There is growing evidence of significant changes in components of the Antarctic climate system, an important issue given the influence Antarctica has on global climate. It is important to infer to what extent these regional changes could be attributed to human-induced processes and to what extent to natural variability. Standard methods, such as linear trend estimates or piecewise linear trends can be inadequate since they may result in erratic, non-systematic results, particularly if different scales of variability are present in each record and various records are to be compared. The Orcadas Antarctic Station (Agentina), with daily surface meteorological observations since April 1903, provides Antarctica´s longest observational record. This study analyzes the Orcadas seasonal surface temperature variability. Multidecadal variability and short term trends are studied to provide an improved assessment of climate evolution and necessary information for the determination of mechanisms driving regional/local change. A combined method using Wavelet Transform (WT), non-linear statistical model approaches and derivative of fits is developed. This methodology is also applied for validation and comparison to the Gomez ice core oxygen isotope record for the 1857-2006 and 1903-2006 time intervals. Significant quasi 50-year and quasi 20-year variability bands were obtained, both for the quarterly and seasonal Orcadas temperature records, with warming (cooling) periods detected between 1903-1912, 1927- 1961 and 1972-2004 (1912-1927 and 1962-1972). If seasons are considered, the only one with a fairly sustained warming is summer, where actual cooling is observed only at the beginning, prior to the early 1930s. Quasi 50-year variability was also detected in the Gomez record. Long periods are obtained in the model fits, longer than the time series, which varied with window length. Though not representing variability cycles, they could represent the best fit of the non-linear, non oscillating asymptotic stationary component of the series, i.e. a non-linear trend. El estudio busca definir las condiciones medias de la circulación troposférica y posibles forzantes asociados a la frecuencia de ocurrencia de noches frías (TN10) y noches cálidas (TN90) durante el invierno austral (JJA) sobre Argentina subtropical, al norte de 40°S y adyacencias (ASA) a partir de datos de estaciones meteorológicas y de reanálisis (NCEP/DOE AMIP-II y ECMWF ERA-interim). Se encuentra que la frecuencia de noches cálidas (Tmin superiores al percentil 90, TN90) está modulada interanualmente por la propagación de ondas cuasi-estacionarias (OCE) de Rossby inducidas por anomalías de convección en el Índico y el Pacífico. La alta frecuencia de noches cálidas está asociada a calentamiento anómalo del Pacífico central ecuatorial (fase positiva del El Niño-Oscilación del Sur, ENOS). La baja frecuencia de noches cálidas está relacionada con convección anómala sobre el área monzónica de la India y el Índico sur tropical occidental. Esto favorece la propagación de actividad de OCE de Rossby sobre el Índico, el Pacífico y el sur de Sudamérica. Tal teleconexión a su vez favorece la alta frecuencia de noches frías (Tmin inferiores al percentil 10, TN10). En cambio la baja frecuencia de noches frías está vinculada a variabilidad de baja frecuencia del modo de variabilidad de altas latitudes del hemisferio sur (el MAS). Se encuentra que el fortalecimiento (debilitamiento) del jet subtropical sobre Sudamérica y océanos adyacentes caracteriza los inviernos con alta (baja) frecuencia de noches frías (cálidas) en ASA. Los forzantes remotos encontrados involucran procesos atmosféricos/oceánicos que se interconectan interestacionalmente, lo cual podría permitir desarrollar el pronóstico estadístico-dinámico para invierno de alta o baja frecuencia de noches frías o cálidas en invierno. The study aims to examine the mean conditions of the tropospheric circulation and possible forcing associated with the occurrence frequency of cold nights (TN10) and warm nights (TN90) during winter (JJA) over subtropical Argentina, to the north of 40°S and surrounding areas (ASA) from meteorological stations and (NCEP/DOE AMIP-II and ECMWF ERA-interim) reanalysis data. It is found that the frequency of warm nights (Tmin over percentile 90, TN90) is modulated at interannual scales by quasi-stationary wave propagation induced by convection anomalies in the Indic and Pacific. The high frequency of warm nights is associated with anomalous warming over the central equatorial Pacific (positive phase of El Niño-Southern Oscillation, ENSO). The low frequency of warm nights is linked to anomalous convection over the monsoon Indian area and the western tropical southern Indic. Hence quasi-stationary Rossby wave activity propagation is favored over the Indic, Pacific and southern South America. Such a teleconnection favors in turn the high fequency of cold nights (Tmin below percentile 10, TN10). Instead, the low frequency of cold nights is linked to the low-frequency variability of the Southern Hemisphere high-latitude mode (SAM). It is found that winters with high (low) frequency of cold (warm) nights are characterized by a strengthening (weakening) of the subtropical jet over southern South America and adjacent areas. The current remote forcings are related with atmospheric/oceanic processes that are interconnected at seasonal-interseasonal scales, which could allow us to develop statistical-dynamical forecasts for the higher or lower occurrence of warm or cold nights in winter. Dentro de las variables que influyen en la obtención del rendimiento de un cultivo agrícola, una delas fuentes de mayor variabilidad es el clima, sobre todo para aquellos casos que se realizan a cielo abierto yen secano, como es el caso del trigo en la Región Pampeana. En este trabajo de tesis se realiza un estudioexhaustivo a escala climática de la influencia de los extremos de temperatura en los rendimientos de trigoocurridos en los últimos 30 años, en diferentes sitios de la Región Pampeana ampliada (Argentina). Para ellose tomaron distintos índices térmicos a escala decádica (10 días) y mensual, derivados de datos diarios detemperatura máxima y mínima de 28 localidades de la región y datos fenométricos de rendimientos de trigosuministrados por el Ministerio de Agricultura, Ganadería y Pesca de la Nación, para las campañas agrícolas 1980-1981 al 2009-2010. Los índices de extremos de temperatura considerados tuvieron en cuenta, para sudefinición, umbrales fijos de interés agronómico (tales como los asociados a heladas meteorológicas oagrometeorológicas) y umbrales basados en percentiles (10 y 90), de manera de tomar aquellos casosextremos respecto a la climatología de cada lugar. Además de los índices mencionados se consideró tambiénla amplitud térmica (DTR). Distintas metodologías estadísticas, que incluyeron cálculos de correlaciones ymétodos no paramétricos, permitieron encontrar asociaciones significativas entre los extremos detemperatura y los rendimientos. Los resultados obtenidos destacan un impacto diferenciado de cada extremo,no solamente en lo que respecta al índice térmico o a la etapa fenológica del trigo, sino también a la regiónde la Pampa Húmeda considerada. Los índices relacionados con temperaturas mínimas y máximas cálidastuvieron una influencia negativa sobre los rendimientos, siendo más marcado el efecto de las máximascálidas en las localidades del oeste y de las mínimas cálidas en las estaciones del este, donde climáticamentehay una mejor disponibilidad de agua. Esto se termina reflejando en las relaciones encontradas con DTR, que en términos generales evidencia una relación positiva en las localidades ubicadas en eleste de la Pampa Húmeda, mientras que las ubicadas al oeste presentan una relación negativa. Losíndices relacionados con las temperaturas mínimas frías tuvieron un impacto diferenciado (positivo onegativo) en función del período (y por ende, la fase fenológica) considerado. Los resultados vinculados conlas temperaturas “máximas frías”, en cambio, evidenciaron un influencia positiva en todo el ciclo del trigo. Estos resultados resaltan la importancia que tiene el estudio de extremos climáticos en forma diferenciada, yplantean la necesidad de poder avanzar en estudios de pronóstico estacional de extremos climáticos paramejorar las estrategias de manejo de cultivos Among the variables that influence the yield of an agricultural crop, one of the sources of greatervariability is the climate, especially in opencast and rainfed agriculture, such as the case of wheat in the Argentine Pampa. In this thesis, a comprehensive climatic study of the influence of temperature extremes on wheat yields occurring in the last 30 years at different sites of the extended Pampean Region (Argentina) is carried out. To do this, different thermal indices were taken at decadic (10 days) and monthly scale, derivedfrom daily data of maximum and minimum temperature of 28 meteorological station of the region andphenometric data of wheat yields supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, for theagricultural campaigns 1980-81 to 2009-2010. The temperature extremes indices considered, for theirdefinition, fixed thresholds of agronomic interest (such as those associated with meteorological or agrometeorological frosts) and thresholds based on percentiles (10 and 90), in order to take extreme cases withrespect to the climatology of each place. In addition to the mentioned indices, the diurnal temperature range (DTR) was also considered. Different statistical methodologies, including correlations calculus and nonparametricmethods, allowed to find significant associations between temperature extremes and yields. Theresults highlight a differentiated impact of each thermal extreme, not only with respect to the index analyzedor the phenological stage of the wheat, but also to the region of the Pampa Humid considered. The indicesrelated to minimum and maximum temperatures had a negative influence on the yields. The warmermaximum temperature (warm days) had a greater impact over the western locations and the warmestminimum temperature (warm nights) in the eastern stations, where climatically there is a better wateravailability. This is reflected in the relationships found with DTR, which in general terms showed a positive (negative) relationship in the localities located in the east (west) of the Humid Pampa. The indices related tothe cold minimum temperatures (cold nights) had a differentiated impact (positive or negative) in relation tothe period (and therefore, the phenological phase) considered. The results associated with the "coldmaximum" temperatures (cold days), on the other hand, showed a positive influence throughout the wheatcycle. These results highlight the importance of the study of climatic extremes in a differentiated way, andraise the need to progress in seasonal forecast studies of climatic extremes to improve crop managementstrategies.
