De Newgrange en Irlande à Hal Saflieni à Malte ou Gavrinis en Bretagne, les tombeaux néolithiques sont connus pour leur caractère monumental. Loin d’être de simples “contenants” mortuaires, destinés uniquement à recueillir les restes corporels des défunts, ces tombes sont des architectures complexes et multiples, conçues pour accueillir des rites funéraires élaborés, impliquant plusieurs acteurs, plusieurs temps et plusieurs espaces cérémoniels. Pour l’archéologue, l’organisation spatiale de ces architectures et de leurs contenants constitue un véritable fil conducteur permettant de comprendre les pratiques funéraires et les croyances des sociétés néolithiques. Combinant études récentes et synthèses régionales, cet ouvrage explore la configuration de l’architecture de ces tombes (chambres mégalithiques, hypogées, coffres sous tumulus ou cairns, tertres, etc.), l’organisation spatiale des dépôts funéraires et des décors pariétaux, et les relations entre les tombes et leur espace topographique naturel (le paysage). Ce tour d’horizon européen expose ainsi les différentes manières dont les sociétés néolithiques concevaient, construisaient et utilisaient l’espace des morts en Europe de 5000 à 2000 avant J.-C. Mais il offre également des pistes permettant d’interpréter ces choix. From Newgrange in Ireland to Hal Saflieni in Malta or Gavrinis in Brittany, Neolithic tombs are well known for their monumental nature. Far from being simple mortuary “containers”, only aimed at receiving dead bodies, these tombs are complex and multiple architectures that were designed to host elaborate burial rituals involving several actors and several ceremonial times and spaces. For archaeologists, the spatial organisation of these architectures and their contents is a thread to investigate and understand the burial practices and beliefs of Neolithic communities. Combining recent fieldworks and regional surveys, it explores the configuration of tombs architecture (megalithic chambered tombs, rock-cut tombs, cists under tumulus or cairns, barrows, etc.), the spatial organisation of bodies, grave goods and imagery, and the relationships between the tombs and their landscape setting. This European overview shows the different ways Neolithic societies thought, built and used the space of the dead in Europe from 5000 to 2000 BC. But it also offers and discusses ideas about the meaning of these spatial choices.

The presence of painted, carved or sculpted decorations in European funerary contexts makes megalithic art a basic reference in order to classify the use of burial areas. Complex graphic programmes of paintings, engravings and sculptures constituted an essential part of funerary rites. The burial models provided by the Iberian Peninsula are a great contribution to the study of funerary graphics. Moreover, their concurrent open air versions open unforeseen expectations for a re-evaluation of the whole of megalithic art in Europe. La présence de décorations peintes, taillées ou sculptées dans des contextes funéraires européens font de l'art mégalithique une référence de base pour classer l'utilisation des aires d'enterrement. Les programmes graphiques complexes de peintures, des gravures et des sculptures ont constitué une partie essentielle de rites funéraires. Les modèles d'enterrement fournis par la Péninsule Ibérique sont une grande contribution à l'étude des décors funéraires. De plus, leurs pendants simultanés en plein air ouvrent des perspectives inespérées pour une re-évaluation de tout l'art mégalithique en Europe. La presencia de decoraciones pintadas, grabadas o esculpidas en los contextos funerarios europeos, hace del conjunto del arte megalítico una referencia básica sobre las sistemáticas de uso de los espacios sepulcrales. Programas gráficos complejos de pinturas, grabados y esculturas constituyeron una parte fundamental del dispositivo ritual funerario. La aportación que ofrecen los modelos peninsulares al estudio de los programas gráficos funerarios y a las versiones al aire libre que lo acompañan, abre inéditas expectativas para nuevas lecturas del arte megalítico europeo en su conjunto.

The study of adornments found in the necropolis at Valle de las Higueras (Huecas, Toledo) has determined the morphotypology and mineral composition of one quadrangular pendant and 341 stone beads. Most of the beads are short (length ≤ 5 mm), but within this regularity series can be differentiated that might be the result of standardised fabrication processes and different times of acquisition. Portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified the use of phyllosilicates as sepiolite and clinochlore, and above all variscite, a mineral that became especially important for adornments in the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd millennium BC. The inland location of the necropolis, distant from source areas, certifies its remote origin, as far away as northwest Zamora according to the chronological framework. It is still not possible to determine for sure the source of the variscite at Valle de las Higueras. However, the inland location of the necropolis, distant from source areas, certifies its remote origin. The chronology suggests that it might have come from the north-west, in the area of Zamora. Archaeological and chronological data obtained in tombs in the necropolis, together with other inland sites, contribute to understanding variscite circulation in the Iberian Peninsula in the Chalcolithic. It was restricted to a few individuals, both adults and children, who wore necklaces and bracelets. Distance did not condition the arrival of variscite, but the small amounts suggest it was traded together with other ostentation elements, such as sea shells, cinnabar and amber. The heterogeneous regional panorama displays differences in the demand, use and acquisition of variscite depending on the socioeconomic organisation and connection to exchange networks.

Pocos territorios en Europa reúnen la concentración de estelas en piedra que se documentan entre el Tajo y el Duero. La arqueología asegura amplias posibilidades extractivas, con un claro centro neurálgico en el actual distrito de Castelo Branco. Desde los primeros descubrimientos de piezas tan singulares como las de São Martinho, hasta el registro actual, la variedad y diacronía de estelas y menhires en piedra resulta excepcional en el contexto ibérico y europeo. La tradicional lectura, que alejaba los viejos menhires de las estelas del Bronce Final, queda muy matizada ante el uso de referencias temáticas y técnicas semejantes. En este texto aportamos otro argumento a sumar a esas similitudes, con la reutilización de los antiguos soportes como base material para la generación de las estelas del Bronce Final. Las imágenes humanas que se grabaron en estas memorias en piedra expresan narrativas sociales elaboradas. Las secuencias gráficas que argumentamos aseguran el papel político de estas piezas como justificaciones materiales de pasados ancestrales. Indudablemente albergan relatos orales sobre la relación entre los viejos ancestros y los nuevos líderes, justificando el orden del entramado económico asociado al control de la extracción y comercio del metal. Few places in Europe concentrate as many stone stelae as the area between the Tagus and the Douro. Archaeology has shown the ample possibilities for metal mining, the modern region of Castelo Branco being the epicentre in the area. From the first discoveries of such unique objects as the São Martinho stelae to the current record, the variety and diachronicity of stone stelae and menhirs is exceptional on the Iberian and European scales. The traditional interpretation that differentiated between the old menhirs and Late Bronze Age stelae has been nuanced by the evidence of similar themes and techniques. Another argument presented here is the use of the old stones as the basic material to produce the Late Bronze Age stelae. Human images carved on these memorial stones express elaborate social narratives. The graphic sequences described here demonstrate the ‘political’ role of these stones and material justification of ancestral pasts. They were undoubtedly imbued with oral tales about old ancestors and new leaders, to justify the order of the economic system associated with mining and metal trade. International audience; Remains of pictorial decorations in a series of six representative megalithic monuments of Brittany (France) and two French stelae have been studied by micro-Raman spectroscopy for the first time. Fungal colonies on the painted orthostats made it difficult to obtain in situ Raman spectra of the paint components. Nevertheless, paint micro-specimens studied in the laboratory by micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electronic microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy have made possible to characterise the materials present. The minerals α-quartz, albite, microcline, muscovite, phlogopite, celadonite, beryl and anatase have been identified in the granitic rocks supporting the paintings, while dolomite and calcite are dominant in the calcareous rocky substrata. Haematite is the main component of the red pictographs, whereas amorphous carbon and manganese oxides/oxihydroxides have been used in the black ones. Calcite, gypsum and amorphous carbon have been detected as additional components of the paint in some cases. Contamination with modern tracing materials (polystyrene and ε-copper-phthalocyanine blue) has been detected in several cases. The presence of pigments as decorative elements in megalithic monuments of Western France and its possible relation with those of the Iberian Peninsula create interesting expectations for the knowledge of the European megalithic culture.

La oportunidad de retomar el estudio del dolmen del Portillo de las Cortes, Guadalajara, a partir de los materiales conservados en el MAN y de recientes trabajos de campo, ofrece un resultado positivo. Podemos aportar el conocimiento de fuentes de aprovisionamiento, una fecha C14 obtenida de un cráneo recientemente documentado en la reestructuración del MAN, y una nueva lectura de posibles refacturas del monumento. Positive results have been obtained from resuming the study of the dolmen of El Portillo de las Cortes (Guadalajara, Spain) taking into account materials that are nowadays kept in the MAN (Museo Arqueológico Nacional) as well as recent fieldwork. We hereby present a new C14 date obtained from a recently found and documented skull from the MAN, and new perspectives about possible ancient interventions to rebuild the monument and about supply sources for the community that erected it.

L’homme du troisième millénaire doit faire un effort considérable pour analyser des sociétés où les moyens de communication n’ont rien à voir avec ceux dont il dispose à ce jour. Les articles regroupés ici traitent de ces communications qui ont prolongé la parole et la mémoire dans la majorité de la population mondiale jusqu’à une date récente. Les grottes ornées, les mégalithes, les mises en scène funéraires, les décors soignés ou les simples grafitti sur des objets de la vie courante, sont autant de messages difficiles à décrypter aujourd’hui. Les quelques exemples retenus illustrent les choix de chaque culture, avec leurs représentations symboliques, réalistes ou idéalisées dont la forme reste très attachée à la culture orale.

The use of technique is usually considered in European megalithic art as an indicator of the level of culture sophistication attained by a particular community. Traditionally, it was considered that only the Iberian Peninsula is home to painted dolmens. The analysis of chamber H of the Barnenez tumulus together with some information scattered over the continent, prove that painting was part of the graphic programs in the most archetypal Atlantic sites, such as Brittany. A highly rewarding panorama appears for European megalithic art with potential new readings. The most suitable method of detecting paintings and interpreting them in funerary contexts must be reviewed., La técnica ha venido estableciéndose en el arte megalítico europeo como una categoría cultural. Solo la Península Ibérica disponía de dólmenes pintados. Pero algunos datos dispersos en el resto del continente, junto con los análisis que se aportan procedentes de la cámara H del túmulo de Barnenez, certifican que la pintura formó parte de los programas gráfi cos de los más clásicos conjuntos atlánticos, como es el bretón. Se abre un panorama muy enriquecedor de nuevas lecturas para un arte megalítico europeo en el que habrá de contemplarse la metodología pertinente para la detección de pinturas y su interpretación en los discursos funerarios.

This article presents the latest results of the excavations at the site of Las Vegas in Huecas (Toledo). The site is located in an open area, near a stream and at the foot of the Valle de las Higueras necropolis. It is buried by a considerable colluvial deposition and was detected by geophysical survey. The site lacks structures and is made up of a single archaeological layer: it is a secondary deposit, containing Bell Beaker pottery and metal. A 14C sample has dated it to the second half of the 3rd millennium BC. Ceramics are the most abundant remain from this deposit. Macroscopic and X-ray Fluorescence (FRX) analysis of the ceramics indicates a local production, the fast formation of this deposit, and its long-term exposure on the surface. We suggest that it was formed by cleaning and maintenance activities carried out in a nearby occupational area. We suggest that settlement occurred in the valley bottom, with occupations whose ceramic productions differ from the ones found in funerary contexts. Presentamos los resultados de los sondeos del yacimiento de Las Vegas, Huecas (Toledo). Se trata de un área abierta, junto al arroyo y al pie de la necrópolis de Valle de las Higueras. Un fuerte depósito de coluvión sepulta el yacimiento. Sin evidencias en superficie, su detección se realizó mediante prospección geofísica. Carece de estructuras y está formado por un único estrato, un depósito secundario que contiene campaniforme Ciempozuelos y metal, con una fecha C14 de la 2ª mitad del III milenio a.C. La cerámica es el material más abundante. Su estudio macroscópico y mediante fluorescencia de rayos X (FRX) avala su producción local, la rápida formación del depósito y su larga exposición en superficie. Planteamos que el depósito procede de la limpieza y mantenimiento de un área de ocupación anexa. El patrón de poblamiento parece seguir las tierras bajas del valle con ocupaciones cuyas producciones cerámicas difieren de las de los contextos funerarios.

Data and reflections are provided for the discussion of the importance of the Beaker in the funeral practices of the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, in the context of aresearch project which showed population continuity during Late Prehistory, on the Southern Meseta. At the moment, the most widespread proposals, that tend to understand the famous decorated pottery as the visualization of individuality as opposed to megalithic collectivism, show serious problems of generalization when a necropolis as important as Ciempozuelos can be understood like groups of artificial caves. Indeed these structures, in addition to chambers with a false vault, are those that define the necropolis of the Higueras Valley, reiterating characteristic associations of the West Chalcolithic necropolis. The C14 dates show a chronology between 3400 and 1900 cal. BC, therefore at absolutely contemporary moments to the classic examples of the Iberian Peninsula. From half way through the third millennium cal. BC incised Beaker pottery is present in these grave goods, thereby placing it in a very close chronological relationship with the rest of the styles., Se aportan datos y reflexiones a la discusión sobre el papel del campaniforme en las costumbres funerarias del interior peninsular, en el marco de un proyecto de investigación que ha demostrado la continuidad poblacional durante la Prehistoria Reciente en la Meseta Sur. Las propuestas más extendidas actualmente, que abogan por entender las famosas cerámicas decoradas como la visualización de la individualidad frente al colectivismo megalítico, presentan serios problemas de generalización cuando necrópolis tan caracterizadoras del horizonte de incisas meseteño como Ciempozuelos, pueden interpretarse como agrupaciones de cuevas artificiales. Precisamente estas estructuras, además de cámaras con falsa cúpula, son las que definen la necrópolis de Valle de las Higueras, reiterando asociaciones características de las necrópolis calcolíticas del Oeste. Las fechas C14 que aportamos abarcan una cronología entre el 3400 y el 1900 cal BC. Desde mitad del III milenio cal BC. se incorporan a los destacados ajuares cerámicas campaniformes, situando los estilos incisos en una relación cronológica cada vez más próxima con el resto de los estilos.

This paper offers a reflection on the social, cultural and chronological implications of the funeral world of the inland Tagus basin. In particular the data of the province of Toledo, analysed from the site of the megaliths of Azutan and the burial mound of the Castillejo, allows us to propose the contemporaneity of several architectural types in the early Megalithic culture of Iberia and the association between habitats and graves. The economic niches, mainly cultivated meadows with areas for sowing grain and pasture for animals, suggest the existence of a mixed economy in a peasant society practised by groups who returned to the same places from the earliest moments of the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.Se plantea una reflexión sobre las implicaciones sociales, culturales y cronológicas del mundo funerario al interior del Tajo. Concretamente los datos de la provincia de Toledo; analizados desde los yacimientos del dolmen de Azután y del túmulo del Castillejo, plantean la contemporaneidad de distintas versiones arquitectónicas en el megalitismo antiguo peninsular y la asociación manifiesta entre hábitats y sepulturas. Los nichos económicos, fundamentalmente dehesas cultivadas con zonas aclaradas para la siembra de cereal y para los pastos de los animales, abogan por proponer una economía mixta en un modelo de explotación campesina protagonizado por grupos que acuden de modo recurrente a los mismos lugares desde los momentos más antiguos del Neolítico hasta la Edad del Bronce.

Graphite pottery is an increasingly frequent element in the contexts of the Iberian Bronze-Iron Ages. This paper summarises its current dispersal, centred on the eastern Iberian Peninsula, especially in the interior, so that it becomes a good indicator of the relationships established on the Meseta during this period. Most graphite pots are pieces of medium and small size, of good quality, dark colour, non-exclusive shapes and a decoration that allows us to distinguish six different variants. Only the technical aspects link them with the French examples, which have a similar chronology.Las cerámicas grafitadas son un elemento cada vez más frecuente en los contextos del Bronce-Hierro peninsular. En este artículo se recoge su dispersión actual, centrada en la vertiente oriental y de gran profusión en las tierras del interior hasta el punto de convertirse en un buen indicador de las relaciones mantenidas por la Meseta durante este periodo. Mayoritariamente estamos ante piezas de mediano y pequeño tamaño, de buena calidad, color oscuro, perfiles no exclusivos y una decoración que permite diferenciar seis variantes diferentes. Sólo la importancia técnica que suponen sigue ligándolas a las francesas con las que tienen entre otras cosas una cronología similar.

The continuation of the excavation and consolidation projects in the megaliths of the municipality of Alcántara allows us to change and enrich the data of the first season. The Alcántara group of tombs is confirmed as of great interest. Although unpublished hitherto, they permit us to propose certain questions about the location of the funerary deposits and, indeed, about the economic capacity of groups which have been thought to be poor, retarded and marginal.La continuación de los trabajos de excavación y consolidación en los dólmenes del término de Alcántara, permite matizar y enriquecer los datos de la primera campaña. El grupo de Alcántara se confirma como de alto interés. De resultar completamente inédito por lo que se refiere a sus materiales y a la presencia de grafías megalíticas, se dibuja ahora como especialmente rico, con ajuares bien conservados. La situación de los mismos, su calidad y variedad de materias primas nos permiten proponer una serie de cuestiones sobre ubicación de los depósitos funerarios y, desde luego, sobre la capacidad económica de unos grupos sociales que se suponían pobres, retardatarios y marginales.

Several projects on the megalithic sites in the basin of the river Tagus contribute evidences on the close relation between stelae with engraved weapons and chronologically advanced megalithic graves. The importance of human images in the development of Iberian megalithic art supports an evolution of these contents toward pieces with engraved weapons which dating back to the 3rd millennium cal BC. From the analysis of the evidences reported by the whole geographical sector, this paper is also aimed at determining if the graphic resources used in these stelae express any kind of identity. Visible stelae in barrows and chambers from the 3rd millennium cal BC would be the images around which sepulchral areas were progressively added, thus constituting true ancestral references throughout the Bronze Age., The excavations of Santiago de Alcántara dolmens are part of the Project “Graphical Markers and Megalith Builders”, funded by the Extremadura Regional Government and the Town Council of Santiago de Alcántara.

The UAH team is developing successive projects of heritage evaluation in the International Tagus, focused on the megalithic culture. Our surveys, based on the theoretical statement of a predictive model that considers the presence of outdoor paintings, make the Sierra de San Pedro one of the most important schematic painting groups of the Iberian Peninsula. Its parallel development to the sites with outdoor engravings in the International Tagus draws a complex set of symbols with a major role in the definition of megalithic territories. The identification of Palaeolithic figures coincides with similar recurrences documented in outdoor sites of the western peninsula, pointing to the resort to the past as one of the arguments of vindication and use of traditional territories.El equipo de la UAH viene desarrollando sucesivos proyectos de valoración patrimonial en el Tajo Internacional centrados en la cultura megalítica. Nuestras prospecciones a partir de la exposición teórica de un modelo predictivo que considera la presencia de pinturas al aire libre, hacen de la Sierra de San Pedro uno de los más importantes conjuntos de la pintura esquemática de la Península Ibérica. Su desarrollo paralelo a los yacimientos con grabados al aire libre del Tajo Internacional dibuja un complejo entramado de símbolos con un importante papel en la definición de los territorios megalíticos. La identificación de figuras paleolíticas coincide con recurrencias similares documentadas en los yacimientos al aire libre del occidente peninsular, apuntando al recurso al pasado como uno de los argumentos de reivindicación y uso de territorios tradicionales.

Presentamos la inédita presencia de cuevas artificiales y arquitecturas de mampostería en el interior de la Península Ibérica, así como la interesante asociación de estas estructuras a materiales campaniformes y ajuares de prestigio. Las implicaciones que posee esta panorámica para la valoración de un largo decurso del megalitismo interior, conectan con la realidad de las amplias capacidades de interacción que éste demuestra.

The excavation of the tomb of El Castillejo, at Huecas, has provided bone remains of at least nine individuals. The arrangement of the corpses, the visibility of the tomb and its proximity to an important village and to artificial caves, raises numerous problems about the traditional interpretation of the Neolithic funerary world and the Chalcolithic in the Meseta. Its clear collectivism and the importance of the tomb relates this burial to the Megalithic culture, in spite of lacking large stone structures. The possible symbolic connection among the buried and an early dwelling structure, adds interest to the results of an investigation that we hope to continue.La excavación del túmulo del Castillejo, en Huecas, ha proporcionado restos óseos de al menos nueve individuos. La disposición de los cadáveres, la visibilidad del túmulo y su proximidad a un poblado importante y a otros enterramientos en cueva artificial, plantea numerosas cuestiones acerca de la interpretación tradicional del mundo funerario neolítico y calcolítico meseteño. Su claro colectivismo y la envergadura del túmulo relacionan este enterramiento con el megalitismo, pese a carecer de estructuras de esa índole. La posible conexión simbólica entre los enterrados y una subestructura habitacional, añade interés a los resultados de una investigación que esperamos poder continuar.

We present the first results of the excavation of megaliths in the municipality of Alcántara (Cáceres), aimed to their consolidation and restoration. They are built of slate and possess materials and engravings that indicate the existence of exchange net works in this sector of the Tejo, which is traditionally interpreted as marginal and practically depopulated in the IV and III millennium b. C. Of note is the presence of a grave with plain Bell Beaker pottery, vessel and bowl dished omphalos base, and sheet metal.Se dan a conocer los primeros resultados de la excavación de dólmenes en el término de Alcántara (Cáceres), con el objeto de su consolidación y restauración. Se trata de arquitecturas en pizarra con el interés de poseer grabados megalíticos y materiales que indican la existencia de redes de intercambio en este sector del Tajo, tradicionalmente interpretado como marginal y prácticamente deshabitado en el transcurso del IV y III milenio a.C. Destaca la presencia de un ajuar campaniforme liso con vaso, cuenco con umbo y laminita metálica.
