It began in 1869, and today we have 118 elements listed in the Periodic table, thanks to Mendeleev's work. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are elements presented in many organic compounds. Some of them can exhibit photophysical and photochemical properties. Herein, we proposed an easy to make an experiment in chemistry classes to connect both subjects, periodic table and photochemistry, through periodic tables made of fluorescent jellies. A sheet of PET-G was heated and put over the periodic table mold made in a 3D-printing to produce the form used in this work. Quinine and vitamin B2, from tonic water and vitamin supplement, respectively, were the fluorescent compounds selected to be in the gelification process to give the jelly fluorescence. The light source was a black light lamp. This work allowed for the discussion of photophysics and photochemistry concepts, 3D-printing process, gelification, and the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements--IYPT2019--with undergraduate students without the use of expensive reagents or equipment.

As infecções bacterianas continuam sendo uma das principais causas de morbidade e mortalidade nos pacientes transplantados de medula óssea. O período de neutropenia, que compreende os primeiros trinta dias do tratamento, é o mais vulnerável em relação às infecções bacterianas. A melhora na cobertura antibiótica tem alterado a incidência e prevalência dos agentes bacterianos nas últimas décadas. O uso de culturas de vigilância é uma estratégia usada no sentido de identificar um agente capaz de ocasionar morbidade importante nesta fase do tratamento. Entretanto, sua utilização sistemática é criticada no sentido de sua baixa sensibilidade e especificidade. Os autores avaliaram as culturas de vigilância de 50 pacientes nos primeiros 30 dias de transplante do Serviço de Hematologia e Hemoterapia da Santa Casa de São Paulo. Os indivíduos do sexo masculino compreenderam 62% da amostra, sendo o transplante alogênico e de células tronco periférica 68% e 72% respectivamente. A faixa etária prevalente foi de 21 a 40 anos. A leucemia mielóide crônica foi a indicação mais freqüente de transplante. Os agentes Gram positivos foram isolados em 64% das culturas. O local de prevalência de culturas por bactérias Gram positivas ocorreu em pele, região nasal e de inserção de cateter e Gram negativos em região perianal. A avaliação retrospectiva não mostrou relação das culturas de vigilância com a alteração do esquema antibiótico ou à presença de hemoculturas positivas no período.

This paper reports the turrid-like genus Anacithara Hedley, 1922 for the Western Atlantic based on the description of three new species collected from the deep sea of the southwestern Atlantic. Anacithara biconica spec. nov. is characterized by a biconical shell, proto-teleoconch transition with thickened axial riblets, a teleoconch well constricted at suture, a deep suture and strongly crenulated on the body whorl; A. pupiforme spec. nov. has a pupoid shell, proto-teleoconch transition marked by appearance of fine axial riblets, a teleoconch sculptured by rounded, low, attenuated axial ribs, a moderately deep suture that is slightly crenulated on the body whorl; and A. pyrgoforme spec. nov. is diagnosed by a turriform shell, a not regularly convex teleoconch whorls and ribs that are slightly flattened in the subsutural region, and a moderately deep suture that is slightly crenulated on the body whorl. The new species are compared with A. angulosa (E. A. Smith, 1871), A. maltzani (Knudsen, 1952) and A. biscoitoi Nolf & Swinnen, 2011 from the Eastern Atlantic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Niobium pentachloride (NbCl5) is the most used niobium catalyst in organic chemistry. This manuscript briefly reviews some new and interesting applications of this catalyst, like the preparation of 4 H -pyrans, phthaleins, fluoresceins, pyrimidines, triallyltoluenes, triarylmethanes, polymers, and cyclic carbonates which are interesting natural products, biologically or industrially relevant compounds. A comparative study between the most used methodologies for the preparation of piperidinyl pyridines (Buchwald-Hartwig reaction, Ullmann reaction and nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr)) by microwave-assisted piperidination of halopyridines is reported. Our results suggest that the Ullmann reaction is most effective for less reactive halopyridines, while uncatalysed SNAr is sufficient for more reactive ones. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. A total of six genera and 10 species of marine gastropods belonging to the family Epitoniidae were collected from dredges of the continental slope off Brazil during the development of the REVIZEE (Live Resources of the Economic Exclusive Zone) Program. These species, referable to the genera Alora, Amaea, Cycloscala, Epitonium, Gregorioiscala, and Opalia, are reported from bathyal depths off northeastern Brazil. Alora sp., Gregorioiscala pimentai n. sp., and Opalia revizee n. sp. are species heretofore unknown to science. A list of the species of Epitonium and Opalia from the Atlantic coast of South America is presented based primarily on data from the literature. Yield losses in cereal crops under temperate climate conditions due to weed-crop competition, namely Lolium rigidum G., can reach up to 80%, depending on the season and infestation level. Nevertheless, the costs of chemical weed control and the environmental impact caused by herbicides recommend the search for strategies to reduce their input. Therefore, the aim of this work was to study the possibility of reducing the input of different post-emergence herbicides (diclofop-methyl + fenoxaprop-p-ethyl and amidosulfuron + iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium) to control Lolium rigidum G. and broad-leaf weeds in barley under no-till, and to monitor the effect on weed population levels and crop yields. A field experiment was carried out in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009, in an experimental farm in the south of Portugal, combining different herbicide doses applied at different weed development stages. Results show that, for all herbicide doses, the earlier application provides higher weed control efficacy and higher grain yields, indicating that the reduction of doses is possible while maintaining satisfactory crop grain yields.
