Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is the most common pregnancy complication in developed countries. Pregnancies affected by FGR, frequently concur with complications and high risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality. To date, no approved treatment is available for pregnant women affected with FGR. The objective of this study was to investigate the contribution of galectin-3 (gal-3), a β-galactoside binding protein involved in pregnancy, placental function and fetal growth. We demonstrated that lack of gal-3 during mouse pregnancy leads to placental dysfunction and drives FGR in the absence of a maternal preeclampsia syndrome. Analysis of gal-3 deficient dams revealed placental inflammation and malperfusion, as well as uterine natural killer cell infiltration with aberrant activation. Our results also show that FGR is associated with a failure to increase maternal circulating gal-3 levels during the second and third trimester in human pregnancies. Placentas from human pregnancies affected by FGR displayed lower gal-3 expression, which correlated with placental dysfunction. These data highlight the importance of gal-3 in the promotion of proper placental function, as its absence leads to placental disease and subsequent FGR.

The aim of this paper is to present the methodology deployed in the Chasicó basin (southern Pampas, Argentina) in order to discuss the differential contribution of primary and secondary lithic sources in the spatial and technological organization of late Holocene hunter-gatherers societies. Such methodology is based on the comparative analysis of curves constructed with data obtained from virtual transects traced over continuous spatial models representing different properties of regional lithic landscapes. Those models were created by interpolation using a technique called Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) from scattered information recovered at point locations (i.e. archaeological sites and localities; n = 12). Investigated raw materials were rhyolites and two varieties of quartzites, and the monitored variables were relative frequency (F%), relative weight (P%) and cortex index (IC). Our results suggest that both varieties of quartzites were mainly procured from secondary sources distributed along the basin and that rhyolites were mostly obtained from primary sources located at the headwaters. El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar la metodología implementada en la cuenca del Arroyo Chasicó (sur de la Región Pampeana Argentina), orientada a discutir el uso diferencial de fuentes de materias primas líticas primarias y secundarias en relación con la organización espacial y tecnológica en sociedades cazadoras-recolectoras del Holoceno tardío. La metodología se basa en el análisis comparativo de curvas construidas con datos procedentes de transectos virtuales, trazados sobre modelos espaciales continuos representando diferentes propiedades de los “paisajes líticos” del área de estudio. Tales modelos se generaron por interpolación mediante la técnica denominada Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) a partir de información procedente de localizaciones puntuales (i.e. sitios y localidades arqueológicos; n = 12). Las materias primas investigadas fueron riolitas y dos variedades de cuarcita y las variables consideradas fueron frecuencia relativa y peso relativo, expresadas ambas en términos porcentuales (F% y P%, respectivamente) e índice de corteza (IC). Los resultados obtenidos indican que, para ambas variedades de cuarcitas, la explotación de fuentes secundarias —distribuidas a lo largo de la cuenca— fue mayor que la de las primarias, mientras que las riolitas fueron obtenidas, principalmente, de las fuentes primarias situadas en las cabeceras.

Membrane cholesterol is critical for signaling processes in a variety of tissues. We will address here current evidence supporting an emerging role of cholesterol on excitation-contraction coupling and glucose transport in skeletal muscle. We have centered our review on the transverse tubule system, a complex network of narrow plasma membrane invaginations that propagate membrane depolarization into the fiber interior and allow nutrient delivery into the fibers. We will discuss current evidence showing that transverse tubule membranes have remarkably high cholesterol levels and we will address how modifications of cholesterol content influence excitation-contraction coupling. In addition, we will discuss how membrane cholesterol levels affect glucose transport by modulating the insertion into the membrane of the main insulin-sensitive glucose transporter GLUT4. Finally, we will address how the increased membrane cholesterol levels displayed by obese animals, which also present insulin resistance, affect these two particular skeletal muscle functions.

Pregnancy is a unique event in which a fetus, despite being genetically and immunologically different from the mother (a hemi-allograft), develops in the uterus. Successful pregnancy implies avoidance of rejection by the maternal immune system. Fetal and maternal immune cells come into direct contact at the decidua, which is a highly specialized mucous membrane that plays a key role in fetal tolerance. Uterine dendritic cells (DC) within the decidua have been implicated in pregnancy maintenance. DC serve as antigen-presenting cells with the unique ability to induce primary immune responses. Just as lymphocytes comprise different subsets, DC subsets have been identified that differentially control lymphocyte function. DC may also act to induce immunologic tolerance and regulation of T cell-mediated immunity. Current understanding of DC immunobiology within the context of mammalian fetal-maternal tolerance is reviewed and discussed herein.

Se presentan las bases teóricas y experimentales para el diseño óptimo de una órtesis que ayude a restringir los movimientos bruscos e involuntarios de niños con parálisis cerebral. La primera etapa, mostrada aquí, es validar los resultados de la simulación a partir de mediciones del movimiento del hombro en personas sanas usando un sistema de adquisición de datos. Mediante optimización se soluciona el problema de minimizar una función de fuerza restringida por valores acotados de la fuerza máxima en los músculos que originan el movimiento. El problema se reduce a 18 ecuaciones de fuerzas con 108 restricciones de cotas máximas en las fuerzas. Las fuerzas obtenidas concuerdan con otros resultados publicados.
