Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) overcomes the optical diffraction limit by folding high-frequency components into the baseband of the optical system, where they can be extracted and then repositioned to their original location in the Fourier domain. Although SIM is considered superior to other super-resolution (SR) methods in terms of compatibility with live cell imaging and optical setup simplicity, its reliance on image reconstruction restricts its temporal resolution and may introduce distortions in the super-resolved image. These inherent drawbacks are exacerbated in extended-SIM im-plementations, where spatial resolution surpasses the diffraction limit by more than 2-fold. Here, we present and demon-strate the Tessellation Structured Illumination Microscopy (TSIM) framework, which introduces a revived image recon-struction paradigm. With TSIM both the temporal resolution limit and the reconstruction artifacts that impact extended-SIM, are alleviated, without compromising the achievable spatial resolution.

The study of van der Waals heterostructures with an interlayer twist, known as "twistronics", has been instrumental in advancing contemporary condensed matter research. Most importantly, it has underpinned the emergence of a multitude of strongly-correlated phases, many of which derive from the topology of the physical system. Here, we explore the application of the twistronics paradigm in plasmonic systems with nontrivial topology, by creating a moir\'e skyrmion superlattice using two superimposed plasmonic skyrmion lattices, twisted at a "magic" angle. The complex electric field distribution of the moir\'e skyrmion superlattice is measured using time-resolved vector microscopy, revealing that each super-cell possesses very large topological invariants and harbors a "skyrmion bag", the size of which is controllable by the twist angle and center of rotation. Our work shows how twistronics leads to a diversity of topological features in optical fields, providing a new route to locally manipulate electromagnetic field distributions, which is crucial for future structured light-matter interaction.

Structured Illumination Microscopy (SIM) allows access to spatial information beyond the diffraction limit by folding high frequency components into the optical system's base-band. Using various algorithmic techniques, an image containing sub-wavelength information can be reconstructed. While linear SIM is considered superior to other Super-Resolution methods in its compatibility with live cell imaging and optical setup simplicity, it is inherently limited in terms of its temporal resolution as each image requires multiple frames. Here we present a practical and efficient reconstruction approach supporting up to 3-fold temporal resolution increase with SIM, using overlapping regions in the folded frequency components within the Fourier domain. Our approach can be readily implemented in any previously introduced SIM realization to both improve the temporal resolution and to simplify the optical apparatus.

The complex range of interactions between electrons and electromagnetic fields gave rise to countless scientific and technological advances. A prime example is photon-induced nearfield electron microscopy (PINEM), enabling the detection of confined electric fields in illuminated nanostructures with unprecedented spatial resolution. However, PINEM is limited by its dependence on strong fields, making it unsuitable for sensitive samples, and its inability to resolve complex phasor information. Here, we leverage the nonlinear, over-constrained nature of PINEM to present an algorithmic microscopy approach, achieving far superior nearfield imaging capabilities. Our algorithm relies on free-electron Ramsey-type interferometry to produce orders-of-magnitude improvement in sensitivity and ambiguity-immune nearfield phase reconstruction, both of which are optimal when the electron exhibits a fully quantum behavior. Our results demonstrate the potential of combining algorithmic approaches with novel modalities in electron microscopy, and may lead to various applications from imaging sensitive biological samples to performing full-field tomography of confined light.

Metamaterials and metasurfaces are at the pinnacle of wave propagation engineering, yet their design has thus far been mainly focused on deep-subwavelength periodicities, practically forming an effective medium. Such an approach overlooks important structural degrees-of-freedom, e.g. the interplay between the corrugation periodicity and depth and how it affects the beam transport. Here, we present Slack Metasurfaces - weakly modulated metal-dielectric interfaces unlocking all structural degrees-of-freedom that affect the wave propagation. We experimentally demonstrate control over the anisotropy of surface waves in such metasurfaces, leading to yet, unexplored, dual stage topological transitions. We further utilize these metasurfaces to show unique backward focusing of surface waves driven by an umklapp process - momentum relaxation empowered by the periodic nature of the structure. Hybrid photonic structures of plasmonic metasurfaces coupled to atomically thin semiconductors have emerged as a versatile platform for strong light-matter interaction, supporting both strong coupling and parametric nonlinearities. However, designing optimized nonlinear hybrid metasurfaces is a complex task, as the multiple parameters' contribution to the nonlinear response is elusive. Here we present a simple yet powerful strategy for maximizing the nonlinear response of the hybrid structures based on evolutionary inverse design of the metasurface's near-field enhancement around the excitonic frequency. We show that the strong coupling greatly enhances the nonlinear signal, and that its magnitude is mainly determined by the Rabi splitting, making it robust to geometrical variations of the metasurface. Furthermore, the large Rabi splitting attained by these hybrid structures enables broadband operation over the frequencies of the hybridized modes. Our results constitute a significant step towards achieving flexible nonlinear control, which can benefit applications in nonlinear frequency conversion, all-optical switching, and phase-controlled nonlinear metasurfaces.

Room-temperature strong coupling between plasmonic nanocavities and monolayer semiconductors is a prominent path towards efficient, integrated light-matter interactions. However, designing such systems is challenging due to the nontrivial dependence of the strong coupling on various properties of the cavity and emitter, as well as the subwavelength scale of the interaction. In this work, we develop a methodology for obtaining hybrid nanostructures consisting of plasmonic metasurfaces coupled to atomically thin WS2 layers, exhibiting extreme values of Rabi splitting, by inverse design of the near-field plasmonic response. Contrary to common measures such as the quality factor or the mode volume, our method relies on an overlap-integral-based metric. We experimentally measure large values of Rabi splitting for our nanoantenna designs, while providing theoretically optimal configurations for several additional types of nanostructures. Our results open a path to maximizing light-matter interactions in integrated platforms, for classical and quantum-optical applications.

Spatial modulation of electron beams is an essential tool for various applications such as nanolithography and imaging, yet its implementations are severely limited and inherently non-tunable. Conversely, light-driven electron spatial modulation could potentially allow arbitrary electron wavefront shaping via the underlying mechanism of photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM). Here, we present tunable photon-induced spatial modulation of electrons through their externally-controlled interaction with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Using recently developed methods of shaping SPP patterns, we demonstrate a dynamic control of the electron beam with a variety of high-quality electron distributions. Intriguingly, by utilizing the intrinsic interaction nonlinearity, we attain the first observation of 2D spatial Rabi oscillations and generate electron features below the SPP wavelength. Our work paves the way to on-demand electron wavefront shaping at ultrafast timescales, with prospects for aberration correction, nano-fabrication and material characterization.

For over 80 years of research, the conventional description of free-electron radiation phenomena, such as Cherenkov radiation, has remained unchanged: classical three-dimensional electromagnetic waves. Interestingly, in reduced dimensionality, the properties of free-electron radiation are predicted to fundamentally change. Here, we present the first observation of Cherenkov surface waves, wherein free electrons emit narrow-bandwidth photonic quasiparticles propagating in two-dimensions. The low dimensionality and narrow bandwidth of the effect enable to identify quantized emission events through electron energy loss spectroscopy. Our results support the recent theoretical prediction that free electrons do not always emit classical light and can instead become entangled with the photons they emit. The two-dimensional Cherenkov interaction achieves quantum coupling strengths over two orders of magnitude larger than ever reported, reaching the single-electron-single-photon interaction regime for the first time with free electrons. Our findings pave the way to previously unexplored phenomena in free-electron quantum optics, facilitating bright, free-electron-based quantum emitters of heralded Fock states.

Raman transitions are used in quantum simulations with ultracold atoms for cooling, spectroscopy and creation of artificial gauge fields. Spatial shaping of the Raman fields allows local control of the effective Rabi frequency, which can be mapped to the atomic spin. Evanescent Raman fields are of special interest as they can provide a new degree of control emanating from their rapidly decaying profile and for their ability to generate features below the diffraction limit. This opens the door to the formation of sub-wavelength spin textures. In this work, we present a theoretical and numerical study of Raman Rabi frequency in the presence of evanescent driving fields. We show how spin textures can be created by spatially varying driving fields and demonstrate a skyrmionium lattice - a periodic array of topological spin excitations, each of which is composed of two skyrmions with opposite topological charges. High-order optical vortices are inherently unstable, as they tend to split up under perturbation to a series of vortices with unity charge. Control over the perturbation opens up a new degree of freedom to control and tune their location in a 2D-space, with immediate implications on trapping, light-matter interactions and super-resolution imaging. Here, we present a continuous nano-scale tuning of the spatial location of plasmonic vortices on metal-air interface achieved by varying the polarization state of the light coupled to the surface plasmons through a spiral slit. We demonstrate such a control at nano-scale resolution using phase-resolved near-field microscopy.

We present an optical mode solver for a whispering gallery resonator coupled to an adjacent arbitrary shaped nano-particle that breaks the axial symmetry of the resonator. Such a hybrid resonator-nanoparticle is similar to what was recently used for bio-detection and for field enhancement. We demonstrate our solver by parametrically studying a toroid-nanoplasmonic device and get the optimal nano-plasmonic size for maximal enhancement. We investigate cases near a plasmonic resonance as well as far from a plasmonic resonance. Unlike common plasmons that typically benefit from working near their resonance, here working far from plasmonic resonance provides comparable performance. We show that a single-interface between regular and double-negative (DNG) media constitutes the core structure of a perfect lens and, furthermore, substantially outperforms the highly discussed DNG slab-based lens under imperfect conditions, maintaining unbounded resolution. We identify the perfect-lensing mechanism as the excitation of a Brewster (real improper) mode at the interface - a mode with a completely flat-band dispersion at media-matching conditions, perfectly transferring all incident waves including evanescent. A lossless DNG slab retains the single-interface perfect-lensing characteristics solely because such a Brewster mode excited at the front (input) slab interface merges in a non-interacting fashion with a confined surface-mode at the rear (output) - thereby preserving its original flat-band dispersion. While the single interface perfect lens retains its high resolution under loss, imperfect media-matching and off-resonance excitations, the DNG slab lens performance rapidly deteriorates under such conditions due to excitation of the symmetric and anti-symmetric slab surface-modes.

Open quantum systems consisting of coupled bound and continuum states have been studied in a variety of physical systems, particularly within the scope of nuclear, atomic and molecular physics. In the open systems, the effects of the continuum decay channels are accounted for by indirect non-Hermitian couplings among the quasi-bound states. Here we explore anti-Hermitian coupling in a plasmonic system for spatially manipulating light on the nano-scale. We show that by utilizing the anti-Hermitian coupling, plasmonic antennas closely packed within only {\lambda}/15 separations can be individually excited from the far field, which are otherwise indistinguishable from each other., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Transformation optics has recently attracted extensive interest, since it provides a novel design methodology for manipulating light at will. Although transformation optics in principle embraces all forms of electromagnetic phenomena on all length scales, so far, much less efforts have been devoted to near-field optical waves, such as surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Due to the tight confinement and strong field enhancement, SPPs are widely used for various purposes at the subwavelength scale. Taking advantage of transformation optics, here we demonstrate that the confinement as well as propagation of SPPs can be managed in a prescribed manner by careful control of the dielectric material properties adjacent to a metal. Since the metal properties are completely unaltered, it provides a straightforward way for practical realizations. We show that our approach can assist to tightly bound SPPs over a broad wavelength band at uneven and curved surfaces, where SPPs would normally suffer significant scattering losses. In addition, a plasmonic waveguide bend and a plasmonic Luneburg lens with practical designs are proposed. It is expected that merging the unprecedented design flexibility based on transformation optics with the unique optical properties of surface modes will lead to a host of fascinating near-field optical phenomena and devices., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Laser science has tackled physical limitations to achieve higher power, faster and smaller light sources. The quest for ultra-compact laser that can directly generate coherent optical fields at the nano-scale, far beyond the diffraction limit of light, remains a key fundamental challenge. Microscopic lasers based on photonic crystals, micro-disks, metal clad cavities and nanowires can now reach the diffraction limit, which restricts both the optical mode size and physical device dimension to be larger than half a wavelength. While surface plasmons are capable of tightly localizing light, ohmic loss at optical frequencies has inhibited the realization of truly nano-scale lasers. Recent theory has proposed a way to significantly reduce plasmonic loss while maintaining ultra-small modes by using a hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Using this approach, we report an experimental demonstration of nano-scale plasmonic lasers producing optical modes 100 times smaller than the diffraction limit, utilizing a high gain Cadmium Sulphide semiconductor nanowire atop a Silver surface separated by a 5 nm thick insulating gap. Direct measurements of emission lifetime reveal a broad-band enhancement of the nanowire's spontaneous emission rate by up to 6 times due to the strong mode confinement and the signature of apparently threshold-less lasing. Since plasmonic modes have no cut-off, we show down-scaling of the lateral dimensions of both device and optical mode. As these optical coherent sources approach molecular and electronics length scales, plasmonic lasers offer the possibility to explore extreme interactions between light and matter, opening new avenues in active photonic circuits, bio-sensing and quantum information technology., Comment: 15 pages, 4 Figures

Invisibility or cloaking has captured human's imagination for many years. With the recent advancement of metamaterials, several theoretical proposals show cloaking of objects is possible, however, so far there is a lack of an experimental demonstration at optical frequencies. Here, we report the first experimental realization of a dielectric optical cloak. The cloak is designed using quasi-conformal mapping to conceal an object that is placed under a curved reflecting surface which imitates the reflection of a flat surface. Our cloak consists only of isotropic dielectric materials which enables broadband and low-loss invisibility at a wavelength range of 1400-1800 nm., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The diffractive nature of light has limited optics and photonics to operate at scales much larger than the wavelength of light. The major challenge in scaling-down integrated photonics is how to mold the light flow below diffraction-limit in all three dimensions. A high index solid immersion lens can improve the spatial resolution by increasing the medium refractive index, but only to few times higher than in air. Photonic crystals can guide light in three dimensions, however, the guided beam width is around a wavelength. Surface plasmons has a potential to reach the sub-wavelength scales; nevertheless, it is confined in the two-dimensional interface between metals and dielectrics. Here, we present a new approach for molding the light flow at the deep sub-wavelength scale, using metamaterials with uniquely designed dispersion. We demonstrate second-band bright vortex-array solitons in photonic lattices. This constitutes the first experimental observation of higher-band solitons in any 2D periodic system. These solitons possess complex intensity and phase structures, yet they can be excited by a simple highly-localized vortex-ring beam. Finally, we show that the linear diffraction of such beams exhibits preferential transport along the lattice axes.

We present a novel, real-time, experimental technique for linear and nonlinear Brillouin zone spectroscopy of photonic lattices. The method relies on excitation with random-phase waves and far-field visualization of the spatial spectrum of the light exiting the lattice. Our technique facilitates mapping the borders of the extended Brillouin zones and the areas of normal and anomalous dispersion within each zone. For photonic lattices with defects (e.g., photonic crystal fibers), our technique enables far-field visualization of the defect mode overlaid on the extended Brillouin zone structure of the lattice. The technique is general and can be used for photonic crystal fibers as well as for periodic structures in areas beyond optics.
