Background: Approximately one‐third of US adults have a tattoo, and the prevalence is increasing. Tattooing can result in long‐term exposure to carcinogens and inflammatory and immune responses. Methods: We examined tattooing and risk of hematologic cancers in a population‐based case–control study with 820 cases diagnosed 2019–2021 and 8200 frequency‐matched controls, ages 18–79 years. We calculated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using multivariable‐adjusted logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of tattooing was 22% among Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) cases, 11% among non‐Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases, 16% among myeloid neoplasm cases, and 15% among controls. Though there were no clear patterns of associations between ever receiving a tattoo and risk of HL, NHL, or myeloid neoplasms overall, in analyses restricted to ages 20–60 years, ever receiving a tattoo (OR 2.06 [95% CI 1.01, 4.20]) and receiving a tattoo 10+ years prior (OR 2.64 [95% CI 1.23, 5.68]) were associated with an aggregated group of rarer mature B‐cell NHLs. We also observed elevated risks for a 10+ year latency for myelodysplastic syndromes and chronic myeloid leukemia (OR 1.48 [95% CI 0.40, 5.41], and OR 1.24 [95% CI 0.45, 3.43], respectively). Conclusions: Though estimates were imprecise, we found some suggestive evidence that tattooing may be associated with an increased risk of certain hematologic cancer subtypes. With an estimated 46% prevalence of tattooing in US individuals ages 30–49, additional studies are needed to understand the degree to which these exposures may be associated with hematologic cancer risk. Key Points: Question: How do endometriosis subtypes influence ovarian cancer risk? Findings: Women with endometriosis had 4.2-fold higher ovarian cancer risk than those without endometriosis. Women with ovarian endometriomas and/or deep infiltrating endometriosis, compared with no endometriosis, had 9.7-fold higher risk. Associations between endometriosis subtypes and ovarian cancer histotypes were much greater for type I (endometrioid, clear cell, mucinous, and low-grade serous) compared with type II (high-grade serous) ovarian cancers. Meaning: Women with endometriosis, especially more severe subtypes, have a markedly increased ovarian cancer risk and may be an important population for targeted cancer screening and prevention studies. Importance: Endometriosis has been associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer; however, the associations between endometriosis subtypes and ovarian cancer histotypes have not been well-described. Objective: To evaluate the associations of endometriosis subtypes with incidence of ovarian cancer, both overall and by histotype. Design, Setting, and Participants: Population-based cohort study using data from the Utah Population Database. The cohort was assembled by matching 78 893 women with endometriosis in a 1:5 ratio to women without endometriosis. Exposures: Endometriosis cases were identified via electronic health records and categorized as superficial endometriosis, ovarian endometriomas, deep infiltrating endometriosis, or other. Main Outcomes and Measures: Estimated adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs), adjusted risk differences (aRDs) per 10 000 women, and 95% CIs for overall ovarian cancer, type I ovarian cancer, and type II ovarian cancer comparing women with each type of endometriosis with women without endometriosis. Models accounted for sociodemographic factors, reproductive history, and past gynecologic operations. Results: In this Utah-based cohort, the mean (SD) age at first endometriosis diagnosis was 36 (10) years. There were 597 women with ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer risk was higher among women with endometriosis compared with women without endometriosis (aHR, 4.20 [95% CI, 3.59-4.91]; aRD, 9.90 [95% CI, 7.22-12.57]), and risk of type I ovarian cancer was especially high (aHR, 7.48 [95% CI, 5.80-9.65]; aRD, 7.53 [95% CI, 5.46-9.61]). Ovarian cancer risk was highest in women with deep infiltrating endometriosis and/or ovarian endometriomas for all ovarian cancers (aHR, 9.66 [95% CI, 7.77-12.00]; aRD, 26.71 [95% CI, 20.01-33.41]), type I ovarian cancer (aHR, 18.96 [95% CI, 13.78-26.08]; aRD, 19.57 [95% CI, 13.80-25.35]), and type II ovarian cancer (aHR, 3.72 [95% CI, 2.31-5.98]; aRD, 2.42 [95% CI, −0.01 to 4.85]). Conclusions and Relevance: Ovarian cancer risk was markedly increased among women with ovarian endometriomas and/or deep infiltrating endometriosis. This population may benefit from counseling regarding ovarian cancer risk and prevention and could be an important population for targeted screening and prevention studies. High mammographic density is a well-established risk factor for breast cancer; however, data from Black women are limited. It is largely unknown how mammographic density is associated with breast cancer subtypes among Black women. We examined the association between percent mammographic density (PMD) and breast cancer risk among participants in the Black Women's Health Study. Digital screening mammograms were available for 363 cases and 5541 non-cases. Cumulus software was used to assess PMD. We used inverse probability of sampling weights and Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for age and body mass index, to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) overall and by age at mammography and estrogen receptor (ER) status of the breast tumors. Multivariable models included additional breast cancer risk factors. Tests of statistical significance were 2-sided. In simple models, women in the highest quartile of PMD had 53% increased odds of breast cancer compared to those in the lowest quartile (HR 1.53; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.11). HRs were 1.37 (95% CI: 0.83, 2.24) among women <55 years of age and 1.68 (95% CI: 1.10, 2.56) among women aged ≥55 years. HRs were 1.49 (95% CI: 1.02, 2.16) for ER+ cancer and 1.45 (95% CI: 0.73, 2.87) for ER- cancer. Associations were largely unchanged in multivariable models. In this study of U.S. Black women, higher PMD was associated with ER+ and ER- breast cancer risk. Background: Little is known about current characteristics of individuals with tattoos. We quantified the prevalence of tattooing and associations of demographic, health, and risk-behavior factors with tattooing., Methods: We computed adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) of tattooing in a population-based analysis of > 18,000 Utah adults from the 2020-2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey., Results: The prevalence of tattooing was 26% among women and 22% among men, with the highest prevalence among women ages 25-29 (45%). Tattoo prevalence was higher among younger individuals, individuals with a lower education level, and those without religious affiliation. Tattoo prevalence was higher among indviduals with current tobacco (women: PR = 2.89 [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.60, 3.20]; men: 3.39 [2.98, 3.86]), e-cigarette (women: 2.44 [2.21, 2.69]; men: 2.64 [2.37, 2.94]), and heavy alcohol use (women: 2.16 [1.93, 2.43]; men: 1.89 [1.63, 2.19]). Tattoo prevalence was lower among individuals receiving a flu (women: 0.84 [0.76, 0.92]; men: 0.75 [0.67, 0.84]) or COVID-19 vaccine (women: 0.65 [0.54, 0.79]; men: 0.75 [0.61, 0.92])., Conclusions: Several risk-taking behaviors were associated with tattooing. Psychosocial stress may increase ovarian cancer risk and accelerate disease progression. We examined the association between caregiver burden, a common stressor, and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer. We prospectively followed 67,724 women in the Nurses' Health Study (NHS; 1992-2012) and 70,720 women in the NHSII (2001-2009) who answered questions on informal caregiving (i.e., caregiving outside of work). Women who reported no informal caregiving were considered non-caregivers while, among women who provided care outside of work, caregiver burden was categorized by time spent caregiving and perceived stress from caregiving. For the 34% of women who provided informal care for ≥15 hours per week, 42% described caregiving as moderately to extremely stressful. Pooled multivariate analyses indicated no difference in ovarian cancer risk for women providing ≥15 hours of care per week compared to non-caregivers (hazard ratio (HR)=0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.79-1.18), and no association was evident for women who reported moderate or extreme stress from caregiving compared to non-caregivers (HR=0.96; 95% CI: 0.75-1.22). Together with prior work evaluating job strain and ovarian cancer risk, our findings suggest that, when evaluating a stressor's role in cancer risk, it is critical to consider how the stressor contributes to the overall experience of distress., (© The Author(s) 2024.
