We present details on a new measurement of the muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu = (g_\mu -2)/2$. The result is based on positive muon data taken at Fermilab's Muon Campus during the 2019 and 2020 accelerator runs. The measurement uses $3.1$ GeV$/c$ polarized muons stored in a $7.1$-m-radius storage ring with a $1.45$ T uniform magnetic field. The value of $ a_{\mu}$ is determined from the measured difference between the muon spin precession frequency and its cyclotron frequency. This difference is normalized to the strength of the magnetic field, measured using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The ratio is then corrected for small contributions from beam motion, beam dispersion, and transient magnetic fields. We measure $a_\mu = 116 592 057 (25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). This is the world's most precise measurement of this quantity and represents a factor of $2.2$ improvement over our previous result based on the 2018 dataset. In combination, the two datasets yield $a_\mu(\text{FNAL}) = 116 592 055 (24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). Combining this with the measurements from Brookhaven National Laboratory for both positive and negative muons, the new world average is $a_\mu$(exp) $ = 116 592 059 (22) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm)., Comment: 48 pages, 29 figures; 4 pages of Supplement Material; version accepted for publication in Physical Review D

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
The behavior of crosslinking polymer solutions as they transition from liquid-like to solid-like material in flow determines success or failure in several applications, from 3D printing to oil recovery in the earth's subsurface, to a wide variety of biological flows. Dilute polymer solutions flow easily, while concentrated polymers or crosslinked polymer gels can clog pores, nozzles, or channels. We have recently uncovered and described a third regime of flow dynamics in polymers that occurs when crosslinking happens during flow: persistent intermittency. When a dilute alginate solution meets calcium at a Y-shaped microfluidic junction, a persistent and regular pattern of gel deposition and ablation emerges when driven at a constant volumetric flow rate. Chemical concentrations and flow rate control both the deposition process and critical shear stress required to ablate the adhered gel. In this work, we provide an analytical framework to quantitatively describe the intermittent behavior as resulting from diffusively driven deposition in a high Peclet number flow, where convection dominates. Fitting the experimental data to the model allows estimation of the deposition efficiency and \textit{in situ} swelling ratios. Ablation occurs when applied shear stresses overcome either the adhesive energy of the gel or its yield stress. By correlating the results of the analytical analysis with bulk rheology measurements, we find that deposition efficiency increases with the stiffness of the gel formed in flow. Softer gels withstand higher shear stresses before ablation. Both deposition efficiency and gel stiffness increase in flow conditions nearing complete clogging., Comment: 32 pages, 6 figures

We present a new measurement of the positive muon magnetic anomaly, $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu - 2)/2$, from the Fermilab Muon $g\!-\!2$ Experiment using data collected in 2019 and 2020. We have analyzed more than 4 times the number of positrons from muon decay than in our previous result from 2018 data. The systematic error is reduced by more than a factor of 2 due to better running conditions, a more stable beam, and improved knowledge of the magnetic field weighted by the muon distribution, $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, and of the anomalous precession frequency corrected for beam dynamics effects, $\omega_a$. From the ratio $\omega_a / \tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, together with precisely determined external parameters, we determine $a_\mu = 116\,592\,057(25) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.21 ppm). Combining this result with our previous result from the 2018 data, we obtain $a_\mu\text{(FNAL)} = 116\,592\,055(24) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.20 ppm). The new experimental world average is $a_\mu (\text{Exp}) = 116\,592\,059(22)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.19 ppm), which represents a factor of 2 improvement in precision., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Electrically percolating nanowire networks are amongst the most promising candidates for next-generation transparent electrodes. Scientific interest in these materials stems from their intrinsic current distribution heterogeneity, leading to phenomena like percolating pathway re-routing and localized self-heating, which can cause irreversible damage. Without an experimental technique to resolve the current distribution, and an underpinning nonlinear percolation model, one relies on empirical rules and safety factors to engineer these materials. We introduce Bose-Einstein microscopy to address the long-standing problem of imaging active current flow in 2D materials. We report on improvement of the performance of this technique, whereby observation of dynamic redistribution of current pathways becomes feasible. We show how this, combined with existing thermal imaging methods, eliminates the need for assumptions between electrical and thermal properties. This will enable testing and modelling individual junction behaviour and hotspot formation. Investigating both reversible and irreversible mechanisms will contribute to the advancement of devices with improved performance and reliability.

- Abstract
California Senate Bill 74, Budget Act of 2020, required the California Department of Education (CDE) to conduct a study to examine the state's current governance and accountability structures that support California students with an individualized education program (IEP). The study was intended to focus on the end goals of improving outcomes for students with an IEP and increasing special education services provided in the least restrictive environment. For this study, governance is defined as education decision-making authority, along with the structures, policies, and tools through which an entity communicates its decisions and assigns authority and responsibility to other levels of the education system. Accountability is defined as education oversight -- including structures, policies, and tools -- created and implemented at federal, state, and local levels to evaluate and ensure compliance with legal requirements and to encourage implementation of recommended actions and best practices for improvement, all for the purpose of meeting established goals. The key study results include: (1) California's Governance and Accountability Structures; (2) Factors that Most Affected Outcomes for Students with an IEP; (3) Challenges and Opportunities for Improving California's Special Education Governance and Accountability Structures. Profiles of high-performing local educational agencies and recommendations to improve special education governance and accountability are also included. Computer Science - Software Engineering - Abstract
Many of today's applications have an, almost tangible, monolithic nature. They are built as 'islands', purporting to be self contained, offering little or nothing in the way of integration with other applications. In the past, being large and self-contained may have eliminated the need to interact with other solutions to some extent. However, in the business environments of today the interaction with other applications becomes paramount. As a result of this, many ad-hoc point-to-point integration solutions have been built between different applications. This has already led to an 'application spaghetti' at many of our customer sites. Many of today's applications are poorly structured, which makes their responsiveness to business change sluggish. The application spaghetti with its plethora of point-to-point interfaces further inhibits the responsiveness to change.

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
We present the first results of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment for the positive muon magnetic anomaly $a_\mu \equiv (g_\mu-2)/2$. The anomaly is determined from the precision measurements of two angular frequencies. Intensity variation of high-energy positrons from muon decays directly encodes the difference frequency $\omega_a$ between the spin-precession and cyclotron frequencies for polarized muons in a magnetic storage ring. The storage ring magnetic field is measured using nuclear magnetic resonance probes calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency ${\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$ in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^{\circ}$C. The ratio $\omega_a / {\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p}$, together with known fundamental constants, determines $a_\mu({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.46\,ppm). The result is 3.3 standard deviations greater than the standard model prediction and is in excellent agreement with the previous Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) E821 measurement. After combination with previous measurements of both $\mu^+$ and $\mu^-$, the new experimental average of $a_\mu({\rm Exp}) = 116\,592\,061(41)\times 10^{-11}$ (0.35\,ppm) increases the tension between experiment and theory to 4.2 standard deviations, Comment: 10 pages; 4 figures

Physics - Accelerator Physics ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. The sum of the corrections to $\omega_a^m$ is 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 ppm; the uncertainty is small compared to the 0.43 ppm statistical precision of $\omega_a^m$., Comment: 35 pages, 29 figures. Quantum Physics ,Condensed Matter - Quantum Gases - Abstract
Quantum technology is approaching a level of maturity, recently demonstrated in space-borne experiments and in-field measurements, which would allow for adoption by non-specialist users. Parallel advancements made in microprocessor-based electronics and database software can be combined to create robust, versatile and modular experimental monitoring systems. Here, we describe a monitoring network used across a number of cold atom laboratories with a shared laser system. The ability to diagnose malfunction, unexpected or unintended behaviour and passively collect data for key experimental parameters, such as vacuum chamber pressure, laser beam power, or resistances of important conductors, significantly reduces debugging time. This allows for efficient control over a number of experiments and remote control when access is limited., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

- Abstract
The Padvarninkai meteorite is a relatively understudied eucrite, initially misclassified as a shergottite given its strong shock characteristics. In this study, a comprehensive examination of the petrology; mineral composition; major, minor, and trace element abundances; and isotopic composition (C, O) is presented. Padvarninkai is a monomict eucrite consisting of a fine to coarse‐grained lithology and impact melt veins. Pyroxene grains are typically severely fractured and mosaicked whilst plagioclase is either partially or totally converted to maskelynite. Based on shock features observed in pyroxene, plagioclase, and apatite, Padvarninkai can be given a shock classification of M‐S4/5. Despite the high shock experienced by this sample, some of the original igneous textures remain. Compositionally, Padvarninkai is a main group eucrite with a flat REE pattern (~10–12 × CI) and elevated Ni abundances. Whilst both new and literature oxygen isotopes are similar to other eucrites, however, Padvarninkai displays an anomalously high δ13C value. To reconcile the high Ni and δ13C value, impact contamination modeling was conducted. These models could not reconcile both the high Ni and δ13C value with the eucritic δ18O values, arguing against impact as a source for these anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
New results from MAST are presented that focus on validating models in order to extrapolate to future devices. Measurements during start-up experiments have shown how the bulk ion temperature rise scales with the square of the reconnecting field. During the current ramp up models are not able to correctly predict the current diffusion. Experiments have been performed looking at edge and core turbulence. At the edge detailed studies have revealed how filament characteristic are responsible for determining the near and far SOL density profiles. In the core the intrinsic rotation and electron scale turbulence have been measured. The role that the fast ion gradient has on redistributing fast ions through fishbone modes has led to a redesign of the neutral beam injector on MAST Upgrade. In H-mode the turbulence at the pedestal top has been shown to be consistent with being due to electron temperature gradient modes. A reconnection process appears to occur during ELMs and the number of filaments released determines the power profile at the divertor. Resonant magnetic perturbations can mitigate ELMs provided the edge peeling response is maximised and the core kink response minimised. The mitigation of intrinsic error fields with toroidal mode number n>1 has been shown to be important for plasma performance., Comment: 34 pages, 10 figures. - Abstract
Item does not contain fulltext, Prostate MR imaging quality has improved dramatically over recent times, driven by advances in hardware, software, and improved functional imaging techniques. MRI now plays a key role in prostate cancer diagnostic work-up, but outcomes of the MRI-directed pathway are heavily dependent on image quality and optimization. MR sequences can be affected by patient-related degradations relating to motion and susceptibility artifacts which may enable only partial mitigation. In this Review, we explore issues relating to prostate MRI acquisition and interpretation, mitigation strategies at a patient and scanner level, PI-QUAL reporting, and future directions in image quality, including artificial intelligence solutions., 01 januari 2024

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
The phenomenon of redistribution of neutral beam fast-ions due to MHD activity in plasma has been observed on many tokamaks and more recently has been a focus of research on MAST (Turnyanskiy M. et al, 2011 Nucl. Fusion 53 053016). n=1 fishbone modes are observed to cause a large decrease in the neutron emission rate corresponding to a significant perturbation of the fast-ion population in the plasma. Theoretical work on fishbone modes states that the fast-ion distribution itself acts as the source of free energy driving the modes that cause the redistribution. Therefore a series of experiments have been carried out on MAST to investigate a range of plasma density levels at two neutral beam power levels to determine the region within this parameter space in which MHD activity and consequent fast-ion redistribution is suppressed. Analysis of these experiments shows complete suppression of MHD activity at high density with increasing activity and fast-ion redistribution at lower densities and higher NB power accompanied by strong evidence for localisation of the redistribution effect to a specific region in the plasma core. The results also indicate correlations between the form of the modelled fast-ion distribution function, the amplitude and growth rate of the fishbone modes, and the magnitude of the redistribution effect. The same analysis has been carried out on models of MAST-Upgrade baseline plasma scenarios to determine whether significant fast-ion redistribution is likely to occur in that device. A simple change to the neutral-beam injector geometry is proposed which is shown to have a significant mitigating effect in terms of the fishbone mode drive and is therefore expected to allow effective plasma heating and current drive over a wider range of plasma conditions in MAST-Upgrade., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures. The thermal performance of high heat flux components in a fusion reactor could be enhanced significantly by the use of nanofluid coolants, suspensions of a liquid with low concentrations of solid nanoparticles. However, before they are considered viable for fusion, the long-term behaviour of nanofluids must be investigated. This paper reports an experiment which is being prepared to provide data on nanofluid stability, settling and erosion in a HyperVapotron device. Procedures are demonstrated for nanofluid synthesis and quality assessment, and the fluid sample analysis methods are described. The end results from this long-running experiment are expected to allow an initial assessment of the suitability of nanofluids as coolants in a fusion reactor., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

- Abstract
As the Society of Research Administrators International enters its 40th anniversary, it will become necessary to critically evaluate the state of the research administration profession to chart new directions and new ideas, and to solidify our educational, professional and scholarly agendas for the future. What follows is a critical synthesis and evaluation of 20th century thought on the sociology of the professions, with integration of research administration characteristics as a public service profession. It is suggested that we establish a modern theoretical model. The model proposed is not the final one by any means, but this evaluation situates research administration in the overall study of the professions, providing an important theoretical stronghold.
