Abstract

This open access book is compilation of selected papers from 2nd International Conference on Innovative Solutions in Hydropower Engineering and Civil Engineering (HECE 2022). The work focuses on novel techniques for topics in hydropower and sustainable development, maximizing and communicating the multiple benefits of hydro, the food-water-energy nexus approach, synergy among the renewables, making hydro more competitive (managing and mitigating risk), regional development through power trading, hydropower technology, civil engineering, materials for dams and appurtenant works, advances in design and construction techniques, recent developments in dam construction, monitoring and engineering for safe structures and sites. Hydropower offers significant potential for carbon emissions reductions. The installed capacity of hydropower by the end of 2008 contributed 16% of worldwide electricity supply, and hydropower remains the largest source of renewable energy in the electricity sector. The contents make valuable contributions to academic researchers, engineers in the industry, and regulators of hydropower and civil engineering authorities.

25. Mechanisms of soil plug formation of open-ended jacked pipe pile in clay

Abstract

The mechanisms of soil plug formation during the jacking of an open-ended pipe pile into clay is investigated by using Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method. According to the evolution of soil velocity field, the formation of soil plug is divided into: the upwelling stage, the partially plugged stage and the fully plugged stage. A concave arch is formed below the pile tip when the stress bulb expands from the pile wall to the pile axis. The initial soil plug and the fully soil plug are formed when the vertical stress increment of the soil below the pile tip reaches 6 and 9–10 times undrained shear strength (Su), respectively. The results show that soil plug is easier to be formed in the pile with smaller diameter. The pipe pile shows a fully plugged mode in the stiff soil overlaying soft soil, while pipe pile shows a partially plugged mode in the soft soil overlaying stiff soil. The soil plug is hard to be formed in inhomogeneous clay due to the higher soil strength of deeper soil. An effective method is proposed to estimate the formation of soil plug with the equation for vertical stress increment of the soil below the pile tip.

28. Safety Assessment of an Aging Offshore Jacket Platform by Integrating Analytic Hierarchy Process and Grey Clustering Method

Abstract

It is a significant task to assess the safety of the aging offshore jacket platform in order to extend the service life. This paper analyzes the multiple risk factors of an aging jacket platform in Bohai Bay, China and builds the safety evaluation index system, which includes three levels, namely, the target layer, the first-grade indicators layer and the second-grade indicators layer. The target layer consists of three first-grade indicators: ocean environments, structure status, and human and organizational factors. Each first-grade indicator is divided into three second-grade indicators. The weight of each indicator is calculated by analytic hierarchy process to weaken subjective effect. Grey clustering method is applied to estimate the failure risk of the platform in Bohai Bay qualitatively and quantitatively. The assessment standard is divided into five grades and the whitening function of each grey cluster is determined by the assessment scheme. The grey evaluation weight vector of each second-grade indicator is calculated by the table dispatching method. Through layer by layer calculation, the grey assessment value of the target layer is finally estimated by making the grey assessment weight vector single-value and the grey grade is determined according to the maximum principle. The evaluation results show quantitatively that the failure risk grade of the jacket platform in Bohai Bay is medium and the safety assessment method is reasonable and feasible.

29. Simulation of T-bar penetration in soft clay with adhesive contact.

Abstract

To model the deep penetration process of T-bar in soft clay, an adhesive contact algorithm was developed in conjunction with the Coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian approach with consideration of the effect of strain softening. Numerical results show the simulated penetration resistance agrees well with the previous centrifuge experimental data. The failure mechanisms of the clay around the T-bar can be divided into three stages, including shallow penetration stage with global failure mechanism, partially and fully back-flow stages with local failure mechanism. Fluctuations of the penetration resistance can be explained by the formation and evolution of shear bands around the T-bar. Newly formed shear bands would intersect the previously formed shear bands in the partially back-flow stage, which results in the formation of "ear-shaped" areas rotating anticlockwise around the T-bar.
