Amaç: Bu çalışmada Karasu Deresi’nde yaşayan Barbus cyclolepis Heckel, 1837 ve Gobio bulgaricus Drensky, 1926 türlerinin bazı büyüme özellikleri mevsimsel olarak incelenmiştir.Materyal ve Yöntem: Örnekleme mevsimlik olarak (Ağustos 2017, Kasım 2017, Ocak 2018, Şubat 2018, Nisan 2018) elektroşok aracılığıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. Her mevsimi temsil edecek örneklemeler arka arkaya 3 gün tekrarlanmıştır. Elde edilen B. cyclolepis ve G. bulgaricus bireylerinin boy, ağırlık, yaş, eşey dağılımları, yaş-boy, yaş-ağırlık, boy-ağırlık ilişkileri ve Fulton kondisyon faktörü değerleri incelenmiştir.Bulgular: İncelenen B. cyclolepis bireyleri 0-III yaş gruplarındadır. Standart boy değerleri 3,5-13,5 cm; ağırlık değerleri ise 1,2232-50,8213 g arasında değişmiştir. Dişi:erkek oranı 1:0,94 olarak saptanmıştır. Tüm bireylerde; boy-ağırlık ilişkisi W= 0,0253*SL2,9226 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşa göre en düşük kondisyon faktörü değeri, III yaş grubunda (1,982) dişi bireylerde, en yüksek kondisyon faktörü değeri I yaş grubunda (2,288) erkek bireylerde bulunmuştur. G. bulgaricus türünün yaş dağılımı ise I-IV yaş grupları arasında değişmektedir. Standart boy değerleri 2,5-9,6 cm; ağırlık değerleri ise 0,2989-18,3014 g arasında değişmiştir. Dişi:erkek oranı 1:1,56 olarak saptanmıştır. Tüm bireylerde; boy-ağırlık ilişkisi W= 0,0209*SL3,0081 olarak belirlenmiştir. Yaşa göre en düşük kondisyon faktörü değeri, II yaş grubunda (1,950) erkek bireylerde, en yüksek kondisyon faktörü değeri IV yaş grubunda (2,191) dişi bireylerde bulunmuştur.Sonuç: Bu çalışma sonucunda Karasu deresinde yaşayan Barbus cyclolepis ve Gobio bulgaricus türlerinin kimi büyüme özellikleri ilk defa incelenmiştir., Objective: In this study, some growth characteristics of Barbus cyclolepis Heckel, 1837 and Gobio bulgaricus Drensky, 1926 species living in Karasu Stream, were investigated.Materials and Methods: Sampling was carried out seasonal (August 2017, November 2017, January 2018, February 2018, April 2018) via electroshock. Samplings representing each season were repeated for 3 consecutive days. Lenght, weight, age, sex distributions and ratios, age-length, age-weight, length-weight relationships, Von Bertalanffy parameters, Fulton condition factor values of the obtained B. cyclolepis and G. bulgaricus individuals were analyzed.Results: The examined B.cyclolepis individuals are in the 0-III age groups. Standard length values are 3.5-13.5 cm; The weight values varied between 1.2232-50.8213 g. The female: male ratio was determined as 1: 0.94. In all individuals; Length-weight relationship was determined as W= 0.0253*SL2.9226.According to age, the lowest condition factor value was found in female individuals in the III age group (1.982), and the highestcondition factor value was found in male individuals in the I age group (2.288).The age distribution of G. bulgaricus species varies between I-IV age groups. Standard length values are 2.5-9.6 cm; The weightvalues varied between 0.2989-18.3014 g. The female: male ratio was determined as 1:1.56. In all individuals; Length-weightrelationship was determined as W= 0.0209* SL3.0081. According to age, the lowest condition factor value was found in maleindividuals in the II age group (1.950), and the highest condition factor value was found in female individuals in the IV age group(2.191).Conclusion: As a result of this study, some growth characteristics of Barbus cyclolepis and Gobio bulgaricus species living inKarasu stream were investigated for the first time.

A field-based study of the reproductive aspects of Round-scaled barbel biology took place in the Stryama River, during the autumnal season of the period 2010–2011. This is the first study of the reproduction of this species. A total of 202 Round-scaled barbels were caught by electrofishing. The study found that both sexes reach sexual maturity in their second year. Females became sexually mature, once they reach 94 mm length and 13 g weight. Males became sexually mature once they reach 60 mm length and 12 g weight. Fecundity ranged from 460 to 18.420 eggs. Average fecundity was 6.944 eggs. Absolute fertility was positively correlated with the growth of fish length and mass. Consequently, five years old fish had the highest fertility rate. The average values of relative fecundity were 210 eggs per kilo. The reproductive parameters are an indicator of the growth conditions of the river, as well as the reproductive patterns and state of the fish population. The population parameters, established by this study, now represent a reference point, enabling a monitoring of the species’ population dynamics.

The aims of the study are to determine what the organisms Barbus cyclolepis consume as food in its feeding environments and to compare prey consumption with prey abundance in the environment. The study was conducted in the Istranca Stream located in Istanbul (Turkey) during the spring and summer of 2012. A total of 142 B. cyclolepis specimens were captured and it is determined that 94 of them had full digestive tracts. Diet analyses of B. cyclolepis showed that its food spectrum consisted of 11 different food types, and the species was found to feed on insects, mainly Diptera (IRI%= 92.26%). The most abundant macroinvertebrate organisms in the environment were Diptera and Gastropoda. The electivity index of B. cyclolepis was positive for Diptera in the spring (E= 0.49), but the value was below the expected value of 0.6 for high selectivity. The electivity values for other macroinvertebrate groups, consumed in low proportions, were negative. In summer, the fish fed on Diptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera, but a high electivity index value was found only for Trichoptera (E= 0.87). Results showed that B. cyclolepis mainly consumed Diptera as food and did not consume Gastropoda, although it is the second most abundant macroinvertebrate group in the environment. A relationship was determined between the proportion of food groups consumed in the digestive tracts of fish and the ratios of macroinvertebrates in the environment, and as a result, it was specified that the fish was selective on Diptera.

This paper analysed a total of 76 fish individuals collected at four different localities in Republic of Macedonia. The following were encompassed: River Strumica, River Vardar and two natural lakes-Ohrid Lake and Prespa Lake. The samples affiliated with the four previously mentioned barbel species on the territory of Republic of Macedonia: Barbus cyclolepis Kar., Barbus prespensis Kar., Barbus macedonicus Kar. and Barbus peloponnesius Val. The molecular RAPD method was used for investigation of the population structure of the Barbus genus. A total of ten oligonucleotide primers was used to obtain various RAPD profiles in different species. The established genetic markers allow an opportunity for exact identification of the species and populations of barbel and for detection of interspecies hybrids.

In the paper 25 samples of Barbus cyclolepis group from River Strumica, (Macedonia), 18 samples from river Marica and 2 samples from reservoir Dospat, (Bulgaria), and 5 samples from River Pinios (Greece) were investigated. General muscle proteins (miogens, sarcoplasmic proteins) and six enzymes (AAT, EST, MDH, LDH, ME, SOD) were electrophoreticaly analyzed. Based on protein starch-gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing (IEF) on thin polyacrilamide ampholine gel, intraspecies difereneses among populations of Barbus cyclolepis group from investigated localities were detected.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites, other organochlorine pesticides such as hexachlorobenzene (HCB), chlordane compounds (CHLs, including trans-chlordane and cis- and trans-nonachlor) and the heavy metal mercury were quantified in muscle and liver of the European chub (Leuciscus cephalus, Linnaeus, 1758) and in the muscle of the barbel (Barbus cyclolepis, Heckel, 1837) at two sampling sites of the River Nestos, Greece. PCBs in muscle and DDTs in the liver tissues were the predominant organochlorinated contaminants. Among the PCBs, congeners 47 (up to 9.60 ng g(-1) wet wt.), 180 (up to 1.15 ng g(-1) wet wt.) and 190 (up to 1.50 ng g(-1) wet wt.) were the most frequent and abundant. The contamination degree by the sum of PCBs on the fish tissue samples from the River Nestos is lower or similar to PCB levels found in other ecosystems. Among the organochlorine pesticides, essentially only p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDE and alpha-, beta- and gamma-HCH were found, with the former appearing at mean levels up to 30.71 ng g(-1) wet wt. From a public health standpoint, residue organochlorine pesticide levels from our work are considerably lower than the recommended tolerance limits. Finally, mean values of Hg in chub were significant lower (up to 31.04 ng g(-1) wet wt.) compared to those detected on barbel (up to 169.27 ng g(-1) wet wt.). The concentrations of Hg in fresh water fish from the River Nestos did not exceed WHO and US EPA health guidelines, and were suitable for human consumption.

The freshwater fish fauna of Greece includes 106 species of which 79 are native primary species. Of these 38 species are endemic to Greece and southern parts of neighbouring countries. Endangered species are divided into three groups: wholly endangered, locally endangered and rare and threatened. In the first group are eight taxa, usually found in a very restricted area (Eudontomyzon hellenicus, Alosa caspia vistonica, Pseudophoxinus beoticus, Ladigesocypris ghigii ghigii, Barbus euboicus, Barbus cyclolepis cholorematicus, Pungitius hellenicus and Knipowitschia goerneri). The second group includes five species with a wide area of distribution but some local populations which are extinct or in obvious decline (Salmo trutta, Pseudophoxinus stymphalicus, Vimba melanops, Valencia letourneuxi, Proterorhinus marmoratus). The third group comprises nine endemic taxa, mainly with a wide distribution in Greece, or widely distributed in Europe but represented in Greece by local populations, sometimes recognized as subspecies (Phoxinellus pleurobipunctatus, Barbus prespensis, Gobio kessleri banarescui, Gobio uranoscopus elimeius, Carassius carassius, Orthrias barbatulus vardarensis, Pungitius platygaster, Knipowitschia thessala, Economidichthys pygmaeus). These taxa often have rare or threatened local populations. The main reasons for the decline of fish species are: agricultural and industrial activity, overfishing, partial or total destruction of many karstic springs, public and private works abstracting water, drainage, irrigation, tourist and industrial installations, dams, mixing of fish faunas of different origin and introduction of exotic species.

The Balkan Peninsula, or Balkans, is the historic and geographic name of southeastern Europe. The Balkans lay south of the rivers Save, Drava, and Danube and is surrounded by the Adriatic and Ionian Seas in the west, the Mediterranean Sea in the south and the Aegean, Marmara, and Black Seas in the east. This chapter focuses on 15 rivers that encompass the biogeographical diversity of the Balkan Peninsula: The Neretva, the Drin, the Aoos, the Kamchia, the Evros, the Nestos, the Strymon basin, the Axios, the Aliakmon, the Pinios, the Sperchios basin, the Arachthos, the Acheloos, the Alfeios, and the Evrotas. It also presents a general characterization of the rivers of the Balkans. An important geological feature of the Balkans, with strong biogeographic implications, is the high proportion of karstic subterranean rivers, especially in the western part. They contain remarkable subterranean communities. This area is a hot spot of hypogean biodiversity with unique life forms, such as the Olm Proteus anguinusin in the Neretva. The Aggitis River tributary at the Strymon emerges from a vast system of underground caverns that provides habitat for the Thracian barbel Barbus cyclolepis and the Stone crayfish Austropotamobium torrentium . A definitive biogeographic characterization of the Balkans remains difficult because underlying biogeographic patterns are interrupted by several idiosyncrasies and inherent river basin attributes (numerous lakes, peninsular effects).
