During the past decade there has been a substantial increase in the demand for and cost of health care. Since hospitals are labor intensive, a better understanding of employee job performance may constructively contribute to the care--cost issue. This study included 203 female business office employees from 26 hospitals in a large metropolitan area. The purpose was to ascertain the relationship between (1) attitudinal variables (job satisfaction and job involvement) and (2) characteristic variables (age, time employed, and education level) with job performance. Traditionally the corporation has one role in society: to maximize profits for the shareholder owner.
