1. Teaching during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The coronavirus pandemic has had a profound impact on teaching. As a result of the crisis, instructors world-wide had to quickly adapt and shift to remote teaching. This paper describes three useful methods of instruction used in Northern New York State Colleges (United States) and KOSEN's National Institute of Technology at Suzuka College (Japan), during the crisis. It also provides suggestions to enhance one's teaching experiences as well as students' learning during the pandemic. General information about the coronavirus is included too.

31. Problem Based Learning in Metaverse

Abstract

Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a powerful tool for both science and engineering education in the real world. Therefore, Japanese educators/researchers (with assistance from a US educator) carried out a pilot study to determine the effectiveness of using PBL activities in Metaverse. Their project was carried out by student teams from the US and Japan. Each team worked independently on the same PBL project. A discussion about this successful pilot study is provided. An International Program in Creative Education is successfully being carried out by educators in the United States and Japan. Its main goals are to turn students of all ages onto science and engineering and to prepare them to be critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. A brief description of this national award winning program is presented. Also the authors' definition of creativity and standards-based lesson ideas are provided.

35. Science Fair Competition Generates Excitement and Promotes Creative Thinking in Japan

Abstract

Educators in the U.S. and Japan have developed an international program to promote creative thinking in science. Their program includes a science fair component. This paper (which has been presented in both the U.S. and Japan) discusses creativity and describes a science fair activity, that the authors recently carried out in Japan. The special program in creative education is sponsored by the Northern New York Section of the American Chemical Society and by Suzuka National College of Technology in Japan.

This exciting new way of teaching high school/college chemistry combines music, visual aids, and chemical experiments in multi-sensory lessons that motivate students and provide them with meaningful learning experiences in science. The method, known as the Chemical Sensation Project, acknowledges that some individuals learn by seeing or hearing, and others learn by actively performing activities, so it incorporates diverse learning styles to meet the needs of all students.
