Tree populations have declined substantially in West Africa in recent decades, raising concerns since trees provide numerous ecosystem goods and services. Regional information on the population status of tree species could guide more effective conservation and regeneration of natural vegetation. Here, we report results of the first regional analysis of tree population structure across the Sahel and Sudan zones, a meta-study of vegetation inventories, including 23,586 individual trees sampled across nine countries. We evaluated current status and forecast future trends of 16 species and one genus of trees of ecological and socio-economic importance. Size class distribution (SCD) reflects the population structure of an individual species and can provide early warning of composition change and population decline. SCD is analysed widely at a local scale, but analysis at a regional scale is needed to detect widespread population changes. Many native species lacked trees in the smaller size classes, implying unsustainable populations and future decline. Some species show sound regeneration at the regional scale, but high variation among sites. Eight species, including Adansonia digitata and Afzelia africana, show regional declines in regeneration and risks of future extirpations. Four of these severely lack regeneration. Protected areas show higher tree regeneration, but protected status did not assure good regeneration. Our results identify priority tree species across West Africa, indicate a more urgent need for conservation and regeneration of native tree species, and highlight the benefit of effective conservation. More widespread protection could increase tree populations, conserving biodiversity, and ecosystem services essential for people's livelihoods.

Abstract The continuous emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern has rendered many therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) ineffective. To date, there are no clinically authorized therapeutic antibodies effective against the recently circulating Omicron sub-lineages BA.2.86 and JN.1. Here, we report the isolation of broad and potent neutralizing human mAbs (HuMabs) from a healthcare worker infected with SARS-CoV-2 early in the pandemic. These include a genetically unique HuMab, named K501SP6, which can neutralize different Omicron sub-lineages, including BQ.1, XBB.1, BA.2.86 and JN.1, by targeting a highly conserved epitope on the N terminal domain, as well as an RBD-specific HuMab (K501SP3) with high potency towards earlier circulating variants that was escaped by the more recent Omicron sub-lineages through spike F486 and E484 substitutions. Characterizing SARS-CoV-2 spike-specific HuMabs, including broadly reactive non-RBD-specific HuMabs, can give insight into the immune mechanisms involved in neutralization and immune evasion, which can be a valuable addition to already existing SARS-CoV-2 therapies.

Background: Over recent years, more anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures in badminton players have occurred. Little is known about the injury mechanism in badminton. The hypothesis is that most ACL injuries occur with single leg landings on the non-dominant leg in the backhand side or with lunge movements in the forehand side on the dominant leg. To inform prevention strategies the aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of ACL injuries in badminton, specifically if ACL injuries occur in certain positions on the badminton court and/or with certain movements. Secondary aims were to investigate differences among gender, age groups and between recreational and tournament players. Methods: The study, ACL Denmark, investigate ACL ruptures in a cohort of 90.610 participants diagnosed between 2000 and 2018. Of those, 539 participants reported ACL rupture during badminton and filled in an online questionnaire in December 2021–January 2022 on the injury mechanism and other injury characteristics. Data is presented as numbers, percentage, means (SD) and median (IQR) with chi square test or Fischers exact test for dichotomous outcomes. Results: Most participants played badminton (n = 435, 81 %) as primary sport and 155 (29 %) reported to play on a competitive level (Tegner score 8). The rear court (n = 285, 40 %) was the most frequent location of injury but with a high percentage on the front and midcourt (n = 154, 22 %). Background: A clavicle fracture often changes the mechanical axes of the shoulder girdle due to displacement and shortening, potentially leading to scapular protraction and decreased subacromial space. If protraction of the scapula is a major risk factor for developing subacromial pain syndrome (SAPS), a previous clavicle fracture could increase the risk of later SAPS. The purpose of this study was to investigate if a previous clavicle fracture correlates with a higher occurrence or earlier diagnosis of SAPS. Methods: In this retrospective case-control study with data from the Danish National Patient Register, all persons aged 18-60 years, with any hospital contact due to a clavicle fracture (DS420) between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2005, were identified as cases. For each case, five controls, matched on age and sex, were identified. Primary outcome was the first hospital contact with a SAPS diagnosis (DM751-755) registered more than 180 days following the fracture. Follow-up was until November 01, 2021. Results: 21.973 cases and 109.865 controls were included. The incidence of clavicle fractures was 76 fractures per 100.000 persons per year. Twenty-three percent were female. 1.640 (7.46%) cases and 8.072 (7.35%) controls received a SAPS diagnosis within the following 15-25 years, demonstrating no significant difference in the occurrence of SAPS (P = .56). The mean time from fracture to SAPS diagnosis was shorter for cases compared to controls (4040 vs. 4442 days, P < .001), and cases were slightly younger when receiving the diagnosis (51.3 vs. 53.6 years, P < .001). 1614 cases underwent surgical fixation. This subgroup had a statistically significant higher occurrence of later SAPS diagnosis (205 cases, 13%, P < .001). Conclusions: Persons with a previous clavicle fracture did not have an increased occurrence of receiving a SAPS diagnosis compared to matched controls. However, the diagnosis was given 1-2 years earlier for people with a previous fracture. Based on these findings, no strong argument for protraction of the scapula as a major risk factor for the development of SAPS was found.

Abstract Purpose To investigate the level of cellular senescence in stem cells derived from microfragmented abdominal adipose tissue harvested from patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods Stem cells harvested from microfragmented abdominal adipose tissue from 20 patients with knee OA, aged 29–65 years (mean = 49.8, SD = 9.58), were analysed as a function of patient age and compared with control cells exhibiting signs of cellular senescence. Steady‐state mRNA levels of a panel of genes associated with senescence were measured by qPCR. Intracellular senescence‐associated proteins p16 and p21, and senescence‐associated β‐galactosidase activity were measured by flow cytometry. Cellular proliferation was assessed using a 5‐ethynyl‐2′‐deoxyuridine proliferation assay. Stemness was assessed by stem cell surface markers using flow cytometry and the capacity to undergo adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation in vitro. Results No correlation was found between cellular senescence levels of the microfragmented adipose tissue‐derived stem cells and patient age for any of the standard assays used to quantify senescence. The level of cellular senescence was generally low across all senescence‐associated assays compared to the positive senescence control. Stemness was verified for all samples. An increased capacity to undergo adipogenic differentiation was shown with increasing patient age (p = 0.02). No effect of patient age was found for osteogenic differentiation. Conclusions Autologous microfragmented adipose tissue‐derived stem cells may be used in clinical trials of knee OA of patients aged 29–65 years, at least until passage 4, as they show stemness potential and negligible senescence in vitro. After a COVID-19-induced lockdown in the spring of 2020 in Denmark, the reopening of schools involved bringing the teaching outdoors. This offered a unique opportunity to study the experiences of teachers not used to working outdoors. In light of Thomas Guskey's teacher development theory, these experiences are investigated in a qualitative in-depth study of 12 teachers. Despite starting with different attitudes towards teaching outdoors, the teachers agreed that the prevailing content outdoors had to be curricular, that the preparation had been cumbersome, and that they could teach more from their own mindset outdoors. Furthermore, all participating teachers expressed that they wanted to continue teaching outdoors more post-COVID than before. However, it is difficult to discern the significance of the outdoor teaching specifically, as there were numerous aspects of the schoolday that were changed in the reopening. The results seem promising for the provision of teaching outdoors post-COVID.

Background: Reports of glenohumeral translation in shoulders with traumatic anterior instability have been presented. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate anterior-posterior translation in shoulders with traumatic anterior instability. Methods: This systematic review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Studies including patients aged ≥15 years with previous traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation or subluxation were included. The outcome was anterior-posterior glenohumeral translation. A search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library was performed on July 17, 2022. Two reviewers individually screened titles and abstracts, reviewed full text, extracted data, and performed quality assessment. Results: Twenty studies (582 unstable shoulders in total) of varying quality were included. There was a lack of standardization and unity across studies. Radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, motion tracking, instrumentation, and manual testing were used to assess the glenohumeral translation. The glenohumeral translation in unstable shoulders ranged from 0.0 ± 0.8 mm to 11.6 ± 3.7 mm, as measured during various motion tasks, arm positions, and application of external force. The glenohumeral translation was larger or more anteriorly directed in unstable shoulders than in stable when contralateral healthy shoulders or a healthy control group were included in the studies. Several studies found that the humeral head was more anteriorly located on the glenoid in the unstable shoulders. Conclusion: This systematic review provides an overview of the current literature on glenohumeral translation in traumatic anterior shoulder instability. It was not able to identify a threshold for abnormal translation in unstable shoulders, due to the heterogeneity of data. The review supports that not only the range of translation but also the direction hereof as well as the location of the humeral head on the glenoid seem to be part of the pathophysiology. Technical development and increased attention to research methodology in recent years may provide more knowledge and clarity on this topic in the future.

Abstract The inflammatory activity in cirrhosis is often pronounced and related to episodes of decompensation. Systemic markers of inflammation may contain prognostic information, and we investigated their possible correlation with admissions and mortality among patients with newly diagnosed liver cirrhosis. We collected plasma samples from 149 patients with newly diagnosed (within the past 6 months) cirrhosis, and registered deaths and hospital admissions within 180 days. Ninety-two inflammatory markers were quantified and correlated with clinical variables, mortality, and admissions. Prediction models were calculated by logistic regression. We compared the disease courses of our cohort with a validation cohort of 86 patients with cirrhosis. Twenty of 92 markers of inflammation correlated significantly with mortality within 180 days (q-values of 0.00–0.044), whereas we found no significant correlations with liver-related admissions. The logistic regression models yielded AUROCs of 0.73 to 0.79 for mortality and 0.61 to 0.73 for liver-related admissions, based on a variety of modalities (clinical variables, inflammatory markers, clinical scores, or combinations thereof). The models performed moderately well in the validation cohort and were better able to predict mortality than liver-related admissions. In conclusion, markers of inflammation can be used to predict 180-day mortality in patients with newly diagnosed cirrhosis. Prediction models for newly diagnosed cirrhotic patients need further validation before implementation in clinical practice. Background:. Few randomized trials have evaluated the effect of postdischarge interventions for patients with liver cirrhosis. This study assessed the effects of a postdischarge intervention on readmissions and mortality in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis. Methods:. We conducted a randomized controlled trial at a specialized liver unit. Adult patients admitted with complications of liver cirrhosis were eligible for inclusion. Participants were allocated 1:1 to standard follow-up or a family-focused nurse-led postdischarge intervention between December 1, 2019, and October 31, 2021. The 6-month intervention consisted of a patient pamphlet, 3 home visits, and 3 follow-up telephone calls by a specialized liver nurse. The primary outcome was the number of readmissions due to liver cirrhosis. Results:. Of the 110 included participants, 93% had alcohol as a primary etiology. We found no significant differences in effects in the primary outcomes such as time to first readmission, number of patients readmitted, and duration of readmissions or in the secondary outcomes like health-related quality of life and 6- and 12-month mortality. A post hoc exploratory analysis showed a significant reduction in nonattendance rates in the intervention group (RR: 0.28, 95% CI: 0.13–0.54, p=0.0004) and significantly fewer participants continuing to consume alcohol in the intervention group (p=0.003). After 12 months, the total number of readmissions (RR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.59–0.96, p=0.02) and liver-related readmissions (RR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.36–0.82, p=0.003) were reduced in the intervention group. Conclusions:. A family-focused postdischarge nursing intervention had no significant effects on any of the primary or secondary outcomes. In a post hoc exploratory analysis, we found reduced 6-month nonattendance and alcohol consumption rates, as well as reduced 12-month readmission rates in the intervention group.

Abstract Background Education can create better opportunities for health, and vice versa. Using a so-called ‘add-in’ approach, school-based physical activity (PA) promotion and prevention of sedentary behaviours can increase pupils’ wellbeing and learning and, on the longer term, reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases. A PA ‘add-in’ approach involves integrating PA into teachers’ curricular obligations without being an extra burden as opposed to an ‘add-on’ approach which requires additional operational resources and include activities that do not explicitly contribute towards curricular targets making them less long-term acceptable in a school-based context. Previous studies investigating education outside the classroom (EOtC) show mutual benefits for both health and education outcomes among children and adolescents. However, the evidence is of mixed quality and questionable certainty, which calls for further investigation. The aim of this study protocol is to describe and discuss the study design and methods to investigate the efficacy and mechanisms of EOtC as a vehicle for health and education. The study investigates the intervention developed and conducted in the TEACHOUT study with updated and strengthened design and measures. Methods The efficacy of EOtC will be investigated in a cluster randomised waitlist design. Participants will be pupils in ~54 classes, grades 4-10 (ages 10-15 years) in ~30 Danish elementary schools. Fifteen schools will be randomised to the intervention: a two-day EOtC training course targeting teachers followed by the teachers implementing EOtC >5 hours weekly over the course of one school year. Pre- and post-measures of health (PA and wellbeing) and learning (school motivation and academic achievement) will be collected. Investigation of pedagogical and motivational mechanisms will be based on observations of EOtC. Discussion The updated randomised controlled design will provide firmer evidence for the efficacy and mechanisms of EOtC and provide knowledge about how mutual benefits of health and education can be obtained. Abstract Background III-V semiconductor nanowires are envisioned as being integrated in optoelectronic devices in the near future. However, the perspective of mass production of these nanowires raises concern for human safety due to their asbestos- and carbon nanotube-like properties, including their high aspect ratio shape. Indeed, III-V nanowires have similar dimensions as Mitsui-7 multi-walled carbon nanotubes, which induce lung cancer by inhalation in rats. It is therefore urgent to investigate the toxicological effects following lung exposure to III-V nanowires prior to their use in industrial production, which entails risk of human exposure. Here, female C57BL/6J mice were exposed to 2, 6, and 18 µg (0.12, 0.35 and 1.1 mg/kg bw) of gallium phosphide (III-V) nanowires (99 nm diameter, 3.7 μm length) by intratracheal instillation and the toxicity was investigated 1, 3, 28 days and 3 months after exposure. Mitsui-7 multi-walled carbon nanotubes and carbon black Printex 90 nanoparticles were used as benchmark nanomaterials. Results Gallium phosphide nanowires induced genotoxicity in bronchoalveolar lavage cells and acute inflammation with eosinophilia observable both in bronchoalveolar lavage and lung tissue (1 and 3 days post-exposure). The inflammatory response was comparable to the response following exposure to Mitsui-7 multi-walled carbon nanotubes at similar dose levels. The nanowires underwent partial dissolution in the lung resulting in thinner nanowires, with an estimated in vivo half-life of 3 months. Despite the partial dissolution, nanowires were detected in lung, liver, spleen, kidney, uterus and brain 3 months after exposure. Conclusion Pulmonary exposure to gallium phosphide nanowires caused similar toxicological effects as the multi-walled carbon nanotube Mitsui-7. Graphical Abstract

A vaccine protecting against malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is urgently needed. The blood-stage invasion complex PCRCR consists of the five malarial proteins PfPTRAMP, PfCSS, PfRipr, PfCyRPA, and PfRH5. As each subcomponent represents an essential and highly conserved antigen, PCRCR is considered a promising vaccine target. Furthermore, antibodies targeting the complex can block red blood cell invasion by the malaria parasite. However, extremely high titers of neutralizing antibodies are needed for this invasion-blocking effect, and a vaccine based on soluble PfRH5 protein has proven insufficient in inducing a protective response in a clinical trial. Here, we present the results of two approaches to increase the neutralizing antibody titers: (A) immunofocusing and (B) increasing the immunogenicity of the antigen via multivalent display on capsid virus-like particles (cVLPs). The immunofocusing strategies included vaccinating with peptides capable of binding the invasion-blocking anti-PfCyRPA monoclonal antibody CyP1.9, as well as removing non-neutralizing epitopes of PfCyRPA through truncation. Vaccination with PfCyRPA coupled to the AP205 cVLP induced nearly two-fold higher IgG responses compared to vaccinating with soluble PfCyRPA protein. Immunofocusing using a linear peptide greatly increased the neutralizing capacity of the anti-PfCyRPA antibodies. However, significantly lower total anti-PfCyRPA titers were achieved using this strategy. Our results underline the potential of a cVLP-based malaria vaccine including full-length PfCyRPA, which could be combined with other leading malaria vaccine antigens presented on cVLPs.

Introduction Traumatic shoulder dislocation is a common shoulder injury, especially among the young and active population. More than 95% of dislocations are anterior, in which the humeral head is forced beyond the anterior glenoid rim. The injury leads to increased joint laxity and recurrence rates are high. There is evidence that the shoulder biomechanics and neuromuscular control change following dislocation, but the existing literature is scarce, and it remains to be established if and how these parameters are useful in the clinical setting. The aim of this exploratory prospective cohort study is to investigate biomechanical and neuromuscular outcomes in patients with traumatic anterior shoulder instability undergoing arthroscopic Bankart repair, to test the hypothesis that examinations of these characteristics are applicable in the clinical setting to assess shoulder instability.Methods and analysis This is a prospective multicentre cohort study with repeated measures of 30 patients undergoing arthroscopic Bankart repair. With carefully selected and completely non-invasive examination methods, we will investigate biomechanical and neuromuscular outcomes in the affected shoulders once presurgically and twice post surgically at 6 and 12 months. Patients’ contralateral shoulders are investigated once to establish a preinjury level.Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by the Capital Region Ethics Committee (journal-no: H-21027799) and the Capital Region Knowledge Center for Data Reviews (journal-no: P-2021-842) before patient recruitment began. The study results will be published in international peer-reviewed journals, online and in other relevant media, presented at medical conventions and disseminated to clinicians and patients as appropriate.Trial registration number NCT05250388.

En femtedel af danske grundskoler praktiserer udeskole, der er regelmæssig undervisning udenfor skolens mure i folkeskolens almindelige fag. Centrale indsatser for udbredelse af udeskole, åben skole og bevægelse i undervisningen har bidraget til udviklingen af udeskole, men kvalificering af lærere til at varetage undervisningen har vist sig at være sporadisk. Spørgsmålet er, hvordan undervisning udenfor læreruddannelsens mure er udbredt og karakteriseret på læreruddannelsen. I sommeren 2022 modtog alle ansatte læreruddannere på professionshøjskolerne (N~814) en elektronisk survey. Resultaterne viser, at mindst hver tredje læreruddanner inddrog undervisning udenfor (svarprocent 38,2% (n=311)). Udbredelsen var størst for specialiseringsmoduler, naturfaglige og praktisk-æstetiske fag. Dette resultat er suppleret med nogle studerendes evalueringer af specialiseringsmoduler, der involverer udeskole og åben skole. Med reference til lærerstuderendes syn på forholdet mellem teori og praksis i specialiseringsmodulerne (opposition, simulation og refleksion) diskuteres udeundervisningens muligheder for at skabe broer og sammenhæng i en læreruddannelse uden specialiseringsmoduler (LU 23). Vi anbefaler, at udeundervisningen sikres i fagene.

Background and purpose: We aimed to calculate the prevalence of patellar dislocation (PD) and trochlear dysplasia (TD) in a national cohort aged 15–19 years in the Faroe Island. Patients and methods: All inhabitants in the Faroe Islands aged 15–19 years were invited to answer an online survey, including demographics and questions regarding prior PD. Participants with prior PD were invited for radiographs and MRI of both knees to be taken. Trochlear dysplasia was defined as one of the following: Dejour type A–D on radiographs, lateral trochlear inclination angle (LTI) < 11°, or trochlear depth < 3 mm on MRI. Results: 3,749 individuals were contacted, 41 were excluded, and 1,638 (44%) completed the survey. 146 reported a prior PD (the PD cohort) and 100 accepted to participate and have radiographs and MRI taken of both knees (the clinical PD cohort), 76 of whom were diagnosed with TD. The national prevalence of PD was 8.9%. The national prevalence of symptomatic TD was 6.8%. The prevalence of TD in the clinical PD cohort was 76%. TD was bilateral in 78% of TD patients, but only 27% of patients with bilateral TD had PD in both knees. Conclusion: The prevalence of PD in the Faroe Islands is found to be very high. The national prevalence of TD and the prevalence of TD in participants with prior PD is high, indicating a potential genetic influence.

Metallographic, chemical and lead isotopic analyses of copper-based artefacts recovered from the Northwest Quarter in Jerash (ancient Gerasa) in Jordan provide new information on the civic life and material culture from a key urban site in the Roman Empire's eastern provinces. The samples span the city's occupation from its flourishing under Roman rule into the Byzantine and early Islamic periods. We examined 49 copper-based artefacts were examined using reflected light microscopy and micro-X-ray fluorescence. A subset of these artefacts was analysed by electron microprobe spectroscopy for major and minor elements at higher spatial resolution, and by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for lead isotopes. Results imply that binary bronze dominated the Roman period, (leaded) brass characterised the Byzantine period, while tin-containing alloys were prevalent during the Islamic period. Lead isotopes suggest that during the Roman and Byzantine periods some of the metal in Jerash came from European and/or Mediterranean sources, while copper used during the Islamic period may have been sourced more locally from Timna. The changes in alloy types and lead isotopes suggest that recycling of metals took place in Jerash possibly as early as the Roman period and more frequent from the Byzantine period onwards.

A common issue in non-destructive surface analysis of historical silver coins is depletion of Cu from the near-surface areas, which in turn results in higher Ag content at a coin's surface. This paper reports a non-destructive analytical strategy using µXRF for identification of Ag and Cu surface enrichments and depletions by comparing peak intensity ratios of Ag Kα/Ag Lα, Cu Kα/Ag Kα and Cu Lα/Ag Lα for coins and Ag-Cu standards of similar composition. Our characterization of coins from different contexts and chronologies shows that a multi-standard approach provides the most reliable identification of surface enrichment of Ag and depletion of Cu. Coins possessing Ag surface enrichment were further analysed with LA-ICP-MS to determine any differences in trace element composition between the cores and surface of the coins. We show that the near-surface regions of these coins are enriched in Au and depleted in Co, Ni, As, and Pt relative to their cores. These systematics allow for a more robust assessment of the degree of silver coin surface alteration critically important in measuring the original composition of historical silver coins.

Our characterization of coins from different contexts and chronologies shows that a multi-standard approach provides the most reliable identification of surface enrichment of Ag and depletion of Cu. Coins possessing Ag surface enrichment were further analysed with LA-ICP-MS to determine any differences in trace element composition between the cores and surface of the coins. We show that the near-surface regions of these coins are enriched in Au and depleted in Co, Ni, As, and Pt relative to their cores. These systematics allow for a more robust assessment of the degree of silver coin surface alteration critically important in measuring the original composition of historical silver coins.

Archaeological glass contains information about the movement of goods and ancient economies, yet our understanding of critical aspects of the ancient glass industry is fragmentary. During Roman times, distinct glass types produced in coastal regions of Egypt and the Levant used evaporitic soda (natron) mixed with Nile-derived sands. In the Levant, furnaces for producing colourless Roman glass by addition of manganese have been uncovered, whereas the source of the desirable antimony-decolourised Roman glass remains an enigma. In the Edict of Diocletian, this colourless glass is listed as "Alexandrian" referring to Egypt, but its origin has been ambiguous. Previous studies have found overlapping strontium and neodymium isotope ratios for Levantine and Egyptian glass. Here, we confirm these findings and show for the first time, based on glasses from the ancient city of Gerasa, that hafnium (Hf) isotopes are different in Egyptian and Levantine natron glasses, and that Sb Roman glass is Egyptian. Our work illustrates the value of Hf isotopes in provenancing archaeological glass. We attribute the striking difference in Hf isotopes of Egyptian versus Levantine glasses to sorting of zircons in Nile sediments during longshore drift and aeolian transport along the south-eastern Mediterranean coast leaving behind a less juvenile fraction.

The D” layer at the base of the Earth’s mantle exhibits anomalous seismic properties, which are attributed to heat loss from and chemical interaction with the underlying molten Fe-rich outer core. Here we show that mass transfer due to temperature variations within the D” layer could lead to resolvable fractionation of iron isotopes. We constrain the degree of isotope fractionation by experiments on core-forming Fe alloy liquids at 2100–2300 K and 2 GPa, which demonstrate that heavy Fe isotopes preferentially migrate towards lower temperature and vice versa. We find that this isotope fractionation occurs rapidly due to the high mobility of iron, which reaches 0.013 ± 0.002‰ (2σ) per degree per amu at steady state. Numerical simulations of mantle convection capturing the evolution of a basal thermal boundary layer show that iron isotope fractionation immediately above the core–mantle boundary can reach measurable levels on geologic timescales and that plumes can entrain this fractionated material into the convecting mantle. We suggest that such a process may contribute to the heavy Fe isotope composition of the upper mantle inferred from mantle melts (basalts) and residues (peridotites) relative to chondrites. That being the case, non-traditional stable isotope systems such as Fe may constrain the interactions between the core and mantle.

Background: Acromial morphology is an important pathophysiological factor for the development of subacromial impingement syndrome. There are 3 radiological methods to evaluate acromial morphology: Bigliani, modified Epstein, and acromial angle. However, their reliability have not been compared in a single study, nor using standardized radiographs. Consequently, the evaluation of acromial morphology is currently not validated though its widespread use across the world. The objective of this study was to investigate reliability of the 3 known classifications and the novel Copenhagen Acromial Curve classification. Methods: Three experienced clinicians rated 102 standardized supraspinatus outlet view radiographs with the 4 classification methods in 2 separate sessions a month apart. All measurements were blinded. With an expected kappa (κ) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) > 0.7 (+/−0.15), the target sample size was 87 radiographs. Results: The Bigliani classification had interrater and intrarater reliability ranging from fair to good (κ 0.32-0.41 and 0.26-0.62). The modified Epstein classification had fair to good interrater and intrarater reliability (κ 0.24-0.69 and 0.57-0.63). The acromial angle classification had moderate to good interrater and intrarater reliability (κ 0.53-0.60 and 0.59-0.72). The novel Copenhagen Acromial Curve classification showed moderate to good interrater and intrarater reliability (ICC 0.66-0.71 and 0.75-0.78, respectively). Conclusion: The Copenhagen Acromial Curve was the only classification method with an ICC value > 0.7. The popular Bigliani classification had the worst reliability. The Copenhagen Acromial Curve classification produces numerical data, as opposed to the other 3 classification methods. This could potentially be utilized in future research to establishing cut-off values for treatment stratification.
