Studies assess children's satisfaction with their current placement experiences in South Australian alternative care. Over 80 per cent of children reported being satisfied with both their case-worker and their placement, although children in residential care reported being less satisfied than their counterparts in foster care. Predictors of alcohol consumption were investigated across age and sex among junior and senior high school students (N=1,942). The dominant predictor for young boys was whether their friends drink; for girls it was related to interpersonal disorder. Peer pressure was important for older girls and continued dominant for boys. Randomly assigned 30 prisoners undergoing treatment for heroin addiction to either standard Drug Unit treatment program or to standard program plus single exposure to computerized relapse prevention package. Found immediate improvement in self-efficacy of computer group relative to standard group. Three months later, both groups displayed similar levels of self-efficacy and similar pattern of self-reported drug use. (Author/NB)

Proposed that perception of relative danger of various drugs is crucial mediator of support people give to social control policies. Interviewed approximately 540 people, requesting that respondents assess danger level of 13 different drugs and indicate degree of support for some social control items. Found that considerable proportion of total support offered was channeled through mediator "perception." (Author/NB)

A situation in which foster parents in South Australia are paid special need loadings to take care of children with behaviourial disorders, is discussed in terms of the increasing inelasticity of the labour supply curve. The magnitudes of the effect are estimated using a logistic regression model with loading status as the dependent and conduct disorder as a predictor.
