This article reports the findings from a scenario planning study with four organizations. The focus of the study was to determine the effects of scenario planning on participant perceptions of organizational agility. Researchers gathered pre and posttest organizational agility perception data from participants in four companies surrounding scenario work that lasted approximately four months. Results show no significant change in participant perceptions of organizational agility attributable to scenario planning. Implications, limitations and conclusions are discussed. Background: Delirium is an acute organ dysfunction common amongst patients treated in intensive care units. The associated morbidity and mortality are known to be substantial. Previous surveys have described which screening tools are used to diagnose delirium and which medications are used to treat delirium, but these data are not available for the United Kingdom. Aim: This survey aimed to describe the UK management of delirium by consultant intensivists. Additionally, knowledge and attitudes towards management of delirium were sought. The results will inform future research in this area. Methods: A national postal survey of members of the UK Intensive Care Society was performed. A concise two page questionnaire survey was sent, with a second round of surveys sent to non-respondents after 6 weeks. The questionnaire was in tick-box format. Results: Six hundred and eighty-one replies were received from 1308 questionnaires sent, giving a response rate of 52%. Twenty-five percent of respondents routinely screen for delirium, but of these only 55% use a screening tool validated for use in intensive care. The majority (80%) of those using a validated instrument used the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit. Hyperactive delirium is treated pharmacologically by 95%; hypoactive delirium is treated pharmacologically by 25%, with haloperidol the most common agent used in both. Over 80% of respondents agreed that delirium prolongs mechanical ventilation and hospital stay and requires active treatment. Conclusions: This UK survey demonstrates screening for delirium is sporadic. Pharmacological treatment is usually with haloperidol in spite of the limited evidence to support this practice. Aims: A new real-time PCR assay that simultaneously amplifies a 102-bp fragment of the cagE gene from Helicobacter pylori and a new internal positive control containing a specific sequence of the gyrB gene from Aeromonas hydrophila, was developed and validated for the detection of H. pylori in environmental samples. Methods and Results: The specificity, limits of detection and quantification, repeatability, reproducibility, and accuracy of the method were calculated. The resulting values confirmed the applicability of the method for the quantitative detection of H. pylori. The feasibility of the method was also evaluated by testing 13 pyloric antrum-positive biopsies and 69 water samples, including potable (10), surface (19) and wastewater (40) matrices. The results showed that all the biopsies and 3 of the 40 wastewater samples analysed were positive. Conclusions: This real-time PCR method provides a sensitive, specific, and accurate method for the rapid quantification of H. pylori in environmental samples. Significance and Impact of the Study: The PCR diagnostic system proposed in this work, provides a suitable tool for the quantitative detection of H. pylori in environmental samples and can be useful for verifying the role of water as a potential route of its transmission. The statocyst of Pecten is composed of hair cells and supporting cells. The hair cells bear kinocilia and microvilli at their distal ends and the supporting cells bear microvilli. The cilia have a 9+2 internal filament content, and arise from basal bodies that have roots, basal feet and microtubular connections. Two different ciliary arrangements are described, one with a small number of cilia arranged in a ring, and another with many more cilia arranged in rows. Below the hair cells are probable synapses. A ciliated duct connects to the lumen of the static sac and passes through the centre of the static nerve. The hair cells in the statocyst of Pterotrachea bear kinocilia and microvilli.
