Search

Diffuse ionized gas pervades the disk of the Milky Way. We detect extremely faint emission from this Galactic Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) using the Green Bank Telescope to make radio recombination line (RRL) observations toward two Milky Way sight lines: G20, $(\ell,{\it b}) = (20^\circ, 0^\circ)$, and G45, $(\ell,{\it b}) = (45^\circ, 0^\circ)$. We stack 18 consecutive Hn$\alpha$ transitions between 4.3-7.1 GHz to derive ${\rm \langle Hn\alpha \rangle}$ spectra that are sensitive to RRL emission from plasmas with emission measures EM >10 ${\rm \,cm^{-6}\,pc}$. Each sight line has two Gaussian shaped spectral components with emission measures that range between $\sim$100 and $\sim$300 ${\rm \,cm^{-6}\,pc}$. Because there is no detectable RRL emission at negative LSR velocities the emitting plasma must be located interior to the Solar orbit. The G20 and G45 emission measures imply RMS densities of 0.15 and 0.18$\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$, respectively, if these sight lines are filled with homogeneous plasma. The observed ${\rm \langle Hn\beta \rangle}$/${\rm \langle Hn\alpha\rangle}$ line ratios are consistent with LTE excitation for the strongest components. The high velocity component of G20 has a narrow line width, 13.5 km s$^{-1}$, that sets an upper limit of <4,000 K for the plasma electron temperature. The ideal spectral averaging method depends on one's science goals and the available information about one's data. Including low-quality data in the average can decrease the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which may necessitate an optimization method or a consideration of different weighting schemes. Here, we explore a variety of spectral averaging methods. We investigate the use of three weighting schemes during averaging: weighting by the signal divided by the variance ("intensity-noise weighting"), weighting by the inverse of the variance ("noise weighting"), and uniform weighting. Whereas for intensity-noise weighting the SNR is maximized when all spectra are averaged, for noise and uniform weighting we find that averaging the 35-45% of spectra with the highest SNR results in the highest SNR average spectrum. With this intensity cutoff, the average spectrum with noise or uniform weighting has ~95% of the intensity of the spectrum created from intensity-noise weighting. We apply our spectral averaging methods to GBT Diffuse Ionized Gas (GDIGS) hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) data to determine the ionic abundance ratio, y+, and discuss future applications of the methodology., Comment: Accepted by PASP

The Green Bank Telescope (GBT) Diffuse Ionized Gas Survey (GDIGS) traces ionized gas in the Galactic midplane by observing radio recombination line (RRL) emission from 4-8 GHz. The nominal survey zone is $32.3^{\circ}> {\ell} > -5^{\circ}$, $|b|<0.5^{\circ}$. Here, we analyze GDIGS Hn${\alpha}$ ionized gas emission toward discrete sources. Using GDIGS data, we identify the velocity of 35 H II regions that have multiple detected RRL velocity components. We identify and characterize RRL emission from 88 H II regions that previously lacked measured ionized gas velocities. We also identify and characterize RRL emission from eight locations that appear to be previously-unidentified H II regions and 30 locations of RRL emission that do not appear to be H II regions based on their lack of mid-infrared emission. This latter group may be a compact component of the Galactic Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG). There are an additional 10 discrete sources that have anomalously high RRL velocities for their locations in the Galactic plane. We compare these objects' RRL data to 13CO, H I and mid-infrared data, and find that these sources do not have the expected 24 ${\mu}$m emission characteristic of H II regions. Standard stellar evolution models that only consider convection as a physical process to mix material inside of stars predict the production of significant amounts of 3He in low-mass stars (M < 2 Msun), with peak abundances of 3He/H ~ few x 10-3 by number. Over the life-time of the Galaxy, this ought to produce 3He/H abundances that diminish with increasing Galactocentric radius. Observations of 3He+ in HII regions throughout the Galactic disk, however, reveal very little variation in the 3He abundance with values of 3He/H similar to the primoridal abundance, (3He/H)p ~ 10-5 . This discrepancy, known as the "3He Problem", can be resolved by invoking in stellar evolution models an extra-mixing mechanism due to the thermohaline instability. Here, we observe 3He+ in the planetary nebula J320 (PN G190.3-17.7) with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) to confirm a previous 3He+ detection made with the VLA that supports standard stellar yields. This measurement alone indicates that not all stars undergo extra mixing. Our more sensitive observations do not detect 3He+ emission from J320 with an RMS noise of 58.8 microJy/beam after smoothing the data to a velocity resolution of 11.4 km/s . We estimate an abundance limit of 3He/H <= 2.75 x 10-3 by number using the numerical radiative transfer code NEBULA. This result nullifies the last significant detection of 3He+ in a PN and allows for the possibility that all stars undergo extra mixing processes., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ

We investigate the kinematic properties of Galactic HII regions using radio recombination line (RRL) emission detected by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 4-10 GHz and the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 8-10 GHz. Our HII region sample consists of 425 independent observations of 374 nebulae that are relatively well isolated from other, potentially confusing sources and have a single RRL component with a high signal-to-noise ratio. We perform Gaussian fits to the RRL emission in position-position-velocity data cubes and discover velocity gradients in 178 (42%) of the nebulae with magnitudes between 5 and 200 m/s/arcsec. About 15% of the sources also have a RRL width spatial distribution that peaks toward the center of the nebula. The velocity gradient position angles appear to be random on the sky with no favored orientation with respect to the Galactic Plane. We craft HII region simulations that include bipolar outflows or solid body rotational motions to explain the observed velocity gradients. The simulations favor solid body rotation since, unlike the bipolar outflow kinematic models, they are able to produce both the large, > 40 m/s/arcsec, velocity gradients and also the RRL width structure that we observe in some sources. The bipolar outflow model, however, cannot be ruled out as a possible explanation for the observed velocity gradients for many sources in our sample. We nevertheless suggest that most HII region complexes are rotating and may have inherited angular momentum from their parent molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

The Southern HII Region Discovery Survey (SHRDS) is a 900 hour Australia Telescope Compact Array 4-10 GHz radio continuum and radio recombination line (RRL) survey of Galactic HII regions and infrared-identified HII region candidates in the southern sky. For this data release, we reprocess all previously published SHRDS data and include an additional ~450 hours of observations. The search for new HII regions is now complete over the range 259 deg < Galactic longitude < 346 deg, |Galactic latitude| < 4 deg for HII region candidates with predicted 6 GHz continuum peak brightnesses >30 mJy/beam. We detect radio continuum emission toward 730 targets altogether including previously known nebulae and HII region candidates. By averaging ~18 RRL transitions, we detect RRL emission toward 206 previously known HII regions and 436 HII region candidates. Including the northern sky surveys, over the last decade the HII Region Discovery Surveys have more than doubled the number of known Galactic HII regions. The census of HII regions in the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions is now complete for nebulae with 9 GHz continuum flux densities > 250 mJy. We compare the RRL properties of the newly discovered SHRDS nebulae with those of all previously known HII regions. The median RRL full-width at half-maximum line width of the entire WISE Catalog HII region population is 23.9 km/s and is consistent between Galactic quadrants. The observed Galactic longitude-velocity asymmetry in the population of HII regions probably reflects underlying spiral structure in the Milky Way., Comment: 37 pages, 10 figures, 11 tables (full tables in machine readable format available in the online journal), 1 appendix. The Green Bank Telescope (GBT) Diffuse Ionized Gas Survey (GDIGS) traces ionized gas in the Galactic midplane by measuring $4-8$GHz radio recombination line (RRL) emission. The nominal survey zone is $32.3^{\circ}> l >-5^{\circ}$, $|b|<0.5^{\circ}$, but coverage extends above and below the plane in select fields, and additionally includes the areas around W47 ($l \simeq 37.5^{\circ}$) and W49 ($l \simeq 43^{\circ}$). GDIGS simultaneously observes 22 Hn$\alpha$ (15 usable), 25 Hn$\beta$ (18 usable), and 8 Hn$\gamma$ RRLs (all usable), as well as multiple molecular line transitions (including of H$_2^{13}$CO, H$_2$CO, and CH$_3$OH). Here, we describe the GDIGS survey parameters and characterize the RRL data, focusing primarily on the Hn$\alpha$ data. We produce sensitive data cubes by averaging the usable RRLs, after first smoothing to a common spectral resolution of 0.5km/s and a spatial resolution of 2.65' for Hn$\alpha$, 2.62' for Hn$\beta$, and 2.09' for Hn$\gamma$. The average spectral noise per spaxel in the \hna\ data cubes is $\sim\!10$mK ($\sim\!5$mJy/beam). This sensitivity allows GDIGS to detect RRLs from plasma throughout the inner Galaxy. The GDIGS Hn$\alpha$ data are sensitive to emission measures $EM \gtrsim 1100$cm$^{-6}$pc, which corresponds to a mean electron density $\langle n_e \rangle \gtrsim 30$cm$^{-3}$ for a 1pc path length or $\langle n_e \rangle \gtrsim 1$cm$^{-3}$ for a 1kpc path length., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJS. The Galactic HII region luminosity function (LF) is an important metric for understanding global star formation properties of the Milky Way, but only a few studies have been done and all use relatively small numbers of HII regions. We use a sample of 797 first Galactic quadrant HII regions compiled from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions to examine the form of the LF at multiple infrared and radio wavelengths. Our sample is statistically complete for all regions powered by single stars of type O9.5V and earlier. We fit the LF at each wavelength with single and double power laws. Averaging the results from all wavelengths, the mean of the best-fit single power law index is $\langle\alpha\rangle=-1.75\,\pm\,0.01$. The mean best-fit double power law indices are $\langle\alpha_1\rangle=-1.40\,\pm\,0.03$ and $\langle\alpha_2\rangle=-2.33\,\pm\,0.04$. We conclude that neither a single nor a double power law is strongly favored over the other. The LFs show some variation when we separate the HII region sample into subsets by heliocentric distance, physical size, Galactocentric radius, and location relative to the spiral arms, but blending individual HII regions into larger complexes does not change the value of the power law indices of the best-fit LF models. The consistency of the power law indices across multiple wavelengths suggests that the LF is independent of wavelength. We use the Green Bank Telescope to search for $^3He^+$ emission from a sample of four Galactic planetary nebulae: NGC 3242, NGC 6543, NGC 6826, and NGC 7009. During the era of primordial nucleosynthesis the light elements $^2H$, $^3He$, $^4He$, and $^7Li$ were produced in significant amounts and these abundances have since been modified primarily by stars. Observations of $^3He^+$ in H II regions located throughout the Milky Way disk reveal very little variation in the $^3He/H$ abundance ratio -- the "$^3He$ Plateau" -- indicating that the net effect of $^3He$ production in stars is negligible. This is in contrast to much higher $^3He/H$ abundance ratios reported for some planetary nebulae. This discrepancy is known as the "$^3He$ Problem". We use radio recombination lines observed simultaneously with the $^3He^+$ transition to make a robust assessment of the spectral sensitivity that these observations achieve. We detect spectral lines at $\sim$ 1 -- 2 mK intensities, but at these levels instrumental effects compromise our ability to measure accurate spectral line parameters. We do not confirm reports of previous detections of $^3He^+$ in NGC 3242 nor do we detect $^3He^+$ emission from any of our sources. This result calls into question all reported detections of $^3He^+$ emission from any planetary nebula. The $^3He/H$ abundance upper limit we derive here for NGC 3242 is inconsistent with standard stellar production of $^3He$ and thus requires that some type of extra mixing process operates in low-mass stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Green Bank Telescope (GBT) Diffuse Ionized Gas Survey (GDIGS) is a fully-sampled radio recombination line (RRL) survey of the inner Galaxy at C-band (4-8 GHz). We average together ~15 Hn$\alpha$ RRLs within the receiver bandpass to improve the spectral signal-to-noise ratio. The average beam size for the RRL observations at these frequencies is ~2'. We grid these data to have spatial and velocity spacings of 30" and 0.5 km/s, respectively. Here we discuss the first RRL data from GDIGS: a six square-degree-area surrounding the Galactic HII region complex W43. We attempt to create a map devoid of emission from discrete HII regions and detect RRL emission from the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) across nearly the entire mapped area. We estimate the intensity of the DIG emission by a simple empirical model, taking only the HII region locations, angular sizes, and RRL intensities into account. The DIG emission is predominantly found at two distinct velocities: ~40 km/s and ~100 km/s. While the 100 km/s component is associated with W43 at a distance of ~6 kpc, the origin of the 40 km/s component is less clear. Since the distribution of the 40 km/s emission cannot be adequately explained by ionizing sources at the same velocity, we hypothesize that the plasma at the two velocity components is interacting, placing the 40 km/s DIG at a similar distance as the 100 km/s emission. We find a correlation between dust temperature and integrated RRL intensity, suggesting that the same radiation field that heats the dust also maintains the ionization of the DIG., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. The metallicity structure of the Milky Way disk stems from the chemodynamical evolutionary history of the Galaxy. We use the National Radio Astronomy Observatory Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to observe ~8-10 GHz hydrogen radio recombination line and radio continuum emission toward 82 Galactic HII regions. We use these data to derive the electron temperatures and metallicities for these nebulae. Since collisionally excited lines from metals (e.g., oxygen, nitrogen) are the dominant cooling mechanism in HII regions, the nebular metallicity can be inferred from the electron temperature. Including previous single dish studies, there are now 167 nebulae with radio-determined electron temperature and either parallax or kinematic distance determinations. The interferometric electron temperatures are systematically 10% larger than those found in previous single dish studies, likely due to incorrect data analysis strategies, optical depth effects, and/or the observation of different gas by the interferometer. By combining the interferometer and single dish samples, we find an oxygen abundance gradient across the Milky Way disk with a slope of -0.052 +/- 0.004 dex/kpc. We also find significant azimuthal structure in the metallicity distribution. The slope of the oxygen gradient varies by a factor of ~2 when Galactocentric azimuths near 30 deg are compared with those near 100 deg. The census of Galactic HII regions is vastly incomplete in the Southern sky. We use the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to observe 4-10 GHz radio continuum and hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from candidate HII regions in the Galactic zone 259 deg < l < 344 deg, |b| < 4 deg. In this first data release, we target the brightest HII region candidates and observe 282 fields in the direction of at least one previously-known or candidate HII region. We detect radio continuum emission and RRL emission in 275 (97.5%) and 258 (91.5%) of these fields, respectively. We catalog the ~7 GHz radio continuum peak flux densities and positions of 80 previously-known and 298 candidate HII regions. After averaging ~18 RRL transitions, we detect 77 RRL velocity components towards 76 previously-known HII regions and 267 RRL velocity components towards 256 HII region candidates. The discovery of RRL emission from these nebulae increases the number of known Galactic HII regions in the surveyed zone by 82%, to 568 nebulae. In the fourth quadrant we discover 50 RRLs with positive velocities, placing those sources outside the Solar circle. Including the pilot survey, the SHRDS has now discovered 295 Galactic HII regions. We develop a framework for a new definition of the Galactic midplane, allowing for tilt (rotation about Galactic azimuth 90deg.), and roll (rotation about Galactic azimuth 0deg.) of the midplane with respect to the current definition. Derivation of the tilt and roll angles also determines the solar height above the midplane. Here we use nebulae from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions to define the Galactic high-mass star formation (HMSF) midplane. We analyze various subsamples of the WISE catalog and find that all have Galactic latitude scale heights near 0.30deg. and z-distribution scale heights near 30pc. The vertical distribution for small (presumably young) HII regions is narrower than that of larger (presumably old) HII regions (~25pc versus ~40pc), implying that the larger regions have migrated further from their birth sites. For all HII region subsamples and for a variety of fitting methodologies, we find that the HMSF midplane is not significantly tilted or rolled with respect to the currently-defined midplane, and therefore the Sun is near to the HMSF midplane. These results are consistent with other studies of HMSF, but are inconsistent with many stellar studies, perhaps due to asymmetries in the stellar distribution near the Sun. Our results are sensitive to latitude restrictions, and also to the completeness of the sample, indicating that similar analyses cannot be done accurately with less complete samples. During the era of primordial nucleosynthesis the light elements 2H, 3He, 4He, and 7Li were produced in significant amounts and these abundances have since been modified primarily by stars. Observations of 3He+ in HII regions located throughout the Milky Way disk reveal very little variation in the 3He/H abundance ratio---the "3He Plateau"---indicating that the net effect of 3He production in stars is negligible. This is in contrast to much higher 3He/H abundance ratios found in some planetary nebulae. This discrepancy is known as the "3He Problem". Stellar evolution models that include thermohaline mixing can resolve the 3He Problem by drastically reducing the net 3He production in most stars. These models predict a small negative 3He/H abundance gradient across the Galactic disk. Here we use the Green Bank Telescope to observe 3He+ in five HII regions with high accuracy to confirm the predictions of stellar and Galactic chemical evolution models that include thermohaline mixing. We detect 3He+ in all the sources and derive the 3He+/H+ abundance ratio using model HII regions and the numerical radiative transfer code NEBULA. The over 35 radio recombination lines (RRLs) that are simultaneously observed, together with the 3He+ transition provide stringent constraints for these models. We apply an ionization correction using observations of 4He RRLs. We determine a 3He/H abundance gradient as a function of Galactocentric radius of -0.116 +/- 0.022 x 10-5, consistent with stellar evolution models including thermohaline mixing that predict a small net contribution of 3He from solar mass stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

We report the discovery of hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from two galaxies with star formation rates (SFRs) similar to that of the Milky Way: M51 and NGC628. We use the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to measure $\sim$15 Hn$\alpha$ recombination transitions simultaneously and average these data to improve our spectral signal-to-noise ratio. We show that our data can be used to estimate the total ionizing photon flux of these two sources, and we derive their SFRs within the GBT beam: $\Psi_{\rm OB} = 3.46$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for M51 and $\Psi_{\rm OB} = 0.56$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for NGC628. Here, we demonstrate that it is possible to detect RRLs from normal galaxies that are not undergoing a starburst with current instrumentation and reasonable integration times ($\sim$12 hr for each source). We also show that we can characterize the overall star-forming properties of M51 and NGC628, although the GBT beam cannot resolve individual HII region complexes. Our results suggest that future instruments, such as the Square Kilometre Array and the Next Generation Very Large Array, will be able to detect RRL emission from a multitude of Milky Way-like galaxies, making it possible to determine SFRs of normal galaxies unaffected by extinction and to measure global star formation properties in the local universe., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in PASP

Distances to high mass star forming regions (HMSFRs) in the Milky Way are a crucial constraint on the structure of the Galaxy. Only kinematic distances are available for a majority of the HMSFRs in the Milky Way. Here we compare the kinematic and parallax distances of 75 Galactic HMSFRs to assess the accuracy of kinematic distances. We derive the kinematic distances using three different methods: the traditional method using the Brand & Blitz (1993) rotation curve (Method A), the traditional method using the Reid et al. (2014) rotation curve and updated Solar motion parameters (Method B), and a Monte Carlo technique (Method C). Methods B and C produce kinematic distances closest to the parallax distances, with median differences of 13% (0.43 kpc) and 17% (0.42 kpc), respectively. Except in the vicinity of the tangent point, the kinematic distance uncertainties derived by Method C are smaller than those of Methods A and B. In a large region of the Galaxy, the Method C kinematic distances constrain both the distances and the Galactocentric positions of HMSFRs more accurately than parallax distances. Beyond the tangent point along longitude=30 degrees, for example, the Method C kinematic distance uncertainties reach a minimum of 10% of the parallax distance uncertainty at a distance of 14 kpc. We develop a prescription for deriving and applying the Method C kinematic distances and distance uncertainties. The Outer Scutum-Centaurus arm (OSC) is the most distant molecular spiral arm known in the Milky Way. The OSC may be the very distant end of the well-known Scutum-Centaurus arm, which stretches from the end of the Galactic bar to the outer Galaxy. At this distance the OSC is seen in the first Galactic quadrant. The population of star formation tracers in the OSC remains largely uncharacterized. Extragalactic studies show a strong correlation between molecular gas and star formation, and carbon monoxide (CO) emission was recently discovered in the OSC. Here we use the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) 12-m telescope to observe the $^{12}$CO J = 1-0 and $^{13}$CO J = 1-0 transitions toward 78 HII region candidates chosen from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions. These targets are spatially coincident with the Galactic longitude-latitude ($\ell, b$) OSC locus as defined by HI emission. We detect CO emission in $\sim 80$% of our targets. In total, we detect 117 $^{12}$CO and 40 $^{13}$CO emission lines. About 2/3 of our targets have at least one emission line originating beyond the Solar orbit. Most of the detections beyond the Solar orbit are associated with the Outer Arm, but there are 17 $^{12}$CO emission lines and 8 $^{13}$CO emission lines with LSR velocities that are consistent with the velocities of the OSC. There is no apparent difference between the physical properties (e.g., molecular column density) of these OSC molecular clouds and non--OSC molecular clouds within our sample., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

As part of our ongoing HII Region Discovery Survey (HRDS), we report the Green Bank Telescope detection of 148 new angularly-large Galactic HII regions in radio recombination line (RRL) emission. Our targets are located at a declination greater than -45deg., which corresponds to 266deg. > l > -20deg. at b = 0deg. All sources were selected from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, and have infrared angular diameters >260''. The Galactic distribution of these "large" HII regions is similar to that of the previously-known sample of Galactic HII regions. The large HII region RRL line width and peak line intensity distributions are skewed toward lower values compared with that of previous HRDS surveys. We discover 7 sources with extremely narrow RRLs <10 km/s. If half the line width is due to turbulence, these 7 sources have thermal plasma temperatures <1100 K. These temperatures are lower than any measured for Galactic HII regions, and the narrow line components may arise instead from partially ionized zones in the HII region photo-dissociation regions. We discover G039.515+00.511, one of the most luminous HII regions in the Galaxy. We also detect the RRL emission from three HII regions with diameters >100 pc, making them some of the physically largest known HII regions in the Galaxy. This survey completes the HRDS HII region census in the Northern sky, where we have discovered 887 HII regions and more than doubled the previously-known census of Galactic HII regions., Comment: Accepted in ApJS

We analyze the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in the first Galactic quadrant from l=18deg to 40deg using radio recombination line (RRL) data from the Green Bank Telescope. These data allow us to distinguish DIG emission from HII region emission and thus study the diffuse gas essentially unaffected by confusion from discrete sources. We find that the DIG has two dominant velocity components, one centered around 100km/s associated with the luminous HII region W43, and the other centered around 45km/s not associated with any large HII region. Our analysis suggests that the two velocity components near W43 may be caused by non-circular streaming motions originating near the end of the Galactic bar. At lower Galactic longitudes, the two velocities may instead arise from gas at two distinct distances from the Sun, with the most likely distances being ~6kpc for the 100km/s component and ~12kpc for the 45km/s component. We show that the intensity of diffuse Spitzer GLIMPSE 8.0um emission caused by excitation of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is correlated with both the locations of discrete HII regions and the intensity of the RRL emission from the DIG. This implies that the soft ultra-violet photons responsible for creating the infrared emission have a similar origin as the harder ultra-violet photons required for the RRL emission. The 8.0um emission increases with RRL intensity but flattens out for directions with the most intense RRL emission, suggesting that PAHs are partially destroyed by the energetic radiation field at these locations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (16 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables)

The Southern HII Region Discovery Survey (SHRDS) is a survey of the third and fourth quadrants of the Galactic plane that will detect radio recombination line and continuum emission at cm-wavelengths from several hundred HII region candidates using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The targets for this survey come from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, and were identified based on mid-infrared and radio continuum emission. In this pilot project, two different configurations of the Compact Array Broad Band receiver and spectrometer system were used for short test observations. The pilot surveys detected radio recombination line emission from 36 of 53 HII region candidates, as well as seven known \hii regions that were included for calibration. The Outer Scutum-Centaurus (OSC) spiral arm is the most distant molecular spiral arm in the Milky Way, but until recently little was known about this structure. Discovered by Dame and Thaddeus (2011), the OSC lies $\sim$15 kpc from the Galactic Center. Due to the Galactic warp, it rises to nearly 4$^{\circ}$ above the Galactic Plane in the first Galactic quadrant, leaving it unsampled by most Galactic plane surveys. Here we observe HII region candidates spatially coincident with the OSC using the Very Large Array to image radio continuum emission from 65 targets and the Green Bank Telescope to search for ammonia and water maser emission from 75 targets. This sample, drawn from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions, represents every HII region candidate near the longitude-latitude (l,v) locus of the OSC. Coupled with their characteristic mid-infrared morphologies, detection of radio continuum emission strongly suggests that a target is a bona fide HII region. Detections of associated ammonia or water maser emission allow us to derive a kinematic distance and determine if the velocity of the region is consistent with that of the OSC. Nearly 60% of the observed sources were detected in radio continuum, and over 20% have ammonia or water maser detections. The velocities of these sources mainly place them beyond the Solar orbit. These very distant high-mass stars have stellar spectral types as early as O4. Using data from the Green Bank Telescope, we analyze the radio continuum (free-free) and radio recombination line (RRL) emission of the compact HII region NGC 7538 (Sharpless 158). We detect extended radio continuum and hydrogen RRL emission beyond the photodissociation region (PDR) toward the north and east, but a sharp decrease in emission toward the south and west. This indicates that a non-uniform PDR morphology is affecting the amount of radiation "leaking" through the PDR. The strongest carbon RRL emission is found in the western PDR that appears to be dense. We compute a leaking fraction $f_R = 15 \pm 5$ % of the radio continuum emission measured in the plane of the sky which represents a lower limit when accounting for the three-dimensional geometry of the region. We detect an average $^4\textrm{He}^+/\textrm{H}^+$ abundance ratio by number of $0.088 \pm 0.003$ inside the HII region and a decrease in this ratio with increasing distance from the region beyond the PDR. Using Herschel Space Observatory data, we show that small dust temperature enhancements to the north and east of NGC 7538 coincide with extended radio emission, but that the dust temperature enhancements are mostly contained within a second PDR to the east. Unlike the giant HII region W43, the radiation leaking from NGC 7538 seems to only affect the local ambient medium. We measure carbon radio recombination line (RRL) emission at 5.3 GHz toward four HII regions with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to determine the magnetic field strength in the photodissociation region (PDR) that surrounds the ionized gas. Roshi (2007) suggests that the non-thermal line widths of carbon RRLs from PDRs are predominantly due to magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) waves, thus allowing the magnetic field strength to be derived. We model the PDR with a simple geometry and perform the non-LTE radiative transfer of the carbon RRL emission to solve for the PDR physical properties. Using the PDR mass density from these models and the carbon RRL non-thermal line width we estimate total magnetic field strengths of B ~ 100-300 micro Gauss in W3 and NGC6334A. Our results for W49 and NGC6334D are less well constrained with total magnetic field strengths between B ~ 200-1000 micro Gauss. HI and OH Zeeman measurements of the line-of-sight magnetic field strength (B_los), taken from the literature, are between a factor of ~0.5-1 of the lower bound of our carbon RRL magnetic field strength estimates. The WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions contains $\sim2000$ HII region candidates lacking ionized gas spectroscopic observations. All candidates have the characteristic HII region mid-infrared morphology of WISE $12\,\,\mu\,m$ emission surrounding $22\,\mu\,m$ emission, and additionally have detected radio continuum emission. We here report Green Bank Telescope (GBT) hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) and radio continuum detections at X-band (9GHz; 3cm) of 302 WISE HII region candidates (out of 324 targets observed) in the zone $225^{\circ} > l > -20^{\circ}$, $|b| \le 6^{\circ}$. Here we extend the sky coverage of our HII region Discovery Survey (HRDS), which now contains nearly 800 HII regions distributed across the entire northern sky. We provide LSR velocities for the 302 detections and kinematic distances for 131 of these. Of the 302 new detections, five have ($l, b, v$) coordinates consistent with the Outer Scutum-Centaurus Arm (OSC), the most distant molecular spiral arm of the Milky Way. Due to the Galactic warp, these nebulae are found at Galactic latitudes $>1^{\circ}$ in the first Galactic quadrant, and therefore were missed in previous surveys of the Galactic plane. One additional region has a longitude and velocity consistent with the OSC but lies at a negative Galactic latitude (G039.183$-$01.422; $-$54.9 kms). With Heliocentric distances >22 kpc and Galactocentric distances >16 kpc, the OSC HII regions are the most distant known in the Galaxy. We detect an additional three HII regions near $l \simeq 150^{\circ}$ whose LSR velocities place them at Galactocentric radii >19 kpc. HII regions are the ionized spheres surrounding high-mass stars. They are ideal targets for tracing Galactic structure because they are predominantly found in spiral arms and have high luminosities at infrared and radio wavelengths. In the Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey (GBT HRDS) we found that >30% of first Galactic quadrant HII regions have multiple hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) velocities, which makes determining their Galactic locations and physical properties impossible. Here we make additional GBT RRL observations to determine the discrete HII region velocity for all 117 multiple-velocity sources within 18deg. < l < 65deg. The multiple-velocity sources are concentrated in the zone 22deg. < l < 32deg., coinciding with the largest regions of massive star formation, which implies that the diffuse emission is caused by leaked ionizing photons. We combine our observations with analyses of the electron temperature, molecular gas, and carbon recombination lines to determine the source velocities for 103 discrete H II regions (88% of the sample). Elemental abundance patterns in the Galactic disk constrain theories of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. HII region abundances are the result of billions of years of chemical evolution. We made radio recombination line and continuum measurements of 21 HII regions located between Galactic azimuth Az = 90-130 degree, a previously unexplored region. We derive the plasma electron temperatures using the line-to-continuum ratios and use them as proxies for the nebular [O/H] abundances, because in thermal equilibrium the abundance of the coolants (O, N, and other heavy elements) in the ionized gas sets the electron temperature, with high abundances producing low temperatures. Combining these data with our previous work produces a sample of 90 HII regions with high quality electron temperature determinations. We derive kinematic distances in a self-consistent way for the entire sample. The radial gradient in [O/H] is -0.082 +/- 0.014 dex/kpc for Az = 90-130 degree, about a factor of two higher than the average value between Az = 0-60 degree. Monte Carlo simulations show that the azimuthal structure we reported for Az = 0-60 degree is not significant because kinematic distance uncertainties can be as high as 50% in this region. Nonetheless, the flatter radial gradients between Az = 0-60 degree compared with Az = 90-130 degree, are significant within the uncertainty. We suggest that this may be due to radial mixing from the Galactic Bar whose major axis is aligned toward Az ~30 degree., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Using data from the all-sky Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite, we made a catalog of over 8000 Galactic HII regions and HII region candidates by searching for their characteristic mid-infrared (MIR) morphology. WISE has sufficient sensitivity to detect the MIR emission from HII regions located anywhere in the Galactic disk. We believe this is the most complete catalog yet of regions forming massive stars in the Milky Way. Of the ~8000 cataloged sources, ~1500 have measured radio recombination line (RRL) or H$\alpha$ emission, and are thus known to be HII regions. This sample improves on previous efforts by resolving HII region complexes into multiple sources and by removing duplicate entries. There are ~2500 candidate HII regions in the catalog that are spatially coincident with radio continuum emission. Our group's previous RRL studies show that ~95% of such targets are HII regions. We find that ~500 of these candidates are also positionally associated with known HII region complexes, so the probability of their being bona fide HII regions is even higher. At the sensitivity limits of existing surveys, ~4000 catalog sources show no radio continuum emission. We make a comprehensive study of HI absorption toward HII regions located within Galactic longitudes less than 10 degrees. Structures in the extreme inner Galaxy are traced using the longitude-velocity space distribution of this absorption. We find significant HI absorption associated with the Near and Far 3kpc Arms, the Connecting Arm, Banias Clump 1 and the H I Tilted Disk. The Green Bank Telescope H II Region Discovery Survey (GBT HRDS) found hundreds of previously unknown Galactic regions of massive star formation by detecting hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) emission from candidate H II region targets. Since the HRDS nebulae lie at large distances from the Sun, they are located in previously unprobed zones of the Galactic disk. Here we derive the properties of helium and carbon RRL emission from HRDS nebulae. Our target sample is the subset of the HRDS that has visible helium or carbon RRLs. This criterion gives a total of 84 velocity components (14% of the HRDS) with helium emission and 52 (9%) with carbon emission. For our highest quality sources, the average ionic He-4+/H+ abundance ratio by number, , is 0.068 +/- 0.023 (1-sigma). This is the same ratio as that measured for the sample of previously known Galactic H II regions. Nebulae without detected helium emission give robust y+ upper limits. There are 5 RRL emission components with y+ less than 0.04 and another 12 with upper limits below this value. These H II regions must have either a very low He-4 abundance or contain a significant amount of neutral helium. The HRDS has 20 nebulae with carbon RRL emission but no helium emission at its sensitivity level. We report the detection of radio recombination line emission (RRL) using the Arecibo Observatory at X-band (9GHz, 3cm) from 37 previously unknown HII regions in the Galactic zone 66 deg. > l > 31 deg. and |b| < 1 deg. This Arecibo HII Region Discovery Survey (Arecibo HRDS) is a continuation of the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) HRDS. The targets for the Arecibo HRDS have spatially coincident 24 micron and 20 cm emission of a similar angular morphology and extent. To take advantage of Arecibo's sensitivity and small beam size, sources in this sample are fainter, smaller in angle, or in more crowded fields compared to those of the GBT HRDS. These Arecibo nebulae are some of the faintest HII regions ever detected in RRL emission. Our detection rate is 58%, which is low compared to the 95% detection rate for GBT HRDS targets. We derive kinematic distances to 23 of the Arecibo HRDS detections. Four nebulae have negative LSR velocities and are thus unambiguously in the outer Galaxy. The remaining sources are at the tangent point distance or farther. We identify a large, diffuse HII region complex that has an associated HI and 13CO shell. Using the HI Emission/Absorption method, we resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity and derive distances for 149 of 182 (82%) HII regions discovered by the Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey (GBT HRDS). The HRDS is an X-band (9GHz, 3cm) GBT survey of 448 previously unknown HII regions in radio recombination line and radio continuum emission. Here we focus on HRDS sources from 67deg. > l > 18deg., where kinematic distances are more reliable. The 25 HRDS sources in this zone that have negative recombination line velocities are unambiguously beyond the orbit of the Sun, up to 20kpc distant. They are the most distant HII regions yet discovered. We find that 61% of HRDS sources are located at the far distance, 31% at the tangent point distance, and only 7% at the near distance. "Bubble" HII regions are not preferentially at the near distance (as was assumed previously) but average 10kpc from the Sun. The HRDS nebulae, when combined with a large sample of HII regions with previously known distances, show evidence of spiral structure in two circular arc segments of mean Galactocentric radii of 4.25 and 6.0kpc. We perform a thorough uncertainty analysis to analyze the effect of using different rotation curves, streaming motions, and a change to the Solar circular rotation speed. The median distance uncertainty for our sample of HII regions is only 0.5kpc, or 5%. This is significantly less than the median difference between the near and far kinematic distances, 6kpc. Using the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have detected emission in the S(0), S(1), and S(2) pure-rotational (v=0-0) transitions of molecular hydrogen (H2) towards 6 positions in two translucent high Galactic latitude clouds, DCld 300.2-16.9 and LDN 1780. The detection of these lines raises important questions regarding the physical conditions inside low-extinction clouds that are far from ultraviolet radiation sources. The ratio between the S(2) flux and the flux from PAHs at 7.9 microns averages 0.007 for these 6 positions. This is a factor of about 4 higher than the same ratio measured towards the central regions of non-active Galaxies in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). Thus the environment of these translucent clouds is more efficient at producing rotationally excited H2 per PAH-exciting photon than the disks of entire galaxies. Excitation analysis finds that the S(1) and S(2) emitting regions are warm (T >300K), but comprise no more than 2% of the gas mass. We find that UV photons cannot be the sole source of excitation in these regions and suggest mechanical heating via shocks or turbulent dissipation as the dominant cause of the emission. The clouds are located on the outskirts of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association and may be dissipating recent bursts of mechanical energy input from supernova explosions. We suggest that pockets of warm gas in diffuse or translucent clouds, integrated over the disks of galaxies, may represent a major source of all non-active galaxy H2 emission., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. The distribution of metals in the Galaxy provides important information about galaxy formation and evolution. HII regions are the most luminous objects in the Milky Way at mid-infrared to radio wavelengths and can be seen across the entire Galactic disk. We used the NRAO Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to measure radio recombination line and continuum emission in 81 Galactic HII regions. We calculated LTE electron temperatures using these data. In thermal equilibrium metal abundances are expected to set the nebular electron temperature with high abundances producing low temperatures. Our HII region distribution covers a large range of Galactocentric radius (5 to 22 kpc) and samples the Galactic azimuth range 330 degree to 60 degree. Using our highest quality data (72 objects) we derived an O/H Galactocentric radial gradient of -0.0383 +/- 0.0074 dex/kpc. Combining these data with a similar survey made with the NRAO 140 Foot telescope we get a radial gradient of -0.0446 +/- 0.0049 dex/kpc for this larger sample of 133 nebulae. The data are well fit by a linear model and no discontinuities are detected. Dividing our sample into three Galactic azimuth regions produced significantly different radial gradients that range from -0.03 to -0.07 dex/kpc. These inhomogeneities suggest that metals are not well mixed at a given radius. We stress the importance of homogeneous samples to reduce the confusion of comparing data sets with different systematics. Galactic chemical evolution models typically derive chemical evolution along only the radial dimension with time. The Green Bank Telescope HII Region Discovery Survey has doubled the number of known HII regions in the Galactic zone 343deg.\leql\leq67deg. with |b|\leq1deg. We detected 603 discrete hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) components at 9GHz (3cm) from 448 targets. Our targets were selected based on spatially coincident mid-infrared and 20cm radio continuum emission. Such sources are almost invariably HII regions; we detected hydrogen RRL emission from 95% of our target sample. The sensitivity of the Green Bank Telescope and the power of its spectrometer together made this survey possible. Here we provide a catalog of the measured properties of the RRL and continuum emission from the survey nebulae. The derived survey completeness limit, 180mJy at 9GHz, is sufficient to detect all HII regions ionized by single O-stars to a distance of 12kpc. These recently discovered nebulae share the same distribution on the sky as does the previously known census of Galactic HII regions. On average, however, the new nebulae have fainter continuum fluxes, smaller continuum angular sizes, fainter RRL intensities and smaller RRL line widths. Though small in angular size, many of our new nebulae show little spatial correlation with tracers associated with extremely young HII regions, implying that our sample spans a range of evolutionary states. We discovered 34 first quadrant negative-velocity HII regions, which lie at extreme distances from the Sun and appear to be part of the Outer Arm. We found RRL emission from 207 Spitzer GLIMPSE 8.0{\mu}m "bubble" sources, 65 of which have been cataloged previously. It thus appears that nearly all GLIMPSE bubbles are HII regions and that \sim50% of all Galactic HII regions have a bubble morphology at 8.0{\mu}m., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS

We discovered a large population of previously unknown Galactic H II regions by using the Green Bank Telescope to detect their hydrogen radio recombination line emission. Since recombination lines are optically thin at 3 cm wavelength, we can detect H II regions across the entire Galactic disk. Our targets were selected based on spatially coincident 24 micron and 21 cm continuum emission. For the Galactic zone -16 deg < L_gal < 67 deg and abs(B_gal) < 1 deg, we detected 602 discrete recombination line components from 448 lines of sight, 95% of the sample targets, which more than doubles the number of known H II regions in this part of the Milky Way. We found 25 new first quadrant nebulae with negative LSR velocities, placing them beyond the Solar orbit. Because we can detect all nebulae inside the Solar orbit that are ionized by O-stars, the Discovery Survey targets, when combined with existing H II region catalogs, give a more accurate census of Galactic H II regions and their properties. The distribution of H II regions across the Galactic disk shows strong, narrow (~ 1 kpc wide) peaks at Galactic radii of 4.3 and 6.0 kpc. The longitude-velocity distribution of H II regions now gives unambiguous evidence for Galactic structure, including the kinematic signatures of the radial peaks in the spatial distribution, a concentration of nebulae at the end of the Galactic Bar, and nebulae located on the kinematic locus of the 3 Kpc Arm., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity for 266 inner Galaxy HII regions out of a sample of 291 using existing HI and 13CO sky surveys. Our sample contains all HII regions with measured radio recombination line (RRL) emission over the extent of the 13CO Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey (18 deg, < l < 55 deg. and |b| < 1) and contains ultra compact, compact, and diffuse HII regions. We use two methods for resolving the distance ambiguity for each HII region: HI emission/absorption (HIEA) and HI self-absorption (HISA). We find that the HIEA and HISA methods can resolve the distance ambiguity for 72% and 87% of our sample, respectively. When projected onto the Galactic plane, this large sample appears to reveal aspects of Galactic structure, with spiral arm-like features at Galactocentric radii of 4.5 and 6 kpc, and a lack of HII regions within 3.5 kpc of the Galactic center. Our HII regions are approximately in the ratio of 2 to 1 for far verses near distances. The ratio of far to near distances for ultra-compact HII regions is 2.2 to 1. Compact HII regions are preferentially at the near distance; their ratio of far to near distances is 1.6 to 1. Diffuse HII regions are preferentially at the far distance; their ratio of far to near distances is 3.8 to 1. This implies that the distinction between ultra compact and compact HII regions is due largely to distance, and that the large angular size of diffuse HII regions is not due solely to proximity to the Sun., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We derive the molecular properties for a sample of 301 Galactic HII regions including 123 ultra compact (UC), 105 compact, and 73 diffuse nebulae. We analyze all sources within the BU-FCRAO Galactic Ring Survey (GRS) of 13CO emission known to be HII regions based upon the presence of radio continuum and cm-wavelength radio recombination line emission. Unlike all previous large area coverage 13CO surveys, the GRS is fully sampled in angle and yet covers ~75 square degrees of the Inner Galaxy. The angular resolution of the GRS 46" allows us to associate molecular gas with HII regions without ambiguity and to investigate the physical properties of this molecular gas. We find clear CO/HII morphological associations in position and velocity for ~80% of the nebular sample. Compact HII region molecular gas clouds are on average larger than UC clouds: 2.2' compared to 1.7'. Compact and UC HII regions have very similar molecular properties, with ~5K line intensities and ~4 km/s line widths. The diffuse HII region molecular gas has lower line intensities, ~3K, and smaller line widths, ~3.5 km/s. These latter characteristics are similar to those found for quiescent molecular clouds in the GRS. Our sample nebulae thus show evidence for an evolutionary sequence wherein small, dense molecular gas clumps associated with UC HII regions grow into older compact nebulae and finally fragment and dissipate into large, diffuse nebulae., Comment: Accepted to ApJS. The cosmic abundance of the 3-He isotope has important implications for many fields of astrophysics. We are using the 8.665 GHz hyperfine transition of 3-He+ to determine the 3-He/H abundance in Milky Way HII regions and planetary nebulae. This is one in a series of papers in which we discuss issues involved in deriving accurate 3-He/H abundance ratios from the available measurements. Here we describe the ionization correction we use to convert the 3-He+/H+ abundance, y3+, to the 3-He/H abundance, y3. In principle the nebular ionization structure can significantly influence the y3 derived for individual sources. We find that in general there is insufficient information available to make a detailed ionization correction. Here we make a simple correction and assess its validity. The correction is based on radio recombination line measurements of H+ and 4-He+, together with simple core-halo source models. We use these models to establish criteria that allow us to identify sources that can be accurately corrected for ionization and those that cannot. We argue that this effect cannot be very large for most of the sources in our observational sample. For a wide range of models of nebular ionization structure we find that the ionization correction factor varies from 1 to 1.8. We have identified 230 Tycho-2 Spectral Catalog stars that exhibit 8 micron mid-infrared extraphotospheric excesses in the MidCourse Space Experiment (MSX) and Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic Legacy MidPlane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) surveys. Of these, 183 are either OB stars earlier than B8 in which the excess plausibly arises from a thermal bremsstrahlung component or evolved stars in which the excess may be explained by an atmospheric dust component. The remaining 47 stars have spectral classifications B8 or later and appear to be main sequence or late pre-main-sequence objects harboring circumstellar disks. Six of the 47 stars exhibit multiple signatures characteristic of pre-main-sequence circumstellar disks, including emission lines, near-infrared K-band excesses, and X-ray emission. Approximately one-third of the remaining 41 sources have emission lines suggesting relative youth. Of the 25 GLIMPSE stars with SST data at >24 microns, 20 also show an excess at 24 microns. Three additional objects have 24 micron upper limits consistent with possible excesses, and two objects have photospheric measurements at 24 microns. Six MSX sources had a measurement at wavelengths >8 microns. We modeled the excesses in 26 stars having two or more measurements in excess of the expected photospheres as single-component blackbodies. We determine probable disk temperatures and fractional infrared luminosities in the range 191 < T < 787 and 3.9x10^-4 < L_IR/L_* < 2.7x10^-1. We estimate a lower limit on the fraction of Tycho-2 Spectral Catalog main-sequence stars having mid-IR, but not near-IR, excesses to be 1.0+-0.3%., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We derive the electron temperature gradient in the Galactic disk using a sample of HII regions that spans Galactocentric distances 0--17 kpc. The electron temperature was calculated using high precision radio recombination line and continuum observations for more than 100 HII regions. Nebular Galactocentric distances were calculated in a consistent manner using the radial velocities measured by our radio recombination line survey. The large number of nebulae widely distributed over the Galactic disk together with the uniformity of our data provide a secure estimate of the present electron temperature gradient in the Milky Way. Because metals are the main coolants in the photoionized gas, the electron temperature along the Galactic disk should be directly related to the distribution of heavy elements in the Milky Way. Our best estimate of the electron temperature gradient is derived from a sample of 76 sources for which we have the highest quality data. The present gradient in electron temperature has a minimum at the Galactic Center and rises at a rate of 287 +/- 46 K/kpc. There are no significant variations in the value of the gradient as a function of Galactocentric radius or azimuth. The scatter we find in the HII region electron temperatures at a given Galactocentric radius is not due to observational error, but rather to intrinsic fluctuations in these temperatures which are almost certainly due to fluctuations in the nebular heavy element abundances. Comparing the HII region gradient with the much steeper gradient found for planetary nebulae suggests that the electron temperature gradient evolves with time, becoming flatter as a consequence of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way's disk., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures (accepted for publication in the ApJ)

We report radio recombination line (RRL) and continuum observations of a sample of 106 Galactic HII regions made with the NRAO 140 Foot radio telescope in Green Bank, WV. We believe this to be the most sensitive RRL survey ever made for a sample this large. Most of our source integration times range between 6 and 90 hours which yield typical r.m.s. noise levels of 1.0--3.5 milliKelvins. Our data result from two different experiments performed, calibrated, and analyzed in similar ways. A CII survey was made at 3.5 cm wavelength to obtain accurate measurements of carbon radio recombination lines. When combined with atomic (CI) and molecular (CO) data, these measurements will constrain the composition, structure, kinematics, and physical properties of the photodissociation regions that lie on the edges of HII regions. A second survey was made at 3.5 cm wavelength to determine the abundance of 3He in the interstellar medium of the Milky Way. Together with measurements of the 3He+ hyperfine line we get high precision RRL parameters for H, 4He, and C. The Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey is a new survey of Galactic 13CO (1-0) emission. The survey used the SEQUOIA multi pixel array on the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory 14 m telescope to cover a longitude range of l = 18 deg-55.7 deg and a latitude range of |b| < 1 deg, a total of 75.4 square degrees. Using both position-switching and On-The-Fly mapping modes, we achieved an angular sampling of 22 arcsec, better than half of the telescope's 46 arcsec angular resolution. The survey's velocity coverage is -5 to 135 km/s for Galactic longitudes l <= 40 deg and -5 to 85 km/s for Galactic longitudes l > 40 deg. At the velocity resolution of 0.21 km/s, the typical rms sensitivity is sigma(TA*)~0.13 K. The survey comprises a total of 1,993,522 spectra. We show integrated intensity images (zeroth moment maps), channel maps, position-velocity diagrams, and an average spectrum of the completed survey dataset. We also discuss the telescope and instrumental parameters, the observing modes, the data reduction processes, and the emission and noise characteristics of the dataset. We used the VLA to search for 3He+ emission from two Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe): NGC6572 and J320}. Standard stellar models predict that the 3He/H abundance ratios for PNe should be 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than the primordial value (3He/H ~ 1e-5 by number) determined from Galactic HII region abundances and confirmed by WMAP cosmic microwave background results. Chemical evolution models suggest that fewer than 5% of all PNe enrich the interstellar medium (ISM) with 3He at the level of standard stellar models. Our target PNe are therefore anomalous in that they were selected from a sample deliberately biased to contain objects with properties that maximized the likelihood of a 3He detection by the VLA. We have detected the 8.665 GHz hyperfine 3He+ transition in J320 at the 4 sigma level. The 3He/H abundance ratio is 1.9e-3 with roughly a factor of two uncertainty. For NGC 6572 we find an upper limit of 3He/H <= 1e-3. This detection of 3He in J320 makes it the second PN known to have an anomalously high 3He abundance confirming that at least some low-mass stars produce significant amounts of 3He that survives to the PN stage and enriches the ISM., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures (accepted for publication in the ApJ)

The GLIMPSE (Galactic Legacy Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire) Point Source Catalog of ~ 30 million mid-infrared sources towards the inner Galaxy, 10 < |l| < 65 degrees and |b| < 1 degree, was used to determine the distribution of stars in Galactic longitude, latitude, and apparent magnitude. The counts versus longitude can be approximated by the modified Bessel function N=N_0*(l/l_0)*K_1(l/l_0), where l_0 is insensitive to limiting magnitude, band choice, and side of Galactic center: l_0= 17-30 degrees with a best fit value in the the 4.5 micron band of l_0=24 +/- 4 degrees. Modeling the source distribution as an exponential disk yields a radial scale length of H= 3.9 +/- 0.6 kpc. There is a pronounced north-south asymmetry in source counts for |l| < 30 degrees, with ~ 25% more stars in the north. For l=10-30 degrees, there is a strong enhancement of stars of m= 11.5-13.5 mag. A linear bar passing through the Galactic center with half-length R_bar=4.4 +/- 0.5 kpc, tilted by phi=44 +/- 10 degrees to the Sun-Galactic Center line, provides the simplest interpretation of this data. We examine the possibility that enhanced source counts at l=26-28 degrees, 31.5-34 degrees, and 306-309 degrees are related to Galactic spiral structure. Total source counts are depressed in regions where the counts of red objects (m_K-m_[8.0] >3) peak. In these areas, the counts are reduced by extinction due to molecular gas and/or high diffuse backgrounds associated with star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Spitzer IRAC 3.6-8 micron photometry obtained as part of the GLIMPSE survey has revealed mid-infrared excesses for 33 field stars with known spectral types in a 1.2 sq. degree field centered on the southern Galactic HII region RCW49. These stars comprise a subset of 184 stars with known spectral classification, most of which were pre-selected to have unusually red IR colors. We propose that the mid-IR excesses are caused by circumstellar dust disks that are either very late remnants of stellar formation or debris disks generated by planet formation. Of these 33 stars, 29 appear to be main-sequence stars based on optical spectral classifications. Five of the 29 main-sequence stars are O or B stars with excesses that can be plausibly explained by thermal bremsstrahlung emission, and four are post main-sequence stars. The lone O star is an O4V((f)) at a spectrophotometric distance of 3233+ 540- 535 pc and may be the earliest member of the Westerlund 2 cluster. Of the remaining 24 main-sequence stars, 18 have SEDs that are consistent with hot dusty debris disks, a possible signature of planet formation. Modeling the excesses as blackbodies demonstrates that the blackbody components have fractional bolometric disk-to-star luminosity ratios, LIR/L*, ranging from 10^-3 to 10^-2 with temperatures ranging from 220 to 820 K. The inferred temperatures are more consistent with asteroid belts rather than the cooler temperatures expected for Kuiper belts. Mid-IR excesses are found in all spectral types from late B to early K.

We report here on a survey of carbon recombination lines (RLs) near 8.5 GHz toward 17 ultra-compact \HII regions (\UCHII s). Carbon RLs are detected in 11 directions, indicating the presence of dense photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with the \UCHII s. In this paper, we show that the carbon RLs provide important, complementary information on the kinematics and physical properties of the ambient medium near \UCHII s. Non-LTE models for the carbon line forming region are developed, assuming that the PDRs surround the \UCHII s, and we constrained the model parameters by multi-frequency RL data. Modeling shows that carbon RL emission near 8.5 GHz is dominated by stimulated emission and hence we preferentially observe the PDR material that is in front of the \UCHII continuum. We find that the relative motion between ionized gas and the associated PDR is about half that estimated earlier, and has an RMS velocity difference of 3.3 \kms. Our models also give estimates for the PDR density and pressure. We found that the neutral density of PDRs is typically $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^5$ \cmthree and \UCHII s can be embedded in regions with high ambient pressure. Our results are consistent with a pressure confined \HII region model where the stars are moving relative to the cloud core. Other models cannot be ruled out, however. Interestingly, in most cases, the PDR pressure is an order of magnitude larger than the pressure of the ionized gas. Spitzer Space Telescope imaging as part of the Galactic Legacy Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE) reveals a previously unidentified low-latitude rich star cluster near l=31.3 degrees, b=-0.1 degrees. Near-infrared JHK' photometry from the Wyoming Infrared Observatory indicates an extinction of A_V ~ 15+/-3 mag for cluster members. Analysis of 13CO features along the same sightline suggests a probable kinematic distance of 3.1 -- 5.2 kpc. The new cluster has an angular diameter of ~1-2 pc, a total magnitude m_{K_0}=2.1 corrected for extinction, and a luminosity of M_K ~ -10.3 at 3.1 kpc. In contrast to young massive Galactic clusters with ages <100 Myr, the new cluster has no significant radio emission. Comparison to theoretical K-band luminosity functions indicates an age of at least several Gyr and a mass of at least 10^5 solar masses. Unlike known old open clusters, this new cluster lies in the inner Galaxy at R_{GC} ~ 6.1 kpc. We designate this object ``GLIMPSE-C01'' and classify it as a Milky Way globular cluster passing through the Galactic disk. We also identify a region of star formation and fan-shaped outflows from young stellar objects in the same field as the cluster. We determine and tabulate A(lambda)/A(K), the wavelength dependence of interstellar extinction, in the Galactic plane for 1.25um

GLIMPSE imaging using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope indicates that star formation is ongoing in the RCW 49 giant H II region. A photometric comparison of the sources in RCW 49 to a similar area to its north finds that at least 300 stars brighter than 13th magnitude in band [3.6] have infrared excesses inconsistent with reddening due to foreground extinction. These are likely young stellar objects (YSOs) more massive than 2.5 M_sun suggesting that thousands more low-mass stars are forming in this cloud. Some of the YSOs are massive (B stars) and therefore very young, suggesting that a new generation of star formation is occurring, possibly triggered by stellar winds and shocks generated by the older (2-3 Myr) central massive cluster. The Spitzer IRAC camera has proven to be ideally suited for distinguishing young stars from field stars, and the GLIMPSE survey of the Galactic Plane will likely find thousands of new star formation regions., Comment: Accepted by ApJS, Spitzer edition. 9 pages, 6 figures.
