Tick-transmitted Babesia are a major global veterinary threat and an emerging risk to humans. Unlike their Plasmodium relatives, these erythrocyte-infecting Apicomplexa have been largely overlooked and lack specific treatment. Selective targeting of the Babesia proteasome holds promise for drug development. In this study, we screened a library of peptide epoxyketone inhibitors derived from the marine natural product carmaphycin B for their activity against Babesia. Several of these compounds showed activity against both the asexual and sexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum. These compounds inactivate β5 proteasome subunit activity in the lysates of Babesia divergens and Babesia microti in the low nanomolar range. Several compounds were tested with the purified B. divergens proteasome and showed IC50 values comparable to carfilzomib, an approved anticancer proteasome inhibitor. They also inhibited B. divergens growth in bovine erythrocyte cultures with solid EC50 values, but importantly, they appeared less toxic to human cells than carfilzomib. These compounds therefore offer a wider therapeutic window and provide new insights into the development of small proteasome inhibitors as selective drugs for babesiosis.

Este estudo tem o objetivo de identificar traços de Economia Solidária emergentes em uma cidade periférica brasileira, bem como verificar a influência do contexto político-institucional do processo de implementação das políticas voltadas ao fomento. Utilizou-se o método exploratório, de base descritiva e com realização de pesquisas de campo. O estudo relata situação de fragilidade ocupacional, demandas por apoio político e dimensão pública mais moderna que possa apoiar o âmbito social da Economia Solidária, bem como proporcionar melhor bem-estar social e sobrevivência digna para seus associados. Concluiu-se que, o artesanato está em crescimento, porém o movimento de Economia Solidária ainda está às margens das políticas públicas, precisando ser incorporado à Agenda Governamental para o desenvolvimento sustentável.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and vermicompost can be efficient in enhancing the accumulation of metabolites, whereas there are no reports about their effects on antioxidant bioactive molecules and Sun Protection Factor (SPF) in Anadenanthera colubrina, a species used in cosmetic formulations. We hypothesized that the combination of AMF inoculation and vermicompost supplementation would synergistically optimize the production of these compounds and improve the antioxidant capacity and SPF of the plant leaves. A completely randomized experiment was set up in a factorial design with three mycorrhizal inoculation treatments (control, Acaulospora longula, and Gigaspora albida) and two substrate proportions (soil alone and soil with 10% vermicompost). After 126 days, the leaves were harvested to evaluate the content of primary metabolites, phenolics, antioxidant capacity, and SPF. Vermicompost did not synergize with AMF to enhance biomolecule synthesis in A. colubrina; instead, it neutralized the mycorrhizal effects. However, plants grown in soil supplemented with vermicompost showed an increase in metabolite and SPF accumulation compared to those grown solely in soil. Seedlings colonized by G. albida and grown in soil also exhibited enhanced anabolism. Therefore, this is the first report in the literature regarding the mitigating effect of vermicompost application on the SPF of mycorrhizal plants. Future studies should consider analyzing these factors in field conditions to attest the need of these agricultural tools.

Ao longo da escolarização, aprendemos que a matéria é formada por prótons, nêutrons e elétrons, mas os prótons e nêutrons são compostos por partículas menores chamadas quarks. A busca por essas partículas resultou no Modelo Padrão da Física de Partículas, que teve uma importante lacuna preenchida em 2012 com a descoberta do Bóson de Higgs. Apesar de sua relevância, o significado dessa descoberta é frequentemente mal compreendido pela sociedade. Diante disso, uma pesquisa bibliográfica qualitativa foi conduzida para investigar como a mídia divulgou esta descoberta, utilizando a Teoria das Representações Sociais e o Modelo Padrão de Partículas. A análise de conteúdo, baseada no método de Bardin, identificou cinco categorias de informações presentes nas mídias, abordando desde a importância teórica do Modelo Padrão até os detalhes práticos dos experimentos que confirmaram o Bóson de Higgs.

Introducción: En los últimos años, la transmisión del virus MPXV entre humanos se ha informado con frecuencia. A pesar de esto, hay escasez de estudios con evidencia sólida que oriente la práctica asistencial centrada en casos de mpox humana. Objetivo: Analizar la evidencia científica en la literatura que aborda aspectos clínicos relacionados con casos de mpox humana a nivel mundial. Materiales y Métodos: Revisión integradora, realizada en cinco bases de datos: SCOPUS, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE /PubMed y CINAHL. La última fecha de acceso a las bases de datos fue el 3 de octubre de 2024. La selección de estudios y el informe de la revisión siguieron las recomendaciones de la guía Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Resultados: Con una muestra de 58 estudios, los principales hallazgos fueron aspectos relacionados con signos y síntomas, transmisión, diagnóstico, prevención y atención del equipo multidisciplinario y del equipo de enfermería. Discusión: No se encontraron estudios que abordaran con frecuencia y de forma específica el cuidado del equipo multidisciplinario y, sobre todo, del equipo de enfermería. Por lo tanto, los resultados identificados en esta revisión pueden facilitar el tratamiento de pacientes con infecciones relacionadas con MPXV. Conclusiones: Este estudio promovió el levantamiento de evidencia científica que respalda la atención a los pacientes con MPXV humano para la práctica del equipo multidisciplinario y del equipo de enfermería, que contribuyen a la prevención, detección temprana y tratamiento de la infección por el virus MPXV y sus posibles complicaciones.

Abstract Background The rapid spread and increase of chikungunya (CHIKV) and dengue (DENV) cases in Brazilian regions in 2023 has raised concerns about the impact of arboviruses on public health. Epidemiological and genomic surveillance was performed to estimate the introduction and spread of CHIKV and DENV in Brazil. Methods This study obtained results from the Hermes Pardini (HP), a private medical laboratory, and the Health Department of Minas Gerais state (SES-MG). We investigated the positivity rates of CHIKV and DENV by analyzing the results of 139,457 samples tested for CHIKV (44,029 in 2022 and 95,428 in 2023) and 491,528 samples tested for DENV (163,674 in 2022 and 327,854 in 2023) across the five representative geographical regions of Brazil. Genome sequencing was performed on 80 CHIKV and 153 DENV samples that had been positive for RT-PCR tests. Results In our sampling, the data from CHIKV tests indicated that the Northeast region had the highest regional positivity rate in 2022 (58.1%). However, in 2023, the Southeast region recorded the highest positivity rate (40.5%). With regard to DENV, the South region exhibited the highest regional positivity rate in both 2022 (40.8%) and 2023 (22.7%), followed by the Southeast region in both years (34.8% in 2022; 21.4% in 2023). During the first 30 epidemiological weeks of 2023 in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), there was a 5.8-fold increase in CHIKV cases and a 3.5-fold increase in DENV compared to the same period in 2022. Analysis of 151 new DENV-1 and 80 CHIKV genomes revealed the presence of three main clusters of CHIKV and circulation of several DENV lineages in MG. All CHIKV clades are closely related to genomes from previous Brazilian outbreaks in the Northeast, suggesting importation events from this region to MG. We detected the RNA of both viruses in approximately 12.75% of the confirmed positive cases, suggesting an increase of co-infection with DENV and CHIKV during the period of analysis. Conclusions These high rates of re-emergence and co-infection with both arboviruses provide useful data for implementing control measures of Aedes vectors and the urgent implementation of public health politics to reduce the numbers of CHIKV and DENV cases in the country.

Abstract We presented a method to find potential cancer attractors using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. We tested our method in a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) dataset, an aggressive brain tumor presenting high heterogeneity. Using the cancer attractor concept, we argued that the GBM’s underlying dynamics could partially explain the observed heterogeneity, with the dataset covering a representative region around the attractor. Exploratory data analysis revealed promising GBM’s cellular clusters within a 3-dimensional marker space. We approximated the clusters’ centroid as stable states and each cluster covariance matrix as defining confidence regions. To investigate the presence of attractors inside the confidence regions, we constructed a GBM gene regulatory network, defined a model for the dynamics, and prepared a framework for parameter estimation. An exploration of hyperparameter space allowed us to sample time series intending to simulate myriad variations of the tumor microenvironment. We obtained different densities of stable states across gene expression space and parameters displaying multistability across different clusters. Although we used our methodological approach in studying GBM, we would like to highlight its generality to other types of cancer. Therefore, this report contributes to an advance in the simulation of cancer dynamics and opens avenues to investigate potential therapeutic targets.

Abstract The production of açaí seed waste from the commercial and extractive exploitation of the Euterpe oleraceae palm tree is a serious problem that contributes to environmental contamination and production of greenhouse gases, a fact that suggests the need for an environmentally correct destination for this waste produced on a large scale. To this end, this study was conducted to evaluate the potential of acaí seed biochar (BCA) in mitigating the toxic effects of copper in Brazilian mahogany plants, analyzing biometrics and gas exchange. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with five blocks, in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme, corresponding to the control (without Cu) and three concentration of Cu (200, 400, and 600 mg Cu kg−1) and three levels of BCA (0%, 5% and 10%) proportional to the amount of soil in the pots, totaling sixty experimental units. The use of 5% BCA in soils contaminated with up to 200 mg kg−1 Cu promoted biometric increase (height, diameter, number of leaves), maintaining gas exchange (photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, internal carbon and internal/external carbon), and consequently, maintaining water use efficiency in plants under abiotic stress, resulting in plant growth. The findings of this study allow us to indicate the use of biochar in remediating and improving the growth of plants grown in copper-contaminated soils. The production of biochar from açaí seeds is an ecologically sustainable alternative, because it reduces its accumulation on public roads and contributes to reducing soil pollution. In the context of public policies, biochar production could be a source of income in the context of the bioeconomy and circular economy practiced in the Amazon, because it is produced in large quantities.

O Programa Ensino Integral (PEI) paulista introduziu um conjunto de reformas educacionais em escolas públicas, alterando a cultura institucional e a relação professor-aluno. Embora a literatura tenha indicado as consequências sociais da reforma, como a amplificação de desigualdades socioespaciais e a alteração das relações de trabalho docente, permanece como lacuna de investigação de qual modo o programa influenciou as práticas pedagógicas em disciplinas de ciências da natureza em escolas de periferia. O presente artigo visa compreender a relação entre os discursos e as representações dos professores de Química acerca dos alunos e das reformas introduzidas pelo PEI em escolas da periferia urbana. Este é um estudo guiado pela abordagem bourdieusiana, especialmente o conceito de poder simbólico, com o objetivo de explorar as práticas de classificação dos alunos e suas consequências para práticas pedagógicas em aulas de Química. Para a condução deste estudo, empregamos os princípios da etnografia crítica, com o uso dos métodos qualitativos, observações e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Os resultados indicam que a busca por um perfil ideal de estudantes, alinhado aos princípios do PEI, está relacionada à exclusão dos alunos e à elaboração de discursos de déficit, que associam a origem sócio-geográfica dos estudantes a obstáculos de aprendizagem nas aulas de Química. Conclui-se que os discursos dos docentes emergem por meio de processos classificatórios encapsulados por representações sobre raça, classe e espaço geográfico.

Noroviruses are highly contagious and are one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Due to a lack of effective antiviral therapies, there is a need to diagnose and surveil norovirus infections to implement quarantine protocols and prevent large outbreaks. Currently, the gold standard of diagnosis uses reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), but PCR can have limited availability. Here, we propose a combination of a tunable peptide substrate and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to colorimetrically detect the Southampton norovirus 3C-like protease (SV3CP), a key protease in viral replication. Careful design of the substrate employs a zwitterionic peptide with opposite charged moieties on the C- and N- termini to induce a rapid color change visible to the naked eye; thus, this color change is indicative of SV3CP activity. This work expands on existing zwitterionic peptide strategies for protease detection by systematically evaluating the effects of lysine and arginine on nanoparticle charge screening. We also determine a limit of detection for SV3CP of 28.0 nM with comparable results in external breath condensate, urine, and fecal matter for 100 nM of SV3CP. The key advantage of this system is its simplicity and accessibility, thus making it an attractive tool for qualitative point-of-care diagnostics.

Background: Ineffective health maintenance behaviors (00292) is an important nursing diagnosis in the context of chronic conditions. However, it is observed that the etiology of this phenomenon is not well defined for this population. For nurses to infer this diagnosis early and, consequently, develop effective care plans, further studies are needed to facilitate the understanding of the factors related to the phenomenon. Objective: To analyze the factors related to the ineffective health maintenance behaviors nursing diagnosis in people with chronic conditions. Methods: A systematic review of related factors conducted in Scopus (Elsevier), Web of Science, Science Direct (Elsevier), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PubMed), CINAHL with Full Text (EBSCO), EMBASE (Elsevier) and Google Scholar. The last access date in the data sources was August 31, 2023. For the critical assessment of eligible studies, the checklists for quantitative studies from the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis were adopted. PROSPERO: CRD42022378870. Results: A total of 21 studies were included and 18 related factors were retrieved. Regarding study characterization, the majority were published in 2022 (33.3 %), North America was the continent with the highest number of studies (42.8 %) and 85.7 % of studies were cross-sectional. Cardiovascular diseases was the most prevalent chronic condition in the studies at 76.1 %. The five main related factors identified were low self-efficacy, individuals with a low level of education, multimorbidity, economically disadvantaged individuals and inadequate health literacy. Of the 18 related factors identified, 11 are not included in the NANDA-International taxonomy classification. Conclusion: A total of 18 factors related to ineffective health maintenance behaviors in people with chronic conditions were identified in the studies. This study may assist nursing professionals’ clinical practice by providing support in relation to the early detection of the phenomenon through the identification of new related factors.

ABSTRACT Coconut palm cultivation is associated with the generation of a large amount of residues, mainly from coconut shells, and their utilization in agriculture can represent an opportunity in the context of circular economy and climate change. This study aimed to determine the effect of coconut shell deposition on carbon (C) stocks, organic matter quality, and soil water retention in coconut palm cultivation in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The study was conducted in a commercial coconut palm cultivation area in Petrolina, Pernambuco State, Brazil, forming a chronosequence with 0, 2, 4, 5 and 6 years of coconut shells or coconut leaves application on soil surface. Carbon contents and stocks up to 0.40 m deep, the physical quality of soil organic matter, and soil water retention were evaluated. Coconut leaves and coconut shells increased organic C content in the surface layers of the soil, but the addition of residues did not influence soil C stocks. The light fraction of organic matter (>53 µm) was more sensitive to the management studied, while the heavy fraction of organic matter (53 µm and the highest soil water retention were observed three years after the deposition of coconut shells on the surface, which suggests the need for reapplying the residues after this period to maintain the benefits.

RESUMO A profusão de efemérides evidenciadas no curto período de 2017-2024 trouxe, para os historiadores e historiadoras brasileiros, a oportunidade de revisitar importantes acontecimentos históricos do nosso país durante o século XIX - particularmente no período entre o ocaso da América portuguesa e o alvorecer, cheio de penumbras e incertezas, do Brasil independente. Essas Palavras para debate tem o objetivo de discorrer sobre o Bicentenário da Confederação do Equador (1824-2024) a partir da experiência que vivenciamos na preparação e realização do V Seminário Internacional Brasil no século XIX, evento organizado pela Sociedade Brasileira de Estudos do Oitocentos. E a forma como pensamos esse evento em termos historiográficos - reforçando o compromisso com um fazer historiográfico centrado igualmente na participação das classes subalternizadas e não apenas na discussão de uma macropolítica levada a cabo pelas elites dominantes.

Desastres socioambientais têm sido recorrentes no Brasil e no mundo. Entre eles, um deslizamento de encostas no litoral norte de São Paulo, em fevereiro de 2023, causou 65 mortes, 1.009 desalojados e 1.346 desabrigados. É objetivo desta pesquisa é entender a dinâmica da atribuição de culpa e responsabilidade pelo ocorrido nas matérias do jornal Folha de S. Paulo. Foram analisadas as matérias publicadas entre os dias 20 de fevereiro e 12 de março, utilizando como aporte teórico os estudos sobre a construção das notícias nas mídias, sendo identificados três temas: a explicação do desastre; as moradias em áreas de risco e a atuação da defesa civil. A intensidade da chuva foi inicialmente responsabilizada; os moradores foram posicionados como vítimas da falta de políticas habitacionais e a defesa civil foi culpabilizada pelas falhas no sistema de gestão de riscos, incluindo a falta de estratégias de alerta e de informações sobre ações de enfrentamento.

O aumento do termo quântica atrelado à oferta de produtos que prometem curas milagrosas e uma vida mais próspera, alerta para a necessidade de discutir a origem deste termo com base em um viés científico, de modo a evitar que os sujeitos se deixem enganar por pseudociências. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identificar as representações sociais expressadas por alunos de um curso de Licenciatura em Física a respeito do termo quântica e investigar se a licenciatura foi promotora de alterações nestas representações. A metodologia utilizada é de natureza qualitativa, fundamentada na teoria do núcleo central. A coleta dos dados foi feita a partir da aplicação de um questionário com os participantes e a técnica utilizada foi a Evocação Livre de Palavras. Para a análise dos dados, utilizou-se a Análise Prototípica a fim de identificar o provável núcleo das Representações Sociais. Os resultados indicam que os alunos ingressantes associam o termo quântica à Física, mas não conseguem elaborar uma justificativa aprofundada a respeito dessa associação, enquanto os alunos concluintes demonstraram representações influenciadas pelo conhecimento científico. Com isso, conclui-se que houve uma mudança nas representações dos sujeitos e que essa mudança está relacionada com as influências do processo de formação.

Vertical Farming Systems (VFS) emerge as an approach to optimize plant growth in urban and controlled environments, by enabling sustainable and intensive production in reduced spaces. VFS allow for greater control over growing conditions, such as light, temperature and humidity, resulting in higher quality crops and with less use of resources, such as water and fertilizers. This research investigates the effects of different lighting regimes (Constant and Gaussian) and spectral qualities (white, RBW, blue and red) on the growth, photosynthesis, and biomass accumulation of lentil microgreens (Lens culinaris) in VFS. The results demonstrate that constant lighting regimes, particularly under red, white, and RBW lights, significantly increase biomass production and energy efficiency. On the other hand, the Gaussian regime promotes the accumulation of bioactive compounds such as carotenoids, especially under red light. Chlorophyll content and the photochemical coefficient (qP) also varied across treatments, with significant variations between lighting regimes and spectral combinations. Tailored lighting strategies, adjusted to specific production goals, have the potential to enhance both productivity and nutritional quality in VFS. The analysis contained in the research provides relevant information for optimizing lighting management in controlled agricultural environments, providing practical applications to improve harvest performance.

The rapid development and introduction of new psychoactive substances (NPS) into illegal markets present an enormous challenge for forensic toxicologists, as there is limited knowledge about their toxicity in humans. To strengthen forensic interpretation of NPS intoxication cases, we have developed a predictive model for estimating human lethal blood concentrations (LBC) of various NPS. This quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model focuses on opioids, designer benzodiazepines, synthetic cathinones, synthetic cannabinoids, and phenethylamines. Utilising linear regression and multilayer perceptron algorithms, the models was trained using data from the existing literature. A toxicological significance-based approach have been applied to refine the selection of training data. The model demonstrated satisfactory performance metrics through cross-validation (R ≈ 0.8, MAE ≈ 0.6) and comparison with experimental data (R ≈ 0.9). A Python-based web application have been developed to facilite the use of the created model in predicting LBC of NPS. Despite the model's reliability, limitations due to data availability, quality and the complexities of post-mortem toxicology mean that its predictions should be interpreted with caution.

Introdução: É crescente o uso de dispositivos eletrônicos para fumar entre jovens. Objetivo: Descrever a relação entre o uso de cigarro eletrônico e a saúde mental, mais especificamente voltado para o Transtorno de Ansiedade Generalizada, de estudantes de medicina. Método: Coletado o TCLE (Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido). Parecer CEP: Universidade de Ribeirão Preto, UNAERP, CAAE: 69249523.8.0000.5498. Número do Parecer: 6.187.957. Estudo observacional com amostra de 122 estudantes de Medicina, na faixa etária de 18 a 50 anos. Analisaram-se, principalmente, a saúde mental e a dependência nicotínica de usuários de cigarro eletrônico, através de coleta de dados por meio de um questionário com 28 questões, baseadas na Escala de Ansiedade de Hamilton e no Teste de Fargeström. Realizando-se análise descritiva. Foi feita, também, regressão logística, tendo como variável dependente o uso de cigarro eletrônico e como variáveis independentes: o sexo, a presença de diagnóstico psiquiátrico prévio e a presença de sintomas de ansiedade. Resultados: Dos 122 estudantes que responderam ao questionário, 66,39% são mulheres e 73,33% já tiveram algum diagnóstico psiquiátrico. Além disso, 31,96% da amostra total são fumantes. Destes, 44,26% utilizam cigarro eletrônico. Após a regressão logística, encontramos que ter diagnóstico psiquiátrico prévio aumenta a chance de fazer uso de cigarro eletrônico (odds ratio ajustado = 3,29; intervalo de confiança de 95%: 1,17 – 9,23). Conclusão: O uso de cigarros eletrônicos entre os estudantes de medicina está associado a níveis de ansiedade, destacando os usuários com diagnóstico prévio psiquiátrico, o que aumenta a chance de seu uso, necessitando de prevenção e cessação, para melhor saúde do aluno.

ABSTRACT: For 2160 broilers, were raised from 1 to 42 d of age, was evaluated the consequences of microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds on dietary supplementation in broilers on meat quality and consumer acceptance during 200 d. Broilers were randomly distributed in a completely randomized design with 6 treatments: Negative control (NC): basal diet; Positive control (PC): NC+ Zinc bacitracin 15%; B150: NC+150 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds; B300: NC+300 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds; B450:NC+450 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds; and B600:NC+600 g/t of the microencapsulated blend of organic acids and bioactive compounds. The poultry meat characteristics (thawing loss, cooking loss, shear force, color and microstructure of the meat), oxidative stability (lipid oxidation, antioxidant activity DPPH and ABTS) and consumer acceptance (visual appraisal and willingness to buy) were evaluated. Color parameters (L and b), thawing losses and shear force were not significantly different among the treatments (NC, PC, B150, B300, B450 and B600; P > 0.05). The highest level of a was in the PC. The cooking losses were the greatest in B600. No treatment showed changes in muscle fibers. The antioxidant activity for DPPH was higher for B600. For ABTS, B150 and B300 presented the least lipid oxidation. When evaluating consumers' visual preference, B300 had the greatest in consumer preference and B150 and B300 had the greatest purchase intention on the first day of storage. After 6 d, B300 continued to be the most preferred and B150 and B450 began to show the greatest purchase intention. The B300 treatment showed a protective effect on lipid stability and consumer preference. These results highlight the importance of using a precise additive dosage during animal production to guarantee the meat's quality and satisfy consumers’ demands.

In this paper, we present our study into how teaching practices in chemistry are socially stratified under the center-suburban divide in a medium-sized city, located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The paper mainly draws upon the Bourdieusian-inspired concepts of institutional habitus and symbolic capital to examine how institutional discourses and norms are embodied and implemented by chemistry teachers in their pedagogical practices, and the way in which this affects the distribution of chemistry knowledge in the classroom. This study is a comparative ethnographic-based investigation which employs multiple qualitative methods to investigate chemistry classes in two public schools in Brazil. The schools were selected based on their achievements in large-scale assessment tests and socioeconomic composition. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of four months of observational data of chemistry classes, school routines, 12 focus groups composed of high school students, and four semi-structured interviews conducted with teachers and staff, we argue that chemistry teaching is partially influenced by two interrelated dimensions of the school's institutional habitus--the schools' reputation and their students' social profile. Students in different schools tend to have unequal opportunities for learning and identification with chemistry. For instance, in the suburban school, students are seen as having learning deficiencies and are given deficit explanations on scientific concepts during classes, while the students from the school in the city center are taught under a pervasive culture centered around academic achievements, intense competition and individuality. The aforementioned factors largely shape chemistry teaching in the two public schools investigated. We conclude by presenting our final considerations on how educational institutions play an influential role in shaping chemistry teaching practices.

A região Nordeste é uma das principais produtoras de banana do Brasil, e na Paraíba, essa produção se concentra principalmente na microrregião do Brejo Paraibano. No entanto, a produção de banana nessa microrregião tem enfrentado alguns gargalos produtivos. Nesse sentido, este estudo objetivou avaliar a dinâmica produtiva da bananicultura nessa microrregião, usando como recorte temporal o período de 2001 a 2021. Os dados utilizados para essa pesquisa foram obtidos junto ao banco de informações da Pesquisa Agrícola Municipal do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam a retração da bananicultura no Brejo Paraibano. No entanto, durante toda a série histórica avaliada, a participação da bananicultura foi superior a 80% do valor da produção das lavouras permanentes produzidas nessa microrregião, evidenciando que essa cultura permanece como a principal lavoura permanente produzida. Dada a importância socioeconômica da bananicultura para o Brejo Paraibano, torna-se necessária a implementação de ações de reestruturação dessa cadeia produtiva, de modo que sejam alcançadas melhores métricas produtivas e o fortalecimento local desse segmento.

Abstract Culture-based microbial natural product discovery strategies fail to realize the extraordinary biosynthetic potential detected across earth’s microbiomes. Here we introduce Small Molecule In situ Resin Capture (SMIRC), a culture-independent method to obtain natural products directly from the environments in which they are produced. We use SMIRC to capture numerous compounds including two new carbon skeletons that were characterized using NMR and contain structural features that are, to the best of our knowledge, unprecedented among natural products. Applications across diverse marine habitats reveal biome-specific metabolomic signatures and levels of chemical diversity in concordance with sequence-based predictions. Expanded deployments, in situ cultivation, and metagenomics facilitate compound discovery, enhance yields, and link compounds to candidate producing organisms, although microbial community complexity creates challenges for the later. This compound-first approach to natural product discovery provides access to poorly explored chemical space and has implications for drug discovery and the detection of chemically mediated biotic interactions.

AbstractFrom our roles within international public health organizations, we have collectively witnessed the global challenges presented by outdated health information systems, platforms, and applications. The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly exposed the limitations of our current paper-based vaccine certification methods and highlighted the deficiencies of outdated technological platforms that lack interoperability standards, a situation that underscores the critical need for a digital transformation in how we manage and verify immunization records. Digital vaccination certificates are understood to be secure, electronically stored, and easily accessible records that provide verifiable proof of a person’s immunization status. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) envisions leveraging digital technologies to strengthen health systems, enhance data-driven decision-making, and improve health outcomes. The organization’s vision emphasizes the integration of innovative technologies to build resilient and responsive health systems capable of addressing modern public health challenges. In an era of unprecedented technological advancement, our continued reliance on paper-based vaccine certificates is not just anachronistic—it is a significant liability for global public health that impacts the efficiency and effectiveness of our health systems on multiple fronts, limiting our ability to respond to public health crises effectively. With the strategic guidance from its Member States, PAHO has agreed to move toward the digital transformation of the health sector across the entire continent with an initiative that aims to improve health outcomes, ensure equitable access to health services, and enhance the overall efficiency of health systems in the Americas. The roadmap for this digital transformation outlines strategic actions and goals to achieve a connected, efficient, and resilient health sector.

Este artigo propõe discutir o modo como o sujeito que faz uso abusivo de crack vivencia as extremas modificações em seu corpo. Abordam-se noções de corpo, imagem, pulsão e gozo, na perspectiva psicanalítica de um corpo erógeno, regulado pelo desejo. Trata-se de um estudo de caso em que falas de um sujeito – que faz uso de crack – sobre seu corpo foram obtidas por entrevista com enfoque biográfico, surgindo as chamadas falas de morte, ou o que denominamos Nomes-do-Morrer que, por sua insistente repetição, marcam a singularidade do sujeito, apontando para a imagem de um corpo caído, sem vida. Mantém-se uma aposta em relação a Instituições de atendimento a esses usuários: a de escutá-los em suas singularidades em busca de saídas para a adicção, o que poderá lhes indicar um meio de se afastarem da pedra ou de outros elementos que podem bloquear seu caminho, permitindo-lhes dar continuidade a sua caminhada.

As Tecnologias Digitais de Informação e Comunicação (TDICs) têm transformado as práticas educacionais, oferecendo novas oportunidades para o ensino e a aprendizagem. Este estudo analisa os desafios e as aprendizagens na integração das TDICs no ensino de Geografia, com foco em uma escola pública em Garanhuns-PE. A pesquisa, fundamentada na fenomenologia, investiga as percepções de residentes e alunos sobre a aplicação das TDICs. Os resultados revelam que a falta de infraestrutura adequada, como acesso à internet e recursos digitais, representa um obstáculo significativo para a implementação das TDICs. Contudo, diversas estratégias foram adotadas para contornar essas limitações e promover a participação ativa dos alunos. A pesquisa também destaca a importância da formação continuada dos professores para garantir uma integração efetiva das TDICs, enfatizando a necessidade de habilidades e conhecimentos específicos para utilizar as tecnologias de forma crítica e significativa. Conclui-se que a integração das TDICs no ensino de Geografia requer não apenas a disponibilidade de recursos tecnológicos, mas também uma abordagem pedagógica inovadora e adaptativa, capaz de transformar os desafios em oportunidades de aprendizagem.

Objective: to reveal the experiences of patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: this is a qualitative study conducted with 18 patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment, from the perspective of the Chronic Conditions Care Model. Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews, the content was recorded and processed using the Interface de R pour les Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionnaires software. Results: six classes emerged from the statements which addressed the following: challenges in building a new life routine; the fear of self-contagion and the family; mental suffering due to clinical vulnerability in facing the pandemic scenario; strategies for preventing COVID-19; the impacts of the immunization process against COVID-19; and the negative aspects of the experience of hemodialysis treatment during the pandemic. Conclusion: the experiences were permeated by challenges, especially in aspects related to mental health. Contributions to practice: this study provides an opportunity for applying targeted actions with a view to proposing contributions for planning nursing care aimed at patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment in possible future pandemic periods.

Este estudo propõe um ensaio pedagógico para o Ensino Religioso no Fundamental I, enfocando as pinturas corporais indígenas, especialmente o grafismo da etnia Potiguara, numa perspectiva decolonial. Ele busca atender às diretrizes da Proposta Curricular do Estado da Paraíba (2018), destacando a importância de explorar a cultura local. Discute a legislação pertinente, como a Lei 10.639/2003 e 11.645/2008, em relação ao Ensino Religioso, e aborda a subalternização dos saberes tradicionais como parte de um projeto colonial. O desenvolvimento metodológico é baseado em filtros básicos, qualitativos e exploratórios, com procedimento bibliográfico. O ensaio visa promover a compreensão do grafismo Potiguara como expressão linguística que transcende estereótipos, comunicando identidade e espiritualidade, e resistindo ao controle educacional colonial. Suas contribuições incluem ampliar e aprofundar o debate social necessário para diminuir violências simbólicas nas categorias não hegemônicas da cultura brasileira, especialmente a cosmovisão dos povos originários.
