A thermoluminescence dosimetry (TLD) system was characterised at SSDL-ININ to verify the air-kerma strength (SK) and dose-to-water (DW) values for 137Cs sources used in low dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy treatments at the Hospital General de Mexico (HGM). It consists of a Harshaw 3500 reader and a set of TLD-100 powder capsules. The samples of TLD-100 powder were calibrated in terms of DW vs. nC or nC mg-1, and their dose response curves were corrected for supralinearity. The DW was calculated using the AAPM TG-43 formalism using SK for a CDCSM4 137Cs reference source. The SK value was obtained by using a NE 2611 chamber, and with two well chambers. The angular anisotropy factor was measured with the NE 2611 chamber for this source. The HGM irradiated TLD-100 powder capsules to a reference dose DW of 2 Gy with their 137Cs sources. The percent deviations between the imparted and reference doses were 1.2% ≤ Δ ≤6.5%, which are consistent with the combined uncertainties: 5.6% ≤ uc ≤9.8% for DW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We systematically reviewed the literature to assess the association between use of alcohol protective behavioral strategies (PBS) and young adult heavy drinking and alcohol-related consequences., Method: We followed the preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis guidelines to select and review research studies that were comprised of a sample of young adults ages 18-26, included PBS derived from one of 10 validated scales as an independent variable, measured heavy alcohol use or alcohol consequences as the dependent variable, and tested the direct association between the two. Studies were gathered via PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, APA PsycInfo, and Global Health. All identified study records underwent a two-step screening process and risk of bias assessment., Results: Data were extracted from 94 studies that met inclusion criteria; 16 studies (17%) examined associations with heavy alcohol use and 91 studies (97%) tested effects of PBS on alcohol consequences. All studies that measured a total effect of PBS use (summations across all strategies) found significant negative associations with heavy alcohol use and 91% were negatively associated with alcohol consequences. Most studies that examined subscales of PBS found at least one significant, negative relation with heavy alcohol use (73%) and alcohol-related consequences (78%), though effects varied across type of subscale (e.g., manner of drinking)., Conclusions: Our results support the use of PBS to address heavy alcohol consumption and related harms among young adults. Highly reactive thermosets are currently expanding the processability of high-performance structures for transportation industry. The short polymerization time makes it a suitable process to replace metallic structures with polymer matrix-based composite materials. The resin characterization is a fundamental step to obtain the properties and the associated constitutive models, which are required to design and optimize the manufacturing process parameters of composite materials. However, the short time on polymerization requires to use the characterization equipment at their performance capability limits. This work presents a comprehensive methodology to characterize the thermo-chemical properties of highly reactive resin systems, which are relevant for resin impregnation into the preform for liquid injection processes. Four different commercial resin systems are analyzed in this study. Experimental methodologies are analyzed and adapted for best data acquisition at high temperature isothermals. Based on the experimental data, Cure kinetics and viscosity equation-based models are used to describe the behaviour of these complex resin systems. With the advancements in therapeutics and available treatment options, almost all deaths and permanent disabilities from snakebite envenoming (SBE) are preventable. The challenge lies in implementing these evidence-based treatments and practices across different settings and populations. This study aims to compare data on provider perceptions of SBE care across health systems and cultural contexts to inform potential implementation science approaches. We hypothesize different health systems and cultural contexts will influence specific perceived needs to provide adequate snakebite care within central tenets of care delivery (e.g., cost, access, human resources). We previously conducted exploratory descriptive studies in the US and Brazil in order to understand the experience, knowledge, and perceptions of health professionals treating SBE. In the US, in-depth interviews were performed with emergency physicians from January 2020 to March 2020. In BR, focus group discussions were conducted with health professionals from community health centers at the end of June 2021. The focus group discussions (BR) were originally analyzed through an inductive thematic analysis approach. We conducted a secondary qualitative analysis in which this codebook was then applied to the interviews (US) in a deductive content analysis. The analysis concluded in August 2022. Brazil participants were physicians (n=5) or nurses (n=20) from three municipalities in the State of Amazonas with an average of three years of professional experience. US participants were emergency physicians (n=16) with an average of 15 years of professional experience. Four main themes emerged: 1) barriers to adequate care on the patient and/or community side and 2) on the health system side, 3) perceived considerations for how to address SBE, and 4) identified needs for improving care. There were 25 subthemes within the four themes. These subthemes were largely the same across the Brazil and US data, but the rationale and content within each shared subtheme varied significantly. For example, the subtheme "role of health professionals in improving care" extended across Brazil and the US. Brazil emphasized the need for task-shifting and -sharing amongst health care disciplines, whereas the US suggested specialized approaches geared toward increasing access to toxicologists and other referral resources. Despite similar core barriers to adequate snakebite envenoming care and factors to consider when trying to improve care delivery, health professionals in different health systems and sociocultural contexts identified different needs. Accounting for, and understanding, these differences is crucial to the success of initiatives intended to strengthen snakebite envenoming care. Tall cell carcinoma with reversed polarity (TCCRP) of the breast is a rare entity with low potential for malignancy that exhibits some morphological similarities to the tall cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Immunohistochemical and molecular studies help establish the mammary origin of this neoplasm. Background Meningiomas are the single most common brain tumor. The incidence of these tumors increases with age; different studies have shown that meningiomas usually appear after the age of 50. These tumors are more common in women than in men, and women are twice as likely to suffer from the condition. Surgery is the primary form of treatment, which can be curative with complete resection. If the tumor is unresectable or other treatments such as surgery and radiotherapy have failed, hormonal therapy or chemotherapy may be considered. There is limited information about the clinical, demographic, and histopathological characteristics of these tumors in the population of Bogotá, Colombia. Objective To evaluate the expression of progesterone receptors in patients over 18 years old who have been diagnosed with meningiomas in a high-complexity hospital in Bogota, Colombia, and to describe the demographic and histopathological characteristics of these patients. Methods This is a descriptive and retrospective case series. Patients with meningioma who underwent surgical resection at a high-complexity hospital in Bogota, Colombia, from 2016 to 2019 were retrospectively identified and studied. Demographic variables, such as age and gender, were extracted from the clinical chart. Indirect immunoperoxidase staining was carried out for the progesterone receptor (PR) and Ki67. PR is analyzed as positive and negative, and the Ki67 proliferation index was determined. Results Thirty-two meningiomas from patients who underwent surgery were available for analysis. Twenty-five (78.1%) were positive for PR, 71.8% were females, and 93% were World Health Organization (WHO) grade I. Meningothelial (28%), fibrous (25%), and transitional (25%) meningiomas were the most frequent subtypes, correspondingly. The Ki67 mean value was 1.14 (0.11-10.71). Conclusion Our case series showed a greater frequency of meningiomas in women, with a high PR expression and a low Ki67 proliferation rate. Context: Robust methodology and ethical reporting are paramount for quality scientific research, but recently, that quality in addiction research has been questioned. Avenues to improve such research quality include adherence to reporting guidelines and proper usage of clinical trial registries. Reporting guidelines and clinical trial registries have been shown to lead researchers to more ethical and transparent methodology., Objectives: To investigate the reporting guideline and clinical trial registration policies of addiction research journals and identify areas of improvement., Methods: We used Google Scholar Metrics' h-5 index to identify the top 20 addiction research journals. We then examined the instructions for authors from each journal to identify whether they required, recommended, or made no mention of trial registration and reporting guidelines, including the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT), Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE), Quality of Reporting of Meta-analyses (QUOROM), Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), Standards for Reporting Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (STARD), Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE), Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments (ARRIVE), Case Reports (CARE), Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS), Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR), Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence (SQUIRE), Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials (SPIRIT), Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ), Transparent Reporting of a Multivariate Prediction Model for Individual Prognosis or Diagnosis (TRIPOD), Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P), and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines. We performed the same analysis regarding requirements for clinical trial registration., Results: Of the 20 journals included in this study, 10 journals (50%) did not require adherence to any reporting guidelines. Trial registration followed a similar trend; 15 journals (75%) did not mention any form of trial or systematic review registration, and ClinicalTrials.gov was only recommended by only 1 journal (5%)., Conclusions: Among top addiction medicine journals, required adherence to reporting guidelines and clinical trial registry policies remains substandard. A step toward fulfilling the National Institute on Drug Abuses' call for improvement in transparency and reproducibility within addiction research should include all journals adopting a strict reporting guideline and clinical trial registry adherence policy.
