1. Fast Object Detection with a Machine Learning Edge Device

Abstract: This machine learning study investigates a lowcost edge device integrated with an embedded system having computer vision and resulting in an improved performance in inferencing time and precision of object detection and classification. A primary aim of this study focused on reducing inferencing time and low-power consumption and to enable an embedded device of a competition-ready autonomous humanoid robot and to support real-time object recognition, scene understanding, visual navigation, motion planning, and autonomous navigation of the robot. This study compares processors for inferencing time performance between a central processing unit (CPU), a graphical processing unit (GPU), and a tensor processing unit (TPU). CPUs, GPUs, and TPUs are all processors that can be used for machine learning tasks. Related to the aim of supporting an autonomous humanoid robot, there was an additional effort to observe whether or not there was a significant difference in using a camera having monocular vision versus stereo vision capability. TPU inference time results for this study reflect a 25% reduction in time over the GPU, and a whopping 87.5% reduction in inference time compared to the CPU. Much information in this paper is contributed to the final selection of Google's Coral brand, Edge TPU device. The Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense Tiny ML Kit was also considered for comparison but due to initial incompatibilities and in the interest of time to complete this study, a decision was made to review the kit in a future experiment.

2. Derivation of a generalized quasi-geostrophic approximation for inviscid flows in a channel domain: The fast waves correction

Abstract: This paper is devoted to investigating the rotating Boussinesq equations of inviscid, incompressible flows with both fast Rossby waves and fast internal gravity waves. The main objective is to establish a rigorous derivation and justification of a new generalized quasi-geostrophic approximation in a channel domain with no normal flow at the upper and lower solid boundaries, taking into account the resonance terms due to the fast and slow waves interactions. Under these circumstances, We are able to obtain uniform estimates and compactness without the requirement of either well-prepared initial data (as in [10]) or domain with no boundary (as in [17]). In particular, the nonlinear resonances and the new limit system, which takes into account the fast waves correction to the slow waves dynamics, are also identified without introducing Fourier series expansion. The key ingredient includes the introduction of (full) generalized potential vorticity.

3. H\'older regularity of the pressure for weak solutions of the 3D Euler equations in bounded domains

Abstract: We consider the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations on a bounded domain $\Omega$ with $C^4$ boundary. We prove that if the velocity field $u \in C^{0,\alpha} (\Omega)$ with $\alpha > 0$ (where we are omitting the time dependence), it follows that the corresponding pressure $p$ of a weak solution to the Euler equations belongs to the H\"older space $C^{0, \alpha} (\Omega)$. We also prove that away from the boundary $p$ has $C^{0,2\alpha}$ regularity. In order to prove these results we use a local parametrisation of the boundary and a very weak formulation of the boundary condition for the pressure of the weak solution, as was introduced in [C. Bardos and E.S. Titi, Philos. Trans. Royal Soc. A, 380 (2022), 20210073], which is different than the commonly used boundary condition for classical solutions of the Euler equations. Moreover, we provide an explicit example illustrating the necessity of this new very weak formulation of the boundary condition for the pressure. Furthermore, we also provide a rigorous derivation of this new formulation of the boundary condition for weak solutions of the Euler equations. This result is of importance for the proof of the first half of the Onsager Conjecture, the sufficient conditions for energy conservation of weak solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in bounded domains. Abstract: Multi-target regression is useful in a plethora of applications. Although random forest models perform well in these tasks, they are often difficult to interpret. Interpretability is crucial in machine learning, especially when it can directly impact human well-being. Although model-agnostic techniques exist for multi-target regression, specific techniques tailored to random forest models are not available. To address this issue, we propose a technique that provides rule-based interpretations for instances made by a random forest model for multi-target regression, influenced by a recent model-specific technique for random forest interpretability. 6. Local Explanation of Dimensionality Reduction

Abstract: Dimensionality reduction (DR) is a popular method for preparing and analyzing high-dimensional data. Reduced data representations are less computationally intensive and easier to manage and visualize, while retaining a significant percentage of their original information. Aside from these advantages, these reduced representations can be difficult or impossible to interpret in most circumstances, especially when the DR approach does not provide further information about which features of the original space led to their construction. This problem is addressed by Interpretable Machine Learning, a subfield of Explainable Artificial Intelligence that addresses the opacity of machine learning models. However, current research on Interpretable Machine Learning has been focused on supervised tasks, leaving unsupervised tasks like Dimensionality Reduction unexplored. In this paper, we introduce LXDR, a technique capable of providing local interpretations of the output of DR techniques. 9. Diffusion limit of the Vlasov equation in the weak turbulent regime

Abstract: In this paper we study the Hamiltonian dynamics of charged particles subject to a non-self-consistent stochastic electric field, when the plasma is in the so-called weak turbulent regime. We show that the asymptotic limit of the Vlasov equation is a diffusion equation in the velocity space, but homogeneous in the physical space. We obtain a diffusion matrix, quadratic with respect to the electric field, which can be related to the diffusion matrix of the resonance broadening theory and of the quasilinear theory, depending on whether the typical autocorrelation time of particles is finite or not. In the self-consistent deterministic case, we show that the asymptotic distribution function is homogenized in the space variables, while the electric field converges weakly to zero. We also show that the lack of compactness in time for the electric field is necessary to obtain a genuine diffusion limit. By contrast, the time compactness property leads to a "cheap" version of the Landau damping: the electric field converges strongly to zero, implying the vanishing of the diffusion matrix, while the distribution function relaxes, in a weak topology, towards a spatially homogeneous stationary solution of the Vlasov-Poisson system.

Abstract: The purpose of this note is to give a complete proof of a $C^{0,\alpha}$ regularity result for the pressure for weak solutions of the two-dimensional "incompressible Euler equations" when the fluid velocity enjoys the same type of regularity in a compact simply connected domain with $C^2$ boundary. To accomplish our result we realize that it is compulsory to introduce a new weak formulation for the boundary condition of the pressure which is consistent with, and equivalent to, that of classical solutions.

Abstract: ObjectiveTwo phase 3 galcanezumab trials were conducted in Europe and North America to analyze the reduction of weekly cluster headache (CH) attack frequency in populations with episodic and chronic CH. The current study aims to illustrate prospectively recorded baseline clinical data from these trials and to identify possible predictors of response.MethodsPatients (aged 18–65 years) met The International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition-beta criteria for CH. Attacks were evaluated using an electronic headache diary for 7-day (episodic) or 14-day (chronic) eligibility assessments before patients were randomized 1:1 to monthly subcutaneous galcanezumab 300 mg or placebo.ResultsData were collected from 106 patients with episodic and 237 with chronic CH. Overall, the mean age [standard deviation] was 45.4 [11.0] years; patients were predominantly White (84.5%), male (75.8%), and European (77.6%). Patients with episodic CH reported 17.5 [10.0] attacks/week; patients with chronic CH reported 18.8 [10.2] attacks/week. The average pain severity score (range 0–4) was 2.5 [0.7] for episodic CH and 2.7 [0.7] for chronic CH. Higher attack frequency was a possible predictor of response to galcanezumab; potential negative predictors of response were greater attack severity and duration.ConclusionThis large dataset of patients with CH provides reliable systematically and prospectively collected information on disease characteristics. 13. Onsager type conjecture and renormalized solutions for the relativistic Vlasov Maxwell system

Abstract: In this paper we give a proof of an Onsager type conjecture on conservation of energy and entropies of weak solutions to the relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations. As concerns the regularity of weak solutions, say in Sobolev spaces $W^{\alpha,p}$, we determine Onsager type exponents $\alpha$ that guarantee the conservation of all entropies. In particular, the Onsager exponent $\alpha$ is smaller than $\alpha = 1/3$ established for fluid models. Entropies conservation is equivalent to the renormalization property, which have been introduced by DiPerna--Lions for studying well-posedness of passive transport equations and collisionless kinetic equations. For smooth solutions renormalization property or entropies conservation are simply the consequence of the chain rule. For weak solutions the use of the chain rule is not always justified. Then arises the question about the minimal regularity needed for weak solutions to guarantee such properties. In the DiPerna--Lions and Bouchut--Ambrosio theories, renormalization property holds under sufficient conditions in terms of the regularity of the advection field, which are roughly speaking an entire derivative in some Lebesgue spaces (DiPerna--Lions) or an entire derivative in the space of measures with finite total variation (Bouchut--Ambrosio). In return there is no smoothness requirement for the advected density, except some natural a priori bounds. Here we show that the renormalization property holds for an electromagnetic field with only a fractional space derivative in some Lebesgue spaces. To compensate this loss of derivative for the electromagnetic field, the distribution function requires an additional smoothness, typically fractional Sobolev differentiability in phase-space. As concerns the conservation of total energy, if the macroscopic kinetic energy is in $L^2$, then total energy is preserved.

Since early 2016, the Sustainable Remediation Forum (SURF) has led research and organized knowledge exchanges to examine (1) the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events on hazardous waste sites, and (2) how we can mitigate these impacts and create value for communities. The SURF team found that climate change and extreme weather events can undermine the effectiveness of the approved site remediation, and can also affect contaminant toxicity, exposure, organism sensitivity, fate and transport, long-term operations, management, and stewardship of remediation sites. Further, failure to consider social vulnerability to climate change could compromise remediation and adaptation strategies. SURF's recommendations for resilient remediation build on resources and drivers from state, national, and international sources, and marry the practices of sustainable remediation and climate change adaptation. They outline both general principles and site-specific protocols and provide global examples of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Opportunities for synergy include vulnerability assessments that benefit and build on established hazardous waste management law, policy, and practices. SURF's recommendations can guide owners and project managers in developing a site resiliency strategy. Resilient remediation can help expedite cleanup and redevelopment, decrease public health risks, and create jobs, parks, wetlands, and resilient energy sources. Resilient remediation and redevelopment can also positively contribute to achieving international goals for sustainable land management, climate action, clean energy, and sustainable cities.

Abstract: We study the unique continuation property for the neutron transport equation and for a simplified model of the Fokker-Planck equation in a bounded domain with absorbing boundary condition. An observation estimate is derived. It depends on the smallness of the mean free path and the frequency of the velocity average of the initial data. The proof relies on the well known diffusion approximation under convenience scaling and on basic properties of this diffusion. Eventually we propose a direct proof for the observation at one time of parabolic equations. It is based on the analysis of the heat kernel.

Abstract: This article is on the simultaneous diffusion approximation and homogenization of the linear Boltzmann equation when both the mean free path $\varepsilon$ and the heterogeneity length scale $\eta$ vanish. No periodicity assumption is made on the scattering coefficient of the background material. There is an assumption made on the heterogeneity length scale $\eta$ that it scales as $\varepsilon^\beta$ for $\beta\in(0,\infty)$. In one space dimension, we prove that the solutions to the kinetic model converge to the solutions of an effective diffusion equation for any $\beta\le2$ in the $\varepsilon\to0$ limit. In any arbitrary phase space dimension, under a smallness assumption of a certain quotient involving the scattering coefficient in the $H^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ norm, we again prove that the solutions to the kinetic model converge to the solutions of an effective diffusion equation in the $\varepsilon\to0$ limit., Comment: 18 pages

This post hoc analysis assessed the impact of galcanezumab on the total pain burden of episodic cluster headache using a composite measure.Patients and Methods: Patients with episodic cluster headache were randomized 1:1 to galcanezumab 300 mg or placebo once monthly for 8 weeks. Mean weekly total pain burden was calculated (daily cluster headache attack frequency × average duration × average pain severity summed over 7 days) using data collected in an electronic patient-reported outcomes diary. Change from baseline in weekly total pain burden across weeks 1– 3 was compared between galcanezumab and placebo. To explore construct validity, mean weekly total pain burden scores were stratified by Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) responses at the week 4 clinic visit.Results: The reduction from baseline in mean weekly total pain burden was significantly greater with galcanezumab (N=49) than with placebo (N=57): the least squares mean difference was − 11.18 severity-weighted hours (p=0.035). Median weekly total pain burden decreased as PGI-I ratings improved, from 33.6 to 5.0 severity-weighted hours for patients who felt “very much worse” and “very much better,” respectively.Conclusion: Galcanezumab significantly reduced mean weekly total pain burden compared with placebo in patients with episodic cluster headache. The composite pain measure demonstrated construct validity. Abstract: Summary: Background: Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide. Methods: A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study—a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital. Findings: Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist. Abstract: We consider a heat problem with discontinuous diffusion coefficientsand discontinuous transmission boundary conditions with a resistancecoefficient. For all compact $(\epsilon,\delta)$-domains $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with a $d$-set boundary (for instance, aself-similar fractal), we find the first term of the small-timeasymptotic expansion of the heat content in the complement of$\Omega$, and also the second-order term in the case of a regularboundary. Abstract: The autologistic model and related auto-models, commonly applied as autocovariate regression, offer distinct advantages for analysing spatially autocorrelated ecological data. However, comparative studies by Carl and K\"uhn (Ecol. Model., 2007, 207, 159), Dormann (Ecol. Model., 2007, 207, 234), Dormann et al. (Ecography, 2007, 30, 609) and Beale et al. (Ecol. Lett., 2010, 13, 246) concluded that autocovariate regression yields anomalous covariate parameter estimates. The last three studies were based on erroneous numerical evidence, due to violation of conditions (Besag, J. R. Stat. Soc., Ser. B, 1974, 36, 192) for auto-model validity. Here we show that after correcting these technical errors, a more fundamental conceptual error remains: the comparative studies are founded on a mathematically incorrect notion of bias, involving direct comparison of parameter estimates across models differing in mathematical structure. We develop a set of simulation-based measures of covariate influence that are directly comparable across models and apply them to examples from the abovementioned studies. We find that in these cases, the effect of auto-model parameters is similar to (and consistent with) corresponding linear model effects, due to a phenomenon within auto-models that we refer to as "covariate amplification". Thus, simple comparison of parameter magnitudes between structurally different models can be highly misleading. We demonstrate that the recent critique of auto-models is entirely unfounded. Abstract: Auto-logistic and related auto-models, implemented approximately as autocovariate regression, provide simple and direct modelling of spatial dependence. The autologistic model has been widely applied in ecology since Augustin, Mugglestone and Buckland (J. Appl. Ecol., 1996, 33, 339) analysed red deer census data using a hybrid estimation approach, combining maximum pseudo-likelihood estimation with Gibbs sampling of missing data. However Dormann (Ecol. Model., 2007, 207, 234) questioned the validity of auto-logistic regression, giving examples of apparent underestimation of covariate parameters in analysis of simulated "snouter" data. Dormann et al. (Ecography, 2007, 30, 609) extended this analysis to auto-Poisson and auto-normal models, reporting similar anomalies. All the above studies employ neighbourhood weighting schemes inconsistent with conditions (Besag, J. R. Stat. Soc., Ser. B, 1974, 36, 192) required for auto-model validity; furthermore the auto-Poisson analysis fails to exclude cooperative interactions. We show that all "snouter" anomalies are resolved by correct auto-model implementation. Re-analysis of the red deer data shows that invalid neighbourhood weightings generate only small estimation errors for the full dataset, but larger errors occur on geographic subsamples. A substantial fraction of papers applying auto-logistic regression to ecological data use these invalid weightings, which are default options in the widely used "spdep" spatial dependence package for R. Auto-logistic analyses using invalid neighbourhood weightings will be erroneous to an extent that can vary widely. These analyses can easily be corrected by using valid neighbourhood weightings available in "spdep". The hybrid estimation approach for missing data is readily adapted for valid neighbourhood weighting schemes and is implemented here in R for application to sparse presence-absence data., Comment: Typos corrected in Table 1. Abstract: The high-order accuracy of Fourier method makes it the method of choice in many large scale simulations. We discuss here the stability of Fourier method for nonlinear evolution problems, focusing on the two prototypical cases of the inviscid Burgers' equation and the multi-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. The Fourier method for such problems with quadratic nonlinearities comes in two main flavors. One is the spectral Fourier method. The other is the 2/3 pseudo-spectral Fourier method, where one removes the highest 1/3 portion of the spectrum; this is often the method of choice to maintain the balance of quadratic energy and avoid aliasing errors. Two main themes are discussed in this paper. First, we prove that as long as the underlying exact solution has a minimal C^{1+\alpha} spatial regularity, then both the spectral and the 2/3 pseudo-spectral Fourier methods are stable. Consequently, we prove their spectral convergence for smooth solutions of the inviscid Burgers equation and the incompressible Euler equations. On the other hand, we prove that after a critical time at which the underlying solution lacks sufficient smoothness, then both the spectral and the 2/3 pseudo-spectral Fourier methods exhibit nonlinear instabilities which are realized through spurious oscillations. In particular, after shock formation in inviscid Burgers' equation, the total variation of bounded (pseudo-) spectral Fourier solutions must increase with the number of increasing modes and we stipulate the analogous situation occurs with the 3D incompressible Euler equations: the limiting Fourier solution is shown to enforce L^2-energy conservation, and the contrast with energy dissipating Onsager solutions is reflected through spurious oscillations.

Abstract: In this article we consider weak solutions of the three-dimensional incompressible fluid flow equations with initial data admitting a one-dimensional symmetry group. We examine both the viscous and inviscid cases. For the case of viscous flows, we prove that Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations preserve initially imposed symmetry and that such symmetric flows are stable under general three-dimensional perturbations, globally in time. We work in three different contexts: two-and-a-half-dimensional, helical and axi-symmetric flows. In the inviscid case, we observe that, as a consequence of recent work by De Lellis and Sz\'ekelyhidi, there are genuinely three-dimensional weak solutions of the Euler equations with two-dimensional initial data. We also present two partial results where restrictions on the set of initial data, and on the set of admissible solutions rule out spontaneous symmetry breaking; one is due to P.-L. Abstract: The convergence of solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations set in a domain with boundary to solutions of the Euler equations in the large Reynolds number limit is a challenging open problem both in 2 and 3 space dimensions. In particular it is distinct from the question of existence in the large of a smooth solution of the initial-boundary value problem for the Euler equations. The present paper proposes three results in that direction. First, if the solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfy a slip boundary condition with vanishing slip coefficient in the large Reynolds number limit, we show by an energy method that they converge to the classical solution of the Euler equations on its time interval of existence. Next we show that the incompressible Navier-Stokes limit of the Boltzmann equation with Maxwell's accommodation condition at the boundary is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary condition, and we express the slip coefficient at the fluid level in terms of the accommodation parameter at the kinetic level. This second result is formal, in the style of [Bardos-Golse-Levermore, J. Stat. Phys. 63 (1991), 323-344]. Finally, we establish the incompressible Euler limit of the Boltzmann equation set in a domain with boundary with Maxwell's accommodation condition assuming that the accommodation parameter is small enough in terms of the Knudsen number. Abstract: We present here a survey of recent results concerning the mathematical analysis of instabilities of the interface between two incompressible, non viscous, fluids of constant density and vorticity concentrated on the interface. This configuration includes the so-called Kelvin-Helmholtz (the two densities are equal), Rayleigh-Taylor (two different, nonzero, densities) and the water waves (one of the densities is zero) problems. After a brief review of results concerning strong and weak solutions of the Euler equation, we derive interface equations (such as the Birkhoff-Rott equation) that describe the motion of the interface. A linear analysis allows us to exhibit the main features of these equations (such as ellipticity properties); the consequences for the full, non linear, equations are then described. In particular, the solutions of the Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor problems are necessarily analytic if they are above a certain threshold of regularity (a consequence is the illposedness of the initial value problem in a non analytic framework). We also say a few words on the phenomena that may occur below this regularity threshold. Finally, special attention is given to the water waves problem, which is much more stable than the Kelvin-Helmholtz and Rayleigh-Taylor configurations. 48. Relationships between Written Expression Achievement and the Cognitive Assessment System.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) and writing achievement in junior high students (aged 11-15 years) with and without written expression disabilities. Ninety-six students with (n=48) and without (n=48) written expression disabilities were administered the Das-Naglieri: Cognitive Assessment System and the writing subtests of the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT). Pearson correlation coefficients were computed to explore the relationship between the two measures. Significant relationships were found between the Planning and Attention composites of the CAS and the WIAT writing scales for the students with writing disabilities. In contrast, Simultaneous and Successive composites of the CAS were significantly related to writing achievement for the students without writing disabilities. (Contains 26 references and 3 tables.) 49. Loss of smoothness and energy conserving rough weak solutions for the 3d Euler equations

Abstract: A basic example of shear flow was introduced by DiPerna and Majda to study the weak limit of oscillatory solutions of the Euler equations of incompressible ideal fluids. In particular, they proved by means of this example that weak limit of solutions of Euler equations may, in some cases, fail to be a solution of Euler equations. We use this shear flow example to provide non-generic, yet nontrivial, examples concerning the loss of smoothness of solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations, for initial data that do not belong to $C^{1,\alpha}$. Moreover, we show by means of this shear flow example the existence of weak solutions for the three-dimensional Euler equations with vorticity that is having a nontrivial density concentrated on non-smooth surface. This is very different from what has been proven for the two-dimensional Kelvin-Helmholtz problem where a minimal regularity implies the real analyticity of the interface. Eventually, we use this shear flow to provide explicit examples of non-regular solutions of the three-dimensional Euler equations that conserve the energy, an issue which is related to the Onsager conjecture.

Abstract: In this paper we motivate, formulate and analyze the Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) equations for molecular systems under Coulomb interaction. They consist in approximating the N-particle Schrodinger wavefunction by a (time-dependent) linear combination of (time-dependent) Slater determinants. The equations of motion express as a system of ordinary differential equations for the expansion coefficients coupled to nonlinear Schrodinger-type equations for mono-electronic wavefunctions. The invertibility of the one-body density matrix (full-rank hypothesis) plays a crucial role in the analysis. Under the full-rank assumption a fiber bundle structure shows up and produces unitary equivalence between convenient representations of the equations. We discuss and establish existence and uniqueness of maximal solutions to the Cauchy problem in the energy space as long as the density matrix is not singular. A sufficient condition in terms of the energy of the initial data ensuring the global-in-time invertibility is provided (first result in this direction). Regularizing the density matrix breaks down energy conservation, however a global well-posedness for this system in L^2 is obtained with Strichartz estimates. Eventually solutions to this regularized system are shown to converge to the original one on the time interval when the density matrix is invertible., Comment: 48 pages, 1 figure
