly laminated, cross-bedded sandstone. Stimson outcrops have a variable thickness up to 5 meters covering a total area of 17 square kilometers. A dry, aeolian origin was determined for this sandstone due to the high sphericity and roundness of the grains, uniform bimodal grain size distribution (250-710 microns), and 1-meter-thick cross-beds. Identifying the geochemical signature of mineral sorting can provide insights about the paleo-net sediment transport direction of the dunes and prevailing wind direction at the time of deposition.

International audience; Lithostratigraphic correlation representsa fundamental tool for interpreting the depositionalhistory and stratal architecture in sedimentaryrock successions. On Earth, this is accomplished bymeasuring the thickness and lithologies through a stratigraphicunit at multiple places along and across strike, then linking similar rock types. Across kilometer-scaledistances, such correlations have the potential to notonly connect lithologies, but also identify units thatwere deposited at or near the same time as a single bodyof sediment. Prior to the exploration of Gale crater byCuriosity, this type of correlation had not been possibleon Mars because of the requirement for making groundbasedobservations of the same unit in multiple locations. This paper reports on stratigraphic correlation ofthe Jura and Knockfarril Hill members of the Murrayformation across the Vera Rubin ridge (VRR) and GlenTorridon (GT) areas, which are separated by topographic, mineralogic, and spectral boundaries.

- Abstract
For ~500 Martian solar days (sols), the Mars Science Laboratory team explored Vera Rubin ridge (VRR), a topographic feature on the northwest slope of Aeolis Mons. Here we review the sedimentary facies and stratigraphy observed during sols 1,800–2,300, covering more than 100 m of stratigraphic thickness. Curiosity's traverse includes two transects across the ridge, which enables investigation of lateral variability over a distance of ~300 m. Three informally named stratigraphic members of the Murray formation are described: Blunts Point, Pettegrove Point, and Jura, with the latter two exposed on VRR. The Blunts Point member, exposed just below the ridge, is characterized by a recessive, fine‐grained facies that exhibits extensive planar lamination and is crosscut by abundant curvi‐planar veins. The Pettegrove Point member is more resistant, fine‐grained, thinly planar laminated, and contains a higher abundance of diagenetic concretions. Conformable above the Pettegrove Point member is the Jura member, which is also fine‐grained and parallel stratified, but is marked by a distinct step in topography, which coincides with localized meter‐scale inclined strata, a thinly and thickly laminated facies, and occasional crystal molds. All members record low‐energy lacustrine deposition, consistent with prior observations of the Murray formation. Uncommon outcrops of low‐angle stratification suggest possible subaqueous currents, and steeply inclined beds may be the result of slumping. Collectively, the rocks exposed at VRR provide additional evidence for a long‐lived lacustrine environment (in excess of 106 years via comparison to terrestrial records of sedimentation), which extends our understanding of the duration of habitable conditions in Gale crater.

- Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the Curiosity rover's exploration at Vera Rubin ridge (VRR) and summarizes the science results. VRR is a distinct geomorphic feature on lower Aeolis Mons (informally known as Mount Sharp) that was identified in orbital data based on its distinct texture, topographic expression, and association with a hematite spectral signature. Curiosity conducted extensive remote sensing observations, acquired data on dozens of contact science targets, and drilled three outcrop samples from the ridge, as well as one outcrop sample immediately below the ridge. Our observations indicate that strata composing VRR were deposited in a predominantly lacustrine setting and are part of the Murray formation. The rocks within the ridge are chemically in family with underlying Murray formation strata. Red hematite is dispersed throughout much of the VRR bedrock, and this is the source of the orbital spectral detection. Gray hematite is also present in isolated, gray-colored patches concentrated toward the upper elevations of VRR, and these gray patches also contain small, dark Fe-rich nodules. We propose that VRR formed when diagenetic event(s) preferentially hardened rocks, which were subsequently eroded into a ridge by wind. Diagenesis also led to enhanced crystallization and/or cementation that deepened the ferric-related spectral absorptions on the ridge, which helped make them readily distinguishable from orbit. Results add to existing evidence of protracted aqueous environments at Gale crater and give new insight into how diagenesis shaped Mars' rock record.

- Abstract
The Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover has encountered both ancient lithified and modern active aeolian dune deposits within Gale crater, providing an opportunity to study how aeolian processes have changed during Gale crater's geological history. This study uses data from the Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) and Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument suites onboard Curiosity to; (1) constrain the diagenetic processes that lithified and altered the ancient aeolian Stimson formation, (2) investigate whether the geochemical signature in the Stimson formation is consistent with the aeolian mafic-felsic mineral sorting trend identified in the modern Bagnold dune fields in Gale crater, and (3) discuss the provenance of the Stimson sediments, comparing it to those identified in the modern dune and ancient river and lake deposits also analyzed along Curiosity's traverse. The ancient Stimson dune deposits that stratigraphically overlie the Gale fluvio-lacustrine units were analyzed in two locations; the Emerson and the Naukluft plateaus. ChemCam data show that the Stimson formation has subtle variations in MgO, Al2O3, Na2O, and K2O between the two localities. An agglomerative cluster analysis of the constrained Stimson dataset reveals five clusters, four of which relate to different proportions of mafic and felsic minerals analyzed by ChemCam. In general, the cluster analysis shows that the Emerson plateau has a greater proportion of mafic minerals and fewer coarse, felsic grains relative to the Naukluft plateau. This variation in mafic and felsic minerals between localities suggests a southwest to northeast net sediment transport direction due to aeolian mineral sorting dynamics preferentially transporting mafic minerals that are easier to saltate than the elongate, often coarser, felsic minerals. This derived transport direction for the Stimson formation supports that determined by sedimentological evidence and is op

Exobiology - Abstract
Vapor-deposited amorphous water ice when warmed above the glass transition temperature (120-140 K), is a viscous liquid which exhibits a viscosity vs temperature relationship different from that of liquid water at room temperature. New studies of thin water ice films now demonstrate that viscous liquid water persists in the temperature range 140-210 K. where it coexists with cubic crystalline ice. The liquid character of amorphous water above the glass transition is demonstrated by (1) changes in the morphology of water ice films on a nonwetting surface observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at around 175 K during slow warming, (2) changes in the binding energy of water molecules measured in temperature programmed desorption (TPD) studies, and (3) changes in the shape of the 3.07 micrometers absorption band observed in grazing angle reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) during annealing at high temperature. whereby the decreased roughness of the water surface is thought to cause changes in the selection rules for the excitation of O-H stretch vibrations. Because it is present over such a wide range of temperatures, we propose that this form of liquid water is a common material in nature. where it is expected to exist in the subsurface layers of comets and on the surfaces of some planets and satellites.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available regarding the use of antithrombotic strategies in coronary artery disease patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) in everyday practice. We sought to describe the prevalence of AF and its antithrombotic management in a contemporary population of patients with stable coronary artery disease.METHODS AND FINDINGS: CLARIFY is an international, prospective, longitudinal registry of outpatients with stable coronary artery disease, defined as prior (≥12 months) myocardial infarction, revascularization procedure, coronary stenosis >50%, or chest pain associated with evidence of myocardial ischemia. Overall, 33,428 patients were screened, of whom 32,954 had data available for analysis at baseline; of these 2,229 (6.7%) had a history of AF. Median (interquartile range) CHA2DS2-VASc score was 4 (3, 5). Oral anticoagulation alone was used in 25.7%, antiplatelet therapy alone in 52.8% (single 41.8%, dual 11.0%), and both in 21.5%. OAC use was independently associated with permanent AF (pCONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease and AF, most of whom are theoretical candidates for anticoagulation, oral anticoagulants were used in only 47.2%. Half of the patients received antiplatelet therapy alone and one-fifth received both antiplatelets and oral anticoagulants. Efforts are needed to improve adherence to guidelines in these patients.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN registry of clinical trials: ISRCTN43070564.
